Low-cost brings millions to coast By Gemma Elvins-Quinn Low-cost is the way to go at Alicante-Elche airport with the terminal serving two million passengers from January to July. These airlines transported 18.1 million passengers in the first half of the year in Spain, 13.9 per cent more than the same period in 2015. AlicanteElche is the fourth most popular for low-cost airlines behind Madrid, Barcelona and Malaga. Alicante’s two million was an increase of 16.9 per cent compared to last year and more than 11 per cent of all low-cost passengers. Low-cost airlines, including the likes of Ryanair, easyJet and Vueling, accounted for 49.4 per cent of passengers to and from Spain, with traditional airlines capturing 50.6 per cent of air traffic. UK passengers led the lowcost arrivals to Spain with 4.87

million passengers, 35.9 per cent of the total, following an increase of 15.2 per cent from last year. The figures come as low-cost airline easyJet announced it had reached 20 million passengers in Alicante-Elche airport since it began operations in Alicante in 1999. According to a statement, easyJet has been growing in Alicante ‘significantly’ leading to the numerous connections it has

today to destinations in London, Edinburgh, Geneva, Liverpool, Hamburg, Milan, Belfast, Bristol, Basel, Glasgow, Manchester and Newcastle. In 2000, easyJet transported 84,704 travellers to and from Alicante and last year, the figure reached 1,483,035, a substantial increase that demonstrates the commitment of the company for this city. The airline said for 2016 they plan to increase the figure in re-

lation to 2015, since in the first half of the year they have already transported 741,631 passengers, an increase of almost 10 per cent compared to January to June last year. The CEO of easyJet in Spain, Javier Gandara, said the fact they had reached 20 million passengers was “very significant,” adding “Alicante is an attractive destination for our consumers and we hope to continue growing.”
