Hotel opening ALMERIA chef Tony Garcia and the Ambos Mundos Hotel Management company plans to reopen what used to be the Hotel Mediterraneo in the city as a four-star hotel

in the first few months of 2016.

It has been managed by Vincci Hotels since 2012 and is expected to hire 25 members of staff.

Robber detained A MAN, 48, was arrested at Almeria fishing port for allegedly stealing €60 from a bar.

The National Police were informed that a robbery was taking place at the west quay and searched the area. They found the man hiding under some fishing nets holding a screwdriver. He had several prior arrests for similar crimes.

Minute’s silence for victims of terrorist FOLLOWED by a round of applause for the victims A MINUTE’S silence was held at the Government Sub-Delegation in Almeria in honour of the two National Police officers killed in Afghanistan.

Jorge Garcia Tudela and Isidro Gabino Sanmartin died in a terrorist attack perpetrated at the Spanish Embassy in Kabul where they were working.

A minute’s silence was also held outside the Junta de Andalucia Delegation and outside Almeria City Hall.

The Mayor, Ramon Fernandez-Pacheco, led the minute’s silence accompanied by local councillors, as well as other local authorities, including two members of the National Pact Against Jihadist Terrorism. The silence was followed by a round of applause for the victims and their relatives.

The mayor said that all parties must stand united against terrorism to defend democracy, civil rights and freedom. He also congratulated the Security Forces on the work they do defending the country, democracy and freedom.

By John Smith THE news that women were to be allowed to stand for election and to vote in the Saudi Arabian municipal elections saw yet another breakthrough for women’s rights, even though they were required to address audiences from behind a screen, or employ a man to make the speech on their behalf.

Although the Isle of Man granted limited voting rights to women in 1881, New Zealand was the first ‘country’ to grant rights to women in 1893 and today, the only country in the world which does not allow women to vote is the Vatican City, although that is explained by the fact that only Cardinals can vote there and they are all men.

Despite the well publicised release of the film Suffragette this year and the well documented history of the fight for votes by women in the UK, it was only in 1928 that full emancipation was

€200,000 made from drugs crimes OPERATIONS against drugs in Almeria in 2014 brought the State more than €200,000.

This is on top of busting criminal gangs and seizing drugs.

A report regarding the activity of the fund from assets seized from illegal drugs trafficking and related crimes from the National Drugs Plan, published by the Interior Minister,

shows that throughout Spain, €17 million was obtained last year from operations against drugs.

The money is generated through the courts from seizing

cash and from the interests made on it.

The money and other assets are not only seized by the police and Guardia Civil, but also through banks from accounts

and properties. Twenty-one vehicles and 20 boats were seized in Almeria in 2014, and other assets including jewellery, phones and other objects were later auctioned or sold.

Sold in the province THE first prize of the Spanish National Lottery was won in El Ejido. Number 71,770 had a prize of €600,000 for the lucky ticket holder. The second prize of €120,000 was won in Velez Rubio.

City crash Four injured TWO women aged 25, and two men, aged 57 and 26, were injured in Almeria when the two vehicles they were travelling in crashed in the Rambla Amatisteros.

They were all taken to Torrecardenas Hospital.

COMPLICATIONS: The gynaecologist claims she followed the correct procedure.

ALMERIA Provincial Court has acquitted a gynaecologist accused of manslaughter after the death of a woman at the Poniente Hospital in El Ejido in August 2012.

She had been sentenced for negligent manslaughter by a criminal court in Almeria in March 2014 and told to pay the fami-

ly almost €500,000 as well as a fine.

The patient was admitted when she was almost 35 weeks pregnant and the accused doctor was due to assist with the birth.

After the baby was born, there was a problem with the placenta which had attached to a previous Caesarian scar and had

to be removed manually. This caused severe haemorrhaging and she died six hours later.

The gynaecologist’s defence claimed she acted following procedure established for such cases, but the Public Prosecution and private accusation maintained that she committed severe negligence.

Underwater museum off the coast of Almeria ALMERIA has four underwater archaeological sites which are a testimony to Spain’s naval, military and financial history of the past centuries.

In the Alboran Sea, there

are pieces from almost all Mediterranean civilisations which have sailed in the area.

Since 2008, the Junta de Andalucia Council for Culture has classified four archaeo-

logical sites. They are protected areas and the items within them have been declared Assets of Cultural Interest.

They are located in Punta Entinas, Cabo de Gata, Los

Escullos and Carboneras, all within 12 nautical miles from the coast.

The authorities are constantly searching for new sites.

Road deaths increase from last year TWENTY-TWO people have lost their lives on the roads of Almeria Province so far this year, more than in the whole of last year.

According to the Almeria Traf-

fic Department, 18 people died on the roads between towns and four within towns and cities.

Fourteen per cent of their income is spent on food, 4 per cent on gas and electricity, 20 per cent on paying for housing, and 17 per cent on home maintenance, medicine, clothes and doctors’ bills.

More than half is spent on household expenses.

Soldiers donate MORE than 150 soldiers based in Almeria, most of them legionnaires, took part in a blood and plasma donation drive at the Alvarez de Sotomayor Military Base in Viator with Almeria’s Blood Transfusion Centre.

Lottery ticket sales up for annual ‘fat one’ ADVERTISING campaign accredited for rise in sales SALES of Christmas lottery tickets in Almeria have risen compared to last year.

Spain’s most awaited lottery draw, El Gordo, held every year on December 22, will have a total €2.24 billion in prize money. A single ticket could win €400,000, and the first prize is valued at €640 million.

The Territorial Delegate for State Lotteries and Betting in Almeria, Joaquin Cabrera, says that although figures won’t be released until the last day of ticket sales, there are definitely more selling, possibly because this year’s advertising campaign has been very popular. A lot of last-minute ticket sales are expected.

The most popular numbers for ticket endings are 5 and 7, and people also seek out tickets which include the number 13.

MORE men than women have attended A&E at Hospital Mediterraneo in the past year, with 52 per cent.

Of a total of 40,500 incidents, 38.1 per cent of cases seen were paediatric and 10 per cent of patients were over the age of 65.

These details, amongst others, have been recorded thanks to a system called Green Cube which allows medical histories to be recorded while patients are being seen.

Patients waited an average of 12 m i nut es t o go t hr ough t r i age at A& E, whi ch i s wi t hi n t he 25minute maximum wait which the hospital management has set for patients to be seen by a doctor.

Each person spends an average of just over an hour in A&E from when they are seen until they are released. Most of the cases (93 per cent) are minor or very minor. An average of 110 patients are treated every day.

The company Mueve-te and Nijar Town Hall have said that the race will be in Campohermoso from 4pm, when the Junior category race takes place.

The adults’ races start at 5.30pm, and there are two different distances.

Woman lived in constant fear of abuse ASSOCIATION: Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

Christmas in Mojacar with the Dames in Spain FOR 30 years Mojacar has been the base of Dames in Spain, an association composed of more than 60 local women residents, mainly of British origin.

On Tuesday December 1, the Dames in Spain gave their annual concert of traditional Christmas carols and a reading of Christmas stories at the Municipal Centro de Usos Multiples.

This well-loved event was at-

tended by the Mayor of Mojacar, Rosmari Cano, accompanied by two of her councillors, Emmanuel Aguero and Maria Luisa Perez.

