PLUCKY voyager takes in breathtaking sights

Mojacar made its mark this week on a young man embarking on the walk of a lifetime.

Matthias Klima, a 19-yearold student from Bavaria set off on a cross-Europe walk last month. Starting at the rock of Gibraltar, he will finish the walk in the Turkish city of Istanbul and expects to arrive there sometime in September.

This week, the intrepid traveller arrived in Mojacar and enjoyed a walk along the paseo maritimo, taking in the views.

Klima told Euro Weekly News: “Mojacar is very beautiful and I enjoyed passing through the beach area.” He added that he was surprised to find so many English people around the area.

During his walk along the beachfront, Klima stopped and chatted to some expatriates who took an interest in his adventure.

Swift, a keen walker himself, described Klima as a “very determined young man” and wished him all the best on his travels.

Members of the Mojacar forum are figuring out how they can send Kilma an ‘Indalo man,’ a symbol of Almeria, to bring him luck in his travels.

This is the second epic walk Klima has undertaken, having

completed a walk across the United States last year.

Kilma, who is on a gapyear, said he walks “because it is the oldest form of travelling and makes you slow down and take in the beauty around you.”

In an interview with Euro Weekly News, he described funny moments when trying to converse with Spanish locals and described people he had met as “very friendly and helpful.”

His route will take him up the coast of Spain and France, down through Italy before taking a ferry to Greece, hopping across the Greek islands and eventually making his way through Turkey up to Istanbul.

Klima’s walk is sponsored by hiking-shoe company LOWA but is mostly selffunded.

The young German said he was always grateful for offers of a place to sleep and hoped to be hosted by people who hear about his journey.

Lights out to support Hour of the Planet HUERCAL-OVERA, Pulpi, and Almeria City were only several of the municipalities in the province that took part in the Hour of the Planet on March 19.

Lights were turned off for an

hour in certain neighbourhoods in an effort to show support for the planet. Every year, cities from all over the world participate in this environmental initiative.

Drunk driver arrested POLICE in Huercal-Overa arrested a man for drunk-driving.

The 36-year-old was spotted swerving as he was driving around the roads and police eventually pulled him over in Calle Granero Viejo.

The man was breathalysed and subsequently charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

Power to the people A NEW mobile application has been launched in Albox which will allow locals to have their voices heard more easily and quickly. Residents can download the app and

then can use it to send comments or photos directly to the town council, along with suggestions about potential improvements or problems within the community.

Hearse heist in Olula del Rio ends in crash INVESTIGATIONS led to the arrest of three youngsters

By Sam Croft GUARDIA CIVIL Officers in Olula del Rio have arrested three teenagers for allegedly taking a hearse on a wild joyride.

The vehicle was prepped for a funeral service and parked outside a funeral home when the funeral workers and driver heard voices outside saying, “You take it or I’ll take it, we’re going to Cantoria!”

They ran outside and confirmed that the vehicle had been stolen as the keys had been left in the ignition.

The victim advised the Guardia Civil, and officers began the search for the vehicle. They quickly located it at the side of the road that joins Olula del Rio with Cantoria, crashed and badly damaged.

Further investigations eventually led the police to the three youngsters, who have been arrested as the presumed perpetrators of the heist and subsequent car crash.

ONE of the first things you learn when you study EU law is that one of its main aims is to protect EU citizens who move to other EU countries.

In one important European court case, it was said that any EU citizen can claim “civis europeus sum” – I am a European citizen. So every Brit working, living or owning property in Spain has the basic right to be treated in the same way as a local, and that basic right means that they can get a job, start their own business, or buy a property on the same basis as Spaniards.

They can’t be made to pay more taxes than Spaniards. In most cases, they can use public services such as health on the same basis as Spaniards and they can even vote in local elections.

Depending on the final outcome of any post-Brexit deal, all of those rights could vanish if the UK leaves the EU. Brits wanting to buy property in Spain could be stopped from doing so in certain areas (as they are in Switzerland).

Brits could be made to pay unfair extra on their rental incomes (as France tried to do before it was stopped by the

EU) and they are likely to find access to local health services becomes more expensive and difficult, as it is anywhere outside the EU. Further, Spain, as a member of the Schengen zone, is bound by EU rules to administer a work permit system for highly-skilled workers from non-EEA countries. It is also entitled to stop lessskilled workers from outside the EEA from working at all.

You could avoid some of those problems by applying for long-term resident status. But it is largely up to Spain how it deals with such applications. For example, it could impose requirements that you speak excellent Spanish and are integrated into Spanish culture and even as a long-term resident you wouldn’t have rights you enjoy as an EU citizen, for example to have members of your family come and join you.

What do Brexiters say?

First, they point out that Brits lived in Spain before the EU. That’s true. But they had no automatic right to work, run a business and so on without the say-so of the Spanish government. Rich Brits,

like the prominent Out campaigner Lord Lawson, with his house in France, are probably fine. Countries always welcome the wealthy, and they can pay extra taxes and charges. Less rich Brits may well find things harder.

Second, they argue that the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties will help. But the problem with that argument is that Article 70 of that convention, the clause they rely on, only protects rights and obligations ‘created through the execution of the treaty prior to its termination’.

It is very unclear what those words mean in the case of Brexit. They would probably stop Spain from confiscating a house bought before Brexit – although the European Convention on Human Rights would probably prevent that anyway. But it is hard to see that that clause would give Brits any continuing right to be treated as an EU citizen in the years after Brexit, when it came to matters such as the rights to work, not to pay extra taxes, to use public health care, to buy further property, or even to carry on living in Spain.

Further, it would be for the Spanish courts and lawmakers to interpret and apply this rule, there would be no right to complain to the EU if it wasn’t respected. So the claim that the Vienna Convention offers any solid protection to expat Brits is simply incorrect, and even Brexiters do not claim that anything in the Vienna Convention could help Brits who merely plan to live or work in Spain but have not yet done so.

Third, one can also argue that the UK would do a deal with EU countries to protect the position of British expats, but since Brexiters want to be able to stop or control migration from other EU countries to the UK, and since any deal would have to be even-handed, we can’t expect that any such agreement would give Brits living in or planning to live in Spain anything like the same rights they enjoy now.

The truth is Brexiters care much more about meeting migration targets than they do about the position of the one to two million Brits living on the continent, or the millions more who would like to move to the continent when they can.

Do vote Please vote, but understand that ‘fear articles’ like this one are just that, they have no basis in fact this is a piece of fiction designed to scare. Look at the real facts and then make your minds up. Tony Kenny

VERA will have two representatives in the upcoming Clio Raid Rally in Morocco.

Lorenzo Haro and Gabriel Carmona, travelled to Tangier to join some 50 vehicles to take part in the cross-desert rally to Marrakesh.

The event, in its second year, is a combination of adventuresport and humanitarian work.

The teams race across the predetermined route, stopping to distribute aid in forms of clothing, medicine and school equipment in villages in the country.

The organisation also provides education and training to teachers and social workers as well as helping build water pumps and other facilities.

ADVENTURE: Vera drivers ready to race and help the needy.

The two drivers will deliver items donated by sponsors, including Vera Council and residents of the town.

All participating vehicles are Renault Clios, either owned by the entrants or rented from the official organisation.

In the case of Haro and Cameron, they bought their own vehicle and adapted it to meet the event’s requirements.

Speaking up for Down Syndrome CELEBRATING and encouraging equality

By Sam Croft VARIOUS citizens in Almeria Province came together last week to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day, which took place on March 21.

On March 18, more than 500 people participated in a flash mob in the La Rambla Amphitheatre in Almeria City,

where individuals of different ages and backgrounds together their shared love of dance and equal rights.

Meanwhile, the organisation Down Almeria used the opportunity to fight for equality in schools. Although a lot of progress has been made over the years, the association feels that more could be done. Rep-

resentatives from Down Almeria pointed out that the ideal situation would be for youths with Down Syndrome to be fully integrated into classes with other children, although they acknowledged that the schools do not always have the resources to make this possible.

In Andalucia there are 6,652 people with Down Syndrome.

THE National Police have arrested seven people for their alleged involvement in a wide-scale marihuana trafficking operation that had been developed throughout Almeria Province. Five marihuana plantations have been dismantled, and 1,008 marihuana plants, 500 grams of hashish, 120 grams of cocaine and â‚Ź23,000 in cash were discovered in six home searches.

YOUNGSTERS may be interested in Viral Zombie, a flesh-crawling feast of fun that will hit Huercal-Overa on May 28.

The activity consists of a gymkhana (a physical activity circuit) and participants must outsmart and outrun different zombie-related obstacles that will try to prevent them from arriving alive at the finish line.

