Scooter shenanigans By John Smith and Simon Firth One of the largest group rescues ever undertaken by the emergency services took place in the Tejeda natural park when 45 hikers, among them a number of small children, failed to return to their base. The alarm was raised when the walkers, who had planned to trek along the upper reaches of the Rio Hi-

gueron, became disorientated and wandered off the trail. They had apparently crossed the river at some stage on Saturday 27 August but then deviated from the established route. When they tried to return they found themselves in a ditch and in the dark they were unable to get back onto the proper pathways. A call came into the Andalucia emergency 112 line

shortly before 11pm saying the group had not returned. Officers from the local police of Frigiliana, along with search and rescue experts from the Guardia Civil and firefighters from Nerja and the Nerja Civil Protection Service were mobilised. The route to the stranded group is thought to have taken nearly two hours. When they found the hikers they were checked for any injuries before the ope-

ration began to lead them to safety. The successful rescue ended with the authorities revealing nobody needed treatment in hospital.