As part of this Christmas celebration, there was a fundraising raffle and craft fair where you could find all kinds of handcrafted items, and delicious homemade sweets made by volunteers of the association.

The Dames in Spain association is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

The work they have been doing over the last three decades has been commendable. They have collaborated and organised many charity events to raise funds for causes like the Red Cross, the Cancer Society and the Alzheimer’s Association to name but a few.

A MAN has been sentenced by an Almeria court to 21 months in prison for repeatedly abusing his wife both physically and mentally for 10 years.

The couple had been going out for five years when they decided to live together and from then on he began to insult her and hit her on several occasions.

For 10 years he humiliated and intimidated her, even in front of their young daughter.

She suffered from posttraumatic stress and high anxiety levels, and lived in constant fear.

He will also have to do 50 days community service for calling her

21 month jail sentence for abuse up to 35 times in one month and leaving a message threatening to kill her.

He is banned from coming within 300 metres of the woman or communicating with her in eight years, as well as being banned from carrying weapons.

He must pay the legal costs, but his sentence has been suspended for five years as long as he does not approach the victim and carries out a psychological re-education course.

Drugs found hidden at the roadside

Police working for a safer Christmas

A MAN, 34, has been sentenced to three years and nine months in prison for attempting to hide 22 and a half kilos of marihuana to avoid a police checkpoint.

The events took place in January last year on the A-92N near Chirivel in the early hours of the morning. He was signalled to stop by the Guardia Civil who detected a strong smell of drugs while searching his car, although they only found traces of marihuana.

They also found three mobile phones and €1,000 in cash and suspected that he had disposed of some drugs when he saw them.

They searched the area and found them at the side of the road about four kilometres away in plastic bags hidden by a grey blanket.

In total they found 22.46 kilos of marihuana and 429 grammes of hashish ready to sell and he was charged with a crime against public health.

He agreed to the sentence and will have to pay a fine of €35,000. He has been sentenced on two previous occasions for drug related crimes and is currently serving one of those sentences.

CUEVAS DEL ALMANZORA Local Police have launched a special campaign and will increase patrolling over the Christmas period.

Until January 7, due to the increased number of people and vehicles which will be in the centre of the town, the police will direct traffic and increase foot patrols during commercial hours to make it safer for shops, so that residents and visitors can enjoy a safer experience.

The police will be stricter with illegal parking and sales, and be on the lookout for shoplifting.

They will also check the authenticity of products, focusing especially on toys. There will be more alcohol tests and stricter measures regarding opening hours, acoustic contamination, taking up space on the pavements and illegal parties.

Mystery smoke RESIDENTS in the Regiones district near the San Jose and Santa Adela Hospital in Almeria have reportedly questioned the origin of a column of black smoke coming from the hospital.

Local App ALMERIA City Hall has dealt with 1,114 matters registered by residents via the Almeria Sostenible mobile phone App which was launched last year.

There were 1,648 matters registered until November but 534 were rejected.

Happy 70th, Mick MICHAEL ROONEY celebrated his 70th birthday in style at Camping Los Gallardos on Saturday.

Mick is the husband of a longstanding and well-known member of the Euro Weekly News (EWN) team, although she has now retired, Fiona.

To celebrate, his guests had a carvery dinner, and then danced all night to the vocal talents of Erroll and Carlene.

Everyone agreed that they had a great night.

FOUR men have been arrested in Almeria after they allegedly assaulted several police officers in the hotel where they were staying.

On Sunday December 13, the National Police were called by the staff of the Hotel Barcelo Cabo de Gata, who reported that a group of men were causing destruction in one of the hotel rooms.

The men were members of the film crew of Assassin’s Creed, which recently finished shooting

in Almeria, and they were celebrating the end of the film’s production. Over the course of the night, the men allegedly became increasingly noisy and destructive, until the police were called.

When the police went to the room one of them was attacked, and had to call for back-up.

More officers went to the hotel and they were also attacked, with four officers ultimately suffering injuries.

Four men were arrested for assault. Two of them were Lithuanian, one was English, and the other was Spanish.

Two-day expedition to the top of Spain A GROUP of 10 people from the Adraventura Club climbed the highest peak on the Iberian Peninsula, the Mulhacen in Granada, almost 3,000 metres above sea level.

The aim of the adventure was to join

the international Climate March movement, which coincided with the summit in Paris. One of the areas which is most being affected by climate change in Spain is the Sierra Nevada, as the mountains once had snow all year round.

They went on a two-day expedition to show that the people of Almeria are interested in climate-related decisions which are taken in the world and want to ensure a firm commitment to actions against climate change.

Warning Ahead Of Common Reporting Standard Starting in January 2016, more than 90 jurisdictions will begin to collect the financial details of investments and assets owned by non-residents.

The data will then be shared with the owner’s country of residence. This new automatic global exchange of information, under the Common Reporting Standard (CRS), will provide information that the tax authorities in participating countries, including Spain and the UK, can use to catch tax evaders.

In the UK, the Chancellor announced in his Autumn Statement that HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) will receive £800m to fund additional work to tackle evasion and non-compliance by 2020-21. David Gauke, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, then launched a press campaign warning those hiding assets offshore that “the net is closing in on offshore tax evaders” and “come to us before we come to you.”

This affects everyone who has financial assets outside their country of residence, such as bank accounts and investments, property, trusts, etc, including those who have received an offshore account as an inheritance.

Harsher UK penalties The 2015 UK Finance Act introduced a penalty of 100% of

the tax due for non-compliance involving a jurisdiction that has signed up to the CRS; this is expected to apply from April 2016.

For non-transparent jurisdictions the penalty remains 200%. There is also an aggravated penalty – “Offshore Assets Moves Penalty” – for moving hidden funds to circumvent exchange of information.

The Autumn Statement confirmed that the government will introduce a new “strict liability” criminal offence for offshore tax evasion - it will not need to prove that the taxpayer intended to evade tax, simply that they had undeclared offshore assets. There will also be tougher civil penalties for offshore tax evasion.

End of Liechtenstein Disclosure Facility The Liechtenstein Disclosure Facility opened in 2009 and allows UK residents to disclose unpaid tax liabilities under favourable conditions, such as reduced

penalties and immunity from prosecution for tax-related offences.

It is closing at the end of 2015, earlier than previously planned, ahead of the start of the Common Reporting Standard.

Technological advances To help process the vast amounts of information that will be exchanged between countries under the CRS, the UK government has invested £4m in new technology.

Part of the money has gone towards HMRC’s Connect programme that captures and connects billions of items of data around taxpayers. It allows the taxman to uncover hidden relationships between people, organisations and data.

It allows HMRC access to files held by banks and other financial institutions in British overseas territories, exposing undeclared income and gains arising from overseas assets and investments.

From 2017, it gains access to data in a further 90 countries.

HMRC has also reportedly

increased the number of staff working in its Affluent Unit by 54% in the past two years. The unit investigates taxpayers with income of over £150,000 and is alerted by a number of factors, including possession of offshore property and/or bank accounts.

Cross-border asset management and tax planning can be a minefield. You could be failing in your tax obligations, or paying more tax than necessary. Everyone needs to ensure their tax planning is legal and compliant. Note that although the first reporting under the Common Reporting Standard takes place in 2017, it reports on calendar year 2016. There are effective, compliant arrangements available in both Spain and the UK, but you should take personalised specialist advice to ensure you get it right.

