Albox welcomes first lady mayor SWORN in on International Woman’s Day By Adele Land Albox marked International Women’s Day by electing its first female mayor. Sonia Cerdan was sworn in during a special plenary session earlier this week. After months of uncertainty, former mayor, Rogelio Mena, was forced to step down following ongoing corruption charges and a vote took place to elect his replacement. Cerdan, 33, made history by becoming the first female leader of the town and joined the other 21 female mayors throughout Almeria Province. The new mayor spent her first day in office as women around the world celebrated International Women’s Day on Tuesday, March 8. This wasn’t the first time Cerdan had made her mark on the town, last year she was appointed official spokesperson of political group, Socialistas Albojenses.

that she would make the town a “shining example of transparency.” Cerdan concluded by thanking the opposition and guaranteeing them her cooperation and respect. Opposition group Partido Popular (PP) has said it will oppose the decision to elect Cerdan, citing irregularities in the procedure.
