Raising for Ghana MOJACAR has once again been supporting fundraising efforts for a charity which works with needy children in Ghana. A concert was held on Tuesday and there will be further activities next week.

Town hall in turmoil Big spending

Albox Town Hall has once again been thrown into turmoil by an Andalucian High Court of Justice (TSJA) sentence which declares the March 7 plenary session which invested Sonia Cerdan (pictured) as mayor as null and void.

The case was put to the court by PP opposition leader Juan Pedro Perez Quiles, who has always stated that Cerdan’s appointment was not valid as she had left PSOE, the party she ran with at the last local elections.

Perez and his party have been a bone of contention for Albox socialists for some time. In fact, the whole chapter of the book of local politics began when former mayor Rogelio Mena was reported by the PP opposition for refusing to facilitate access to information and council documents.

Although Mena had been a PSOE candidate and won the local elections with ease, the controversial case caused the political party to ask him to step down and hand the office over to his second in command. However, he responded by leaving PSOE, taking eight councillors with him, and set-

When he was eventually sentenced and banned from office, Cerdan stepped into her mentor’s shoes and was pronounced mayor.

Yet the court has agreed with Perez that her appointment was not valid as she was no longer a member of the party she ran with during the last elections.

As the PP lodged a request for an urgent extraordinary plenary session to be called within 10 days to choose a new mayor on Tuesday (July 19), Cerdan hit back saying her legal department was analysing the sentence and intended to appeal.

“This is a coup, Perez is going against what the voters want and proving that he couldn’t care less about Albox

and is just a spoiled brat who wants the job. I would be ashamed in his position, knowing the group I am up against has a majority and the public placed him in the opposition,” Cerdan scathingly commented.

Perez meanwhile responded stating that he was not looking for power but felt that it was time things were done right for a change.

A STREET in Albox has been renamed to honour a popular local man who recently passed away. The change was requested by local residents to mark his tireless work for the community.

with the local council and a number of other matters which may be easy to deal with in the UK, but could be handled quite differently in Spain.

Did you know for example that if you have a joint bank account in Spain and your partner dies, the account will be frozen as soon as you tell the bank? In that case how will you pay for the funeral?

This is the sort of information you will need together with a very basic guide to the meaning of relevant Spanish words.

SET BUILDERS: won’t be back to Almeria this year.

By Eleanor Hawkins ALMERIA has been devastated to hear that what it thought could be a fulfilling long term relationship following a very pleasing first date last year was actually a one night stand and that Game of

Thrones has dumped it.

The locations for filming of season seven of HBO’s popular series were announced on Monday (July 18) and no Almeria names were on the list, which did include Sevilla, Almodovar del Rio in Cordoba, Caceres, Zumaia and Bermo in Pais Vasco as Spanish

filming sites.

Due to be screened on HBO and simultaneously in Spain on Movistar Plus in the summer of 2017, season seven will consist of just seven episodes, directed by Mark Mylod, Jeremy Podeswa, Matt Shakman and Alan Taylor.

This newspaper talks about a bunch of drunk idiotic men chasing bulls through towns, and their barbaric deaths, as normal. Why is this violence perpetrated on sentient creatures allowed in 2016? Spain should be dragged into the 21st century. Shame on them for continuing the medieval massacres. You can have culture and tradition without cruelty.

By John Smith THE week of the bull running in Pamplona started with a demonstration by 75 young men and topless women, all wearing just pants, fake bull horns and covered in fake blood, protesting against cruelty to bulls. It ended with numerous injured and allegations of five violent sexual attacks including a rape and 11 claims of sexual assault.

It seems young men, many fuelled by alcohol or drugs or simply pure adrenalin and machismo, took it upon themselves to consider the body of any young woman an open invitation to transgress by touching them intimately.

Unlike Mardi Gras in New Orleans where women parade topless and kiss men to obtain beads in a general atmosphere of sexual frisson, the feast of San Fermin is quite different and has become an increasing nightmare for innocent women living and working in Pamplona since the brutal murder of a young nurse during the festival eight years ago.

Now, banners appear in the streets saying “No sexual harassment!”; “Assault is not flirting. Be careful!”; “No sexist assaults”; “Enjoy yourselves and let others enjoy themselves” and the city council says it is doing all it can to stamp out sexual assaults on women by increasing the number of CCTVs in operation and policing the streets.

With such large crowds and a finite number of police officers (said to be 3,400) and the fact there is activity al-

most 24 hours a day, it is almost impossible to guarantee the safety of women in Pamplona and sadly they have to be very careful and effectively provide their own protection during the week.

According to The Guardian Aritz Romeo, city councillor for public safety, and women’s groups in Pamplona are doing all that they can to prevent assaults and he is quoted as saying “I think the reasons are basically cultural;

they’re rooted in the false belief that men are superior to women and women are there to satisfy them. It’s a sexist and patriarchal culture. We in the council are not in favour of that culture and that’s why we believe while the police response is important, so is raising awareness to prevent it. Inequality between people is at the root of it all.”

He also told the newspaper “If you break the law in Pamplona, you will pay

for it. We’re working to tell people if you touch a woman’s backside, you’ll wind up in a police cell.”

Despite this rhetoric, 2016 has seen a terrible backwards step as far as violence to women is concerned. Much has been made of the ‘alien hordes’ from Arab States who attacked women across Germany on New Year’s Eve but the whole of Europe is beginning to see an outbreak of violence against women, both random and in the home which had seemed to be dying out.

Pamplona isn’t by any means the worst culprit but might just be an example of how society is moving the wrong way and in this particular case by starting with a number of topless girls and good looking lads to attract attention for what many consider to be a worthy cause, has perhaps actually delivered the wrong message to those travelling to Pamplona from all over the world.

This of course raises once again the matter of whether bulls should be treated in such a way and whether a civilised society should allow often drunken idiots to take their lives in their own hands by running in front of over excited agents of death. This year has seen three more deaths around bull running towns and the death of a young bull fighter.

If innocent women can be protected from assault then perhaps this is the most telling argument for banning the bull running regardless of the number of people who want to join in or the financial benefits it brings to the city.

Those who love the torture and killing of innocent animals obviously have no morals and don’t care about anything, so what can you expect from these people if they grope women? Ban the festival and change it to a musical festival!

Human interest When this world stops the abuse of children and humans we can perhaps worry a little about blood sport. Unfortunately most of these people would pass a poor human in the street but aid a dog! Pathetic.

MOJACAR is home to the only group in Spain, and indeed in Europe, to support a charity in Ghana that is working to try and get needy children off the streets and to provide them with an education and a decent meal each day.

Beatriz Garcia and Mirella Garcia, with the support of author Sara Lark and Inka Labsch, work tirelessly to raise funds for the Wonderful Street Academy charity, and on Tuesday (July 19) organised their fourth annual fundraising concert which included a performance by the charity founder Louis Wonder.

Money well spent

By Eleanor Hawkins SINCE 2012 Almeria Provincial Council has spent more than €1,292,000 on work on Olula del Rio, Public Works and Development Department head Oscar Liria revealed on Monday (July 18) during a visit to the town.

Quad involved in crash ONE person, whose details have not been released, had to be taken to hospital after a car and a quad crashed on Almeria’s N-344 road in the early hours of Saturday morning (July 16), 112 Emergency Services reported.

The accident, which caused the quad to catch fire, was reported at 7.10am and Guardia Civil officers, paramedics and firefighters were immediately sent to the scene.

Local Mayor Antonio Martinez Pascual and the visiting delegate discussed further work which is badly needed while touring Olula and Liria was shown areas which have benefited from the funds provided so far including the industrial estate and streets which have been resurfaced or given new signs.

Council off the hook VELEZ BLANCO Council is breathing sighs of relief after being let off the hook regarding a €6,100 fine it had been given which it has now been informed it won’t have to pay after all.

The fine was issued by the Segura Hydrographic Confederation over an illegal dumping of waste, however this has been cancelled

by Murcia’s high court.

The sentence accepts the council’s appeal, which claimed among other things that a ministerial order which evaluated the damage caused had been annulled by a court ruling.

Security needed for triage nurses

FRUSTRATED PATIENTS: Physically and verbally abuse nursing staff.

By Eleanor Hawkins NURSES at Almeria’s Torrecardenas Hospital A&E department are tired of receiving verbal and physical abuse over waiting times while on duty in triage and have demanded better security measures to guarantee their safety.

The triage, or patient classification, office is the first point of contact for patients, often after initial long waits, meaning nurses often end up bearing the brunt of their frustration,

SATSE nurses union has complained. In some cases the violent reactions have resulted in the police having to be called, the union reported.

To reduce the risks and guarantee nurses stay safe, SATSE has requested a security guard solely for triage, asked for the office to be moved to another area of the A&E department and also urged the Andalucia Health Service to take on more staff urgently to reduce waiting times.

New building, same roof view ALMERIA Provincial Council has presented a €2 million project to finally replace the ‘mirador’ (viewpoint) building on Moj acar ’s Pl aza Nueva and build a new town hall and police station, along wi t h i m pr ovem ent s t o Avenida de Paris.

The project, which was pr esent ed t o Moj acar Mayor Rosa Maria Cano this week during a visit by provincial council head Gabriel Amat and deputy Javier Aureliano Garcia, will consist of demolishi ng t he cur r ent t hr ee storey building and viewpoint, which dates back to the 70’s and has serious structural problems.

