Suffocated Family crushed under piles of clothing
Three members of the same family who were crushed under more than a tonne of clothing in their own home, died from suffocation, tests show. They had stored hundreds of boxes and bags containing clothes and footwear at their Alicante home. These were apparently destined for flea markets in Morocco and Algeria where the family are believed to have sold them as a business. But in one bedroom, where the mother, father and their 12year-old daughter were asleep,
the boxes had become dangerously unstable. What caused the pillars of clothing to collapse is not known but police and fire crews estimate anywhere between a tonne and two tonnes came down on the trio. The tragic scene was discovered by the couple’s 18-yearold daughter who survived because she was asleep in another room. She woke to find her sister, her father, 50 and mother, 49, had been crushed at their home
in Avenida de Alcoy. Every room was said to be piled high with clothing but it was stored hygienically and neighbours had not complained about the business being run from the small flat.
