Raising for Ghana MOJACAR has once again been supporting fundraising efforts for a charity which works with needy children in Ghana. A concert was held on Tuesday and there will be further activities next week.

Town hall in turmoil Big spending

Albox Town Hall has once again been thrown into turmoil by an Andalucian High Court of Justice (TSJA) sentence which declares the March 7 plenary session which invested Sonia Cerdan (pictured) as mayor as null and void. The case was put to the court by PP opposition leader Juan Pedro Perez Quiles, who has always stated that Cerdan’s appointment was not valid as she had left PSOE, the party she ran with at the last local elections. Perez and his party have been a bone of contention for Albox socialists for some time. In fact, the whole chapter of the book of local politics began when former mayor Rogelio Mena was reported by the PP opposition for refusing to facilitate access to information and council documents. Although Mena had been a PSOE candidate and won the local elections with ease, the controversial case caused the political party to ask him to step down and hand the office over to his second in command. However, he responded by leaving PSOE, taking eight councillors with him, and set-

Nasty scare A COUPLE had a fright when their boat was thrown onto rocks in Mojacar recently. Customers from a nearby restaurant watched the drama and rushed to help the pair. See page 16

New name ting up Socialistas Albojenses political group. When he was eventually sentenced and banned from office, Cerdan stepped into her mentor’s shoes and was pronounced mayor. Yet the court has agreed with Perez that her appointment was not valid as she was no longer a member of the party she ran with during the last elections.

As the PP lodged a request for an urgent extraordinary plenary session to be called within 10 days to choose a new mayor on Tuesday (July 19), Cerdan hit back saying her legal department was analysing the sentence and intended to appeal. “This is a coup, Perez is going against what the voters want and proving that he couldn’t care less about Albox

and is just a spoiled brat who wants the job. I would be ashamed in his position, knowing the group I am up against has a majority and the public placed him in the opposition,” Cerdan scathingly commented. Perez meanwhile responded stating that he was not looking for power but felt that it was time things were done right for a change.

A STREET in Albox has been renamed to honour a popular local man who recently passed away. The change was requested by local residents to mark his tireless work for the community. See page 64
