Champion of expat rights receives MBE By Eleanor Hawkins Simon Manley, British Ambassador to Spain, travelled to Albox with Vice Consul Rosslyn Crotty on Thursday (October 20) to present local councillor and AUAN President Maura Hillen with her MBE. Mrs Hillen was presented with the honour during a ceremony at Hospederia Virgen del Saliente in Albox before an audience which included local politicians, friends and relatives. Mrs Hillen received the honour for the work she has done, and continues to do, promoting the interests of residents of the area, among them many British. A number of people in the area were caught up in a legal minefield when in good faith they purchased properties that had been illegally built. The untiring work of AUAN, the Abusos Urbanisti-

Raging tide cos Almanzora No (No to Urban Planning Abuse in Almanzora) association in collaboration with other similar associations in Spain including SOHA (Save Our Houses Axarquia) in eastern Malaga recently led to changes to the Spanish property law to avoid demolitions with no compensation.

During his speech Mr Manley praised the work of the associations in defence of the rights of expatriate homeowners who purchased their properties without being aware they should not have been built. Mrs Hillen thanked the members of AUAN and other associations, her Spanish friends and colleagues, her partner in battle, lawyer Gerardo Vazquez, and finally her

husband John for their support after receiving her MBE, which in full stands for Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.