Nightmare in Almeria A PAIR of kidnappers have been sentenced to serious jail time following their violent abuse of a man whom they took captive in an abandoned house and brutally assaulted. The incident occurred many years ago in September 2012 when one of the culprits tricked the victim into helping him at the abandoned residence in Almeria, purportedly to collect bricks.

Once they arrived the other scoundrel was awaiting them with a knife and intimidated the man into undressing. He was then stripped of his mobile phones, credit cards, and sunglasses before being tied up and repeatedly beaten over the head.

The assailant then backed off on the advice of his partner leaving the man with serious injuries to his head, face, back and hands.

The violent offender has been sentenced to six and a half years in prison while his accomplice, who lured the victim to his appalling fate, will face two and a half years.

Eco-warriors rescue decaying castle site REPORTS have been submitted calling for works

By Sam Croft NOW that the demolition of the Algarrobico Hotel is a sure thing, the environmental organisation Friends of the Cabo de Gata-Nijar National Park has a new mission.

The group has sent reports to the Junta de Andalucia regional government and the Carboneras Council calling for

some long overdue restoration work on the Mesa Roldan Castle, located in Carboneras.

The castle, declared a Place of Cultural Interest in 1985, is abandoned and decaying. In the reports, Friends of the Park argue that the owners must comply with conservation and maintenance regulations, and also that more historical information about the castle should be available for visitors.

A TEACHER from the Sierra de los Filabres Secondary School in Seron has been dismissed for allegedly showing sexual videos to students and promoting gender violence. He is also being investigated by the authorities over the incident and will possibly face legal consequences.

The teacher is accused of showing pornographic images and videos to students on his computer and mobile phone. He also allegedly said that “there should be a sport like shooting women, where the more you hit her, the more points you get.�

Representatives from the Junta de Andalucia regional government made it clear that the accused has not only been dismissed from the school, but is not currently working at any school in the province, or in Andalucia. Seron Mayor Juan Antonio Lorenzo emphasised the efficiency of the educational system for removing the teacher as soon as the alleged incidents occurred.

Opposition claim tourism improvements ignored PROPOSALS dismissed by majority vote

By Matthew Elliott POLITICAL opposition group, Somos Mojacar, has criticised the governing council for what it called, ‘a smear on Mojacar tourism’.

In a recent plenary meeting, the group submitted more than 20 proposals relating to suggestions

Hate crimes double LAST year 14 cases of hate crimes were registered in Almeria Province: eight related to racism, four to ideology, and two against disabled people. Although none of them ended in death, this number represents twice as many hate crimes as there were in the province the year before.

In Almeria, as in the rest of the country, the main reason for the hate crimes was racism and ideological reasons. A 2013 study ‘Xenophobia in Andalucia. Analysis in municipalities with a high density of immigrants’ carried out by the University of Almeria, drew the conclusion that seven of the nine most xenophobic municipalities in Andalucia were found in Almeria, El Ejido, La Mojonera, Vicar, Roquetas de Mar, Garrucha and Pulpi. The study interviewed 600 Spanish citizens in Andalucia over 18 years of age.

In spite of these findings, Almeria Province has registered a relatively small number of hate crimes in relation to the amount of immigrants in the province, although The Agency of Fundamental Rights of the European Union has estimated that between 60 and 90 per cent of victims of hate crimes do not report the incident.

The group also suggested promoting short breaks and activity holidays during medium and low seasons and looking at ways of increasing ‘family tourism’ by improving attractions and facilities for this market.

Many of the points raised by the group focused on environmental aspects, with suggestions on how tourism can be improved without impacting on the environment.

Somos councillor, Carlos Rodriguez, accused the council of singling out the suggestion of the tourist tax and ignoring the other proposals.

New National Police HQ THE head of the directorate general of the National Police service has visited HuercalOvera this week.

Francisco Aranda, together with chief steward of eastern Andalucia, Jose Luis CerviĂąo, met with mayor, Domingo Fernandez, to visit the proposed premises for the new National Police headquarters.

Aranda congratulated the mayor for his commitment to the project and the work he has done in finding a suitable location.

Fernandez thanked the visitors for their interest and said he hoped to make the project a reality in the very near future.

The new facility will allow for easier access for residents and for extended opening hours.

The National Police office will also be a point for the processing of identity documents for both Spanish nationals and foreigners, without the need to travel to Almeria.

Life-saving course for Mojacar group RESIDENTS learn vital skills BRAD SWIFT

By Adele Land A GROUP of Mojacar residents enjoyed learning new skills at a basic, life-saving course this week.

The course, organised by members of a community forum, included how to perform cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and how to deal with choking and drowning.

Course instructor, volunteer Beverley Price al-

so showed delegates how to place someone in the recovery position.

More courses have been scheduled over the coming weeks and more information can be found on the Facebook page, Mojacar Forum.

Attendees commented on how useful the session was and thanked Price, the organisers and Joe Beach bar for hosting the course.

Campaign of terror A YOUNG girl found herself in a terrible situation when she tried to file a lawsuit against other teenagers whom she claimed had sexually assaulted her four years ago in Almeria.

She was eventually forced to withdraw her claim after one of the youths she had accused submitted her to an intense campaign of harassment, threats and psychological pressure.

That campaign of terror reportedly lasted almost a year and now, years later the youth who initiated it has finally faced justice and been sentenced to two years and eight months in prison.

The sentence is concerned with his pressure and harassment and not with the original claims which remain in dispute.

Modelo 720 In 2016 Have you submitted your Modelo 720 yet? Do not forget that the deadline is 31st March. Residents of Spain need to submit Form 720 each year, listing their overseas assets where applicable. If you have previously submitted a form, you only need to declare assets if they have grown a certain amount or you have sold or closed them.

Besides confirming what you have to declare this year, this is also a good time to consider whether you are holding your assets in the most tax-efficient vehicles for Spain. If you have investments that were set up with UK taxation in mind, you may be paying more tax in Spain than you need be.

Summary of the rules There are three reporting categories, based on bank accounts, investments and immovable property. You have to report all assets in a particular category if the value of your total assets in it amounts to over €50,000. This only applies to assets located outside Spain.

By Gerald Turner, Partner, Blevins Franks In general, you are obliged to report assets if you are the owner, settlor of a trust, beneficiary from a trust, authorised signatory, or have the authority to dispose of the asset.

This includes assets held by companies, trusts etc.

You need to report even if your personal share of assets is less than €50,000. With joint assets, each owner needs to declare the full value

(not pro-rated) and indicate their percentage of ownership.

In most cases, assets are valued using the wealth tax rules as at 31st December. For assets held within financial institutions (eg bank accounts), you also need to declare the average balance over the last three months of the year.

2016 declaration For your 2016 Modelo 720, you declare the assets owned as at the end of 2015.

If you have already submitted Form 720 in the past few years, you only need to report again if: • The value of an existing asset grew by more than €20,000, or • You sold an asset/closed an account, or • You obtained a new asset.

Penalties As a resident of Spain, you are legally obliged to correctly report all your overseas assets on Modelo 720.

There are severe penalties for failing

to do so.

We have always stressed the importance of correctly declaring your income/gains and assets in Spain on Modelo 720 and on your tax returns. With the new global automatic exchange of information between tax authorities, omissions and inaccuracies will easily be uncovered by the Spanish tax office.

Challenge to Form 720’s legality You still need to submit Form 720, even in light of the recent investigation by the European Commission (EC). This focused on the disproportionate penalties imposed for the non-submission or incorrect submission of information, and whether having no statute of limitations on submissions infringes on EU law. We still have to see how Spain responds. In the meantime, you should submit your form as required.

Many Spanish residents are paying higher taxes as a result of Form 720.

However, Spain actually remains a tax-efficient country for British retired expatriates if you take specialist advice. You may find that using other, legitimate arrangements would provide you with tax advantages you are missing out on now. Using compliant tax planning structures can save you tax and provide peace of mind. You should review your assets now to make sure they are in the best structures going forward.

One violent morning ends in prison

By Matthew Elliott A MAN has been sentenced after careering down the road in the La Canada area of Almeria, ploughing through a police checkpoint, and almost running over three police officers at four o’clock in the morning on January 10.

Waste wars in Nijar A NEW environmental campaign has begun in the Nijar area, which aims to clean up popular dumping grounds in the community. The initiative will target areas where people commonly discard rubbish and debris, and afterwards, warning signs will be erected to deter people from doing the same thing in the future.

