Crisis on the roads
By Gemma Elvins-Quinn Serious accidents occur practically every other day on the N332, but Sunday (July 24) was the worst day of the summer so far. Three vehicles were involved in a crash, resulting in a pregnant woman being taken to hospital and a newborn receiving medical assistance on the roadside. As a result of this incident on the N-332 at Torrevieja, a traffic jam occurred which led to a further accident involving several vehicles and children. These accidents frequently have the same cause: the sheer
volume of vehicles on a one lane road which sees thousands of vehicles pass through it during the summer. Guardia Civil traffic officers monitoring and running the N332 Facebook page, advising motorists of traffic regulations and road rules in English, highlighted the importance of driving slowly and safely in the summer, particularly on the N332. “As police officers, we feel powerless to see how every day there are accidents which could have been avoided if, a few years ago, the N-332 had been widened as it was in Orihuela
Costa, with two lanes on both sides of the road.” New signs have been installed along the road, warning drivers of traffic conditions, the last one a few weeks ago at a cost of €1,000. Politicians, including the PSOE party and the mayor of Torrevieja, have protested against the current situation of the road but traffic jams and accidents are still happening every day. Raising awareness of the situation to the public, the Guardia Civil said: “We can only offer our help once the accident happens, but we need to
spread the message and ask the politicians “please, let’s save lives and carry on the work improvements of the N-332 which were passed years ago.” It is good to launch campaigns to prevent accidents, but it is better to improve roads to avoid them.
