Emergency Government pledges funds for repairs
Guardamar. By Simon Firth Repairs to coastal areas badly damaged by the recent storms will be carried out and completed before the tourist season begins, the government has pledged. With millions of euros riding on the massive influx of tourists, the government has now declared a state of ‘civil protection emergency.’ This sanctions the release of funds to repair infrastructure severely damaged by the high winds and rain which lashed the southern Costa Blanca. At first the arrival of a cold front from Russia’s iciest wastes left large areas of the region under a blanket of snow. Record books showed Torrevieja last experienced snow more than 100 years ago. As temperatures plunged local councils were left unprepared. Many inland towns and villages were cut off with many major and minor roads blocked. But as the snow disappeared - thankfully without any fatalities - the southern Costa Blanca was left to face a second weather onslaught. This time high winds and rain lashed the region leaving a
trail of devastation in their wake, especially along the coast. Roads were ripped up and waves up to six metres high in places crashed onto the region’s beaches. Entire sections were washed
away leaving many coastal properties badly damaged and some facing demolition. The rains also brought landslides in many areas blocking roads and causing widespread disruption. Turn to page 5
