BETWEEN 8,000 and 10,000 archaeological pieces have been seized by the Guardia Civil, who said the haul was the most significant uncovered in Murcia to date. Officers made an inspection of a villa in the Agriducle urbanisation, near the University of Murcia, after discovering evidence for the existence of the previously unknown artefacts. They reportedly belonged to a farming entrepreneur living in the region whose hobby was undertaking private digs in Murcia, Castilla-La Mancha, Andalucia and Alicante from the 1960’s onwards. Miriam Guardiola, the Murcian authorities’ culture spokesperson, said the find was a “historic” one. “It is one of the most important operations of recent decades,” she said.
RECOVERED: Bernabe (right) and Guardiola (centre, right) joined officials and officers for the presentation of the artefacts. Operation Idolillo, as the probe was known, saw police seize more than €1 millionworth of archaeological items, according to estimates from authorities. Luis Enrique de Miquel Santed, the director of the Archaeological Museum of Murcia, said the pieces would give historians a better understand-
ing of the region’s history.

Just beachy! SPAIN has maintained its status as the nation with the most blue flag beaches on the planet. It comes after the Association for Environmental Education and the Consumer (ADEAC) handed the coveted award to 590 sandy strips across the country. The Blue Flag is given to beaches meeting high standards of hygiene, sanitary conditions, safety, and accessibility. And Spain’s total has increased by 11 this year, with the sun-drenched hotspot having topped the world ranking since the awards began in 1987.
