Students escape London attack Alicante school group metres from bridge
By Matthew Elliott Costa Blanca schoolchildren caught up in the horrific London terrorist attack have returned safely to Alicante. The 44 students and four teachers from Maria Auxiliadora de Alicante were reunited with their relieved families at Alicante-Elche airport on March 24. The dream trip turned into a nightmare when they witnessed
the Westminster Bridge massacre from just 50 metres away. Taking photos of Big Ben and the British parliament, the group passed the attack site three minutes before killer Khalid Masood mowed down pedestrians on the bridge. With mayhem on the streets and helicopters in the air, the students fled to a McDonalds for shelter. The group of teenagers, aged 15-16, heard what sounded like shots as the scene erupted with
screams and sirens. Some victims had dived into the River Thames to avoid being run over by the terrorist killer. The students were still oblivious to what had happened when Masood was shot dead by police. When they arrived back in Alicante they were greeted by dozens of parents, many crying tears of relief. Applause rang out across the airport with even the school priest there for the moment.
