Killer almond disease spreads
New outbreak! Ayuntamiento dse Alicante
ISSUE NO. 1679
BAD TIDINGS: Elena Cebrian (centre) delivers the news. By Matt Ford Fears are growing after new cases of the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa were detected in El Comtat and Marina Alta. The European Commission said in a statement that Spain is “losing the battle” against the bug that is “officially out of control” after the number of cases in Mallorca rose to 156. The disease which has been dubbed olive Ebola was previ-
ously confined to Guadalest, where emergency action has been taken, but it has now spread to 26 almond orchards in Balls and Alcanali. It has had a devastating effect on almond trees and has wiped out more than a million olive trees in Italy and the Balearic Islands in recent years, but these new cases represent only the second record on mainland Spain. Insecticide will now be applied to everything within 100
metres of the newly-infected trees in the hope of destroying vectors carrying the disease, before the trees themselves are destroyed. Regional Environmental councillor Elena Cebrian met with the mayors of the affected villages in order to try and calm local growers, but she also confirmed that biologists have not as yet identified which insect species is carrying the deadly disease to new areas.
