A WOMAN who set fire to the man who raped her daughter has returned home. Maria del Carmen Garcia, 65, has served three-and-a-half years of her five-and-a-half year sentence. She is now free for most of the day but must return to prison to sleep at night, having been jailed for killing Antonio Cosme, who in 1998 sexually abused her then 13-year-old daughter Veronica. While on a release day in 2005, he approached Maria at a Benejuzar bus stop, provoking what she described in court as a “mental explosion,” leading her to go to a nearby petrol station and fill a plastic bottle with fuel. She then confronted Cosme at a nearby bar, dousing him with the liquid before setting him alight with a match. He died from his injuries 10 days later.
€12 million water boost FARMERS in Alicante and Murcia are to see a €12 million bill waived. It comes as national agriculture minister, Isabel Garcia Tejerina, announced a move to suspend maintenance on the pipeline which transports water from the Tajo River to the two regions. No water has arrived via the so-called Tajo-Segura system since May after water levels in the Entrepeñas and Buendia reservoirs near Madrid descended to dangerously low levels.
