Taken by storm Island recovers from wash out by Matt Ford Several incidents were reported to emergency services across Mallorca after the island was struck by wind and rain. Falling trees, floods, landslides and cut off roads were among the 48 notable c a s e s t h e 11 2 e m e rg e n c y services line recorded during a 28-hour period from Saturday to Sunday. The damage was left in the wake of Storm Hugo
which passed through the Balearic Islands over the weekend. Winds with speeds of up to 120 kilometres per hour were recorded in the Serra d’ Alfabia during the d o w n p o u r. A t o t a l o f 2 7 0 litres per square metre of rain was registered in Escorca, according to reports. Firefighters from Palma were called out after the brickwork facade of a building collapsed on the
Calle Delme in the Establiments area at around 12.45am on Sunday. Two people were evacuated from the building as a result. Emergency personnel also responded to floods on the Cami de Son Anglada outside Palma which swept a car into the road, leaving it partly submerged in the torrent. No one was in it at the time. and Mallorcan firefighters also had to rescue eight people trapped in the Coanegra stream, with one reportedly displaying the symptoms of hypothermia.