Minors stole €10,000 worth of jewellery FIVE minors have been sentenced to community service for stealing €10,000 worth of jewellery from a house in La Mojonera.

Three of them broke into the house in September 2013 and the others helped sell the goods.

They used a lever to force open the door to the house, and once inside they searched for valuable goods which could easily be sold on the black market, including electronic equip-

ment and jewellery worth €10,400. They also caused damages valued at €500.

Several days later, they began to sell the items, with the help of another two minors and a man over 18. Most of the jewellery was sold in pawn shops in Roquetas de Mar. By then, Guardia Civil were investigating. When the jewellery was identified in pawn shops, it led them to the sellers and eventually to the thieves.

The ice rink will be covered and opening times are from 11am to 2pm and 4.30pm to 9.30pm.

From Monday to Thursday, it will cost €2.5 for 30 minutes skating and €4 for a whole hour.

At the weekend, the price will rise to €3.5 for half an hour and €5 for an hour. There is also a special price of €1 for 20 minutes for school groups. Skates in all sizes will be available for users at the rink. The use of gloves and warm clothes is recommended.

Keeping family baking traditions alive FRESH pasties are traditionally eaten at Christmas THE Dia de la Empanada (Pasty Day) was held in Huercal Overa.

It has been celebrated for more than 10 years by the Association of Residents of the Historical Centre in collaboration with the town hall in order to maintain one of the most traditional local sweetmeats, the almond pasty.

The money raised from the event will go to the Alzheimer’s Association and the Virgen del Rio care home.

This year, the event was held in the gastronomy class at the Plaza de Abastos, because it has all the necessary facilities to make and bake the pasties in the same place.

Locals were able to purchase the fresh pasties which are traditionally eaten at Christmas. Local women tend to gather in their homes with friends and family to prepare them and each household has its own way of making them, which is passed on from one generation to the next.

Three men die in N-340 crash THE mayor of Tabernas declared three days of mourning in the town after three people died in an accident when they were heading to a birth.

VSG, 39, from Tabernas, FCM, 21, and CJRA, 32, who were brothers-in-law and originally from Almeria but had been living in Tabernas for two years, were heading towards Torrecardenas Hospital at around 1am. The wife of one of the men had been admitted to hospital and gave birth just hours later.

The 32-year-old was driving on the N-340 when at km468 on the access bridge to Tabernas they collided with a lorry on a bend for reasons which were not known at the time of writing.

Guardia Civil are investigating and confirmed that the lorry driver tested negative for alcohol. He was uninjured in the crash. The Portuguese-registered tanker lorry was carry-

ing acid but the load was not affected.

Firefighters, Guardia Civil, paramedics and road maintenance services were present on the scene as well as doctors from Tabernas and Benahadux. However, they were only able to confirm that the men had died almost instantly.

Their bodies had to be extracted from the wrecked vehicle.

The road was closed to traffic for four-and-a-half hours.

The evidence is with an Almeria court and the mayor, Jose Diaz, reported that two of the men had three children, and that their relatives required counselling. Flags were flown at half mast for three days in the town as a show of solidarity with them.

The location where the accident occurred is considered to be a black spot, as it is a sharp bend over a riverbed which most drivers find dangerous.

Sports grants THIRTEEN sports clubs and two motorists from El Ejido received grants from the Municipal Sports Institute for the second year running. This has allowed 1,215 to become professional sportspeople.

Viator bank teller is acquitted of forgery A BANK employee from Viator accused of stealing almost €31,000 from a couple in Navarra has been acquitted in Almeria Provincial Court.

The couple reported her when they finally visited the house she had purchased for them and decided they didn’t like it.

She was accused of having got the couple to open a current account with the bank where she worked and convinced them to buy a house in Viator.

They asked her to choose one, deal with the purchase and any other payments.

They reportedly gave her money and she represented them at the signing of the contract of sales and purchase. She was accused of forging the woman’s signature on many withdrawal orders from the current account and put her bank stamp on the documents.

She claimed in court that the woman had left her with blank signed documents so that she

would not need to forge the signature. No studies were carried out by experts to determine whether or not the signatures were forged.

She took amounts ranging from €45 to €12,000, amounting to €31,000 in total.

However, the court has ruled that she did not trick the couple nor did she lie about the house or its price. All the money she used was with their consent and did not lead to any personal gains for her or any third party.

The money was used to pay expenses such as taxes, bills, furniture and others.

She was facing two years and 10 months in prison for document falsification and misappropriation, as she was accused of abusing her position and friendship with the couple.

She was also facing a fine of €12 per day for 11 months and having to pay back the money.

Socialists promise to fight climate change PLAN is to lower carbon dioxide emissions by using clean energy SOCIALIST party representative Emilio Sanchez de Amo visited the Sierra de Los Filabres area and promised that if elected, the PSOE will relaunch the fight against climate change.

He promised the Mayor of Bacares, Jose Segura, that if Pedro Sanchez wins the upcoming

General Elections, they will fight climate change, after four years during which he claimed the Partido Popular government of Mariano Rajoy has “done nothing to protect the environment”. He discussed the problems which could derive from lack of rain due to climate change in Almeria in the short and medium term.

He said as Rajoy “doesn’t believe” in climate change, he has “closed his eyes to the problems which it is already causing in the province.”

He mentioned the loss of forest areas due to lack of water, the proliferation of species such as the pine tree processionary caterpillar due to high temperatures, the presence of jellyfish on local shores or problems

Job-seekers tricked by false work offers A MAN, 33, from Roquetas de Mar was arrested by Guardia Civil on fraud charges after using details provided by people looking for work to steal money from their accounts.

In October, one of the victims reported that money had been withdrawn without his consent and told the Guardia Civil that he had given his ID card to a man several days earlier because he had promised to help him find work.

In the following days, four other people who were looking for work made similar complaints.

The Guardia Civil revealed that the man took photocopies of the documents to withdraw money from the victims’ bank accounts. He obtained €605 from five people. He was found with laminated photocopies of the victims’ ID cards, as well as five others. The investigation remains open in an attempt to locate the other victims.

A ROMANIAN man who attempted to hold up a games hall in Almeria City has been sentenced to five months in prison.

In October 2013, he and several other unidentified people decided to target the establishment when it was closed and visited the location several times to learn more about the layout and where the alarms were placed.

On October 29, at around 3pm, he arrived there, and while two others spoke to an employee to distract her, another disabled the alarms so that they could enter later. However, the stickers they had put on the alarms were detected by CCTV cameras and the National Police were alerted. They set up surveillance, but the robbery did not go ahead as planned.

However, as there was no doubt of the man’s involvement and intentions, the judge ruled that he is guilty. His fingerprint was also found at the scene. Another man has been acquitted of the crime.

THE musical show ‘La Pasion en Andalucia’ (The Suffering and Death in Andalucia) will be performed at Vera Municipal Auditorium on February 20.

The show, by singer songwriter Pascual Gonzalez and the group Cantores de Hispalis, is being represented in several parts of Andalucia and further afield. It follows the life of Jesus Christ from his birth to his Resurrection in an exclusive way, based on the Easter traditions of Andalucia.

The singers are accompanied by six professional musicians, a band, a choir, a ‘saeta’ singer and a group of actors.

One show is never identical to another as it always adds elements from each of the towns and cities where it is performed.

The presentation was held at the Terraza Carmona where Councillor for Culture Isabel de Haro thanked the San Juan Evangelista y Cristo de la Misericordia Brotherhood for bringing the production to the town.

