Anti-terror flower pots roasted
Stumbling block Firefighters have launched a scathing criticism of the new anti-terrorism concrete barriers and flower pots set up in Palma in the wake of the Barcelona terror attack. The force claims the blocks, designed to prevent terrorist lorry massacres, make it impossible to respond quickly to an emergency. “In trying to solve one problem, the city has created another one,” read a statement from Palma fire brigade. Only smaller vehicles can fit around the concrete buffers and giant flower pots, meaning firefighters will be forced to remove them before accessing fires. The town hall has admitted that the bumpers will impede fire engines and ambulances. But it was described as a ‘minor evil’ worth paying the price. A press release suggested the barriers were ordered by Spain’s Interior Ministry. It remains unclear whether they are temporary or

will become permanent fixtures at Placa d’Espanya and on the Sant Miquel shopping street. Meanwhile political party Mes per Mallorca has attacked the King of Spain for entertaining Saudi princes. The island-focused group, which is part of the ruling Balearic coalition, also denounced the welcoming of superyachts owned by Arab despots. Spokesman David Abril accused Saudi Arabia and Qatar of sponsoring terrorism and Islamic extremism. It is intolerable to continue with lucrative arms deals and diplomatic fawning in the aftermath of the Barcelona terrorist attack, he argued. “We welcome yachts from the emir of Qatar, or prince of Saudi Arabia with open arms because they bring money,” he said. “Even though that money is stained with blood.”
Killer driver freed A LORRY driver accused of causing a fatal accident on the MA-13 road to Alcudia has been released on charges. According to witness reports the 54-year-old Chilean ploughed headlong into three cars after driving
on the wrong side of the road, leaving three people dead and six injured. After expressing his regret for the victims he tested negative for drugs and alcohol, and his mobile phone will be checked to see if it was in use at the
time of the incident last Monday. A 10-year-old German girl who lost her father in the smash remains in Son Espases hospital alongside her mother, while a Spanish woman and Colombian man were also killed.