A few months ago a pilot experience was carried out in the Las Negras area, with very good results. As a result of this positive outcome, the council has decided to extend the initiative to different points of the municipality, beginning with Aguamarga and after extending to San Jose and other areas surrounding Nijar.

There will be a specific focus on the coastal areas, and the acceleration of the project has been timed to coincide with the Easter holidays.

Council members have reported that even though Aguamarga was cleaned only a week ago, the rubbish and junk very quickly reappeared in the same place. The council hopes that the signs will make people think twice about their unsanitary and illegal behaviour.

A court has found the 29-year-old malcontent guilty of reckless endangerment and sentenced him to three years imprisonment for the crime which saw him actually speed up when confronted with the checkpoint, forcing officers to leap out of his path.

Eventually the policemen caught up with

their suspect and forced him out of the car, even then he refused to relent to the inevitable and struggled violently with his captors until they subdued him.

It was then discovered that the man was under the influence of both alcohol and illegal narcotics which had of course dramatically af-

fected his judgement. He also had a previous criminal record and clearly felt in no condition to submit to a police check in the early hours.

In addition to his jail time, the man will also pay a fine of €3 each day for eight months and will lose his driving licence for two years.

Fuengirola scouts visit their colleagues GROUP also spent time with town council

By Adele Land A SCOUT group from Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol visited Albox this week and spent time with members of the town council and their scouting colleagues from the 106 scout troup of Albox.

The Fuengirola group is one of the most diverse in the region with members from countries including, Canada, the United Kingdom, Russia, Spain and Denmark.

The Albox scout group celebrates its centenary this year and is the oldest group of its kind in Andalucia.

The Albox group will host the annual Andal uci a Scout si ngi ng f est i val as part of the centenary celebrations and some 2,000 scout s ar e expect ed t o at t end t he event.

Councillor Maura Hillen said the council would be supporting the scouts in this special event.

The Friendly City Initiative aims to improve mobility between different parts of tow n, a nd w ill be fi-

Expansion A NEW branch of bank Caja Rural de Granada has opened in Vera, forming part of a large expansion plan throughout the province.

Mayor, Feliz Lopez, welcomed the branch team saying he was proud to have this new business in town.

Back to school WORK to the Cura Valera Secondary School in HuercalOvera has been put out to tender for €3,151,783.

The work will take approximately 16 months, and will create 80 new pupil places, bringing the centre’s capacity up to 700 places.

An extension to the existing building will feature stairs and lift, office area, cafeteria, library and technology rooms.

Meanwhile, the interiors of the existing buildings will be remodelled, new sports facilities added, and a wall built in the more deteriorated parts of the school.

Photographer’s year of images WORK has been on display at official venues

By Adele Land A POPULAR local British photographer is sharing his photos in a year-round format.

Tony Unwin, famous locally for his wonderful photos of Vera Playa and surrounding areas, is in the third year of producing his exclusive calendar.

This year, he has added a twist to the colourful calendar

by inviting local businesses to sponsor each month.

Unwin told Euro Weekly News the businesses were “delighted to come on board” and the only problem was choosing which month to sponsor.

A photographer for more than 40 years, Unwin has lived in Spain with his wife Lynne for six and was inspired to make the calendar by the rich

colours and diversity of the region.

Unwin’s work has been on display at official venues in Vera and he has won prizes in local municipal photography competitions.

The first two editions of the calendar proved popular outside Almeria with examples being shipped as far afield as Australia, Zanzibar and Cuba.

Helping out the environment ALMOCITA was only one of many Almeria municipalities that celebrated Tree Day on March 19.

A crowd of people gathered at the town hall at 10am where they discussed their shared

quest to give the environment a helping hand.

Through its Facebook page, the town council urged residents to take their children and plant a tree somewhere, contributing to a greater, greener Almocita.

The Polish cooking connection

By Matthew Elliott HAVING featured widely on British television for many a decade, the famous Costa de Almeria has now starred on Polish TV and been seen by more than two million

Polish viewers from the cold landscapes of Warsaw and Krakow.

The famous cooking and tourism show Maklowicz features the aptly named Robert Maklowicz travelling the world and sampling the unique flavours of different re-

gions while taking in breathtaking scenery.

The show on Sunday March 20 saw the Cabo de Gata-Nijar natural park and the Tabernas desert make appearances to millions of Poles and to the absolute delight of the council of Almeria Province.

The council said that they are very different locations with a broad appeal which surprised the crew of the show during the days they spent shooting in the province. They were also able to sample for themselves the most outstanding products of each area.

also being investigated in connection with the crime.

The main suspect allegedly broke into the home and made off with some â‚Ź5,000 worth of jewellery despite being disturbed by the occupant of the property.

The vi ct i m t ol d pol i ce that shortly before the incident, the woman, also under suspicion, knocked on the door and m ade an excuse that she was at the wrong property.

The victim recognised the woman and confirmed her identity via photos on social media.

Guardia Civil officers were then able to locate one of the perpetrators and an arrest was made.

The man is also charged with illegal possession of a firearm after photos of him holding an air rifle were discovered on the same social media channel.

Up to 200 homes face repossession DISCUSSIONS: Pending and future projects reviewed.

Meeting in Huercal-Overa HUERCAL-OVERA Mayor Domingo Fernandez met with Public Works and Development Representative from the Junta de Andalucia regional government Joaquin Jimenez on March 22 in the town hall.

They used the opportunity to discuss several pending projects that will be carried out in the municipality thanks to the assistance of the Junta.

One of the main discus-

sion points was the Junta’s plan to construct 200 residences in the San Isidro neighbourhood. They also touched upon other future projects and infrastructures in the community.

The mayor expressed satisfaction with the meeting and emphasised that good communication between the council and the Junta is essential to improve the lives of all of the citizens of HuercalOvera.

BANK fraud allegations are now under investigation

By John Smith A TRULY alarming story has been brought to the attention of the Euro Weekly News by two of our readers in Mojacar, Almeria.

In 2006, the couple were persuaded to join a scheme which required them to pass over the deeds to their property and in return they were to receive €250,000 which would be deposited in an investment account which would generate income for them over a period of years and at the end of the agreement, they could repay the amount loaned.

Supposedly, their lump sum was guaranteed against loss or maladministration by a secure insurance policy which

would cover them in the event that the investment company entered into financial difficulty.

The deeds were passed to Landsbanki Luxembourg SA and the money was supposedly invested with a third party, Lex Life and Pension Fund, which they later discovered was a subsidiary of Landsbanki.

Landsbanki went into liquidation in 2008 and it appears that all of the so called protected funds in the Lex Life and Pension Fund had mysteriously disappeared as had the promised insurance cover.

This means that this couple, as well as others throughout Spain, Ireland and other parts of Europe, were considered to

be debtors by the liquidators of the failed group and for the past seven years, they have been threatened with having their houses repossessed.

Despite the fact that they formed a group which has commissioned lawyers to act on their behalf and despite the fact that legal advice received suggests that the whole scheme was not only unworkable but as it had not been legally approved in Spain, it was fraudulent appears to have made no difference to the liquidators.

They have just been advised that a large number of pensioner ’s properties in Almeria and Marbella are under imminent threat of repossession. So far 28 of their

members have already died since this saga began.

It does seem unusual that having lost the lump sum invested with the Landsbanki group, rather than return the deeds of the properties, the liquidators should now be attempting to seize their properties as well.

Women’s Art Show wraps up Cuevas BROUGHT colour and creativity to the town hall

By Sam Croft OVER the last few weeks, the Women’s Art Exhibition brought creativity and colour to the Social Room of the Cuevas del Almanzora Town Hall.

Council members ruled the show to be an unqualified success, owing to the high degree of participation and huge number of works of

art on display.

The exhibition was directed at all ages, and included different kinds of work, including paintings, patchwork, and ceramics.

Social Services Councillor Melchora Caparros underlined the “great quality and originality of the work in the show,” and went on to add that Cuevas is fortunate to be full of so many creative and ambitious women.

Mojacar is currently a ‘town of art’ MOJACAR has become a ‘town of art’ for the remainder of the month. Visitors to the pueblo can enjoy art exhibitions and street artists displaying their work throughout the village.

The main points of interest are the Mirador de Castillo at the top of the village, where an exhibition of ‘the history of the Indalo’ is on display, and the multi-use Artisan centre where a number of artists have their work exhibited.

A guided tour will take place every day at 12 noon and visitors are invited to participate in an art workshop by registering at the town hall.

Music and palms ON March 20, the Cuevas del Almanzora Council celebrated Palm Sunday with a concert.

Three groups performed in the event, which took place in the Sotomayor roundabout.