The project proposes to build a new town hall of the same height which will include a new view-

point on the roof.

Amat stressed the importance of the work for l ocal s and vi si t or s, explaining that the viewpoint is a great attraction for tourists which provides a stunning view of the coast, Garrucha, the plains near Turre and Sierra de Bedar and wi l l be i ncl uded on the roof of the new building.

The pr oj ect has t aken care to draw up plans for a pleasant looking building as it will be visible from a distance, the provincial counci l r epor t ed, and i t has been designed to blend in with the surrounding architecture.

Wor k on Aveni da de Paris meanwhile will provide a new, wider pavem ent and ext r a par ki ng spaces.

Bad trip for biker A MOTORCYCLIST from Pechina has been arrested and charged with an offence against public health and dangerous driving after falling off his bike upon spotting a police checkpoint while carrying drugs.

JWEN, aged 49, was carrying more than half a kilo of hashish when he approached the checkpoint near Huercal de Almeria on July 12, the police force has reported.

He immediately slammed on

the brakes but ended up on the floor, causing the driver of a car behind him to swerve and almost crash into a car coming from the opposite direction.

The bike was followed after the driver got up and sped away towards town, putting pedestrians at risk. Officers saw him park between two cars, drop his helmet and a bag behind a hedge and try to walk away.

After stopping the suspect, officers checked the bag and helmet and found six 100g blocks of hashish.

False alarm EMERGENCY protocols were activated at 5.30am on Monday (July 18) at Almeria’s ferry passenger terminal when security officers spotted a suspicious suitcase.

The case, which later turned out to have been forgotten by its owner, caused the police to decide to evacuate the 1,600 people waiting to board ferries as a safety measure.

Saint sails out in Summer tourney spite of the storm

By Eleanor Hawkins REGARDLESS of heavy winds, the Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of Garrucha and of sailors, sailed across the town’s harbour on Saturday (July 16) in keeping with tradition.

The much-awaited day saw the streets packed with locals and visitors who flocked to see an image of the saint paraded through the streets and onto a boat. Although sea conditions prevented the boat from carrying the image out to sea, tradition was kept and the virgin had her boat trip across the harbour.

Another high point came earlier the same day when the oldest active fisherman, 70year-old Juan Cervantes Barcelo, and oldest former fisherman 89-year-old Alonso Leon Casquet were honoured.

BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT: Six stages to come.

THIRTY players took part in the first stage of the Costa de Almeria 3x3 Basketball Tournament in Carboneras.

There will be six more stages over the summer, hosted by Vera, Garrucha, Antas, Pulpi, Tabernas and

El Ejido, with those wishing to be in with a chance to win the tournament required to take part in all seven stages.

Rapists’ sentence confirmed VIRGEN DEL CARMEN: The patron saint of sailors.

THE High Court has confirmed a total of 24 years in jail for two men who were found guilty by an Almeria Provincial Court of raping a woman they had invited to a ficti-

tious party. The rapists’ defence had appealed the sentence, however their appeal has been turned down and the two will have to do their time behind bars.

Hotel case reaches Strasbourg THE European Human Rights Tribunal in Strasbourg has agreed to hear an appeal against a sentence of July 2014 which declared as legal the municipal licence which Carboneras

Council issued for construction of Azata del Sol hotel in El Algarrobico.

The Strasbourg response, dated July 5, informs the appealers that the case will be examined by the tribunal

as soon as possible and that it will probably not be necessary for anyone to testify in person.

If the European tribunal decides the licence was illegal, this would allow for

immediate demolition of the hotel with the Azata del Sol developer liable to cover the costs for having built on protected land within Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park.

Brexpats in Spain THE vote to leave Europe has left an indelible mark with some expats feeling overlooked and disenfranchised. Expats who have lived here in Spain for over 15 years were denied a vote.

Thousands of expats in Spain rely entirely on their pension to survive, and while the downward trend of the pound is perhaps easing, this has already had an effect. Everything British people have taken for granted is in question.

Brexpats in Mijas was a Facebook group set up by five expats in the Mijas area specifically to gather relevant information and distribute it as soon as it is made available, but within two days of being launched the number of followers had reached close to 800.

The group was renamed Brexpats in Spain, since our predicament is shared by all British people who have set up their home and business in Spain. Our hope is that we can continue to expand, by people in other areas forming their own satellite portal to share and distribute information and resources provided under the Brexpats in Spain banner.

However, it must be stressed that we are not a politically biased group. Nor are we a protest group, or profit-seeking. We do not mean to change the outcome of the referendum. Our mission is to understand the issues that could affect our position as British expats here in Spain, and our aim is to gather and freely impart relevant information and changes to legislation.

In order to do this, we need your help, and the help of local experts and dignitaries in the community. Already, we have voluntary legal and financial advisers on our side.

Coke tip off THE Guardia Civil has confiscated 43 kilos of cocaine found hidden on a Turkish merchant ship in Carboneras port and is investigating the 21 crew members. The ship was searched following a tip-off from the Italian drug squad.

Food for all DURING the first half of this year 785,432 kilos of food have been distributed amongst families in need in Almeria Province, government delegate Andres Garcia Lorca reported.

Music to their ears

By Eleanor Hawkins THE first ever specific orchestra and band director’s course organised by the University of Almeria this week is providing a great success, so much so that the number of places offered had to be increased to meet demand.

Running from Monday (July 18) to tomorrow (Friday 22), students are receiving training from experienced national and international directors including Nayden Todorov (director of the Rousse State Opera and Philharmonic of Bulgaria) and will have the chance to try their hands at directing an orchestra, a band and a wind ensemble at the Almeria Music and Art School and Teatro Apolo.

Professor Juan Jose Navarro, one of the course organisers and directors, explained: “we’ll be dealing with directing techniques from start to finish and covering rehearsals and concerts specifically. We hope the students will end the course better prepared to direct any of the three groups.”

Forty students from all over Spain are attending the course and will take part in a concert by Almeria Symphonic Orchestra at Teatro Apolo at 9pm on Friday to end the week’s training.

More travel on the roads AS expected, the number of Africans travelling through Almeria on their way home for the summer has increased 33 per cent compared to last year.

Since the OPE (Straits crossing operation) began on June 15, an estimated 60,000 people have boarded ferries to Melilla, Morocco and Algeria at the city port, about 15,000 more than during the same period in 2015.

The end of Ramadan on July 6 saw a marked increase in the number of people who packed their families and possessions into their vehicles and took to the roads, and altogether three million are expected to pass through Spain this summer.

In 2015 the operation registered more than 2.8 million people in 620,000 vehicles.

This has led to around 700 people being stationed to help deal with the influx and the port preparing 2,500 parking places, a 22,000m2 emergency area on the docks and facilities for those waiting to board one of the eight ferries running between the city and African ports.

Spokesman brings some good news

By Eleanor Hawkins OWNERS of irregular homes in the Albox area were given good news last week at a meeting at the town hall with local Mayor Sonia Cerdan and Mario Jimenez, socialist spokesman at the Andalucian Parliament.

Jimenez had travelled to the town to announce parliament would be approving modifications to the LOUA (Andalucian Land Planning Law) on July 20 which would allow for regularisation of an estimated 30,000 illegal homes in the region.

The modifications, Jimenez said, would be pushed through thanks to the hard work of the

PSOE socialist party in Almeria and the Junta de Andalucia regional government and associations including AUAN, which has worked tirelessly to achieve solutions for innocent owners who bought homes in good faith unaware they had been built on land where construction was not permitted.

However the spokesman was quick to insist the modifications will not be providing amnesties for those who build illegally on purpose and explained it will cover very specific circumstances.

Sonia Cerdan said Albox was celebrating the imminent changes which could benefit hundreds of local homeowners.

Fraud suspect is identified at last A MAN from Albox has been arrested by the Vera Guardia Civil for alleged fraud after three people reported that he had cheated them out of money.

Investigations began earlier this year when the victims began informing the police force that they had been tricked. The first explained that the suspect had charged him €950 to supposedly speed up the process to obtain some pa-

perwork, which never happened, the second said he had handed over €800 after being promised cheap car parts and the third was told that for €160 he could get confiscated items back quicker.

Investigators pieced information together and were led to 34-year-old COG from Albox, who had been arrested seven times before over similar incidents.

Women’s institute reports on abuse DURING the first half of the year the Andalucian Women’s Institute (IAM) has provided service to 718 women who have suffered sexual attacks or abuse according to the institute’s latest report.

The institute provides free legal and psychological support for victims of sexual attacks or abuse, and can be contacted on 900 200 999.

Eighty-six per cent were Spanish and 56 per cent came from rural areas, the report stated.

Regarding the attacker, in 45 per cent of cases they are acquainted with the victims and in 56 per cent of cases the attacks were repeated more than once.

IAM director Elena Ruiz stressed the importance of raising citizen awareness and insisted that “all women have the right to say no at any time and under any circumstances and all men have to accept that no, with no conditions.”

‘Inconvenient’ arrests THE National Police has uncovered a scheme which introduced people from abroad to those willing to enter marriages of convenience in order to help them obtain residence permits in exchange for money.

Six people were arrested including the leader of the group, who put interested parties with cash to spare in touch with those looking for papers, the provincial police station reported.

