POLICE arrested a man accused of 17 burglaries at rural properties across western Almeria Province. The suspect threatened officers with a knife and injured several during his violent capture. The La Mojonera resident, aged 31, is believed to have had an accomplice who is still on the run. The pair are thought to be behind a spate of break-ins from Roquetas de Mar to El Ejido and Vicar that had forced the Guardia Civil to develop a surveillance operation. Police began watching warehouses and greenhouses in the area. Typically the thieves had snuck in at night to steal tools and expensive equipment. One passing patrol heard a loud bang at 5.30am at a San Agustin greenhouse and stopped to investigate. They forced the door and surprised two men who defied orders to stop by dropping the stolen tools and sprinting. A chase ensued through the darkness. One armed suspect was caught and subdued after kicking and punching officers. He is awaiting trial while police hunt his accomplice.

Child killers jailed Two sentenced in La Molineta case By Harrison Jones Two children have been sentenced to long stints in detention centres for causing the deaths of three people in the La Molineta fire in Almeria. The children, aged 16 and 17, were respectively given sentences of eight and three years in a detention centre, followed by five and three years on supervised release. A Juvenile Court ruled that the fire was started by the 16year-old, who used a cigarette lighter to set a sofa alight. Authorities said no accelerants were used in the blaze, and that the child did not intend to kill the victims. Instead, they believe the child was trying to

settle a debt. A 21-year-old man and two girls, aged 15 and 12, died from smoke inhalation in the incident early last April. The other sentenced child, 17, sealed a door in the cave with adhesive tape, in what is

believed to have been a joke stunt. Three other children were given probation measures and semi-open regimes for failing to prevent the crimes and doing little to stop the fire spreading once it had begun.

Savage attack A MAN who burst his victim’s left eyeball during a vicious assault has been jailed for six years. He must also pay out €53,000 compensation to compensate for a total loss of vision in the left eye in addition to a severe head injury. The assault took place in Almeria City. The court heard how the defendant approached his victim, who was extremely drunk, and launched an unprovoked attack on the man. Four hours later the victim reported to hospital, where he spent eight days recovering from multiple fractures. Despite being intoxicated he was able to fully describe the attack consistent with his injuries and identify his assailant.