Cycle lane A ‘Night of Light’ for Christmas shopping THE Mayor of Vicar, Antonio Bonilla, visited works being carried out on the cycle lane in Bulevar de la Paz when they were almost completed. He said that the work was an important part of plans for sustainable tourism in the area.

EVENT was held in Huercal-Overa to boost local commerce THE second ‘Noche de la Luz’ (Night of Light) was held in Huercal-Overa to boost commerce.

The Councillor for Commerce, Monica Navarro, presented the event earlier in the week with photographers from the local group CoFHo, Francis Tamayo, Salvador Gomez and Ana Maria Fernandez.

Each of the participating establishments gave their clients a poster with photos of locations in the town which have been donated by CoFHo. The photographers thanked the town hall for allowing them to take part in the event, and said that each of the members had been allowed to choose which images they wanted to include.

There are 40 photos in total by 10 photographers which were printed in high quality on varnished matte paper.

Amongst other attractions on the night, there were 5,000 candles lighting the commercial areas and lighting was dimmed so people could enjoy walking

Vandals repeatedly disturb life in Almeria ALMERIA City Hall has had to repair damages at the Gines Morata Primary School following a break-in.

The school was visited by the Education Delegate in Almeria, Francisca Lourdes Fernandez, following the at-

tack in which a window and doors were destroyed along with computer equipment, some of which was also stolen.

The equipment was due to be replaced as quickly as possible, headmistress Maria Dolores Ruiz reported, adding that they had received letters of support from other schools throughout Spain.

The City Hall has requested that the Junta de Andalucia regional government puts up higher walls around the school to prevent more robberies, following the requests of parents.

Meanwhile, in the historical centre of the city, residents complain they can’t sleep since their street, Calle Descanso, and its square, were reformed.

The square has been targeted repeatedly by vandals at night and some have had to put up with urine and excrements on their own properties, as well as youths jumping on the roof.

Charity market for Colombia A CHARITY market is being held by Manos Unidas in Almeria to raise funds for Colombia for a farming project. It will run until January 5 in Calle Navarro Rodrigo.

The delegate for Manos Unidas in Almeria said that this year there are items created by eight volunteers in the sewing workshops, including cushions, aprons, tablecloths and other gift items.

In addition, there will be Fair Trade products and books donated by Unicaja and the

Almeria Studies Institute.

So far it has reportedly been very successful and Manos Unidas said funds will go towards teaching people in Bolivar, Colombia, sustainable farming to feed themselves and sell their products.

It has a budget of around €143,000.

Mayor Ramon FernandezPacheco encouraged locals to visit the market and buy a gift for friends or relatives, and at the same time their act will help others.

Five injured in crash HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Isabel surrounded by councillors and home-care co-ordinators.

MAYOR of Adra Manuel Cortes met the town’s oldest woman, Isabel Lidueña, to mark her 103rd birthday.

He was accompanied by two local councillors, the manager of the local care

home and the home-care co-ordinators.

They presented Isabel with a commemorative plaque, a cake and flowers. The mayor had a chat with Isabel and found her to be in good health and very lucid.

She is the longest user of the home-care service which was launched four years ago. The mayor promised to guarantee assistance services for all elderly people in the town.

FOUR adults and a girl of four were injured when the vehicle in which they were travelling left the N-344 road and hit a tree. A witness called the emergency services to alert them to the accident in the Retamar area.

The child, three women aged 23, 25 and 45, and a man aged 38, were taken to El Toyo Hospital.

Giant Nativity scene A GIANT Nativity scene can be visited in Pulpi until January 6.

It has been created by local artist Alfonso Muñoz and has more than 50 pieces, sculptures, lighting and sound.

It has been organised by the town hall and the artist says that creating Nativity scenes has been one of his main hobbies for more than 20 years. During this time, he has acquired the pieces, some of which he says are true works of art, and are now on show for everyone to see.

The mayor, Juan Pedro Garcia, thanked him for the effort he has put into creating the scene and gave him a plaque in recognition of his work. He invited everyone to visit the Nativity scene which includes characteristic local elements, including a replica of the church.

A race around the town REGISTRATION for the San Silvestre Urban Race in El Ejido will be open until Boxing Day. It will include the main boulevard in the town, the municipal park and the Arturo Muñoz roundabout, and is due to be held on December 27.

Grant for local football team THE €15,000 award will be for equipment and maintenance CUEVAS DEL ALMANZORA Town Hall has given a €15,000 grant to the local football club which plays in the Andalucian Senior Second Division.

He said that the council supported local sports and appreciated the huge efforts made by the club.

The money will be used for equipment and maintenance.

Stalker gets 3 months A MAN has been sentenced to three months in prison for following and threatening two women for several days in Almeria, in February 2013.

He asked them for a light for his cigarette and then stared at them from nearby. They felt uncomfortable and intimidated and left the area but he began to follow them.

From then on, he continued to follow them and they saw him outside their building, staring at their apartments when they looked out the window. One of them was near home with her daughter-in-law when he began to chase after them with an open craft knife in his hand.

Ten days later she was at her grandmother’s house and saw him walking around nervously outside when she looked out of the window.

He was sentenced for threatening behaviour but it was taken into consideration that he suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, which affects his behaviour. His sentence has been suspended.

Childline Andalucia now has a 24-hour online help service TEAM will be vetted, trained and experienced in dealing with minors CHILDLINE Andalucia has announced its inauguration in Spain as an official charity with a 24-hour online help service and child-friendly interactive website for southern Spain: www.childlineandalucia.org Based on the UK model and working alongside Spanish authorities, Childline Andalucia aims to support the immediate needs of expatriate children and teens through dedicated and confidential support and advice.

For the first time in Spain, children from the expat community will have a dedicated contact point for dealing with issues including bullying, cyber bullying, drugs, domestic violence, abuse and suicide awareness. The helpline will also offer links for Spanish children to their

The website was officially launched on Monday, December 14 and a dedicated telephone service is due to follow

in the New Year, plus there are plans to extend the service beyond the expatriate community.

sations and groups.

Tracey-Leigh Bennett, the founder of Childline Andalucia, said: “As of December 14, 2015, children will be able to contact a dedicated professional who will provide expert support for any sensitive issues they may have, via the contact form on the ‘Ask Ziggy’ pages of the website.”

She went on to say: “the team at Childline Andalucia will be vetted, trained and experienced in dealing with issues of minors. A melting pot of cultures INTERNATIONAL MIGRANT DAY was held at the Sports Pavillion in Huercal-Overa to celebrate the 57 cultures that live in the town.

The town hall holds the event to offer everyone the opportunity to learn about the culture, music, gastronomy and handicrafts of the nationalities that make up the local society. The mayor, Domingo Fernandez, said it is also a way to strengthen ties between the local population and foreign residents.

Local councillor Monica Sanchez met with groups of foreign residents of the town to make sure that they could all take part and feel that they are important within the town.

She said that locals want to learn more about the foreigners’ roots and that they had spent a nice day in which everyone mixed.

Two kestrels released back into the wild A PAIR of kestrels was released in the Sierra Maria-Los Velez Natural Park after recovering from a fracture and malnutrition.

The birds were released by the Junta de Andalucia Delegate for the Environment and Territorial Planning, Antonio Martinez, and the President of the Board of Directors of the park, Dietmar Roth, after their stay at the Recovery Centre for Endangered Species in Velez Blanco.

