Murder charge dropped

Manslaughter Protestors outraged.

Sunday shopping outcry GUILTY: The trial took place at the provincial court. By Darren James CHARLIE BEVILL-WARCUP, the 78-year-old British expatriate accused of beating his partner to death in San Miguel de Salinas, has been found guilty of manslaughter. The decision comes after the jury voted seven to two in favour of his conviction at the conclusion of his trial in Elche. Mr Bevill-Warcup is expected to be sentenced in the coming days but is expected to serve less than the 19 years requested by the prosecution since a charge that he did not allow the victim to defend herself has been dropped. The jury rejected claims that his behaviour was influenced by alcohol or a mental disorder, concluding that it was a case of gender violence but that the attack was not premeditated. The incident occurred almost

three years ago when Mrs Broadwell was reported as missing, resulting in public appeals over the subsequent days. Mr Bevill-Warcup was arrested six months later when his partner’s body was discovered on rubbish-strewn waste ground in Algorfa. Suspicions were raised after neighbours told them they had heard a row the night before she was reported missing. During questioning in the days after Rosemary’s absence was reported, the accused told investigators he had dropped her off outside her bank in Ciudad Quesada so she could withdraw money, but staff at the bank told police she had never entered the branch. As reported in the Euro Weekly News issue 1670, he claimed that she had died in an accident at the start of the trial, after originally telling detectives that he killed her in a drunken rage.

OVER 150 people marched between Gran Via and Plaza Mar in Alicante to protest against the three shopping centres opening on Sundays and public holidays. Residents of Alicante expressed their outrage after City Hall broke from the longstanding tradition. The protest was organised by the CCOO trade union. Organisers of the event have criticised that opening trade on Sundays and bank holidays “does not generate quality jobs and it is impossible to reconcile work, family and personal life within deregulated working hour templates.” The union led by Yaissel Sanchez will focus on door-stepping the shopping centres on July 20, 24 and 27.
