Police uncover weapons factory By Harrison Jones FOUR people have been arrested after engineering blanks into live ammunition to sell on the black market. According to reports, authorities seized 45 air rifles, 133 cartridges of live ammunition, 275 cartridges of detonating ammunition and various tools to modify weapons, in the operations in Torrevieja and Guardamar. The Guardia Civil and Murcia police investigations began when a single person bought 45 weapons online. Concerns grew when the individual was connected to a number of extremist and violent groups. The investigation also revealed that the suspects allegedly used weapons routinely to carry out threats. The arrests were made in mid Novemb e r, a m i d f e a r s a b o u t the high number of weapons being acquired and the possibility of them being sold on to criminal groups.

HEARTBREAKING: A quiet space of reflection ruined.

EXCLUSIVE By Darren James Residents of Urbanisation La Marina were lost for words on Sunday as they learned the unopened Garden of Reflection had been the target of vandals. The white painted brick wall that was about to have a number of plaques fixed on it in honour of residents of the Urbanisation had been daubed with black paint and a number of other fixtures that are part of the memorial garden were damaged. The wanton vandalism was discovered by one of many vol-

unteers that have spent much of this calendar year working on a project that was the brainchild of local resident Debbie Alger. “I’m heartbroken,” said a tearful Debbie. “It may only be a blank wall at this stage, but to me and many others it means so much. It’s the culmination of seven months of hard work, fundraising, meetings and organising and we were looking forward to the Garden of Reflection opening before Christmas.” Those plans are now in some doubt, with some people expressing their concern as to what might now happen to the finished wall once the memorial

plaques are put on it. “I’ve tried to justify why someone would do this,” continued Debbie. “But it’s simply vandalism. I’m fuming!” Pictures of the vandals’ work have been placed on Facebook and it’s hoped that someone will come forward knowing who carried out this cowardly act. Many commenting on the posts have described the perpetrators as ‘scum of the Earth.’ Debbie came up with the idea of the Garden of Reflection in the aftermath of a vigil on the Urbanisation following the Manchester bombing in the summer.

Four rescued from burning building GUARDIA CIVIL members have saved four people from a burning building in central Torrevieja, according to Spanish media. One man and an elderly, disabled woman, were taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation, following the fire on Monday night. Two other female victims did not require treatment. The four police officers

entered the building three times to help residents caught in the blaze. They quickly located the first pair, who were visibly effected by smoke inhalation. After they were brought to safety, the group rescued a woman from the third floor and one from the fourth. The causes of the blaze are currently unknown, but

are being investigated by the Guardia Civil. The four officers are said to be in good health.
