A NERJA snack bar is unlikely to reopen after burning to the ground. Flames razed the building on Calahonda beach, which closed down several years ago and had been occupied by homeless people. No-one was injured in the blaze, which was quickly extinguished by firefighters.

and a lorry reportedly used for smuggling. The gang were responsible for growing, drying, packing and selling the drugs to European countries, primarily the Netherlands. WIDESPREAD traffic chaos is forecast over the weekend with 6.3 million drivers expected to hit Spanish roads. The alert came ahead of yesterday’s national holiday, with many Spaniards opting to take an extra day off today (Friday) and enjoy a weekend getaway. The number of police and technicians operating on the national road network will be boosted to more than 14,000 until midnight on Sunday, traffic authorities confirmed. Drug, alcohol, and speed checks will also be ramped up with eight radar-equipped Pegasus helicopters deployed. Heavy traffic and tailbacks are expected as tens of thousands head for the coast or countryside. On Saturday much of the gridlock is set to be concentrated around beaches, theme parks and other leisure attractions, while major delays are also predicted for Sunday as the returning hordes spark further congestion.

BURNED OUT: The bar.

Among those arrested, 45 are Spanish while the remaining six are a mixture of French, Dutch and Polish. Ten have been imprisoned without bail as investigators continue to probe the case. An official from the Granada Tax Agency revealed that the gang’s leaders also laundered hundreds of thousands of Euros through

the purchase of expensive cars which were bought in Malaga using false documentation. The vehicles were then sold on for a price higher than declared after tax paperwork was also forged. Some of those arrested have previous records for drug trafficking, with one jailed as recently as 2006.

Sewage works resume WORK on Nerja’s much-promised sewage plant has resumed after six months. Local politicians had for months demanded the Spanish government’s help in completing the notorious project, which has been 95 per cent complete since April but ongoing for over a decade. Miguel Angel Heredia, the party’s deputy leader in Malaga, claimed the lack of a solution over the halted project was an “insult,” and the government had not shown “the slightest interest” in getting involved. Nerja is the only large resort in Axarquia to still pour untreated sewage into the sea via underwater pipes on Burriana and Torrecilla beaches. In March one of the pipes burst, causing raw waste to bubble up 400 metres offshore.
