Brit looks for heirloom by Joe Gerrard A BRITISH man who believes he lost his grandfather’s identity tag from the First World War while returning from Spain has spoken to the media to help find it. Paul Slaughter, a former GB international parachutist, said he thinks he lost the item while going through a security screening at Alicante-Elche airport. He added in an interview with Spanish media that he noticed it was missing after collecting his belongings and that it may have slipped onto the airport floor. “It means a great deal, it is irreplaceable,” he said. “It is especially significant because it is the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War this year. months it will also be the 100th anniversary of my grandfather’s death,” he said. Slaughter said the tag measured roughly 3.8 centimetres by 2.5 centimetres. It bears his grandfather’s name, JWW Slaughter, along with his battalion, the 5th Canadian, his identity number and ‘Lt’ for lieutenant. It originally had engraved on it ‘Sgt’ for Sergeant but this was crossed out when his grandfather was promoted.
