LARGE parts of Almuñecar were plunged into darkness after the town experienced its first power outage this summer last Saturday. The La Herradura area of the town was without electricity for much of the night. Members of the local leftleaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) have since called on local authorities to improve Almuñecar’s electricity grid. The town’s urbanism spokesperson, Jose Manuel Fernandez, said the outage was due to the replacing of a power line running from Calle La Carrera to Calle Guadix. “We hope that further planned line changes and updates to the power system will bring us a solution to future power outages,” he said. Senior members of the local PSOE said further power cuts would have a ‘disastrous’ effect on the tourists’ image of Almuñecar. “We cannot allow another summer of blackouts, which is far from what we understand by tourist excellence,” the local PSOE’s general secretary Rocio Palacios said. “Neighbours, businesspeople and hoteliers have suffered again from the consequences of the inefficient electricity network and from lack of a solution from the local authority,” he added.

OFF ROAD FURY: The car careered along the beach for around 250 metres.

Beach crashers By Joe Gerrard LOCAL POLICE officers were called out to a beach in Rincon de la Victoria after three British tourists were spotted driving on the sand. The two men and one pregnant woman had reportedly come onto the beach, near the Plaza Miguel Cerezo, in their four-by-four from a junction off Calle Limonero last week. Onlookers filmed the car

as it swerved among bathers and beachgoers. Footage showed it appearing to drive chaotically in one direction before turning towards the sea and coming back the opposite way over a distance of around 250 metres. Several witnesses called emergency services and Local Police officers were despatched to stop the Range Rover Evoque. Some beachgoers said it took them more than 40 min-

utes to arrive, with police sources stating they arrived 11 minutes after receiving their first call. Officers issued an on-thespot fine of €500 to the dri-

ver of the vehicle who paid it via bank card at the scene. He claimed they were trying to reach Vueva del Tesoro in the El Cantal area of the town.

Migrants rescued THE National Police has transferred 116 migrants to the Motril sports centre, who had been rescued on Monday by the Spanish Maritime Rescue service. There was a lack of space in the Temporary Foreigner Care Centre and another 53 migrants arrived in a boat the following day. Since last Saturday, more than 200 people have arrived on the Granada coast, having been assisted by the Maritime Rescue service to Motril port. The town’s sports centre has been reopened specifically to shelter the migrants, who had been rescued from three boats in different parts of the Alboran sea. There were also 14 women, several children and a baby among them, and several NGOs are on hand to provide care.
