By Dilip Kuner LONG queues at information desks and demonstrating workers were the visible signs of the first day of the Ryanair strike which saw dozens of flights cancelled. However, the terminal departure lounges showed no great signs of problems, with Ryanair managing to maintain calm through its policy of early notice of cancellation, offers of alternative flights and payment of compensation. Around 72 flights are thought to have been cancelled, with the worst affected routes being those between Son Sant Joan Airport and the Spanish peninsula. Dozens of tourists were affected yesterday (Wednesday) with queues forming at information as people claimed compensation to fly with another airline, or rebook on another Ryanair flight. Forty four of the 50 flights scheduled over the two day strike between Mallorca and the peninsula (88 per cent) were cancelled, along with 28 (15.8 per cent) of the 177 flights to European cities.

Fatal plunge A 14-YEAR-OLD British boy who plummeted from a Mallorca hotel balcony has died in hospital. Henry Turley’s mum Claire was holding onto his hand before he fell from the second floor of the Eix Lagotel in Playa del Muro, police said in a statement. He died in island capital Palma’s Son Espases hospital after suffering head injuries and a punctured lung. It is the second tragedy to hit the family from Crumlin, Northern Ireland, in the last few weeks after Claire last month lost her husband Stephen.
