Rescue for Rojales? CHILDREN deserve a better future
By Matthew Elliott With the breaking news that brand new schools are to be built across the province, riled Rojales residents will be hoping the town finally sees a safe school for local children, after enduring years of deplorable conditions. The huts and porta-cabins that define contemporary schooling in Rojales have been denounced by outraged parents and teachers as dangerous and destructive to education. The announcement was made late on Tuesday January 26 by the President of the Valencia Region Ximo Puig, who, in true political fashion, refused to promise but rather ‘commit’ to the construction of more than 100 new schools. Parents in Rojales will be holding out hope that the massive project, with an esti-
mated budget of €60 million, will come to the town having been promised €4 million by the government in April last year. Pupils at the Principe de Espana school in Rojales are believed to face dangerous situations on a daily basis, with the school evidently among the hundreds classed as deficient and deplorable by lackadaisical authorities. The outraged AMPA parents association has been spearheading demands for a new school and serious investment in the education of
their children for years now. Education has now been put at the forefront of the regional government’s agenda, being identified as a ‘key project’ with officials yet to reveal which schools and areas will be prioritised amid a catastrophic environment for
youth education. Whether Rojales will receive the school it deserves, and how long this will take, remains to be seen. While no-one will be holding their breath, with parents and teachers united, it’s looking like change might finally be in the air.
