Dramatic paws Fate of more than 500 pets in doubt By Matthew Elliott Hundreds of pets are feared to have been secretly killed at Alm e r i a ’s m u n i c ip al Zoosanitary Centre. Disturbing data from the public facility appears to show a total of 523 pets that are no longer on the centre’s books, but unaccounted for anywhere else. Socialist councillor Ines P laza, wh o e x p o se d th e alarmi n g d i sc r e p an cy, claims t h e e v i d e n c e s u g gests that 523 animals were killed without any official control, possibly to reduce overcrowded conditions. Plaza a n d o t h e r c o u n cilors spent one year lobbying the Popular Party-led government to release the input and output figures of the centre. She claims that the cou n c i l e x e c u t i v e re peatedly tried to fob her off and imposed all sorts of bureaucratic obstacles in her path to obtaining the information. Fina l l y a b l e t o a n a ly s e the data, researchers noticed that from 2013-2016 a total of 523 animals disappeared from th e o ff i c i a l r e co rd . They were not included in natural deaths, euthanasia, adoptio n s, e sc a p e s o r thefts.

Fake bomb threat
ALARMING DISCREPANCY: Animals may have been killed without any official control. M s P laz a a lle g es tha t there are only two explanations for the anomaly. Either the centre has muddled it figures for three consecutive years or a secret killing campaign has taken place for reasons unknown. The Zoosanitary Centre takes in thousands of animals each year which have
been abandoned, handed in by owners, and found on the roadside. It has the capacity to hold roughly 100 animals in humane conditions but, at any given time, will have five or six times that figure. The PSOE, spearheaded by Ms Plaza, has suggested that the unexplained disappe a ra nc e s ma y be a n a t-
te mpt to re duc e a n ove rflowing population. Visitors have found four or five pets to a cage designed for just one animal. R e ga rdle s s of w ha t ha s ha ppe ne d to the mis s ing 523, critics allege that the cramped conditions cause infe c tions a nd ne e dle s s deaths.
A MANHUNT lasting months finished with the arrest of a man who falsely claimed to have planted an explosive device outside an Almeria apartment complex. The suspect told police the bomb was so powerful it could destroy 200 homes, sparking a major security incident. Elite explosive specialists were called in to defuse the device, which turned out to
be a hoax. Police tracked the anonymous number to a phone used by a Romanian individual. With the international collaboration of police databases in Romania they eventually identified their man, sending armed officers to arrest the 31-year-old on April 21. He is charged with making false threats and serious offences against public order.