Councillor IndalecioModesto said he wanted to make the traditional Palm Sunday processions even better by offering up a grand musical spectacle.

Mojacar ready for the new season BUSINESS owners and council are prepared for an influx of visitors

By Adele Land MOJACAR geared-up for Easter this week with the council and private business owners pulling out all the stops to get the town ready for the influx of tourists expected this Easter period.

A series of meetings were held between the business community and Mojacar tourism department.

Tourism councillor, Emmanuel Aguero, met with the town’s hoteliers to discuss plans for the forthcoming spring and summer season.

Items on the agenda included lifeguard activity, beach and street cleaning and traffic control.

The group also discussed the suggestion of a nightly tourist tax proposed in a recent plenary meeting by opposition group Somos Mojacar.

Hotel owners and managers dismissed the proposition calling it “crazy”, adding that it would have a detrimental effect on tourism in the town.

As Easter approaches concessions have been made to the parking issue, with two plots of land behind the complex being cleared and resurfaced to take some of the overflow of vehicles from the beachfront.

Roads behind the Pueblo Indalo have also been restricted to one-way to help alleviate congestion in the residential area.

Meetings were also held with other members of the business community, including bar and restaurant owners and rental agents.

Mayor Rosa Maria Cano, presided over the meeting along with Aguero and members of the Local Police, requesting the support of the hospitality business community in adhering to the rules relating to entertainment, opening schedules and activities.

The classics never go out of style

CLASSIC CARS: Show brought people of all ages to the town.

A CLASSIC CAR show brought automobile aficionados of all ages to Campohermoso on March 20.

The event took place in the town’s exhibition centre and featured lorries, motorcycles, and cars from different time periods.

The event began at 8am and various

activities took place throughout the day.

After that the cars did the rounds, travelling throughout Campohermoso and other towns in the area, so that all of the locals could have a good gawk at the cavalcade of vehicles.

prizes were given out, ranging from best foreign car, to youngest driver and the most original vehicle.

Old town roads renewed

Nijar NGO opens its arms A YEAR ago, the NGO Almeria Acoge opened a social grocery centre in the San Isidro area of Nijar. This establishment sells staple foods such as milk, pasta, rice, and juice at 75 per cent of the normal market price, and aims to help out people in difficult economic situations.

Since its opening, somewhere between 700 and 800 families have

utilised the centre’s resources, and on average 12 to 14 families go there every day.

The majority of the people who attend the centre are immigrants, but it also caters to various unemployed and retired Spaniards.

The centre also has a classroom with books and a laptop and even offers classes so that foreign students can learn Spanish.

Fair and square HISTORY of town being maintained

By Antonio Melgar CONSTRUCTION work on a new square has begun in the San Isidro neighbourhood of Huercal-Overa. Mayor Domingo Fernandez and several coun-

cillors visited the site in order to check on the progress of the work.

Fernandez said that “thanks to this project we are keeping part of our history as the new square is being built around an

old laundry area.” Additionally, the square will have green areas which may be decorated with farming tools so the visitors and the residents can know something else about the history of Huercal-Overa.

VARIOUS streets in the old town of Cuevas del Almanzora are being remodelled thanks to a new Infrastructure Plan launched by the Almeria Provincial Council.

The work has consisted of maintenance and repaving. As of now, Calles Esperanza, Barrera, Plaza del Hospital, Cervantes, and San Anton are finished, with the exception of road markings.

The council has also given the existing drainage and sanitation networks in the area a touch-up, as they were outdated and in bad condition.

After the Easter processions have finished, the work will start up again, and will mainly be located in Calle Aire, Calle Entinas, Calle San Amaro, and the Cuesta de la Zorrera.

OBSERVATORY: The biggest in continental Europe.

Overwhelming interest shown ALMERIA observatory popular with the public

By Sam Croft SINCE an announcement was made a few weeks ago that the Calar Alto Observatory will now be open to the public, the facility has received an ‘overwhelming’ level of interest.

The observatory, which is the biggest in continental Europe, is located on the Calar Alto Mountain, the highest mountain in the province. It was previously open to scientists and professionals but now all space-lovers will be able to visit.

Javier Sanchez, one of the managers of Azimuth, the company in charge of the management of activities in the observatory, said that within a

few days the observatory received around 800 emails. Additional interest was shown in the form of numerous whatsapp messages and phone calls.

Due to the huge volume of interest, there will have to be a waiting list.

Azimuth hopes to be launching the first activities by the end of March or the beginning of April.

Sanchez said that the biggest draw for many was the opportunity to use a 1.23 metre telescope housed in the observatory. Visitors even have the option of spending the night in the Calar Alto, although there is limited space as there are only nine bungalows available.

It was definitely a weekend packed with music as later the same evening, singer, Jill Farmiloe, entertained diners at Dolce Vita in Mojacar, the crowd enjoyed an eclectic playlist of tunes from artists including Stevie Wonder, Carole King, David Essex and many more, another day and night to remember on the Mojacar music scene.

A SPLUTTERING Euro Weekly News van spat me out amid the stark void of the sierras, so clueless as to where I was that they might have blindfolded me on the way. Stranded for 24 hours with no money or phone, I was tasked with finding charity by throwing myself at its mercy. It had all seemed more romantic indoors.

Throwing caution to the wind, I flung on my hood and made haste for the whitewashed village nestled in the hillside. I crept around the silent streets like a sly drifter and was barked at ferociously by a salivating sentry, a piercing silence in between its roars.

Ignoring the buck toothed grin of an extra from Deliverance I dived under a thick avocado tree. To hell with orders I thought, I’ll see out my sentence in blissful ignorance under the shade. Just as my mind slipped briefly into that narcotic state of pseudo sleep, thick raindrops fell, and the skies thundered. I needed help.

The undercover story was that my imaginary Spanish girlfriend, Maria, had thrown me out of the car after a heated battle of wills. I stuck to the tale because it was infinitely more plausible than the dawning reality that my boss was discreetly trying to assassinate another wayward writer.

In the British quarters, by which I mean the only bar open, my story was met with wild laughter and disbelief but I wasn’t to worry, the party here would go on till the wee hours and we’d find a room for you. There were stories of home tinged with regret.

Spare a shilling?

Later I was to reflect that human kindness is still alive and well and to this day I am indebted to all those who lent a helping hand. In this dog eat dog world it’s so easy to believe we live in, they had no cause to look twice. In reply I can only perform my own small acts of charity in the future, and certainly mean to do so at the earliest opportunity.

When you’re alone, you will find kindness in the simplest of actions.

The thrusting open of a car door, the scribbling of a telephone number, can raise your spirits so intensely you could smother a donkey in kisses and pledge to become a kind of karmic knight sowing sunshine and righting wrongs.

I learned that life is about being open. If I had my phone handy, doubtless I would have either buried my head in it, or simply called a friend.

Here, faced with the choice of asking for help or freezing to death, I found that a friendly smile opened doors another me would never have knocked.

To be sure I was soaked, shaken and exhausted, but the experience of losing your ego, at the mercy of mankind rather than in the comfort of bed, is something I wouldn’t change for the world.

Thanks to this, the company expects profits to rise slightly during 2016, and it will be resuming the payment of dividends to shareholders.

Investors flee sterling FOLLOWING the news that investors were withdrawing funds from Spain due to the uncertainty over the forming of the next government, it is the United Kingdom’s turn to suffer from investor jitters, with over £6 billion (€7.8 billion) leaving British shores in January alone, according to the Bank of England.

Stock Exchanges to merge POSSIBLY with an eye to the Brexit, the London Stock Exchange (LSE) has announced that it wishes to merge with its German equivalent, the Deutsche Boerse (DB) in what is described as a ‘merger of equals’, with a combined worth in the region of €27 billion.

The shares in the new company will be split on an almost equal basis with 45.6 per cent going to LSE shareholders and the balance to DB shareholders.

One of the main reasons given for the merger is the operating savings they expect to make of €450 million a year, which represents about 20 per cent of their joint operating costs.

LSE will be bringing the Milan Borsa Italiana to the ‘party’, which means the new group believes that the “combination of London, Frankfurt and Milan will provide a platform for financing and promoting economic growth of European companies, and be an attractive offering to Asian and US companies looking to access investors and capital.”

THE Volkswagen group has announce d t h a t i t s su b s id ia ry in Spain, SEAT, posted a €6 million profit for 2015, compared to a 2014 loss of €66 million, and was its first profit in seven years.

Sales increased by 11 per cent to €8.3 billion so the percentage of profit is tiny, but this is one piece of good news for the company that has been transformed, following the revelation that the parent had been responsible for misrepresenting diesel emission figures across a whole range of models.