One of them remained at the recovery centre for almost four months and the other for two months.

CHRISTMAS is a time for family, friends and festivities, but all too often it can cover up a dark and violent time of year as alcohol abuse, depression and domestic strain unfold.

It’s times like these that we must step in and step up. By raising awareness and creating a culture of neighbourly love and openness we can give sufferers the strength to seek help. Let’s create an environment where people not only speak out, but actively look for the signs of domestic violence. People subconsciously avoid the ugly and vicious, it’s easier to keep your head down and yourself to yourself.

Well we say no more. Not when it comes to a woman’s life, her mental health, her children and her dreams. One good Samaritan can make a world of difference, but a community where every member will stand up for one another, can change the world.

Christmas can be a lonely time of year, and, because it’s supposed to mean something, and you’re supposed to be happy, you can feel at your emptiest. When you look around and realise that you’re alone in a foreign country, it’s tempting just to pour an extra large drink and look the other way.

Well you’re not alone, because this Christmas you can be a leader, a friend, a shoulder to cry on. So instead of locking the door and drawing the blinds, we ask that you offer your support to your community because someone somewhere out there needs it.

If you have seen domestic violence among your family, friends or community, we implore you today to take action. You don’t have to call the police, or get angry.

Sometimes all you have to do is let it be known that you are there. Pop round with some food to check in, have a quiet word in someone’s ear, be a presence in their life. It might not make a difference straight away, but whether it’s in one week or one year, that person might ask for your help. And you may have saved their life.

It could be a man who is too embarrassed to admit that his partner is abusing him. It could be elderly parents who silently hope that their child will turn it all around. It might be a woman you’ve seen frightened by her own shadow. Or those children across the road who utterly dread Christmas time and wish it would all just go away.

Remember that the spirit of Christmas is about giving. This Christmas we ask that you consider giving a little bit of your time, a little bit of your heart, and the love that you have within you, to help someone close to home.

You may never know if you made a difference, but good people don’t need gratitude. Deep inside you know it is the right thing to do.

If, however, you see serious violence, or if children are involved, then pick up the phone now and call the police. Their life is in your hands.

“Even though she had obtained a restraining order against him, she felt that her inlaws and the villagers, as well as the social worker and Local Police, were unsympathetic to her as the only English woman.

She packed all her belongings into her car one day and drove back to the UK, where she now lives, unfortunately still looking over her shoulder.

“The Spanish culture is more macho than in the UK, where men have in recent years played a more equal role in the home and as a result show their partners more respect.

“Women who have moved to Spain and particularly those who have Spanish partners also lack family support.”

THE Casino Mediterraneo in Alicante has presented the plans for its new facade.

It comes after the casino was ordered to remove its bright and colourful signs and lights. Mayor Gabriel Echavarri said the plans are now ‘more in line with the environment.’

The mayor also announced his intention to install a new tourist office in the port area, which would require the removal of the carousel. The town hall is now studying the contract to see when renewal is due and where else it could be moved to.

The tourist office would be a project for 2016 and include a grant of €350,000 from the Consell.

CERTIFIED organic honey can at last be enjoyed in Mallorca thanks to beekeeper Marti Mascaro’s hard work. For 12 years Marti has been producing honey and started with just three beehives and approximately 100,000 bees.

A NEW cleaning system launched in Salobreña last month has had good results so far. The cleaning plan works on a rotating schedule to clean up a different part of the town each week.

Fuengirola shock A FUENGIROLA worker was seriously injured after being badly burned as the result of electric shocks.

RAC: Petrol could fall to £1 a litre

PETROL PRICES: Could drop by Christmas if retailers pass on savings from lower crude oil prices.

THE price of petrol in the UK should drop to £1 a litre by Christmas if retailers ‘do the right thing’ by passing on savings from the lower crude oil prices, the RAC predicts.

RAC spokesman Simon Williams said: “All we need is for the supermarkets to do the right thing and embrace the season of goodwill by passing on those savings at the pump to make Christmas that much cheaper for everyone.”

Just recently, the price of Brent crude oil dropped to its lowest rate since 2009, and now stands at around $40 a barrel. The RAC believe that this should equate to a 3p per litre drop in petrol prices at the pump, bringing the average price

Mr Williams also said: “If retailers don’t pass on the savings quickly, they will be giving themselves an unpopular Christmas boost to profits by pocketing the extra margin when they should really be passing this on to their customers instead.”

Spanish policy not in line with EU

By John Smith IT has been remarked on by the European Commission that Spanish economic policy, with regards to investment into the Alta Velocidad Española (high speed trains) and toll motorways, is not in accordance with EU policy or expectation.

The European Commission requires that the state should not make unrecoverable investments in any major infrastructure developments, and in particular it does not believe that the AVE will ever generate sufficient income to recover the investment that the government has placed in it.

Toll motorways, although generally owned by the government, are normally managed by commercial companies who charge an agreed amount which may increase during busy periods such as Christmas, although the cost of building of the 16,583 kilometres of motorways may eventually be covered.

FORMER British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has taken up a role on an advisory panel at global investment management firm Pimco, as part of a five person group described by the company as ‘worldrenowned experts on economic and political issues’.

The other members include a former US Federal Reserve chairman, retired former president of the European Central Bank and a former member of the Singapore Investment Corporation, who clearly have a pedigree that Mr Brown who earned a degree in history cannot emulate, although he was Chancellor of the Exchequer.

A spokesman for Mr Brown said he was taking on ‘a minor advisory role’, and would not financially benefit and added: “Any money goes to the office of Gordon and Sarah Brown to support their charitable and public service work.”

Many will remember that Mr Brown sold the majority of Britain’s gold reserves to raise funds at around £250 (€350) per ounce and then watched the price of gold soar to more than £1,000 (€1,400) an ounce before becoming Prime Minister and leading Labour to election defeat.

Pimco, which is owned by German asset manager Allianz, administers about $1.47 trillion (€1.34 trillion) of assets for its clients.

Berlin-based company to offer new smartphone bank in Spain THERE is a new concept in banking which was launched in Germany in January of 2015 and is now to be offered in Spain by Berlin-based company Number26, which operates through smartphones and without any need for a customer to visit a bank even to open the account.

According to Number26, it is able to offer a more convenient option in European countries where the technology and infrastructures are outdated and hidebound by bureaucracy.

New customers can sign up for an account within eight minutes, using a video chat function to verify their identity, there is no need to go to a physical bank and there aren’t even any forms to complete.

The latest world heavyweight boxing champion took the opportunity of his new status to release a whole tirade of his opinions on our lifestyle and traditions. I thought his views on free speech were particularly articulate.

After all, if without retribution, you can praise women for being successful in the world of previously male-dominated professions, then you should be able to state that in your opinion a woman’s place is in the home. Why not? As I stated recently, I think the advent of the pill has totally confused the female of our species. Almost overnight it gave women the opportunity to pick and choose their sexual ad-

To my mind the female ‘liberation’ instigated by the pill has been an unmitigated disaster for the ladies.

WE live in a world of absolutes, a world of certainties.

David Cameron knows that he is absolutely right and Jeremy Corbyn is certain of his stance. Equally, Putin versus Obama, et al.

Dedicated Christians are rock solid in their beliefs and Muslims know without a doubt that Islam is the one true religion. The same can be said about the countless other religions of the world.

