Alicante flooded but benefits for local crops By Matt Ford THE Costa Blanca is facing another major clean-up operation after a 22-hour rainstorm left much of Alicante City underwater. Around 149 litres of water per square metre fell between Sunday evening and Monday, the most since 1997, when a deadly downpour of 271 litres per square metre killed five people and injured 235. Since December 2016, Alicante has been soaked by 340 litres of rainfall per square metre, 20 litres more than the yearly average and the most since the winter of 1988-1989. Although the latest bout of extreme weather caused significant material damage in places, city mayor Gabriel Echavarri announced his satisfaction with the flood defence infrastructure

installed after the 1997 tragedy. Emergency services were called out more than 300 times, rescuing citizens from stricken vehicles on San Juan beach and the neighbourhoods of Albufereta, Santa Faz and Verdegas, but no-one was seriously harmed. Much of the drama took place on Avenide de Denia, Alicante’s main thoroughfare, which became a raging torrent for several hours, trapping many vehicles, although there was widespread flooding across the city. A number of schools were closed on Monday and Tuesday, while underground garages and lower-lying neighbourhoods were swamped by over a metre of water. Elsewhere, heads of two of the area’s most important agricultural unions expressed their
delight at the wet winter following several years of drought-like conditions. Eladio Aniorte, from the ASAJA union, referred to the rainfall as “a blessing” as he explained how growers will not need to irrigate for at least a month. The main beneficiary crops are citrus fruits plus vegetables such as artichokes, broccoli, beans and potatoes. “The need for water is so great that anything falling from the sky is welcome,” said Aniorte. “It is a real wonder.”