Investigations began after

New centre opened FAISEM, the Andalucian Public Foundation for Social Integration of the Mentally Unwell, promoted by the Junta de Andalucia regional government, has opened a new centre in Pulpi to provide services for people with serious mental disorders.

The centre is on Avenida de Andalucia opposite the health centre in premises provided by the local council and will support around 20 people with 24-hour specialist attention available.

RIPPLES from the splash made by the recent Brexit referendum in the UK have reached rural Andalucia, and the wheels are starting to turn to try to prepare for the effects that a Brexit would have in the region’s agricultural sector.

A meeting has been called

in Sevilla for Monday (July 25) where investigators and analysts will be giving talks on the possible effects on local farming of the UK leaving the EU, which could be very serious as the UK is Andalucia’s fourth largest customer for exports.

The regional Agriculture, Fishing and Rural Development Board is also working on a study of the expected impact of Brexit and has reported that in 2015, the UK bought almost €870 million worth of Andalucian food and drink.

FOR a part of the world where the weather is so conducive to spending time outdoors, Andalucia surprisingly heads the list of Spanish communities in terms of childhood obesity, with around 40 per cent of children overweight.

Around 10-12 per cent of the community’s children are officially obese, with a further 25-30 per cent overweight, and the shocking figures reveal that the number of well-padded whippersnappers has tripled in the last two decades.

This is not helped by cynical marketing campaigns which target children and teenagers, with a range of nutrient-free, sugar-packed products endorsed by irresponsible celebrities such as Beyonce, Katy Perry, and Lionel Messi, although the ultimate culpability clearly lies with parents.

The reasons for Andalucia topping the list of shame are manifold, but chief among them is a lack of adherence to the traditional Mediterranean diet, which is rich in vegetables, nuts, olive oil, oily fish, fruits and cereals, as families increasingly claim they have less time to produce staple dishes such as lentils or pulse-based soups.

Andalucian children also do less sport than their counterparts in northern Spain, with too many cars on the road and a largely woeful presence on school curriculums, with at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, and a minimum 20 minutes of intense sport three times per week recommended for the young.

Transparency is lacking FOLLOWING failed attempts on the part of Vera’s OCM (municipal citizens’ observatory) to obtain information on accounts and debts relating to Galasa public water company from Almeria Provincial Council, the group has lodged a complaint with the Andalucian ombudsman’s department.

The group has reported that it requested details of the debt, which it has a right to access under current transparency laws, via the provincial council’s online office on April 29, but was told this entity did not

have the power to provide the information and were advised to contact the company directly.

Although this was done, no response was received at all and a further notification also found no reply from the provincial council’s presidency.

The group is concerned as to the management of Galasa and wishes to study the way debts are distributed, and has been informed that the ombudsman’s office will respond as quickly as possible.

By David Thomas A COUPLE leapt for their lives as their boat was tossed onto the rocks in Mojacar.

Shocked customers at the Dolce Vita restaurant watched the drama unfold - and leapt into action to save the couple.

It all happened after the pair were out to sea in their four-metre longboat in rough seas.

The engine suddenly died, leaving them at the mercy of the pounding surf.

They tried frantically to paddle to safety with their hands, but the waves drove the white, fibreglass open boat towards the rocks, right in front of the startled diners.

And, as they smashed into the rocks, amid four-foot breakers, cafe customers abandoned their meals to run to their aid.

They braved the crashing waves to help the distressed pair ashore.

Even the most reclusive of players may now be lured from their hobbit holes to hunt and train Pokemon, in order to join a craze which has seen millions take to the streets and interact with the invisible dinosaurs, birds, rats, snakes, dragons, and other critters that now infest our towns and cities.

The game uses your smartphone’s GPS and clock to make Pokemon ‘appear ’ around you, with the aim to travel around the real world

nabbing the colourful blobs before training them, building up their strength and enabling them to fight each other.

Expect to see groups of shifty-looking Pikachu hunters casting furtive glances at each other as they congregate around Pokestops, places that allow them to collect items such as ‘Poke Balls,’ or gyms to train their multi-coloured army.

Reduced sentence for murderer A MAN who killed his exwife in the home they shared in Nijar and hid her body underground has had his jail sentence reduced to 16 years by the High Court.

The killer’s lawyers appealed the initial 18 year sentence issued by an Almeria provincial court claiming the jury stated he planned to hide the body in advance. This has been ruled out as an aggravating circumstance and the sentence reduced as the appeals court decided although the home was in a rural area it

wasn’t isolated and burying the body nearby meant it was more likely to be found.

Khahil E admitted to deciding to kill his ex, who still lived in the marital home after their 2013 divorce, on September 30, 2013 after she brought home another man.

He explained he was jealous and strangled her when she fell asleep before wrapping her in sheets and burying her. He then told her family she’d gone to France. They reported her missing and her body found in January 2014.

Inspection visit of new facility site

By Eleanor Hawkins LOCAL authorities have been on a visit to inspect the site of a new building and construction rubbish treatment plant in Huercal-Overa.

The plant, being built by Ines Maria e Hijos SL behind Las Laborcicas industrial estate is a private initiative which intends to reduce the visual impact of rubbish from building works, avoid deterioration of the countryside, prevent land and water contamination, stop wasting natural resources and contribute to the development of sustainable activities under the European Union environmental and energy policies.

The local mayor, Domingo Fernandez, Maintenance and Conservation of Infrastructure and Services Councillor Blas Sanchez and Environmental Councillor Emilio Perez visited the site, where the mayor explained that the plant has all necessary licences and will provide service to the entire area.

Good news for bathers SCIENTISTS have claimed that this will not be a bad year for jellyfish off the coasts of Almeria and stressed that so far no Portuguese ‘Man o’ Wars’ have been detected in the Mediterranean.

Although last year didn’t seem a particularly quiet one where jellyfish were concerned, Spanish Oceanography Institute researchers have stated this is the third in a fouryear low reproduction period.

However, scientists are still unclear exactly what it is that attracts them to the coasts but believe over-fishing, climatic change and water contamination have a lot to do with it.

Safety first EMERGENCY services and Mapfre Foundation have launched their 2016 drowning prevention campaign on Almeria beaches with an aim to raising awareness.

The campaign provides information on how to avoid accidents in the water and gives tips on what to do in the case of an emergency.

Last year 12 people drowned in Almeria Province, most of them in August in the Cabo de Gata-Nijar park area, and emergency services Andalucia received hundreds of calls regarding accidents in pools or the sea, the 061 service has reported.

By Eleanor Hawkins AN office computer skills course recently imparted at Huercal-Overa’s Guadalinfo centre as part of the council’s Huercal-Overa Impulsa programme has come to an end and the 14 pupils have received their diplomas.

Education and Youth councillor Belen Martinez reported that the fourmonth course concentrated on the three most important computer skills required in office environments: text processing, spreadsheets and presentations, and was well received by pupils, mostly students and job hunters.

The next course planned is on web design and will begin in September, and those interested can sign up at the Guadalinfo centre as of August 22.

Education grants approved for students PULPI Council agreed at its latest plenary session to provide grants to local youths who spent time between September 2015 and June 2016 studying at universities abroad and passed at least 50 per cent of

their subjects.

Once announced in the Official Provincial Bulletin, those who wish to apply for these grants will have one month to do so at Pulpi’s Edificio Mercado.

Extradited doctor Man hurt to remain jailed in crash A COLOMBIAN paediatrician who was extradited to Spain recently for questioning suspected of sexually abusing various children is to remain in prison, a judge has decided.

Upon arriving in Spain on July 8, 42-year-old C A R L was sent straight to jail in Soto del Real, Madrid, and having refused to answer questions from the judge in charge of the case he is to remain behind bars to await trial.

The doctor, who has already served time in his home country for similar offences, worked at the health centre in Pulpi until September 2013, when he fled to Colombia fearing he was under investigation.

THERE was yet another accident on the A-334 road between Huercal-Overa and Baza at around 1am on Thursday (July 14).

A van heading towards Albox was rammed in the back by a lorry when it was about to turn off the road onto a rural track, leaving one of the drivers injured and requiring medical attention at the hospital in Huercal-Overa, emergency services reported.

This was the fourth accident on the same road in four days.

Urracal and Purchena, the second Olula de Castro and Gergal and the third Lucainena de las Torres-Turrillas and Tabernas.

CSIF trades union has complained that 90 per cent of the helmets used by Infoca forest firefighters in Almeria Province, about 300, have been out of date for two years and the remaini n g 1 0 p e r c e n t ’s r e c o m mended lifespan ended last month.

Not only that, the union has reported, but as well as being too old the helmets are of the wrong type and are aimed for industrial, not forest, work, and fail to meet the 2014 regulations regarding forest fire fighters’ helmets.

The first of the workshops, on public speaking and non-verbal communication, was held on Friday (July 15) and attended by 15 youngsters aged between 15 and 2 5 wh o p i c k e d u p

tips on how to structure a speech and present work in public.

When giving speeches, the group learned, what we say and how we say it are important but so are what we don’t say, and what our bodies tell our audience. The different techniques for speaking in public were outlined during the workshop, which the youths later said they found very informative.

Mall project for sale

By Eleanor Hawkins A PLOT in Los Gallardos and project to build a shopping centre have been put on the market for €600,000 and appears on at least four property websites as of last week.