Only their own faith represents truth and light and therefore the followers of all other doctrines are infidels, heretics and Godless heathens.

Atheists are equally adamant in their non-belief of

Some of the angriest people I have ever met are committed atheists.

This intolerance, aka bigotry, shows itself in a variety

The vast majority of humanity wants nothing more than to live in peace and security and coexist with their fellow men and women, indeed there are still those of all nationalities who dedicate themselves to helping others without conditions, regardless of colour or creed.

If the combined resources of the human race were utilised and used for the good of all, disease would be wiped out, wars would be a thing of the past and famine become an out-of-date concept.

The simple idiom ‘live and let live’ is the tenet that would ensure our survival, but the self-destructive side of human nature ensures this will never happen.

Effects of Schengen breakdown STRENGTH of the Euro could be hurt and may even be rejected by some member states

WITH the problems of migrants and refugees rushing to Europe and the recent Paris atrocities, six of the 26 members of Schengen, which allows free movement across member’s borders, have reintroduced some form of new border control.

Austria, Germany, Hungary, Slovakia and Sweden are the only countries so far to officially restrict movement across their borders, but if the flood of migrants continues then others including Belgium, Greece and Italy could well follow suit. France has also decided for different and understandable reasons to impose sporadic checks on those entering the country.

The decisions seem to be quite reasonable considering what has happened in the past year, but there are ramifications which need to be considered as they could have a serious impact upon the economy of every member of the EU, and the actual strength of the Euro.

Thinking of others AS we approach Christmas, it is very interesting to see the wealth of stories that come in concerning the number of Christmas lunches and fundraisers that are taking place, and where the funds raised are being directed.

During the past year there has been a great deal of activity with regards to animals, and cancer, but it is interesting that as we get closer to Christmas there have been a number of activities across all regions we cover raising funds for children.

A large number of our readers have been involved in assisting the underprivileged to ensure they and especially their children enjoy Christmas Day with gifts and food.

At this time of year, children receive so many gifts they often can’t cope with them all. A number of organisations have collection points for new and good quality used toys, many suggesting they be pre-wrapped with an indication of whether they are for a boy or girl, with an approximation of the appropriate age range.

There has been a great deal of activity to obtain food for food banks with volunteers collecting food at supermarkets to ensure they are well stocked for Christmas.

Others are organising meals, not just for the poor, but also those who have no family to share the day with.

If anyone wants to offer their services to help cook food or is looking for somewhere to go and spend the day, it shouldn’t be too difficult to find an option through one of the many local charities and religious groups.

Ambulance drivers can’t find their way to emergencies OVER recent weeks there have been various pieces in the local papers about the slow response rates for ambulances in Orihuela Costa. There are similar problems experienced by people living on the San Miguel urbanisation, El Galan.

On Sunday November 29, the 112 emergency number was used to summons an ambulance to Calle Huelva, El Galan, to attend Mrs Joyce Byne.

The ambulance was called at quarter past 10 but didn’t arrive until nearly 11am. The ambulance drivers had no idea where El Galan was and had spent over 15 minutes trying to find the road in the town of San Miguel.

They then admitted that it was only after they couldn’t find the street in the town that they used their sat nav! Even with this aid they failed to find the street and called for instructions. When they eventually arrived they told us that we should have given the address as being in Blue Lagoon or Las Filipinas. We did tell them that the area was El Galan on maps and on our padrons!

It is indefensible that ambulance drivers do not have adequate maps, sat navs or a central control station that can give them appropriate and correct directions.

Unfortunately, Joyce was pronounced dead. However, any one of our neighbours may need an ambulance in an emergency and you do not expect the ambulance drivers to have no idea of the geography of the area they serve.

I HAVE been reading in the papers about the poor ambulance service in Orihuela Costa.

What I want to ask is what about the non-existent fire service? There has been a spate of fires in rubbish bins all over the area. You phone 112 and wait and wait, while flames and smoke shoot up to the sky, and most times the fire engine doesn’t even bother to come and have a look.

The other day there was a big blaze and many of my neighbours also called the fire brigade but no fire engine turned up. The same has happened when cars go up in flames.

What happens if it is one of our houses on fire? We would be dead before any fire engine got anywhere near us. It is scary. I think people ought to be told how bad the fire and ambulance service is before they decide to live out here.

Good care Re: letter from Cliff & Desiree, Mallorca, EWN 1584 IT IS so bad that Desiree has had to wait six months for treatment for

breast cancer in England. I hope she makes a good recovery and soon.

In July 1988, I had a mammogram and got a perfect, clear report. November 1, I felt a lump and on December 14 had a 4.5 cm lump removed. That was followed by 15 doses of radiation and five years on Tamoxifen.

On August 26 and again on October 7 this year, my doctor said I didn’t have a problem (although it was very obvious I did) as last year’s mammogram was clear. She did finally refer me for another mammogram. After not hearing anything for two weeks, I went to the local hospital in Benalmadena, where there was no record on the screen and the receptionist said it was probably “still going round the system.” So on Thursday October 22, I

went to the Emergency Department.

The Triage nurse said I should go to my doctor; he got me in to see a wonderful doctor, who organised a mammogram and echography for the next morning. After extensive tests, on November 12, I saw the surgeon, had an x-ray, blood test, and ECG, and the following week I went to Malaga Clinic to have the lump frozen, with radiation to follow. This is public, not private treatment!

I’ve had 27 good years and at 82 I won’t get that long again, but I’ll have a damn good try! What I can’t understand is why do so many people go back to England when they need help?

It’s Christmas time...

Bah humbug!

In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man WELL it’s that time of year again, goodwill to all men, ho ho ho, or in my case, bah humbug.

Don’t get me wrong Christmas is OK, or should I say it was OK. I used to love Christmas, it was just a nice holiday. Who remembers how we used to look forward to the TV shows, the Morecambe and Wise special, then it was Only Fools and Horses?

It’s now just a commercial event that starts way too early. I’ve seen stuff in stores since October. October? People haven’t even finished paying for their summer holidays. And big store TV adverts get more obscure. There is one on TV with some geezer on the moon who wants a telescope!

Please tell me what that has to do with Christmas. All too deep for me. Their marketing department needs to get off the silly stuff and get back to Earth. Idiots! And did you know it was supposedly Coca Cola that

put Santa in a red suit?

Tell me how annoying it is to go and buy a load of presents, especially clothing, only to see it two weeks later at half price. Electrical goods that are superseded by a newer model by the time you have finished unwrapping it.

Everything is more expensive. Most of the time Christmas finishes up being a stressful time. Now there is Black Friday and Cyber Monday. As my very good Chinese friend would say ‘what a road of borrocks.’

‘We buy things we don’t need with money we don’t have to impress people we don’t like’ (nicked quote). The thing I really don’t understand is the food shopping. It’s a couple of days off. Why do some people buy as if it’s Armageddon? Like there is going to be a siege for a month. And they need to have enough food in the house to feed a regiment of starving soldiers.

One of the other things that ticks me off is that everything stops. Try and get something done after the first week of December. You get ‘let’s leave it until after Christmas’. And when is after Christmas? Around the 8th of January!!

Oh well only seven more moaning days till Christmas.

Speeding fines have increased this year AS part of a new series, we answer some common driving questions, kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers.

DGT: Say rise is partly caused by the increase in the number of vehicles on the road.

