Mayor on the ropes COUNCILLORS in Nerja are edging closer to booting out current mayor Rosa Arrabal from office. Arrabal, a member of the Spanish Socialist Workers Party, was elected to power in 2015 with the support of councillors from the EVA-Podemos and Izquierda Unida parties, putting an end to the Popular Party’s (PP) 20year reign in the town. However, it looks like her time in office may be cut short as the PP have collaborated with the Ciudadanos party to make an agreement that will remove Arrabal from office. While a deal has yet to be signed, it has been reported that the vote of no confidence has only been delayed because the current mayor is out of the country. Arrabal was allegedly made aware of the recent developments while attending the World Travel Market in London.

NERJA CAR BOOT SALE: Charities must pay.

Blooming dispute Poppy seller sent packing EXCLUSIVE By Sally Underwood A British Poppy Appeal seller has been turned away from Nerja’s Sunday car boot sale. Dorothy Allen, who has been collecting for the Royal British Legion in Nerja for seven years, said she had been standing by the gate with a poppy tray for an hour before being confronted by the sale’s organiser. She claimed Bart Edel, president of the Lions Club Nerja, told her she must pay to stand by the gate but Dorothy says she had been allowed to collect in the same place the previous week and had been promised she would not have to pay as

long as she did not use a table at the car boot sale. She explained several strangers were forced to defend her, even offering to pay the sum but she refused on the principle she was collecting money for charity. Dorothy said she instead stood outside the event’s gate but claims Mr Edel continued to approach her and even threatened her with the police before she eventually left. She commented, “I said to him ‘you’re supposed to be a charity but you are not a very charitable person, this collection only takes place once a year.’” The Essexborn grandmother explained the previous Lions Club president used to allow her to collect for the charity and even used to buy a poppy herself.

AN unnamed man has been held in custody after using his mobile phone to snap provocative photographs in a Rincon de la Victoria shop. The establishment’s owner spotted him taking pictures up the skirt of a female customer as she leaned over to inspect some products. The proprietor told the victim what had happened, leading her to call the police and report the incident.

She added all other supermarkets in Nerja allow her to collect and the town hall always issues her with licences for public spaces. Dorothy says the episode left “a bitter taste in my mouth,” but said she has been undeterred from continuing to collect for the Poppy Appeal. For his part, Mr Edel countered, “all the charities pay (the fee). We are a charity too and we do not want to make a distinction between any of the charitable organisations. I was trying to explain but for some reason there was a misunderstanding. I hope we can resolve this problem next time.” This Sunday, the Royal British Legion Nerja is holding a Remembrance event from 11.40am at the Hotel Andalus, Nerja. It is open to the public.

Pests plague school THE parents of students who attend the Augusto Santiago Bellido School in Velez-Malaga have complained that their children are being ‘eaten’ by fleas, as new cases occur almost daily. According to the Irene Peña, the president of the school’s Parents’ Association (AMPA), students from at least 15 classes in the school, which has around 500 pupils in total, have been bitten by fleas in the past few days alone. AMPA has threatened to stop children from going to class and hold a rally outside the city hall unless the local authorities put measures in place to stop the problem. Parents have blamed the plot of land next to the school for the problem, as many pet owners in the neighbourhood take their dogs there to do their business.