Back in the real estate boom, when the Levante area was expected to sprout homes like new leaves in the spring, a company bought the land, drew up projects, obtained permissions and even paid for the building licence.

However the financial crisis struck, the company went bust and the much-awaited shopping centre, meant to serve Mojacar, Turre, Garrucha, Los Gallardos, Carboneras, Villaricos, Palomars, Lorca and Huercal-Overa, was never built.

Now the area hopes a purchaser will appear and get the project back on track. “It was a project we were very interested in as it would have generated employment and boosted the local economy.

“It was to have a supermarket, cinemas, bowling alley and shops,” Los Gallardos mayor Maria Gonzalez said.

From the start, Gonzalez explained, the local council approved the project and the Junta de Andalucia regional government did likewise.

As the centre was to be built on land where construction was not permitted, the project was approved as an item of social interest, which both entities authorised.

BP counts the cost of oil spill

ADVENTURE APP: The virtual reality treasure hunt is a hit.

Pokémon is Go THE Nintendo Company has seen its biggest share price in 30 years after the international launch of a special Pokémon Go App for mobiles with the value of the company jumping by a staggering 70 per cent, giving it a worth of just under £20 billion (€24 billion).

It originally seemed the Pokémon concept would be short lived but it continues to survive going from strength to strength and generating significant profits for the Pokémon Company, 32 per cent owned

by Nintendo and Niantic a Google based company.

The partners invested $30 million (€27 million) to produce the virtual reality treasure hunt where players hunt monsters appearing on their smartphones. It’s already top of the free-to-download App chart.

The App is free, but profits will be made by players purchasing Pokéballs through Apple or Google who receive 30 per cent of every purchase, this could run into millions of euros a day worldwide.

A SUGGESTION to meet the required deficit in the Spanish economy by making companies pay tax in advance based on anticipated profits has been rejected by the Secretary General of Spain’s largest trades union the CCOO as being unworkable and little more than a joke.

Small businesses are still not fully recovered from the weakness of the economy, so those in trouble who actually pay a much higher percentage of tax than conglomerates and large companies could simply fall by the wayside and damage the economy more.

New Chancellor rejects austerity

By John Smith IN the run up to the Brexit referendum, the then Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne warned the nation that in the event of a leave vote carrying the day, he would be forced to take emergency action to further cut spending and to introduce higher rates of taxation.

The new Chancellor, Philip Hammond who has reportedly had his eyes set on this job for some time, has immediately rejected such a knee jerk reaction and has indicated that he will study the economy and take action as and when needed but most likely this will occur at the planned Autumn Budget statement.

In 2010, Britain had one of the worst budget deficits in the European Union and Mr Osborne decided to make it his crusade to not just cut the deficit but to bring it to surplus by 2020 which meant ongoing cuts in investment in all of the ministries and therefore in the economy itself.

Towards the end of his time in post, even he had recognised that this was not going to happen and it looks as if the new government will endeavour to pump some life back into the economy.

It is going to be a difficult project as the initial reaction from the financial world was to drop British stocks as if they had a disease, knock the value of the pound and look to move business away from the UK to other parts of Europe.

astute (or perhaps avaricious) investors have seen that there are profits to be made in buying depressed shares, that the pound isn’t quite as bad as they thought and many are keeping the bulk of their investment and banking staff in the UK. IT has been announced that Japanese company Softbank has made an offer of £24 billion (€28.8 billion) for British technology firm ARM which directors are going to recommend that shareholders accept.

This will give encouragement to those who said that business would continue following the decision to leave the European Union, although others may compare this to the descendants of a stately home owner who have to sell the family silver in order to survive!

ARM has been a huge success since being founded in 1990 in Cambridge where it designs microchips which are used in most smartphones around the world including Apple and Samsung.

The Japanese company Softbank is run by entrepreneur Masayoshi Son and is without doubt one of the world’s largest technology companies. Having recently ‘gobbled up’ Vodafone Japan and American company Sprint, it still has sufficient funds to pay the bulk of the acquisition from funds held, although it will also take advantage of a loan from Mizuho Bank.

within the next five years as it will concentrate on expanding its invention and development areas.

The new government is pleased to see further investment from a nonEuropean source even though Mrs

May had previously mused as to whether it was good for the country to see so many companies being taken over by foreign investors.

Even if the government has reservations about such a sale, there is little it can do to stop it, unless it is in a position to prove that it was not in the national interest to allow such a sale to go through, which would be difficult to justify.

There were originally three major UK-based technology companies based in Britain’s ‘Silicon Valley’ of Cambridge. First to be purchased was Autonomy which was taken over

by Hewlett Packard, followed by CSR which was taken over by chipmaker Qualcomm and now ARM looks to be the last of the triumvirate to be sold to a foreign investor.

The BBC has reported that one of the original founders of ARM Hermann Hauser said: “This is a sad day for me and a sad day for technology in Britain.

2ARM is the last British [technology] company that has a global reach. It gave Britain real strength. It was a British company that determined the next generation microprocessor architecture.”

Another EU agreement to stop tax evasion

By John Smith THE European Union and Monaco signed an agreement aimed at improving tax compliance by private savers on July 12 which will require that financial information is exchanged automatically between the Principality and the Union.

This is part of an on-going programme which has seen similar agreements struck between the EU and Andorra, Liechtenstein, San Marino and Switzerland and when ratified is due to come into force in January 2018.

The agreement upgrades a 2004 agreement that ensured that Monaco applied measures equivalent to those in an EU directive on the taxation of savings income. The aim is to extend the automatic exchange of information on financial accounts in order to prevent taxpayers from hiding capital representing income or assets for which tax has not been paid.

Basically, the agreement provides for Monaco to meet exactly the same standards of transparency and exchange of information as if they were full members of the EU. Such information may include release of names, addresses, tax identification numbers and dates of birth of each member state’s residents with accounts in the Principality, as well as other financial and account

balance information.

Slowly but surely, it is becoming more difficult for private individuals to avoid the payment of tax in their place of domicile, although no doubt those who are really rich will still be able to settle in low tax areas such as Monaco and Switzerland whilst corporations and even cartels will endeavour to hide their profits through technicalities and loopholes although even they are beginning to feel the pinch.

Most of the UK Overseas Territories as well as Guernsey, Isle of Man and Jersey had already agreed to recognise this programme although whether they will continue to do so once Britain does leave the European Union is just one of the many questions that need to be answered when final exit negotiations take place, especially as some of those territories were named in the recent Panama revelations and Spain continually accuses Gibraltar of being a tax haven which it in turn denies.

OTHERS THINK IT BIT hard to work out where to start this week. Probably finding myself in a similar position as our new prime minister!

I did consider the speed Theresa May met up with Nicola Sturgeon was almost bordering on the obscene. The statement issued afterwards was even more so.

Do the rest of the British public have to now actually wait until some sort of appeasing deal can be worked out with Scotland and the EU before we are able to invoke Article 50 and get on with the new future the majority of the UK voted for?

If this is a sample of the new tough leadership and firm decision making we’ve been told to expect,

we’re in trouble already.

In a wholly democratic event, the United Kingdom voted to leave the EU. That should be the end of the story. If others are not happy with the result, let them hold their referendums or whatever’s and if necessary butt out, allowing those who elected to leave, to get out and get on with it.

Any dithering can only be detrimental to our new role in world affairs and is a disgraceful, non-democratic action, instigated by petulant losers who are now busy throwing their toys out of the pram; which is perfectly OK as long as those elected by the British public can be trusted not to scrabble about on the floor picking them up.

Horror, sympathy and sorrow at the tragic events in Nice this week.

How many of these same atrocities will have to take place in the UK before we declare war and really be-

gin to do something about it? GB naturally stopped its enemies entering the country in world World War 2.

If it was common sense then, why are the same policies not being instigated now?

Interesting to see the coup was thwarted in Turkey mainly due to the public taking to the streets and siding with President Tayyip Erdogan. I suppose that wouldn’t have anything to do with the fact that untold thousands of them are already packed for the trip to Europe!?

by UK companies. Yet we live in a global world now. Many of today’s leading multinational companies are based in continental Europe, Japan, the US. The UK market comprises just one part of the global markets, and not a particularly big one.

British expatriates often hold on to their UK investments. Many continue using their UK financial adviser, with the result that their financial planning is often more suitable for a UK resident than a Spanish one. This can have unexpected consequences. You need a diversified long-term strategic asset allocation plan based on your circumstances, needs and risk profile.

Diversification gives your portfolio the chance to produce positive returns over time without being vulnerable to any single area under-performing.

There are various levels of

diversification you should have in your investment portfolio – 1) Asset allocation, spreading your capital across different asset classes.

2) Diversification across geographical areas, sectors, company size (capitalisation), etc.

I WAS flicking through TV channels the other night, in the vain hope I might find something that was either not a multi shown repeat, or didn’t feature Ant and Dec, when I chanced upon a movie that I could not actually remember seeing before.

I had no idea what the title was, but it was certainly not one that seemed familiar.

I had probably not bothered to watch it in the past, because it was one of those chest thumping, look how great we are, American blood and guts war films.

Not my favourite type of entertainment.

It had been running for some time, but what had me riveted was the sequence I had tuned in to.

