Shark scare on the Costa By Matt Ford Beachgoers in Fuengirola got an almighty scare when lifeguards blew their whistles, screaming and waving frantically at bathers to get out the sea after a shark was apparently spotted a few metres offshore. Although this could not be confirmed by official sources, almost three kilometres of coastline were immediately shut down, with red flags hoisted for around five hours. The alert was broadcast just after midday on Sunday, August 28 when three separate calls were received by the 112 emergency service. One claimed to have seen the dorsal fin of a shark measuring “three or four metres” in length. Witnesses recounted scenes reminiscent of the movie Jaws as hundreds of terrified swimmers stampeded out the water. mained wary with most avoiding a dip until the next day. “We were told we could swim but many people were on edge,” said Roberto who’s on holiday from Madrid.
Juan Jesus Martin, a biologist from the Aula del Mar museum in Malaga City said: “There’s no sharks in the Med because they move in open sea, it may have been a dolphin or sunfish.
