Road hog taken down AN adult wild boar which has been terrorising residents of Cala de Moral was captured but several others are still on the loose. The animal was shot with an anaesthetic dart by an expert from Don Animal, the firm contracted to control street fauna in Rincon de la Victoria. It is one of a group which have left homeowners in the Serramar, Cueva del Tesoro and on Calle Tamadaba scared to go out at night for over a year as they descend from nearby hills to forage on the streets. During that time, two dogs have been killed and a third injured, while a small child was knocked over by a female boar protecting her young.

Noses at the ready LOCAL POLICE are preparing to demonstrate at Velez-Malaga’s next council session. The group has already protested five times since a dispute over pay and conditions began in November 2016, with police wearing Pinocchio noses to council meetings. The protests over approving €500,00 worth of pay rises, as well as staff increases, have become a source of contention. At the last council meeting, the town’s mayor, Antonio Moreno Ferrer, expelled 50 officers from the building for “displaying posters that undermine the image of this corporation and this city.”

Waste squabble hits court

FOUR young men must appear before a judge after being caught stealing mangoes in Canillas de Aceituno. The quartet were stopped after a Guardia Civil patrol noticed two of them sitting in a car among tropical fruit farms on the MA-3113 road near Benamargosa. The officers decided to sweep the nearby fields and found the other two men crouching alongside “several piles of mangoes waiting to be placed in sacks,” read a police statement. Eight sacks of the pricey fruit were later found in the boot of the thieves’ vehicle. It comes as VelezMalaga Council announced a campaign to protect local growers during this year’s harvest, with 12 Local Police officers to assist a 40-strong unit assembled by the Guardia Civil and National Police to keep watch over their land.

By Sally Underwood A Torrox court will consider whether it is legal that raw waste is pumped onto Burriana Beach. Nerja businessman, Jorge Narvaez, wrote to the Malaga Provincial Prosecutor complaining the issue constitutes a criminal offence. The prosecutor’s office in turn handed the issue over to Torrox’s courts, which also serve Nerja. Mr Narvaez, an ex-PSOE councillor, explained, “this problem has been going on for 20 years, since I built a restaurant and the apartments above. “I had to invest 20 million pesetas to divert the pipe, with the permission of the Hydrographic Confederation, and since then there have been sewage leaks which in summer attract many insects and cause bad smells. Clients get up from the tables and leave.” The businessman claimed he had complained to the Partido Popular-led council on “numerous occasions,” which promised to solve the issue, “but that was never done.” He continued, “when the PSOE entered the council they said the same thing to me, but when I asked the Junta, they were only going to cover part of the stream and add some receptacles.” Nerja Council explained the

CLEAN ENOUGH? Burriana beach. issue “has been dragging on for two decades, and begins under the Armijo-run council, which did not resolve the issue in 20 years. There is a nearby street which does not have sanitation and it would cost €600,000 to install. We have twice filed a motion to get credit to pay for the works but we have been stopped by the Partido Popular and Ciudadanos.” Nerja is the only large resort

in Malaga to still pour untreated sewage into the sea, using underwater pipes on both Burriana and Torrecilla beaches. The underwater plant is now around 30 years old and said to be in bad condition. Works to the town’s first sewage treatment plant stalled earlier this summer at 95 per cent completion after the construction company responsible, Isolux-Cosan-Corviam, de-

clared bankruptcy. Politicians from parties PSOE and Ciudadanos demanded answers from Spain’s Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, after works to the main plant were left unfinished and the main pumping station not yet started. As a result, the plant is unable to open, allowing untreated sewage to continue pouring into the sea, posing a risk to the marine environment.