IN the first three quarters of 2015, €127.4 million has been collected from drivers caught by fixed and mobile radars. In 2014, the total was €129.6 million, increasing from €124 million in 2013 and €120 million in 2012. If the current trend continues, the end of year figure will be almost €170 million for 2015.

The DGT believe that the increase is not caused entirely by an increase in speed by individuals, but by an increase in the number of vehicles using the roads. Similarly, the DGT also say that despite the figures for speeding fines increasing, other sanctions show a downward trend.

Another possibility is that traffic studies influenced the decision to drastically modify speed control on the roads. In February, following a 40 per cent increase in speed related deaths in January, it was announced that more focus would be given to secondary roads, which account for 80 per cent of all

related fatalities, a figure which compares directly with the 81 per cent increase in speeding motorists caught on this type of road.

Speeding fines have something of a unique character, in so much as many people who get caught speeding fail to acknowledge or accept their own failings and many believe that the fines are nothing more than a way for the government to increase taxation.

In fact, a recent survey states that 90 per cent of speeding driver believe that their fine is nothing more than a hidden tax. However, the DGT point out that the taxable element of fines has reduced, despite the increase in revenue, dropping from €392 million in 2011 to €458 million in 2014.

Former Director General of the DGT, Pere Navarro said: “Traffic law remains the law most violated in our country with nearly 13 million penalty proceedings a year between all administrations, which indicates that fines are necessary.”

Are over-65s free of capital?

The law on capital gains tax seems to be clear.

When you are over 65, and have owned your house as a principle residence for more than three years, and are an official resident of more than three years, you are free of Spanish capital gains tax when you sell your home.

Enjoy drinking at Christmas time

By Marcus Hopkins CHEAP drink in Spain together with holidays and the fun of the festive season really is the time to be merry. To stay happy though, it might be worth taking a few steps to ensure that you and the ones you love keep healthy and safe.

Be aware of how much you’re drinking.

How many does it take to enjoy yourself?

Probably less than you think. Being merry is much more fun than crawling around the toilet floor. Have a few more and you might become a burden on the Spanish health system or your family.

Be aware of your behaviour too. If friends say you’ve had too many, believe them!

Yes, drink to enjoy, but don’t drink to destroy. It can be far easier being fun and festive when you’re relatively sober than it can when you’re smashed. Let’s face it, most of us have probably said never again at some time in the past. But we are only human after all.

SIMPLE STEPS: To keep you and your loved ones happy, healthy and safe.

Do be more aware of the need for personal safety at this time of year. Drinking far too much is all too easy and cheap, but that

You know not to drink and drive. Yet every year at this time peoples’ careers are shattered because they thought they could drive home just the once. Until of course, they’re stopped and charged, or worse still, they kill someone. Make sure none of this happens to you or anyone you’re out with.

If you’re a real friend, you’ll never let anyone do anything so stupid.

Party safely and have fun. Have a great time and create a Christmas you’ll treasure forever. Gauge your drinking. Judge the situation. Keep a sober eye open to look after the people you are with.

My friend says her doctor has given her some injections. Are there any effective treatments?

Nowadays there are many options to keep psoriasis under control including creams, ultra-

violet light, tablets and even intravenous medications for extreme cases.

Do I need to see a dermatologist? Will I need tests?

Dermatologists are skin experts and therefore are qualified to diagnose and treat this condition. Usually a simple examination is sufficient for diagnosis although sometimes a biopsy of an affected area may be ordered.

Sometimes psoriasis can also affect joints.

This requires joint evaluation and control by a Specialist in Internal Medicine and a Dermatologist.

Is there a cure?

So far no cure has been found but we have many different treatments to improve the condition. Sunlight and seawater are also very effective.

Will my children get it too?

Genetics are behind many medical conditions including psoriasis.

RAISING MONEY: The volunteers have performed at various venues throughout December.

Sexy Santas help MACS SO far, they have raised almost €1,000 towards the goal of providing a hospice MACS, the Mojacar Area Support Group, is an all volunteer organisation designed to provide support for cancer patients and their loved ones.

The Sexy Santas are volunteers helping to raise money to provide services offered by MACS. On December 6, the Sexy Santas performed at Badgers, Thomas, Imperial Palace, Dolce Vita, and Bella Vista restaurants. On December 12, they performed at the Dollar Bar, Pueblo Laguna, Dolce Vita and Joe Beach.

So far the Sexy Santas have raised almost €1,000 towards the goal of providing a hospice.

Traditional Mojacar’s first Christmas lights on in selfie photo competition Almeria city

MOJACAR Town Council has organised the first of what they hope will become an annual Christmas selfie competition as part of its extensive programme of activities for Christmas 2015.

The selfie has now become incorporated into our lives. There are few people who don’t have several among their photos and who haven’t shared one with friends and family. These days the selfie forms an essential part of the memories of all travellers.

In this first contest, only one selfie per participant is allowed. Photographs can be solo or group portraits.

Images must have a Christmas theme or be related to the dates.

Christmas decorations, posters, drawings or any other resource can be used that conveys the spirit of Christmas in a fun and original way.

To enter, the selfies must be printed in 15 cm x 20 cm format and delivered to the Department of Culture before Friday December 18. Any resident of the town can compete, although minors will need parental permission.

A Christmas Grand Gala A GRAND Christmas Gala will be held in Mojacar on December 28 at 9pm.

The main performance is ‘Cuatro e n C o m p añ ia’ which will be led by Almeria dancer Inka Diaz and her dance company.

There wi l l b e f o u r dancers, two singers, a guitarist and two percussionists. It will be held in the theatre of the Multiple Use Centre Mojacar Fuente.

THE traditional Christmas lights are now on in Almeria City for everyone to enjoy.

The municipal Nativity Scene of Almeria City is at the Plaza de la Constitucion until January 6, open every day from 11am to 9pm. There will also be a Neapolitan 19th century style Nativity Scene at the Doña Pakyta Art Museum in Plaza Emilio Perez until January 10.

An ice rink will be installed in the Mirador de la Rambla (Avenida Federico Garcia Lorca) until January 10, and there will also be a Christmas market in the same area until January 7.

The Heritage Interpretation Centre will hold special Christmas free guided tours this Saturday, on Boxing Day and January 2 at 10.30am.

SMILE PLEASE: Photographs can be solo or group portraits.

This year there will be two categories, an individual selfie and a group selfie.

The photos will be posted on the Mojacar Informa Facebook page, where anyone who wants to can view and vote for their favourite selfie.

The winners will be the images with the most ‘likes’. The winners will be announced on December 22. The photographs will be exhibited at the Mojacar Centro de Usos Multiples as well being published on the town’s official Facebook page.

Puppy rescue in Albox UNUSUAL charity which is caring specifically for the youngest and trying to find homes for them

By John Smith ALTHOUGH there are a number of charities which exist to house unwanted dogs and cats in Spain, there is a very unusual charity which specifically looks after puppies only and the bulk of those rehomed are sent to Germany, Holland or the UK. Based in Albox, Diane Price and Chris Clark act as fosterers for a whole range of puppies of different breeds. They aren’t kept in kennels but are looked after in a home environment, and have all the necessary documents and inoculations until they are 16weeks old when they are allowed by EU law to be moved.

