Water treatment By Matthew Elliott The blast point of the huge explosion that ripped through Velez-Malaga injuring some 90 people, was a kitchen that had been operating without a licence since 2013. On Saturday October 1, at the height of a five-day feria, the Axarquia town hit the headlines when an acci-
dental ignition of gas cylinders destroyed the takeaway section of the La Bohemia cafe. More than 50 people were taken to the Regional Hospital of Axarquia with injuries, some of them severe. Three were moved to larger hospitals for specialised care, while three others are still in ICU but their injuries are not said to be life-threa-
tening. The blast occurred shortly after 6.30pm as crowds flocked in the Pasaje Montera. Velez-Malaga mayor, Antonio Moreno Ferrer, paid tribute to the establishment’s cook who is credited with raising the alarm and alerting customers moments before the explosion after he smelled a strong odour of gas.
