Brush with death By Sam Croft Setting foot in Axarquia is often synonymous with surprise, because the area always seems to have something new to offer. Unexpected details, hidden corners, and curious traditions are always waiting to be discovered in this jewel of Andalucia. And there just may be no better time to visit than Easter, as countless tourists were lucky enough to discover this year. In Nerja, thousands of visitors stopped by for a week of delight and mystery as they smelled the
burning candles, heard the awed silence and swaying step of the processions, and saw the dizzying sight of throngs of people stretching out from one end of the town to the other. Numerous Brotherhoods came together to partake in the official processions, which featured various thrones, some so hulking and enormous that it seemed impossible that they would manage to make their way through the narrow streets. People of all ages got involved in the festivities, and more and more in recent years, the tradi-
tions of old are getting mixed in with the new. This year it was not an uncommon sight to see children in traditional procession garb chowing down on Easter eggs and chocolates along with their timeworn Spanish treats. Nerja was far from the only Axarquia municipality that got into the holiday spirit. In VelezMalaga, the town was loaded from one end to the other with excited Veleños, who chowed down on the traditional holiday treat of Ajobacalao (garlic cod). Meanwhile in Almuñecar and La Herradura, the town was an
absolute whirlwind of activity, with throne after throne passing through the streets as tourists came from far and wide to get into the holiday spirit and soak up the atmosphere of the Costa Tropical.
Citizens shaken after car crash A DRAMATIC car accident took place on March 26 in Nerja, resulting in significant damage and frightening by-
standers, although luckily only resulted in minor injuries to those involved. See page 16
