Autism plight Schools ‘treat parents like intruders’ by Gregory Kirby THE Association for Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ALTEA) will take a series of measures to improve the treatment of autistic children in the province’s schools. Parents of autistic students feel ‘desperate and unrecognised’ because schools are failing to cooperate with them and other professionals, ALTEA said. The association is planning to form a special legal department to support families whose problems have been overlooked. Many families said they try to cooperate with schools to help their children develop as best as they can. It is “vital” for autistic pupils placed in standard classes to receive dedicated support because of the more complex social context, ALTEA said. But the association complained the responsible authorities are “not doing anything” to provide the necessary support. Some education delegation employees prioritise avoiding complaints and bad news “instead of our young people’s education,” the organisation said. But ALTEA did recognise some staff are completely dedicated to their roles. Families of autistic children facing problems are demanding Education authorities become more sensitive and professional. The United Kingdom’s National Autistic Society describes the disorder as a “lifelong, developmental disability.” It affects people in different ways, which is why autistic people need the right sort of support “to live a more fulfilling life,” the society said.

Two held in murder probe A MAN and a woman have been remanded in custody by an Almeria City court in connection with the disappearance and suspected murder of Jose Manuel Escudero Ballesta. The arrest comes as Guardia Civil officers said they unearthed what may be the remains of the 45-year-old who was last seen in 2017. Police added they were unable to confirm the body’s identity until forensic tests were undertaken. Jose Manuel Escudero Ballesta, from Orihuela in Alicante Province, had moved to Almeria around five years ago for work. He reportedly had two children, aged 24 and 22, who remained in Alicante Province with his mother. They last spoke to him over the phone in May of that year. Guardia Civil officers found the corpse while conducting searches in the area near where the 45-year-old is believed to have disappeared. The investigation is set to continue with the upcoming post mortem tests on the remains.