“SEAT’s progress in 2015 was twofold, not only did we obtain a positive result for the first time s ince 2 0 0 8 , b u t we a c h ie v ed it during a year of major challenges.

We are i m p l e m e n t i n g th e rig h t strategy that enables us to face the challenge of sustaining long-term profitability with optimism.”

“We h a v e a b r i l l i a n t fu tu re ahead of us thanks to the launch of new products and the integration

of new technologies in both the field of mobility as well as connect i vi t y,” sai d Luca de Meo, President of the SEAT Executive Committee, during the presentation of the 2015 annual results.

The growth in sales for the third year i n a r ow, exceedi ng t he 400,000 vehicle barrier in a single year, was the result of recuperation in southern European markets, growth in Germany, SEAT’s main market, and the brand’s success in Mexico.

The increase in sales and production enabled the creation of 350 new j obs i n t he ent i r e SEAT Group, including 100 engineers at the Technical Centre, which celebrated its 40th anniversary last year, as well as 48 young graduates of the company’s vocational training school.

SEAT expect s t o i ncr ease i t s growth in 2016 thanks in part to launch of the Ateca, the brand’s first SUV, which was created at the SEAT Technical Centre and will be available this summer.

George Osborne presents March budget

By John Smith DURING a 62-minute speech on March 16 in his third budget in 12 months, Chancellor Osborne pleased a few people and irritated a few, but didn’t really come up with anything extraordinary.

Trying to be upbeat, he had to admit that his earlier growth forecasts were not going to be met, and therefore were amended to 2 per cent for 2016, down from 2.4 per cent, with slightly better but still reduced growth forecasts for the following years.

Mr Osborne was still confident that the UK forecast was stronger than for any other major western economy.

As was to be expected, he also reminded everyone that the Brexit, if it went ahead, could affect his financial forecasts, but he didn’t play that card too often or too strongly.

He sees this as a budget for the young and for the future, as there will be a tax imposed on sugary drinks by 2018 and a portion of the funds collected (as-

Keeping with children in particular he has found funds to allow for all schools to become

academies by 2022, and there is some suggestion that the school day should increase nationwide by an hour.

For those trying to get onto the property ladder, those under 40 by April 2017 will be able to

save money in a ‘Lifetime ISA’ so that if they save up £4,000 per annum, the government will contribute 25 per cent extra to the savings. All of this will be tax free and will be operable until the saver reaches 50.

The annual ISA limit for regular ISAs is to rise from £15,000 to £20,000, which will please many although with such low interest rates, ISAs whilst safe are not terribly profitable.

The personal tax allowance is to rise to £11,000 in April 2016 and £11,500 in April 2017, which is worth in the region of £3.50 per week, but the higher rate threshold will increase to £43,000 this year and £45,000 next year, which did not impress those listening on the opposition bench.

All alcoholic drink duty will continue to be frozen as will fuel tax, but cigarettes will increase in price by inflation plus 2 per cent.

There is to be a further increase in insurance premium tax which will hurt motorists and others, as it is to be raised by 0.5 per cent to 10 per cent on all insurance except life insurance.

This extra levy will be used on flood defences in vulnerable areas.

Inflation is forecast to remain low, spending cuts will continue and more money will be spent on capital projects such as railway infrastructure, which will help to see the creation of a further 1,000,000 jobs by 2020.

Debt targets are going to be missed and borrowing will continue to rise in the foreseeable future.

One possibly unexpected bone of contention was the fact that he had done nothing to remove the 5 per cent vat on women’s sanitary products, which was heavily criticised by his own back benchers who object to the fact that the tax is effectively imposed by Brussels.

Finally, there was considerable criticism from the Labour party about the cuts in the proposed increase in Personal Independence Payments (PIP) to the disabled. This decision led to Jeremy Corbyn accusing the Chancellor of ‘declaring war on the disabled’, which he naturally denied.

Chinese group not disenchanted with FIFA DESPITE ongoing scandals, the Wanda Group has signed a deal to cover 2018 until 2030

By John Smith NEW FIFA president Gianni Infantino must be absolutely delighted that his team has managed to attract their first major Chinese sponsor, the Wanda Group, which has signed a deal to cover 2018 until 2030.

Although the value of the deal has not been revealed it is rumoured to be one of the biggest in FIFA history, supposedly topping the contributions received individually from Adidas, Coca-Cola, Gazprom, Hyundai and Visa, who spent over €150 million with FIFA in 2015.

Chinese firms have been involved with minor sponsorship in the past but this investment from Wanda, which is the largest private company in China operating in most areas of entertainment and retail sales including sports, is certainly a real feather in the cap for FIFA. The fact that the contracts for both Russia and Qatar to host the 2018 and 2022 finals respectively have been the cause of considerable controversy doesn’t seem to have put off Chairman Wang Jianlin, who has a stake in Atletico Madrid and

China is an increasingly important market for soccer and players such as Didier Drogba, Ramires and Gervinho have been lured to that country by promises of high salaries

as they reach the twilight of their careers.

The Chinese love to bet and soccer has become so important that there are even accusations of match fixing in the English leagues as well as in other European countries.

Speaking at the announcement of

the sponsorship deal, Mr Infantino said: “We are pleased to welcome the Wanda Group to FIFA. A company that has a long affiliation with football has been an active supporter of the game for many years and shares our enthusiasm to develop and strengthen football.

“As FIFA President, I am committed to providing stronger support for football development to our member associations, and I believe that the relationship with Wanda will support us to continue the ongoing development and growth of the game in China and all over the world.”

In response, Mr Wang said “We are highly motivated to promote football across the country and to inspire a new generation of youngsters. The Chinese government is committed to this development and as a company we strongly support these efforts. In order to professionally grow the existing grassroots movement into a sustainable and well managed sport, we are delighted to tap into the vast experience of the most competent advisor – FIFA.” With all of this activity and the fact that China was renowned for building football stadiums all over Africa in the 1970s, perhaps this enormous investment from the Wanda Group will be repaid with the finals being awarded to China before the sponsorship agreement expires.

WHEN are our pussyfooting politicians going to realise that there is only one solution to the ‘refugee’ problem? They have to annihilate the reason for them all coming here in the first place. They must completely destroy Daesh.

Their latest attempt at a solution is a sick joke. This week’s meeting of European leaders should have been to form a war cabinet.

So what do they do instead? Decide to give billions of euros to Turkey, promising its 68 million mainly Muslim residents a fast track into the EU if they take them all back! This to a country that is no more European than the Peruvian Incas and whose alien culture, unleashed without restriction on to our societies, would be the final nail in the coffin of Western ideals and democracy as we know it.

And the biggest laugh of all? Every single one of these immigrants is entitled to legal representation to decide whether they should be made to leave or not! ‘Uman

rights lawyers and judges are rubbing their hands and packing their bags as we speak, en route to the Greek islands for a working holiday that will take years, and who’s go-

ing to foot their undoubtedly exorbitant fees? I don’t really have to insult your intelligence do I? It’s all a very expensive joke, perpetrated by politicians with no more courage than the Lion of Oz. Well, I’ll tell you if we don’t take the bull by the horns and enter into a full, no holds barred war against these animals, we are all finished. We need a European army of at least a half a million troops, kitted out with all the modern hardware necessary to complete the job. There really is no other way.

Despite my earlier misgivings, recent events have absolutely convinced me, if we want to retain any national identity and indeed our sanity, we simply have to opt out of Europe. Quite frankly, when the leader of our nation has to go cap in hand to Brussels to plead for the right to lift the tax on tampons, the game, in my opinion, is well and truly up!

THE BBC is bringing back classic sitcoms including Steptoe and Son, Til Death Do Us Part and Hancock’s Half Hour by remaking lost episodes for BBC Four. And if you wanted to see a young Hyacinth Bucket on screen, you’re in luck.

It’s almost sit on a Brit time

Expat hypocrisy I CAN see that lots of expats are up in arms about Spain’s bullfighting tradition and I am glad that animal welfare is finally receiving the attention it deserves.

However, I’m curious as to whether many expats here actually walk the walk or are just squeamish about a practice which is unfamiliar to them.

Let’s be frank for a second, anyone who complains about bull-

It is going to be a nail-biting finish, and a few sleepless nights for the expats before June 23.

YEP, the summer months are fast approaching and thoughts turn to the lazy days spent at the beach.

There’s nothing better than ensconcing down on hot days with all the compulsory paraphernalia.

In my case, book, newspaper, crossword puzzle, cool bag containing a beer or two, water, and food. Swimming, strolling up and down the seashore having a dose of shut eye after lunch, perfect.