It seemed that a group of

IT seems that the year 2016 could go down in history as the worst so far in the 21st century as the world appears to be ‘going to hell in a handbasket!’

There’s a breakdown of law and order across Europe with terrorism accounting for hundreds of deaths so far.

In the case of Turkey, they don’t need home-grown terrorists (which without doubt exist) when they have an increasingly authoritarian government and an army staging a half-cocked coup.

The referendum could lead to the break up of both the UK and the EU and whilst I was derided by some for saying the British public knew more about voting for acts on Britain’s Got Talent than making a rational decision on our future, stories abound of people who thought that they were making a protest vote against the government

THE WORLD’S WOES: A sign of the times. rather than placing a vote that decided the future for generations to come.

Racism is more blatant than ever and it seems the referendum result appears to have given certain people the feeling they can abuse anyone who isn’t white and speaks with a regional accent.

Mrs May, remember IT’S of some relief to see the Conservative party has managed to conduct its leadership election in such a way that rather than wait until September, there was a quick decision to appoint Theresa May as leader once the other candidates either dropped out due to insufficient votes or resigned.

Whilst it’s common knowledge Mrs May was critical of Gordon Brown taking on the Prime Minister role without calling a general election, this is a different situation as the country needs stability, both for its economic prosperity and in negotiating a sensible and well organised withdrawal from the EU. The make-up of the new cabinet, a mixture of old and new as well as Leavers and Remainers, indicates Mrs May intends to oversee the Brexit rather than overrule the result.

Her new ‘Minister for Exiting’ David Davis has already indicated ‘the button is likely to be pressed’ by the start of 2017.

The delay, allows the government to formulate a strategy on what it hopes to achieve and how, especially as it would like to see Scotland onside rather than fighting for independence. The main problem it faces is from the 27 member states it’s divorcing and whilst Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, said he wants to see a friendly parting, only time will tell.

All we hope is that whilst negotiating, the government remembers us and the one million plus expats living in EU countries.

Summer heat and tourist invasions SHORT SUPPLY: Restaurants soon ran out of supplies in the summer.

Ric Polansky Ric Polansky moved to Mojacar in 1969 as a pioneer developer. He reads extensively and has travelled in South America panning gold and looking for El Dorado.

ONCE you lived through those early hot summers you became wise. You had suffered, paid your dues, grew those creases in the brain to allow you to adjust.

The roads were crowded, so were the restaurants. That’s bad, but not as bad as the fact that the restaurants couldn’t get any supplies either.

So, if you came for gambas, they were all gone, as was the cold beer and watermelon. The traffic was so intense fresh supplies never arrived.

Lots of the purveyors of the goods simply drove to the beach and auctioned off what they had (usually cases of coke).

Well if you could put your pants on and keep the socks off your ears time had taught you that the world fell apart in the summer.

In order to survive you had to stockpile, in your own house, enough varieties of food so that you could escape the long queues and certain heated arguments.

You just stayed home and flourished by your own ingenuity within your own castle home.

If you were really a bad guy you’d overstock

and sell your goods to the restaurants. But, if you did do that, no one would play dominoes with you during the quiet non-tourist times.

The roads, back streets and all parking belonged to the folk from Madrid that arrived with stress and left with a great deal more.

They parked where they liked, were boister-

ously demanding and ill mannered. After all, we were just locals, considered hillbillies or at best no smarter than donkeys.

That type of grief and confrontation was easily avoided by staying home.

Oh, and we partied too. First we sat about in a circle and listened to each tell their stories of

confrontation and denigration by the visitors. We laughed until we fell from our chairs. We could be cruel too.

Purposefully blocking in Madrid-plated cars, or dropping a small fish memento in one of their rolled down windows. Once the conquering invasion horde claimed their conquered parking spot, they rarely moved their car until the day they left two weeks later.

Early those mornings you could hear the screaming and curses in the distance. We all felt good.

It was like music to our cursed and disparaged ears.

Come September 1, we got our land and lives back. The seagulls returned to the beaches by midday and by two we returned again en masse to our favorite haunts.

We were greeted as returning family and shared in the many delectables purposefully hidden back from the marauding tourists to be shared with only us, prodigal sons returning.

Of course it became an annual event of homecoming proportions. Another unnamed Spanish fiesta, celebrated and deserved by all.

And not least the fear among Leavers (the 17.4 million who vote d une qui vocal l y t o Leave) of dragging out Brexit or watering it down in any way, not to mention that the resulting internecine warfare in the Tory party would make the current Labour, err, mayhem look like a teddy bears’ picnic.

Finally, a piece of good news and resounding win for ‘Remain’ is that Larry, the No.10 cat, hasn’t done a runner like so many others around him. Following in the paw prints of several Downing Street moggies, his role as Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office is “to keep Whitehall pests at bay.” (Let’s hope he stays up to, umm, scratch to keep at bay any potential disillusioned, disaffected Leavers) Reportedly, Larry’s being kept in so he can’t escape and grab a seat on the EU gravy train. Collared, in other words, so he can’t flea?

Banish the bullfighting now THE July 14-20 edition had an article where it is announced there will be a workshop to be a bullfighter. I am appalled that there still is such a thing.

No matter what people say that it is a tradition (meaning something that is there a long time, but that can change!) it remains extreme animal torture and cruelty to a mammal. And mammals have the exact same feelings as humans, like fear, anxiety and pain. During this workshop they will definitely use calves (yes, baby cows) to stab them with spears. What a disgusting and disgraceful school. Shame on the mayor of Antequera to let this happen.

He also expressed his condolences for the recent death of Victor Barrios.

Nobody deserves to die, but Mr Barrios CHOSE to go into the ring to torture and kill bulls. In this case he got killed instead (although the bull was also killed and they even want to kill its mother, how silly’s that!) A death of a toreador only happened after 30 years. In contrary of all the bulls that get killed every year (roughly 70,000 in fights and God knows how many in “practice”). I would say “those who kill by the sword die by the sword.”

All of this cruelty has to stop now. It gives this beautiful country a bad taste to most of the world.

Sheer hypocrisy TO be sure the vast majority of those expats ‘appalled’ and ‘horrified’ by the bullfighting tradition are a great stain on our society. There appears to be an urgent and indulgent psychological need to feel superior to others with no real understanding of the facts.

Now there is a terrific and promising Spanish campaign against bullfighting, chiefly led by young environmental and animal rights activists who promote and live lifestyles in accordance with the values of non-violence.

I’d readily wager that many of these expat opponents happily eat meat procured from the supermarket, thus contributing to an ongoing genocide of literally billions of animals and destroying our environment.

They then have the audacity to go online

and moan about something that pales in comparison to the carnage they engage in every day? Give me a break. No, I wasn’t imagining things, I’m willing to swear he seemed seraphic, we were both under Mozart’s spell.

Today a repeated experience with the slow movement of the Sinfonia Concertante for violin and viola. His expression seemed almost more ecstatic than last week. To attempt to prove my theory, a few hours later I played a CD of the same movement. I could hardly believe that this had exactly the

same effect on Bertie as before.

What do readers of my letter think?

Pot meet kettle I WAS amused to read a letter in the Euro Weekly News Issue 1619, headlined ‘Horrible English hypocrites.’ A lady wrote, including lots of (sighs) how the English in Spain don’t learn Spanish, only shop in English shops and eat in only English bars and restaurants.

I’m English, I’ve lived here since 2001, my Spanish is not as great as it should be and my Spanish grammar is

atrocious, this I have to admit, however, I do speak Spanish in shops, etc. and indeed any other time it’s necessary so to do. I shop in Spanish shops as I couldn’t possibly afford to shop in English ones and eat and drink in both Spanish and English restaurants and bars, depending on what I’d like to eat on the day, just as I would in England.

However, what really amused me is that she keeps referring to English rather than British, obviously all Welsh, Scottish and Irish she knows speak perfect Spanish. For someone, supposedly, so obviously enwrapped in the Spanish culture, I’m surprised she sends her letter in English to a free English, sorry, British newspaper.

Finally, she lives in Torremolinos, which when I was last there on holiday many years ago, has been an English, oops, British stronghold for more than

Knitted Knockers Spain has certainly come a long way since my friend Karen and I formed the group here in Andalucia. Thanks to the Spanish and English language press, plus being listed on the international web site of knit tedknocker.org we’re now supplying knitted prosthesis to women who have undergone surgery for the removal of a breast in many parts of Spain.

Volunteer knitters, like donations, are always welcome but the yarn used to knit or crochet a knocker must be 100 per cent mercerised cotton.

Almost none of the money lost was ever in a ‘safe haven’ and this is where OPP can assist. Sheldon still remembers how sick and upset he felt when he thought that he had lost such a large sum and wants to help others recover what in some cases could be their life savings.

Once they proceed, it is likely that it will take 12 to 18 months to obtain a final court ruling and in the event of the judge making an award to the person whose money has been taken, there will be a 15 per cent charge (plus IVA) from OPP and the lawyers will keep any interest that has been awarded by the court.

Should the case be unsuccessful, then no costs are charged to the client.

Can you think yourself fit?

COULD you become fitter just by thinking about exercise? A BBC 2 show that aired in Britain tested the latest science on how to stay healthy without breaking into a sweat and it appears that a technique called mental or motor imagery could work. It involved imagining yourself exercising and is used by athletes to give them the edge over rivals. To test the theory volunteers, including some who couldn’t exercise because of health problems, were given a mental exercise to do five days a week for a month.

