Residents revolt
Camposol group demands publicity boycott By Matthew Elliott A COSTA BLANCA residents’ association is taking the dramatic step of asking the British Ministry of Tourism to stop advertising Murcia as a ‘sun and sea’ destination. The Camposol association in Mazarron is hoping to force the regional government into solving the neighbourhood’s many problems by threatening Murcia’s crucial tourist revenue. For years homeowners on the Camposol urbanisation have been locked in bitter legal battles over the validity of property rights plus numerous
structural defects. There are more than 4,500 residents, with roughly four in five being British expatriates. The association says that many members are fed up with being in a constant state of legal limbo, unsure whether their homes will be legalised under Mazarron’s complex property laws. The original developer is now bankrupt and, like many others across Spain during the height of the property boom, left its work unfinished. With many homes built precariously along the Los Aznares ravine, a harsh winter has left hundreds of people dealing
with serious damage and unsafe properties since 2014. The association has taken photos of the conditions and included them in their appeal to the British government. Under normal circumstances the ploy would be largely symbolic, and the British government would be unlikely to step in and defend residents’ rights on such a local level. Murcia, has however, endured a substantial amount of unwanted criticism during that time. The health of the regional economy depends to a remarkable degree on the annual influx of millions of tourists.