Then, what happens: “It’s let’s sit on a Brit time!”

It seems to be a national pastime of every other nation on earth to want to get near or actually sit on Brits when you are on the beach. Regardless of there being enough room to sit, the Chinese population have to take cover under your parasol. My wife found herself one day actually touching one lady, after she plonked herself down. She almost bit a piece of her sandwich, she was so close.

The Spanish are excellent at it but the Germans, Russians and Italians get just as lonely and need to feel close. However, the world leaders in this field are undoubtedly the Bulgarians. Experts to a man.

Having spent a holiday there, I can vouch for that. Arriving there well in to the early hours we decided the beach and rest was the place the following day. We hired beds and parasol and I was out for the count lying on my stomach.

When I woke, a lady’s bum was almost touching my forehead as she was bending down and her family were all under our parasol eating crisps. We still giggle about that to this day.

How will the UK survive outside the EU? Clearly Obama has now put a fly in the ointment and whatever special relationship was said to be between us and the USA has just gone out the window.

As you say, our old trading partners in the Commonwealth have moved on and found new suppliers and markets, so the only choice is to become even less significant in the world and face extinction as the Roman Empire did, by looking inwards and not outwards.

At the end of the day it is an island in the middle of nowhere if it does leave. Sorry but for once I think you’re wrong, and who cares how many more Muslims arrive, you and I are not there, and as long as they are not extremists that should be ok, it’s the fundamentalist nutters you need to worry about!

This is because meat eating has become such a huge global industry that animals are essentially products on a factory line, living short, miserable lives with a brutal death awaiting them. We have become alienated from that process and no longer see the misery and death before it reaches our plate.

If the UK had a good deal, why did Cameron need to go and get a better deal before the referendum, and did he get a better deal?

The UK does more trade outside the Eurozone than in, that’s a fact.

Germany trades more BMWs, Mercedes and Audis with the UK than the rest of the other 27 members put together, that’s a fact.

Does anyone really think Germany will put a 20 per cent trade tariff on their goods to us? Never.

The UK pays in much more than the benefits it gets out, so I think it is now time to leave, and concentrate on new and better trade deals

I WOULD like to express my gratitude to David the Dogman for his article on the dangers of chocolate to dogs. As a proud Finn, living in Fuengirola for many years, I have my lovely Finnish Spitz Oskari constantly by my side. Indeed I believe he has saved my life many times, whether I know it or not.

Last September I unwittingly left some chocolate lying around my home (I have a weakness for dark chocolate and vodka), and poor Oskari of course devoured some.

Needless to say he became frighteningly ill and I was lucky that, firstly, he only ate very little, and secondly that my ex-wife Johanna noticed his discomfort very quickly and immediately rushed him to the vet.

Fortunately he was fine but it was a terrible scare and I wish I had read an article like yours before! I hope all the dog lovers out there take careful note!

THE importance of ensuring that the information relating to your driving licence is correct has been highlighted recently in the case of a former resident of Elche in Alicante Province, who discovered that he had been clocking up traffic fines without receiving notifications.

The problem came to light when the treasury seized his bank account, prompting an investigation as to why, which resulted in the 52 outstanding traffic tickets, valued at almost €6,000, being brought to light. The sanctions were all relating to a stretch of the A-7 motorway near Mijas in the province of Malaga, where the maximum speed limit is 80km per hour and protected by a multipoint radar system where the speed is monitored for a stretch of road, not just at the visible point of the monitoring equipment.

Diamond Lil celebrates her birthday HATS, balloons and streamers were brought out in celebration on this very Irish day Ric Polansky Ric Polansky moved to Mojacar in 1969 as a pioneer developer. He reads extensively and has travelled in South America panning gold and looking for El Dorado.

THE Irish are to be generously thanked for giving to the world another official day of drinking without major home fallout (unless you’re Irish). So it is that when St Patrick’s Day rolls around, those needing an extra day out can get lost in a bevy of venues and never be found until the next day.

One of Mojacar’s prime watering holes did just such a thing with the hats, balloons, streamers and of course the black nectar in celebration of none other than Diamond Lil herself, wife of the man who fought for the world title on four separate occasions, Arthur Danahar. Lil, of Irish decent is mother to a happy family of children, many of whom have lived in Mojacar for a good share of time and kept their original spelling of their name, Danaher.

ST PATRICK’S DAY: Chatter is easily fuelled by pints of the dark stuff. celebrations along. Diamond Lil was accompanied by her daughter Sheila and surrounded by her many fans at the Nail, getting ‘nailed.’

It was Lil’s 95th trip around the sun and she handled the occasion with grace and aplomb like she does to

everything in life. So much wisdom and sagacity is what keeps her important to the community.

It many ways too it was a celebration of daughter Sheila who has remained next to Lil since they came here some 34 years ago. The echo of

her restaurant expertise still remains part of Mojacar’s folkloric legend. She packed her venue daily with good food and a fun place to talk. To the village elders Sheila still remains a legacy in Mojacar’s mythical historical past.

could get caught up on old chat, especially the whereabouts of those not seen lately in the Nail. And the rumours of Brexit and complications flew with great confusion and only wetted people’s thirst. Chatter that is easily fuelled by dark pints disappearing in large qwafs down the neck followed by refreshing smiles (good pub grub too).

Once noticing the floor was still in the same horizontal position more Guinness would be ordered, embraced and scene repeated. Between huge gulps pre-warned of important insults needed to be hurled at late arrivals or shame doused upon those attempting to even think of leaving.

The Rusty Nail is a home atmosphere, a local where everyone knows your name and is happy to have your back amongst the herd.

Football is discussed and analysed nauseously mostly at the proprietor’s expense as it seems that his team MU, has been on a continuous slide down the tables into oblivion.

The Rusty Nail on St Patrick’s Day was business as usual with a Diamond compliment. CHEERS AGAIN!

In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I’M still in the USA and I know I have written about this place before but I have to relate a couple of things that happened to me here.

I went to see a doctor in Houston and then took a flight to Las Vegas on a small puddle jumper. That is what they call the planes that fly the short trips. I get in my seat and buckle up. I’m in the window seat. I look up and coming down the aisle is a large man - a very large man! I’m talking omg large!!

Now let me point out he is not fat. He is just a huge bloke and of course he manoeuvres into the middle seat next to me. I’m not a great chatter on a plane. I’m not interested in striking up a conversation with a complete stranger who wants to know my life story.

So as soon as I sit in my seat I make myself busy. It used to be reading all the stuff in the seat pocket, including what to do with the sick bag, but now I just put my headphones in

either to watch a film on my laptop or listen to music.

Anyway he sits down and within a few minutes he has his head back and is asleep, but he has the whole armrest and is now well into my seat too! So what do you do? Well I’m not well known for my ‘suffering in silence’ abilities, so when the cabin crew lady with the trolley asks if I want anything out comes, “yes, a bigger seat please as I’m sharing mine with him!”

He looks at me and says “what’s the matter?” I tell him he is invading my space (I’m being American – it’s what they say). There is no apology. Nothing. Just a big huffing noise and a horrified look from the air hostess.

Well, I’m not doing this PC stuff anymore.

He moves his arms so I can have my seat to myself. I really don’t get it. Why am I made to feel bad because he is a big guy?

The rest of the flight was OK but I don’t think I’m on his Christmas card list, and it was interesting to see the reaction of other people who heard what was going on. What would you have done? I’d be interested to know. Email me at mikesenker@gmail.com.

IF shoes and handbags keep the princess happy, then who am I to argue?

Colin Bird A weekly look Each week, Colin brings his slightly off-thewall view of the world to the pages of EWN in his own irreverent style.

WHAT is it they build into the doorways of shoe shops that have this instant effect on my wife?

We could be browsing shop windows in the Zenia Boulevard, or on our way to meet friends.

But even if we are running late, it’s as if my wife’s underwear is lined with iron filings and there is a whacking great magnet hidden in the doorway, because she is invariably pulled violently into the zapateria.

I am not alone in this. My friends tell me that it’s the same with their other halves, who would all willingly cross a six-lane highway in Cairo if that’s what it took to get to the shoe shop.

You rarely see one close

SHOE SHOPS: It’s as if there’s a whacking great magnet hidden in the doorway. down, and if they do, it’s because they have either banned women (unlikely), or the owners have cashed in and gone swanning off to early retirement.

I bet if you looked at all the millionaires living in The Seychelles or Grand Cayman, you would find that most of them are ex-shoe chain proprietors or manufacturers.