Beforehand, the strength in their calf muscles was tested with volunteers pushing as hard as they could with their legs against a weight machine

which recorded the force. An ultrasound took an accurate reading of their muscle size and mass before an electrical impulse was sent through their bodies to measure how much of their muscle they were actually using.

Following that they then had to imagine themselves pushing against the machines at least 50 times five times a week while not moving.

After a month, they did the same test and results found their strength had improved by an average of 8 per cent, with one woman seeing her strength increase by 22 per cent.

The scientists said that muscles hadn’t grown but the volunteers were actually using more of the muscle fibres they

had as the mental imagery of the activity helps the brain ‘rehearse the skill’ and teaches it to activate more of the muscle.

Super healthy burger A LONDON based nutritionist and chef has developed what is claimed to be the world’s healthiest burger.

Libby Limon’s ‘nutri-burger’ is packed with over 50 superfood ingredients such as hemp protein powder, duck egg, chaga mushroom, sesame seeds and coconut oil.

It is served with a matcha gluten-free bun and a beet, fermented soybeans, quinoa and mushroom patty and with purple and orange sweet potato fries and a healthy shake.

The meal also provides over 100 per cent of the recommended daily allowance of fibre, vitamin A, vitamin C and iodine and is rich in B vitamins, magnesium and zinc.

According to laboratory reports, it is the equivalent of eating 1.5kg of blueberries and 3kg of cooked broccoli. Due to the highly nutritional value of the meal, experts claim it is also the perfect hangover cure.

Not as much needed SHORT and strenuous bursts or longer more moderate exercise? Experts vary in their advice on how you should exercise to reap the

most benefits to lose weight but a new study has compared the effects of varying amounts of vigorous and moderate exercise.

The results found the ‘lowest effective dose,’ the smallest amount of exercise to make a difference to health, was the equivalent of 105 minutes a week which is below NHS guidelines in the UK of 150 minutes of moderate activity per week.

The scientists said a previous Harvard University study sug-

gested people should undergo 75 minutes of vigorous exercise a week, but another 15-year study found it made no difference.

Their study showed short bouts of sweat-inducing activity amounting to just 35 minutes a week were found to reduce the risk of dying from heart disease.

They said that whilst exercise was important and key to better health, people maybe did not need to do as much as they think to see benefits.

Facial colouration seems to be the most important in determining how healthy someone

looks.

Research has identified that faces with lighter, redder, and yellower skin were seen as the healthiest and there is some biological processes associated with these colours.

Lighter skin is associated with the ability to absorb more vitamin D. Greater redness may indicate more efficient circulation and blood supply to the skin and people with yellower skin tend to have healthier diets, rich in fruit and vegetables.

Tanning also increases skin yellowness and makes faces appear healthier, but the yellowness brought about from a healthy diet is obviously preferred to tanning.

Bed closure denounced AROUND 11,000 hospital beds will be closed this summer in Spain.

The Nurses’ Union Satse, warns this is around 10 per cent of beds as a result of the summer’s cuts, criticising that this will involve fewer services and professionals to cover citizens.

Satse said the closure will result in an increase in waiting lists, both medical and surgical, and ‘bunching’ of patients in an emergency, forcing professionals to serve them in areas not authorised such as in hallways.

In addition to bed closures, hospitals have fewer professionals as they’re not properly replaced when staff take leave.

This week a reader has asked the doctor about a rash on her neck which she thinks could be caused by the hot weather: DEAR doctor, This year it seems to have got very hot very quickly and the last few days I’ve had a nasty sore rash on my neck which I think might be because I’ve been sweating a lot. It’s really itchy, gets very red when I’m hot and feels very rough.

Do you think I’m right and it’s a heat rash or caused by sweat, or could it be something else? What can I do to relieve the itchiness?

The only thing that seems to calm it down a bit are very cold showers but afterwards my skin feels even rougher, are there any particular creams I can use on it?

I’ve been taking hayfever pills but don’t know if I should really be doing that, what do you think?

Once I get rid of this rash, is there anything I can do to stop it coming back?

The doctor replied: It’s true that high temperatures and sweat can irritate some peoples’ skin and cause dermatitis, particularly those with light-coloured

skin. It’s caused mainly by exposure to heat. If, however, rashes appear without seeming to be related to the heat or after eating certain foods, taking medicines or being bitten by an insect they should be studied to rule out other causes. The first step would be to visit a specialist in allergies.

Heat-related skin problems tend to calm when the temperature goes down, so avoid spending too much time in the sun and take frequent showers to remove sweat. After a cold shower, dry skin carefully and apply moisturising lotion but stay away from corticoids. Antihistamine creams can help keep itching under control and can be used for long periods when needed but should really be prescribed by a specialist in allergies.

Children in particular should see a specialist in paediatric allergies.

Unfortunately there’s no way to prevent rashes other than avoiding long exposure to heat and sun.

Memories of Flamenco ON Friday July 22 at 8pm in the Patio de Luces of the Provincial Palace in Almeria City, a memorial work, ‘The Early Days of Flamenco in Almeria,’ is being presented to the public.

The work is about the renowned flamenco musician Pepe Sorroche, and has been compiled by the journalist Luis Garcia Yepes and edited by the Institute of Almerian Studies.

The work has been developed in 180 pages in the form of an interview with 14 chapters, and unveils the ins and outs of Sorroche’s life, his relationship with other flamenco performers, and the rise of flamenco as an art form in Almeria Province.

Born in 1942, at the age of 10 years old Pepe Sorroche began to sing in Choirs and Dances, and later created the group Los Jilgueros. He developed his work in flamenco from a very young age.

He was a finalist in the fifth edition of the National Contest of Cordoba in 1968, and released numerous albums over the course of a long and varied career.

By Matt Ford CABO DE GATA Natural Park will host the 13th Classics in the Park series of concerts as of Friday, July 22, which will bring the works of Chopin, Albeniz, and Ravel, among others, to the protected reserve.

Spread over six days, the gigs were presented by the mayor of Nijar, Esperanza Perez, and festival director, Javier Rovira, and provincial subdelegate, Andres Garcia Lorca, with the trio announcing that the Rodalquilar botanical garden will be used as a venue for the first time, hosting several concerts.

The closing event will be held in Rodalquilar’s church, which will be specially kitted out to cope with the sweltering temperatures, as Garcia Lorca highlighted the “consolidation of an event that has become a summer musical reference for the province.

“The places chosen for these classical concerts, such as the amphitheatre or the botanic garden provide a unique cultural addition

Perez added that “this festival adds so much value to the municipal culture of Nijar every year.”

Conchi Aguilar exhibition has arrived in town A NEW exhibition has touched down which showcases the work of Conchi Martinez Aguilar until the end of July.

Born in Albacete, Conchi Aguilar began her artistic career in the city’s Universidad Popular, as well as attending painting courses throughout Spain with a number of renowned masters of art including Antonio Lopez Carralero and Paco Molina.

She has participated in numerous collective exhibitions in a number of major Spanish venues, being involved in Albacete’s famous historical group ‘Quince Navajas del Tercer Centenario.’

Conchi’s paintings reflect her passion for light and the play between clarity and shade. She paints nature enveloped in the sunrise, along with objects illuminated by the light passing through windows to courtyards.

The exhibition is one more attraction that Mojacar has to offer to its visitors and residents alike.

Throughout the entire year and particularly in the summer, the organised art exhibitions run continuously in the town’s two art galleries, as well as from time to time in the Multiple Use Centre at the Fuente.

This active participation in the art world also spreads to other private galleries located in the town, with whom the council collaborates on a regular basis. In addition, there are the two art foundations, Fama and Valparaiso, the latter of which Mojacar Council collaborates to grant residential scholarships to artists from around the world.

ALMERIA’S Provincial Council is banging the drum regarding its Street Culture (Spanish: Cultura en la Calle) initiative, which they hope will infiltrate “every corner” of the province during July, August, and September.

Disciplines wedded to the scheme include theatre, music, visual arts, and craft workshops, among others, with the council liaising with its municipal counterparts in order to organise an impressive tally of 420 different events.

The calendar of events will run to September 30, with theatre and magic performances, film screenings, music and dance concerts, a number of art exhibitions, astronomy gatherings, and bullfighting.

Hosted by sound and lighting engineer, Malcolm Rushton, the event was a complete sell out and included a raffle with more than 20 prizes, many donated by the charity’s sponsors Furniture Plus.

A magnificent €1,516 was raised, all of which will go directly to support the work of the charity in rescuing, healing and rehoming abandoned and ill-treated dogs. Helping Hands also help people in emergency situations wherever possible.

Those brave enough to leave their sofas and videogames and take the zombie experience to the next level will have the chance to spend a night on the streets trying to survive a fictitious zombie invasion until evacuation teams arrive the next morning.

Sensational swimmers gearing up for event THIS upcoming weekend (July 23 and 24), Carboneras will host its traditional summer swimming competition, ‘Voyage to the Beaches of Carboneras.’

This is the 25th edition of the competition, and 100 people from Almeria Province and beyond are expected to participate.

The race will be divided into five categories, according to age group, and those

wishing to participate must pay a fee of €5.

