Moto champ races by WORLD champion motorcyclist Marc Marquez visited Mojacar with his brother Alex, also a champion racer. The Spaniard, who at just 24 already has three MotoGP championships under his belt, stopped by the town hall to sign Mojacar’s book of honour. The ‘Ant of Cervera’ met Mayor Rosmari Cano, who presented him with an Indalo, Almeria’s ancient talisman, as a token of good luck for the future. She also handed him the book Legends of Mojacar, quipping “legends for another legend,” to which Marquez modestly replied, “not yet.” His younger brother Alex, an upcoming Moto3 champion, couldn’t visit the town hall as he is recovering from injury but passed on his best wishes to the people of Mojacar. The siblings, the first in history to win world championship motorcycle titles, are regular visitors to Mojacar, enjoying its tranquil settings while they recuperate from the gruelling championship tours.

Cannabis ‘factory’ shut down

Up in smoke By Matthew Elliott A huge indoor marihuana plantation with more than 3,000 plants was raided in Nijar. It is the largest indoor drug greenhouse found by Almeria’s Guardia Civil in years. The thousands of plants were cultivated inside an abandoned industrial unit within the Los Grillos industrial park on the outskirts of Nijar. Inside a 400 square metre perimeter was a factory devoted to drug cultivation, with a large watchdog chained to the fence outside. Police were alerted to the plantation by locals who grew suspicious of the behaviour of two individuals who regularly entered the seemingly abandoned building.

A patrol team was dispatched to investigate but found no evidence of any human activity after a quick inspection. Later, however, they witnessed two men sneaking inside and decided to stake out the premises. Having observed a number of people coming and going, police secured a search warrant. As they approached for a full inspection, a man spotted them and ran inside to lock the door. Peering in through the window, officers saw that he was carrying a shotgun. They barged in and the man threw his gun to the ground and surrendered. Inside officers found a sophisticated growing operation with ventilation, halogen lamps, climate control, smell inhibitors and drip irrigation.

BUSTED: Police uncover biggest drug plantation in years.

They arrested the 30-yearold suspect, a Nijar resident, and have charged him with drug trafficking offences and animal cruelty for neglecting the large dog chained outside. The dog has since been given shelter with an animal charity.

Dogs left to die A PACK of abandoned dogs were rescued from a roof by Guardia Civil officers in Almeria responding to calls from concerned residents. They worked closely with Local Police colleagues to secure the ramshackle and dangerous building where the dogs were being held on the roof, exposed to the elements. Some of the dogs were tied to poles, all of them were lacking food, water and basic supplies. There was no shelter and they were surrounded by dirt and faeces. It is unclear how long they had been left there for and unlikely they would have survived much longer. Among them were four potentially dangerous dogs and one puppy just a few weeks old with gashes on its ears.