I have never had the courage to actually count the number of pairs of shoes/ boots/sandals/flip-flops/slippers/wellies that my wife has accumulated, but I am confi-

dent that it would provide half the population of Torrevieja with footwear.

And it’s the same with handbags. Our women folk gaze like children at Christmas time through the windows of bag shops, their eyes glaze over and as if in a trance, they are compelled to enter.

Actually it’s all quite clever, because the purchase of either of these items is a handy justification to buy the other.

“Oh look at those red court shoes, just what I’ve been looking for to go with my new red handbag.”

Ah yes I think, but you bought that handbag to go with the red sandals you bought the week before that.

But I say nothing.

If shoes and handbags keep the Princess happy, then who am I to argue?

Oh look here she comes now with another pair that has caught her fancy.

I FIND it quite strange that we have so little reaction from readers about the current state of the Spanish government and the fact that it seems impossible for any party to form a stable relationship.

We may not be able to elect the government but we have elected to live in Spain, and whatever decision is made over the next few months will have an ongoing effect on the lives of each and every expatriate living here.

As has been reported in our finance pages, foreign investment is flowing out of Spain at a rate of knots, as there is a great deal of uncertainty about the future of the Spanish economy.

Easter thoughts WHETHER you are a Christian or not, Easter in Spain in particular cannot be ignored as it is such an important part of the Spanish psyche.

To a foreigner, not brought up with the constant recognition of the church, the sight of the military, marching alongside men dressed in what look like coloured Klu Klux Klan outfits appears to be totally at odds with the message of peace that Easter is supposed to deliver, as Christ is said to have died for mankind’s sins over 2,000 years ago.

WHERE is the proof that it works?

FOR many years various slimming groups and dietary forums deemed ‘calorie counting’ as a scientifically proven and fairly easy method for keeping your weight down.

As a personal trainer this sort of dietary information has always been incredibly important when embarking on both weight loss and weight gain programmes with new clients.

Clients at a first consultation would generally be measured and weighed to establish their goals such as ideal weight, body fat statistics etc. This of course would enable me to set up their progression sheets.

For years myself and virtually everyone else in the health industry was informed by credited dietary and governing bodies with regard to nutrition, that for a client to lose one pound they would need a deficit of 3,500 calories.

CALORIE COUNTING: No expert has been able to prove it works.

As a trainer this was a clear and simple enough way for me to explain to my clients how to calculate and effectively monitor their daily and weekly weight loss. It was simple mathematics, create a 500 calorie a day deficit towards your total 3,500 calories for the week

and bingo, you have lost one pound of unwanted weight. Well sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the truth is that no scientist or health expert has ever been able to prove this or back up the information.

Of course there are those that will continue

to use this formula in the absence of a reasonable solution, knowing what I now know, I will inform my clients that there is NO PROVEN FORMULA when it comes to weight loss, and it is wrong to misinform people that counting with food will lead to the weight loss they are aiming for. It isn’t all doom and gloom, if you are forever finding yourself in a haze of dietary advice and continuously embarking on new eating plans as tried and tested by some micro celebrity of sorts.

STOP! Clear out your cupboards and keep only unprocessed, clean foods, meat and dairy. No low fat diet food, plenty of vegetables, only wholemeal rice and pasta.

If you must eat bread cut down and eat limited wholemeal only. Make sure you have at least three meals per day. Snack only if you are hungry, and limit it to one morning and one afternoon. Have a cheat day at the weekend and get back on track on Monday.

Finally... STOP COUNTING CALORIES and ENJOY YOUR LIFE.

Blood test possibility RESEARCHERS believe that one day an experimental blood test may be able to detect a range of diseases including cancer and multiple sclerosis (MS).

The study is still in its early stages but researchers believe it opens up vast possibilities and could offer ‘huge potential’, however they admit it is still far from clinical use.

So far, the method has been tested on 320 patients and controls, and has shown success in finding diseases such as pancreatic cancer, diabetes, traumatic brain injury and multiple sclerosis.

Scientists have known for some time that dying cells release fragmented DNA into the circulating blood.

When cells die, it can mean a disease is just beginning to take hold, and the researchers are now looking at new methods in which they can use this knowledge to identify diseases from a blood test.

In Spain, it affects around a million people but it is believed around 500,000 suffer unknowingly, making it known as the silent disease.

Glaucoma is an eye disease whose main characteristic is the loss of vision due to progressive damage that occurs to the optic nerve.

Music, dancing and entertainment kept the crowds amused and visitors shopped ‘til they dropped at the numerous stalls.

Gifts, crafts, cakes, plants and more were offered at the stalls and nobody walked away empty handed.

During the run up to the event, local resi-

dents were invited to buy pieces of pink ribbon which, on the day, were tied together and strung for hundreds of metres along the paseo.

The annual event was held in aid of AECC cancer support charity, a national non-profit organisation with braches throughout Spain.

The amount raised from this event will be announced on the AECC Mojacar Facebook page.

Dames in Spain Woman’s Day EVERYONE enjoyed the celebration THE Dames in Spain ladies group held its International Women’s Day event at Desert Spring Golf and Country Club.

The group had a wonderful day with 70 lovely ladies attending. Thanks to Ellie and her team, the meal was excellent and everyone enjoyed celebrating this special day.

The group was joined by Mojacar mayor, Rosa Marie Cano and her assistant, Louisa. The ladies commented how happy they were that they could share this day with them.

Busy time for Mojacar RBL MEMBERS of the Mojacar Branch of the Royal British Legion enjoyed two celebratory days this week.

First was a trip to Benidorm with visits to Benidorm Palace, the chocolate factory and a shoe factory.

Then members celebrated the 90th birthday of Len Brackenbury with a special cake and toasted him with a drink.

Charities benefit a MONEY donated to favourite charities chosen by

By Adele Land A LOCAL singing group in Albox has donated more than €8,000 to local charities following its closure.

The Voices of Almanzora group disbanded after more than 10 years of entertaining people in the local area and decided to donate remaining funds to members’ chosen charities.

The group was set up in 2002 after British expatriates, Sylvia Large and her late husband, Harry, were asked to take part in a multi-cultural spring festival in Albox.

Keen singers, Sylvia and Harry got together with five like minded people and performed a few typically British songs a cappella at the festival.

Local pianist and music teacher, Trudi Louch, witnessed the performance and approached the group to offer her

services as an accompanist and musical director. The Voices of Almanzora was born.

The Voices group has played various venues over the years including, Bar Hostal Rosaleda, Chapel of the Palace of Almanzora and the church in Plaza Francisco.

Eventually the choir grew to a 40-plus strong group which required a bigger venue and began to use the auditorium within the Pedro Gilabert museum in Arboleas.

The Voices presented many memorable shows which incorporated versions of popular musicals.

At the end of 2011, Louch moved back to the UK and the group would have folded if not for the enthusiasm and expertise of Nick Duncan, a choir member and musician who took over as musical director in 2012.

Under his direction the group

Now that the group has disbanded, the members have decided unanimously to donate all

Mystery boxes causing a stir COUNCIL denounced to Guardia Civil

By Adele Land POLITICAL opposition group, Partido Popular (PP), in Albox, has accused the governing socialist (PSOE) council of hiding documents and has reported the matter to the Guardia Civil.

Days after her tenure as mayor began, Sonia Cerdan came under fire from the opposition after file boxes were seen being removed from the council offices.

According to the PP, former mayor, Rogelio Mena, was caught red-handed loading the boxes into his official car and taking them to the PSOE headquarters in the town.

PP spokesman, Juan Pedro Perez, said he was “alarmed” by what he called a “brazen act,” adding that the removal of the documents was illegal.

Perez went on to say that he had denounced the council to

the Guardia Civil and he demanded that Cerdan explain the matter to the people of the town.

Cerdan dismissed the accusations saying she was not aware of the contents of the boxes, but had been assured by Mena that they were of a personal nature, including press photographs and newspaper clippings from his time as mayor.

She insisted that there was no subterfuge in the removal of the boxes, adding that uniformed municipal staff and the head of the Local Police helped in the move.

Cerdan called the accusations “baseless and malicious” and confirmed that the boxes had been returned to the council offices.

The mayor finished by saying the PP had “crossed the line” by alleging that the chief of police had violated the law.

Helping out the children THE El Saliente association has opened up pre-school enrolment for children from families living in poverty.

The group, which provides education to disabled and disadvantaged people runs a number of nursery schools for children from impoverished families including centres in Albox and Arboleas.

Although attendance at school is not mandatory until age six, the centres offer assistance to families who struggle with the costs of childcare and provide a place for young children to be looked after while parents go out to work.