Carboneras Sports councillor Pedro Jose Venzal underlined the importance of this sporting competition and said that “it is an important event on the provincial sports calendar.”

The three winners in each category will receive trophies for their hard work and accomplishments.

Recognition for former resident

By Eleanor Hawkins ALBOX has honoured a recently deceased local resident, Alonso Contreras Moreno, by naming a street after him.

The change of name for former Calle Carmen Amaya was requested by local residents from the San Juan district of town and approved at the latest council plenary session as a way of expressing Albox’s gratitude for Contreras’ dedication to his neighbours and his home during his life.

Contreras voluntarily collaborated with many local groups and charities including Cruz Roja,

Civil Protection and neighbours’ associations during his life and also worked to defend the rights of and promote integration of the gypsy population.

He is sorely missed by all who knew him, said local Mayor Sonia Cerdan, and Albox has wished to express its gratitude to him and condolences and support for his family.

“This is a simple gesture, requested by the townspeople, to express our gratitude for all Contreras’ work, dedication, love and efforts for Albox,” said Youth councillor Lorena Ibanovich.

Alleged cheaters caught in car

By Eleanor Hawkins TWO men from Barcelona were arrested in Albox and face charges for alleged fraud against the public authorities after Guardia Civil officers caught them helping a third man cheat on the theory part of his driving exam.

The person sitting the exam was found to have sent details of the exam questions from a mobile phone to the

two arrestees, who were found sitting inside a nearby car, and was being told the answers through a concealed earpiece, the police force reported.

After taking all three to the barracks for questioning, officers discovered that the two men had offered their services on the internet and were charging €2,000 per exam.

The case has been passed over to Huercal-Overa court.

Support for rider ALBOX Council has pledged its support for local motocross competitor Cristobal Galera de Amo, who will be taking part this year for the first time in the Supercross SX 125 cc Spanish Championships.

The young local sportsman is carrying the name of Albox across the country and has already taken part in provincial and regional competitions this year, explained Sports councillor Mario Torregrosa.

“Boosting sports activities in the municipality is very important and we want to help local sportspeople succeed,” the councillor said.

Motocross has many fans in the area, which has in the past hosted both competitions and training. “Thanks to people like Galera de Amo we are again attracting motor sports enthusiasts,” Torregrosa concluded.

Accusations flying over fire brigade

By Eleanor Hawkins SOCIALIST party representatives within Almeria Provincial Council have asked council leader Gabriel Amat for an immediate solution to serious problems with the provincial fire brigade.

The socialist spokesman, Juan Antonio Lorenzo, explained that firefighting in towns and villages with fewer than 20,000 inhabitants is down to the provincial council

and claimed that this service was not being provided correctly as there was a general lack of resources.

Lorenzo warned that the council’s lack of action was putting safety at risk and asked Amat to behave responsibly and act immediately.

While other areas were said to be lacking, the main issues Lorenzo spoke of were in the Almanzora valley, serviced by Albox fire station under an agreement between the local

and provincial councils. To keep its part of the agreement, the provincial council must provide €150,000 per year and also promised to replace the current fire engine, Lorenzo explained.

Although the agreement was signed a year and a half ago, the spokesman complained, there was no sign of the new engine and the provincial council had only sent €75,000 of the required €300,000.

However the provincial authority was quick to respond, sending Lorenzo copies of proof of bank transfers made to Albox Council amounting to €150,000 for 2015 and stating that the funds for 2016 would be passed over as soon as the paperwork was signed.

However there was no mention of the missing fire engine, which Lorenzo has stressed is desperately needed as the current one is unable to go.

In the end, what’s in a name?

By Eleanor Hawkins LOS INHUMANOS, a band from Valencia which became popular in the 80s, has lodged a complaint against Zurgena’s mayor and sports councillor claiming that they have been using the band’s name to promote the village fair.

The band reported that the council’s website was using their name to promote a concert on August 28 and could well be committing an offence by using their intellectual property without permission.

However Indalo Show, the company in

charge of organising the concert in question, quickly responded that the website was actually announcing a concert by Santi Sanchez, who was a member of Los Inhumanos from 1988 to 2003 and is now part of Santi Sanchez y Amigos Inhumanos, in itself a registered name.

The company explained that although it received an email from Los Inhumanos two days after the concert was announced, it took no notice as it was not using their name and also stressed that the mayor and sports councillor had nothing to do with organising the concert.

A healthy collaboration LA CAIXA Foundation has signed a collaboration agreement with San Marcos and Los Carriles adapted sports clubs and will provide €36,000 in funding.

The project, Autonomia en Practica, aims to boost self-confidence and teach disabled players sporting attitudes and teamwork and will employ three specialist technicians in adapted sports.

Sports included are football, basketball, rhythmic gymnastics, athletics, cross-country running and petanque among others and disabled people taking part will be taught the importance of sport for their physical and mental health.

Searching for a new horizon FAR from the Brexit vote seeing a supposed exodus of Brits back to Spain, the result has rather been a huge hike in the interest of Britain-dwelling citizens in moving to Spain.

A Barcelona-based real estate firm has reported a massive increase in requests from people eager to leave the UK following the referendum, presumably with an eye on being firmly established in Spain or elsewhere by the time the negotiations come to pass.

I’ve never seen

ONE Christmas Day afternoon a couple of years ago a good friend and I, whilst in a state of advanced festive refreshment, started talking about rock concerts we would like to have seen. Having witnessed most of the renowned live acts of the 70’s at various times (The Who, Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart, Van Morrison, Eagles, Paul McCartney, Queen) my first pick for the ‘wished I’d have seen them’ category was, quite obviously, The Beatles.

“Saw them,” said my friend and noting the look of surprise on my face added: “At The Cavern. A few times actually when I lived in Liverpool.” Wow, what a thrill to have been there virtually at the dawn of a musical phenomenon that changed popular culture.

My second selection took a slight liberty. I saw the Rolling Stones when they put on a great show at Wembley Stadium in 1982, but confessed for a longing to have seen them in their mid-60’s pomp with the accompanying arrogance and anger. “Saw them,” was the reply from across the table, “Liverpool Empire 1965. Very loud and rowdy.” So that was the two most famous rock bands of the 60’s he had seen in their first incarnations when stardom beckoned, a pretty impressive claim to have on your concert-going CV. For my third choice there was only one person left to go to. Here we could muse together on the opportunity that hardly came to anyone on our side of the Atlantic and practically no one on the European continent for that matter, seeing The King, Elvis Presley.

“Seen him,” he said, to which I instantly replied, “Oh come on. Elvis never played a concert outside of the United States.”

“I know that,” said my friend, “that’s why it was lucky I saw him in Las Vegas.” Noting the incredulous look on my face he explained, “I was working over there in 1973.” To quote the great Eric Morecombe, himself half of another fantastic live act: “There’s no answer to that.”

But between us eventually there were live acts in common we both felt sorry to have missed. I regretted very much never seeing The Band about whom Bob Dylan (for who they were a backing group in the mid-60’s) once said, “They were the only group good enough to be called simply The Band.” Talk-

ing of Dylan my friend had never seen him, but being the devotee I am I have attended a number of his shows, two of which are at opposite ends of my personal concert spectrum.

The ‘86 show at the NEC in Birmingham was the worst concert by a major performer I have been to, but his 2009 show in the same city is right up there with the very best.

When I was at school friends of mine took extra paper-rounds and washed every car in

the street to raise funds for David Bowie or Led Zeppelin tickets, two acts I never saw and sadly never will, that being a time when it was generally accepted that The Who were masters of the concert stage and I count myself very fortunate to have seen two stunning shows in 1975 and 1976, which left me in no doubt their acclaim was well deserved.

Others I am sorry to have missed are The Byrds, Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt and, despite seeing various editions of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, never saw the four of them together. Another group who I would dearly loved to have seen are The Rat Pack, Frank Sinatra and his motley crew of associates.

Their carousing, interaction with the audience and virtuosity living on in the performances of Rod Stewart, Bruce Springsteen and Michael Buble, a trio of renowned live performers which from experience I can vouch for.

All this talk of live shows has started me thinking about my next one. Yes, you’ve

guessed it The Who with who I have a date with in Birmingham later this year.

On the face of it there is something faintly ridiculous about two men into their 70’s playing and singing songs of teenage angst, but when Pete Townshend blasts out the opening chords of ‘Substitute’ and Roger Daltrey does his bellowing, there is no other place on earth I would rather be.

But whoever our favourite live bands are we should never under-appreciate the concert experience. I have lost count of the times I have been to a show and thought how well I know this song and the many different circumstances in which I have heard it, and suddenly I am in the same room, albeit a very big one, as the Eagles playing Hotel California.

In moments such as those we become elevated by the music forgetting about how far away the car is parked, the drive home or work tomorrow, which is surely the essence of every great live concert.

At last we had some rain!

WEDNESDAY July 13 was cooler as a result of clouds and a little rain for many readers, even a heavy storm for some. The cooler day was welcome after a week that started with the highest temperatures of the year so far and saw plants benefit from a cooling wash to remove some engrained dust as well as natural irrigation. But looking at the advanced weather forecasts from Marbella to Barcelona that might be all the rain there is until August.

