EU got it! RINCON DE LA VICTORIA and five other Malaga towns will receive almost €50 million as part of the European Union’s (EU) Integrated Sustainable Urban Development strategies. The Axarquia town struck gold in its first ever application for the funding, bagging a total of €3,105,020. And the cash - from the EU’s Regional Development Fund will go towards boosting the town’s sustainability. But the sum did fall well short of the €5 million requested to overcome some 34 devel-
opment problems presented in a provincial development plan. The other towns in the province to secure funds were Marbella, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Torremolinos and Cártama. Marbella alone landed €15 million for its Ciudad Sostenible (Sustainable City) project out of a €190 million regional total. The EU scheme - which runs from 2014 to 2020 - will invest €5 billion to help 750 European cities become more sustainable.

by Joe Gerrard GUARDIA CIVIL officers have launched an investigation into the death of a goat on an Axarquia farm. The owner of the animal has reportedly become implicated in the probe after authorities learned a dog of a dangerous breed is suspected of sharing a pen with it.
Officers are now set to determine whether the man is liable to answer for animal abuse charges over the animal’s death. The Guardia Civil began probing the death after the owner told them he found it mutilated on his Rincon de la Victoria farm in December. T h e man s a id th e g oa t,

Plane panic A STUDENT pilot had to make an emergency landing at Velez-Malaga after his plane’s landing gear broke on his first solo flight. Guardia Civil officers, as well as personnel from Local and National Police and firefighters arrived at the runway in case they were needed when the aircraft landed. The flying student had reportedly been in the air before attempting a routine landing. It was during this descent that the plane’s front wheel broke meaning he had to abort the landing.
The plane was in the air for a further two hours while the student pilot attempted to touch down. Flight instructors were in contact with him throughout landing attempts. The aircraft touched down at around 1.25pm yesterday (Wednesday) with the pilot reportedly unharmed. There was no damage to the plane except for the break of the front wheel, the failure of which caused the emergency landing. Flight instructors said the first-time solo flyer’s landing had been “perfect and manual.”
have been responsible for the death. Forensic tests on the corpse of the animal and the dog’s faeces indicated remains of the goat had been in the dog’s system. The ow ne r is be ing probed on suspicion of failing to control the dog thereby leading to the death of the goat.
SPAIN has maintained its status as the nation with the most blue flag beaches on the planet. It comes after the Association for Environmental Education and the Consumer (ADEAC) handed the coveted award to 590 sandy strips across the country.
The Blue Flag is given to beaches meeting high standards of hygiene, sanitary conditions, safety, and accessibility. And Spain’s total has increased by 11 this year, with the sun-drenched hotspot having topped the world ranking since the awards began in 1987.