The centres provide a toy library, multi-lingual staff and a meal for each child.

President, Matias Garcia, said the early years are important for a child’s development, adding some 50 families have benefited from the facility in the last two years.

Enrolment is until April 30 with 785 places available.

Negotiations will continue A BUSINESS association has urged Albox Council to redevelop a disused building into a commercial centre.

Members of the association of businessmen and professionals of Albox (AEPA) met with the town council to discuss the project which the group says will turn the town into a viable commercial hub for the Almanzora area.

The group is also running a survey of residents and business owners to gauge the overall interest in such a facility.

The disused premises, located in the Plaza de Abastos, is a building of some historical interest.

A jubilee year THE Vatican has officially deemed 2016 a ‘jubilee year’ for the Virgen del Saliente shrine in Albox.

The celebration coincides with the shrine’s 300-year anniversary and will begin on September 8 this year, ending on the same date in 2017.

Property wealth report IT is predicted that Spain will see growth in the next 10 years

By Emily Chettle A NEW property wealth report has been released and interesting stats reveal that the super wealthy, people with more €27.6 million, will increase their property buying habits in the next 10 years with Spain seeing growth.

The report shows that although the portfolios of these ultra-high net worth individuals are usually very diverse, real estate is their preference, with approximately 35 per cent of their fortunes invested.

Within the commercial sector, offices, hotels and shopping malls are firm favourites for investment, however residential investment is the first choice of these investors and will continue to soar over the next 10 years.

The predictions are for a 41 per cent growth at a global level with Spain seeing 14 per cent growth, which although is positive, the rate of the increase will be considerably lower than previously.

Ultra-rich investment has decreased by 3 per cent globally, while in Spain it’s a fall of 14 per cent. The fall has been affected by global economic uncertainty and falls in oil prices.

We have been waiting for almost a decade for this news, but house prices have now turned a very important corner, it’s the first time Spanish house prices have increased since 2007.

The news is as important for buyers as it is for sellers, buyers have more confi-

For those of you looking to sell, it makes it easier if prices are rising in your re-

gion and helps you sell your property closer to the asking price.

Although the average price of property in Spain has increased for the first time in a long time, there

are variables in price rises per region throughout Spain.

For example on the Costas, the highest price increases are in the Balearics Islands Mallorca and Ibiza, Malaga on the Costa del Sol and Alicante, but in a few regions prices have dropped, such as Almeria and Murcia.

Buyers now can’t lose, prices will never be as low as they are today, prices are at rock-bottom, between 3348 per cent below 2007 prices.

Buyers will now benefit from an immediate increase in the value of their property, which is forecast to increase by an average of 6 per cent by the end of 2016.

Compare this to leaving

Talking about property investors, they are flocking to Spain. My investment department is seeing an increase in business from the big international funds who we are advising on multimillion euro property investments.

So what does this all mean to the average owner of a property in Spain looking to sell this year? Well, buyers confidence in buying property in Spain is at an all time high, with foreign buyers buying a big percentage of properties on the Costas and Balearics.

Therefore regardless of where you live, if you are looking to sell and want the best price you must make sure your home is in good condition, as good as, if not better than other similar properties in your area.

BOUGAINVILLEAS are one of the most popular climbers in Mediterranean gardens. They can be grown against walls, on

fences, over pergolas, to cover dead trees and even cascading down banks.

A fully grown plant will give a fantastic display of colour over many months from early summer to January when they are normally pruned.

They come in many colours and can become very impressive specimens if allowed to grow taller year after year.

The colour is produced by coloured bracts. The actual flower is the long thin white growth inside the bract.

There are many varieties and cross pollinations of bougainvilleas. Garden centres often stock dwarf, variegated and mixed colours. Our advice is to try growing one or two and if they grow well, intro-

duce the more delicate varieties. If in doubt protect plants with a frost and wind protective sheet from November to March.

Bougainvilleas are best in a rich open-structured soil. They grow well when planted adjacent to a path or terrace where the roots can search for retained water underneath, and are also kept cool in the hot summer months. They find it difficult to get going in heavy clay or if planted unknowingly over bedrock. If after several months they show no signs of strong growth try moving them.

Purchasing Don’t buy the largest plant you see. It has probably been over forced in hot house conditions. You are better to buy a

one and a half metre high plant with a good root system and well-shaped branches.

Season to plant Preferably in the autumn or spring in coastal areas. But in inland valleys where there is a chance of frost or cold burning winds wait until Spring.

Planting Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and fill with a two to one compost/soil mix.

Before planting fill with water and allow it to drain off.

whole path through a garden using rocks. Or if you have a fishpond, you can use them to create a lovely waterfall.

Not so ambitious? Just make a little Inukshuk. An Inukshuk is a manmade landmark typical among the Inuits of North America.

EASTER is here, which means that palm season is upon us. But there’s no reason that you can’t keep a palm tree all-year round.

Palms are one of the easiest plants to take care of, and they can be a wonderful way to bring a bit of tropical warmth into your home.

They come in numerous sizes, from the behemoth specimens that can be seen scattered throughout the south of Spain, to tiny tabletop examples. Some palms are small enough to be kept on a table while larger ones may require floor planters.

Palms prefer bright natural light, so it is better to put them near a window. If they are placed in dimly lit nooks or crannies, their leaves will begin to wilt and

But... just wait until your litter of 12 is ready to go to their new homes, watch those people back out with excuses such as ‘the children are too young, the children are too old now to be bothered caring for a dog, we are going to have a baby, the house is too small, we are moving, the carpet is too new, grandma doesn’t like dogs, the old dog hasn’t died yet, it might not get along with our cat’. The list goes on and on.

LAYLA: Loves having company and positions herself at the centre of the action.

PHILIPPA lives deep in the campo in Loja, Granada. She loves living in Spain with her family of pets which includes several donkeys, three dogs and three cats. Pet care with multiple pets has been a challenge for Philippa until recently.

Up until last year Philippa found it difficult to go on holiday or visit family in England, because it wouldn’t be fair to rely on neighbours for more than a few days to care for all her animals. Now she uses HouseSitMatch to find housesitters online and Layla, her oldest cat, is always first in line to get to know them.

Layla has lived with Philippa ever since she first moved to Loja. She is a very friendly soul and always curious, keen to be involved in all activities.

Eric the latest house-sitter, who lived with Layla and the others for a total of six weeks this winter, found she would position herself at the centre of the action waiting for a cuddle when he was unpacking shopping, or making dinner or just pottering about the garden. She loves company.

By Matthew Elliott LUCKY attendees at the 86th International Geneva Motor Show caught a glimpse of the new Aston Martin release the DB11, which has been launched under the luxury British manufacturer’s ‘Second Century’ plan.

The new model, described as an ‘authentic, dynamic, sporting GT in the finest Aston Martin tradition’, is powered by a 5.2 litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine, and features pioneering aerodynamics and an outstanding design.

A lighter aluminium structure allows the DB11 to be more powerful and efficient than any other DB model, and is considered the firm’s most important new introduction to the luxury market in more than a decade.

Chief Executive Officer, Dr Andy Palmer said: “DB11 is the absolute embodiment of what an Aston Martin should be, and we have worked tireless-

Daley and McCann auction their TV motors NEXT month sees TV’s Minder fans being given a chance to own a piece of motoring history with Arthur Daley’s Daimler Sovereign and Terry McCann’s Ford Capri to go under the hammer.

The completion was played on a round robin basis with four groups of eight teams. Each team played seven matches over the weekend and the winners of each group played in the semi-finals with the winners of those matches playing in the final.

Each match was over seven ends and played against a timer.

The winners of each group were Brian Firth and Sandra Marriott from Cabrera LBC, John and Sue Sephton also from Cabrera LBC, Keith and Linda Lester from Indalo BC and Austin Crilly from Almeria BC and Doreen Hall from Indalo BC. Badgers Golf Society ON a beautiful Wednesday morning on March 16 at Valle del Este, 28 players turned out to compete for the prizes. It was in fact the closest finish seen this season with the first three places going to a ‘count back.’

Once again the lady Badgers took their fair share of the spoils with Steph Glynn coming in first ahead of Seamus Corbett and Ken Dawkins coming in a creditable third. The male Badgers are becoming very worried about the female dominance and may ask for a sample to be tested should these results continue. Only joking girls.

Brian and Sandra were holding three on the seventh end to win, but Austin with his last bowl had an outrageous wick off another wood to land on the jack and win the final. What a match.

Austin had recently left Indalo BC to join Almeria BC, so it was lovely to see him playing with an Indalo member showing the camaraderie between the clubs.