Interestingly I just threw away an old article that indicated that the heaviest months for rain back in 1999 were March, July, September, October and November and there was some rain every month. Yes in those days garden maintenance was less onerous.

Fill your garden with butterflies

BUTTERFLY BAIT: Choosing the right plants will help to attract them.

Buddleja davidii (commonly known as summer

lilac or butterfly bush), verbena bonariensis, lavender, perennial wallflowers, marjoram, papavers and poppies, phlox, foxgloves, rhodanthemums and dahlias are all known to be particularly attractive to butterflies. If you wish to see a variety of different species flying past your windows choose more

than one of these plants and group them together in blocks.

Their bright colours will be sure to bring winged visitors along, but to encourage them to stay keep your plants well watered to help them produce lots of nectar and make sure the flowers don’t wilt.

But by then we were acclimatised to long hot days. In the end it only rained six times and three of those were on weekly rest days.

The walk followed paths and tracks along the northern border of Spain,

zigzagging into France a few times for a few kilometres and passing through wonderful scenery and villages every few days to clean up.

It was interesting to see how gardens and allotments were designed to cope with long cold winters and hot short summers. For many it was tough and some villages were down to less than ten all year round inhabitants. In one case there was only one.

Scary Facebook Life-saving device Mike Senker

In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I DON’T do Facebook and I don’t do Facebook for a reason. I actually have an account because years ago I signed up I but don’t use it.

The reason I don’t use it is because it’s scary intrusive and I don’t like being told what to do. For instance, there is an advert on TV for toilet tissue and at the end of the ad it says follow us on Facebook … are you mad?

Why on earth would I want to follow a company that makes loo rolls on Facebook?

Maybe if I subscribed to ‘Faecesbook’ I might have some interest but otherwise none, nada, nothing!

How can you have 500 ‘friends’? I understand a bit if you are famous or something, bands etc. so people can see where you are performing or want to be a fan but a normal person having 500 ‘friends’ is nonsense! I bet all you Facebookers out there don’t even know half the people who are your ‘friends’ on there.

Yeah, yeah, I know you post lovely photos and tell people that your home is going to be

empty for the next two weeks; all important stuff.

If I want to send my family photos, that’s what I do, I send them to my family. I don’t send them to 250 friends of friends who then decide to ‘like’ my pics.

The scariest thing about Facebook is how it suggests people you might want to be ‘friends’ with. I decided the other day to have a look at my account and there they were pages of suggestions of people I may like to connect with.

I don’t allow this app to access my email address book or my contacts so I was amazed to see the name of a lady that I vaguely remembered because she had a very unusual name.

I had met her once. She worked in Sunglasses Hut in Santa Monica 20-odd years ago, and at that time I had a lot of shops in the UK and if I saw an outstanding salesperson I would say ‘if you ever come to the UK here’s my business card, give me a call.’ I received an email from her saying ‘nice to meet you and if I ever come to the UK I’ll get in touch’ and that was it.

I never heard from her again until Facebook dug and dug and somehow decided that I might want to be friends with a stranger I had a conversation with 20 years ago in a shop 12,000 miles away…I rest my case!

SAFE WARNING: The device helps to alleviate vulnerability.

GUARDIA CIVIL traffic officer, Jorge Torre Sarmiento, assisted by marketing and design expert, Roberto Perez Marijuan, has invented a device they think will speed up the time in which other road users are advised of the presence of a disabled or broken down vehicle, thus saving lives as a result.

When a vehicle becomes disabled, perhaps due to an incident or breakdown, the natural reaction of the driver is often to put hazard lights on, attempt to restart the vehicle, call for assistance, put on a high visibility vest and place warning triangles on the road advising of the vehicle’s presence.

Often this can take between eight and 10 minutes, during which time the vehicle is left in a vulnerable position presenting a hazard to vehicle occupants and other road users.

To try to alleviate this problem of vulnerability, the officer invented a device called ‘Help-Flash’ which can be used as a first indicator of a hazard whilst the correct proce-

dure of laying out triangles is carried out.

Jorge Torre Sarmiento is well known locally for inventing a variety of devices. The 47-year-old officer, based in Vigo, graduated in criminology and joined the Guardia Civil, despite his desire to be a designer.

With a number of successful patents to his name already, ‘Help-Flash’ is his first invention that will hit the mass market, and will do so with the help of Perez Marijuan.

‘Help-Flash’ is a small emergency light, powered by a conventional battery, which emits a flashing light visible up to a kilometre away. Activated by a magnetic support it can also be used as a flashlight.

Stored in the glove box, it activates in seconds and when placed outside the vehicle (magnetic contacts keep it in place) it allows the driver to then place warning triangles and make the vehicle occupants secure.

Sarmiento is passionate about the project and believes “it can save lives.”

Can community make money?

Our community has a debt, mainly caused by the owners who for years have got away with paying no community fees. We recently changed administrators and the new one has driven the debt down, and got us back in the black, just a little. We still have repairs that need doing and the complex needs a repaint and security gates.

We have almost a hundred parking spaces below the flats, many of which are not used. We feel these spaces could be rented for a modest fee to owners and holidaymakers who don’t have a parking space. Are we allowed to do this? Our administrator says, “The community can’t be seen to be making money.”

Whenever I am called to a home where owners have a

howling, barking, destructive, digging, house soiling dog or one showing symptoms of an anxiety related behaviour, where it is apparent that the dog has an inability to cope with life, I always ask if there has been a death, separation or indeed a divorce which could have triggered the problems as this behaviour is a typical expression of canine anxiety.

Another extreme behaviour pattern I have observed is dogs going to the bottom of the garden, and staying close to walls which is often seen when a dog’s instinct tells it that it is dying.

Golf cart of the future Less is more MERCEDES have been busy designing the golf cart of the future, dubbed “a real sports car” and have finally released the new model.

With a range of 50 miles and a top speed of 19mph, the MercedesBenz Style Edition Garia Golf Car boasts a sublimely unique design with a high-tech interior and could even be road legal in the USA courtesy of a full lights

and indicator set.

Designed in classic Mercedes style the golf car features a refrigerator and stowage tray, the rear spoiler doubles as a golf bag holder, while the pedals are marked with a ‘plus’ and ‘minus’ sign to indicate the brake and accelerator for the 3kw electric motor, extendable to 11kw for short bursts.

There is an integrated 10.1 inch touchpad where players can see the layout of the course and their positioning, even using an electronic scorecard. Windscreen wipers, heater and headlamps can be activated easily in ‘sports’ mode.

Only two show examples have been officially produced but there are surely plenty more to come very soon.

GOLF CAR: A new hightech future for the golf cart.

IN the looming battle of the automatons language has become the new weapon as Jaguar announces it would prefer to avoid the term ‘driverless cars,’ instead preferring ‘driver-focused autonomous technology.’

Rather than seeing the driver take a literal and metaphorical backseat, Jaguar plans to use artificial intelligence to augment and safeguard the driving experience.

This would involve benefits

like autonomous lane changing using satellite technology to predict the quickest, safest route, and warning of hazards around corners, also offering stability control and adapting for weather conditions. The concept stands in marked contrast to the futuristic predictions of other firms who would see drivers essentially become passive passengers taken to their destinations while playing on the phone or working.

A FOURBALL Texas Scramble was the team game on Thursday July 14 at Marina Phoenix. The result was very close with less than two shots between the first three teams.

The winners were Les Armfield, Don Atkins, Tony Scott and Stewart Laing with 60.4 nett. Second place went to Isobel Jones, Jim Budd, Rosalie Fardon and Marcos Caparros (61) followed, in third, by John Lally, Mark Upchurch, Jamie Jamieson and John Thompson (62.2). There were nearest the pin prizes for Peter Warnham (9), Tony Scott (13) and Les Armfield (15).

Monday’s individual stableford was a success for Spaniard José Urroz, who won the men’s division with 38 points, followed by playing partner Jim Budd (36) in second and Ali Mahmud (35) third.

The ladies division was won by Carole Taylor on 37 points ahead of Margaret Budd (34) in second. Jackie Dale (30) was third and Jim Budd won the only two’s prize (14th).

Girl power wins at Indalo Bowling Club GIRL power came out on top when two of the club’s top lady bowlers reached the final of the very popular 2016 Handicap Singles competition recently played at Indalo.

Unlike golf the higher the handicap the better the bowler, with the higher handicap players giving shots to the lower handicaps.

Forty bowlers entered and there were some very competitive matches over the course of a few days, played in very hot weather.

The outstanding match of the tournament was the semi-final played between Maggie Holmes, an ex Spanish squad player and Debbie Colquhoun, a current Spanish squad player (both with a handicap of nine).

One spectator said the match was good enough to be “on the telly” and on the last end the score was tied 20 to 20. Maggie had the last wood and managed to get a very kind ‘clip’ off another wood which gave her the

winning shot. A fantastic match with some wonderful bowling and it was sad that someone had to finish second!

The other semi-final was played between Ann Reynolds and John Mannall, the last man standing! Both played a really good game with a lot of accurate steady bowling but Ann came out on top 22 to 16.

The final between Maggie and Ann was competed in blistering heat but they battled on and gave the spectators a great match to watch. For a while it was neck and neck but then Maggie forged ahead and won 22 to 12.

Many thanks to all the markers who also braved the heat and to John Colquhoun for the organisation that was necessary to make this a very enjoyable competition.
