SEAT battle Expat strongholds compete By Matthew Elliott Two of Almeria’s most popular expat strongholds are set to go head-to-head in a battle for immortality. Spanish car maker SEAT is looking for a new Spanish village to name its 2018 model after and will hold a popular vote to choose the winner. Mojacar and Vera have launched competing campaigns, each eager to secure a place in motoring history, and the lucrative name recognition that comes with it. The councils, local residents and the voting public have three months to make their pitch and make up their minds. Entry is open to all small Spanish towns with a deadline of June 22. But with Almeria never having been represented in half a century of SEAT history, Mojacar and Vera are leading challengers, already with substantial popular support.

NEW MODEL: Name to be determined later this year. Previous SEAT models include the SEAT Marbella and SEAT Ibiza. Whether the hotly anticipated sevenseat SUV is named the SEAT Mojacar, SEAT Vera, or none of the above, will be determined later this year. A popular online vote will determine three finalists to be announced at the Frank-

furt Motor Show on September 12. Another vote will follow with the ultimate winner being revealed in November. While Mojacar has long been touted as a potential SEAT model, Vera is a late entry to the competition. Mayor Felix Lopez saw the economic opportunity for extra tourism and convinced the council to compete. Which, if any, Almerian town comes out on top is down to the people. With social media playing a huge role both Spanish and UK residents will undoubtedly be taking part.

Shotgun self defence A FEMALE soldier who shot a man wielding a knife faces prison for using excessive force. The Nijar woman is accused of deliberately shooting him in the chest, rather than the arm, or firing a warning shot. At the time she was being followed and harassed by her ex-partner and called a friend to report hearing strange noises in the garden. She went outside to check with a flashlight and her shotgun, which she was licensed to carry. Her ex then appeared from the darkness with a large knife and began marching towards her. She warned him to stay back and, when he continued walking, fired directly at him from a distance of three metres. The stalker was almost killed, spending three weeks in intensive care, requiring plastic surgery and enduring permanent injuries. Now prosecutors are charging the soldier with attempted murder.