Germany is the largest recipient of these puppies and it turns out that through a network of volunteers, and after careful review of applicants and the signing of a contract where the new owner agrees to ensure the puppies are spayed or neutered, they are sent with their puppy passport to mainly US

Set up in 2005, the charity has now rehomed some 2,000 puppies and they have just learnt that 50 are now living happily with families in the USA, whilst one has found its way to Japan thanks to a new service posting.

Whilst Puppy Rescue is happy to find homes in Spain for puppies, they have found that generally there are too many animals and too few prospective owners who fit the right criteria, which is why they have come up with this novel and effective concept.

This week alone, 17 puppies are being sent to Germany.

It is not a cheap way of saving the lives of these puppies, but it is efficient and the charity is always happy to receive funds to allow it to continue with its activities.

New project teaches children about marble ALL schools in Almanzora area invited to take part

By Eleanor Hawkins TEACHING schoolchildren about Macael’s heritage and history is the aim of a new project by Made in Macael, the company in charge of managing Macael’s Marble Information Centre.

The new project, called the Gymkana of Quarrying Knowledge, is run by Centre manager Carmen Liria, who has already received various groups of children from nearby schools including fourth-year primary pupils from Colegio Velazquez in Albox.

The project runs until June and children from all over the province will be visiting Macael to learn

about the history of the area and its marble through fun activities.

The visits include a guided tour of the village and a visit to the Information Centre and children will be divided into groups and given a questionnaire to fill in on what they have learned. British driver injured ALBOX firefighters were involved in a rescue operation in the early hours of Friday morning (December 11) when a 60year-old British man’s car left the road and fell into a valley in the Arboleas countryside.

Local Police, Albox firefighters, Guardia Civil and paramedics were sent to the scene and the man, who had allegedly been drinking, had to be taken to La Inmaculada hospital in Huercal-Overa as he broke a number of ribs and suffered cuts and bruising.

Christmas time comes to Albox ACTIVITIES will be held for all age groups

Sanchez Rubio affirms funding EQUALITY and Social Politics councillor Maria Jose Sanchez Rubio has reaffirmed the commitment of the Junta de Andalucia regional government to the System of Autonomy and Attention to Dependents. Rubio has reminded that the State Pact in Defence of Dependents will ensure the system will not suffer cutbacks from the Central Government.

Sanchez Rubio emphasised that the backing proposal represents a sufficient amount of funding, and that the Central

Administration will pay 50 per cent of the total cost, as is demanded under current state law, as opposed to the current contribution which has been reduced to 22 per cent.

Rubio also said that the new proposal will include professional quality services.

Sanchez Rubio has underlined that currently Andalucia remains at the forefront in application of the dependents attention system. There are more than 179,400 beneficiaries, 22 per cent of the national total.

CHRISTMAS TIME: Has now arrived in Albox and will include a traditional concert.

By Sam Croft CHRISTMAS has arrived in Albox and there will be activities for people of all ages.

The Albox School of Music will put on a musical directed at small children, Papanu, on Friday December 18. Other activities in

the town will include a traditional Christmas concert on December 20, and a Christmas Market, which will take place between December 18 and December 20.

On December 27, it will be time for the annual San Silvestre Race. The race is attracting more and more runners every year, some

looking to compete and some just wishing to have a good time in a holiday atmosphere.

Of course the festivities will conclude with the traditional Three Kings Parade on January 5. After the parade, children and parents will have an opportunity to meet the Three Kings in the Plaza de San Francisco.

Raising for victims LOCALS have been buying up all the plants to help raise funds

By Eleanor Hawkins THE Municipal Women’s Information Centre has managed to raise €551 this year.

Locals have once again shown their solidarity by buying up all the plants the service, part of Albox Council, had prepared to raise funds for a local shelter for women and children victims of gender violence.

About 200 poinsettias were available for local residents to buy from a stand the information centre set up at the weekly market and the money raised will be used to buy presents for children and women spending this Christmas at the shelter.

Equality councillor at Albox Town Hall Ana Belen Trinidad helped staff at the stand and later said: “once again the initiative has been well received by the people of Albox. We bought 200 plants for our annual collaboration with the shelter and locals participated in an incredible way.”

The charity poinsettia sale has become a tradition in Albox which has been running for a number of years. This year it was included as part of activities to honour International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women which also included a free self defence course for local women which showed what basic techniques to use in the case of an attack.

Albox Council also takes part in informative programmes for youngsters at local schools and last year renewed its protocol for actions against gender violence which allows quick work and collaboration amongst the authorities and emergency service when a case is detected.

Albox Mayor Rogelio Mena said he had taken part in the initiative, buying a number of plants and, of course, supporting all initiatives aimed to put an end to the problem.

“Once again the people of Albox have shown their desire to help fight for equality and put an end to gender violence and domestic terrorism,” Mena said.

Competition brings extra Xmas spirit STREET with most original decorations will receive a present

By Eleanor Hawkins THE Albox street that presents the most original Christmas decorations this year will receive an early present from the Three Kings. AEPA AlboxValle del Almanzora business association will be awarding the winner of the Christmas Street Decoration Competition, supported by the local council, with €200.

Residents, businesses, associations or any other group wishing to take part had better hurry as today (December 17) is the last day to sign up for the competition which aims to bring an extra dose of Christmas spirit to the local streets on top of that already present thanks to the traditional lights.

The competition itself and election

of the winning street will begin on December 21, and the decorations must stay up until January 6 with the participants responsible for maintaining the decorations. There is no set theme, meaning those taking part can create any Christmas-based decorations they like.

AEPA president Martin Martos encouraged all local residents and businesses to take part in the initiative to help brighten up Albox’s streets for Christmas. This, he said, would help benefit local commerce and therefore everyone in town.

This year, locals will have the chance to choose and vote for their favourite street on social media sites. The organisers will be creating an event on Facebook with the number of likes each

street received counting for 50 per cent of the final votes. The other 50 per cent will be decided by a jury formed by representatives of the town hall’s Culture department and AEPA. The main aspects judged will be originality and the use of recyclable elements.

“We want all our members and friends to take part and may the best competitors win. But we also want to encourage everyone in the area to visit and do their Christmas shopping at local businesses. This is a very important time of year to boost business in the area, which the jobs of friends, family and acquaintances depend on,” the association president said.

By Spain’s best known expatriate gardening author living in Spain for 25 years.

YEAR by year there are probably more plants purchased in the run-up to Christmas than the previous year. Plants to brighten up front porches, covered terraces or the interior of the house.

Typical purchases include poinsettias, azaleas, cyclamens, hydrangeas, orchids, anthuriums (flamingo flower), miniature roses, miniature holly seedlings, mock peppers, heathers, Christmas cacti and bowls of flowering bulbs.

However, many will not survive much beyond the New Year. We look at some of the typical problems and the practical actions that can be taken during the festive season.

1. Inevitably plants become stressed by the changes in climate involved in being transported from the growers to the wholesale market then to garden centres, weekly markets,

2. Even when apparently healthy and in full flower, some plants can start to shrivel, drop leaves or yellow even when in ideal conditions. Keep such plants in a cool place and just damp, bringing them into the dining room or lounge for the minimum number of hours necessary to create a major display,

and fit water humidifiers to the backs of radiators.

3. Many nurseries water plants with non-chlorinated water so do the same using rain water from a butt or water from a local spring or fountain.

4. Most plants don’t like chilly draughts. It is better to locate plants in a sheltered corner or nook, but where they will receive natural light.

5. But lack of light is often a problem! Forced plants often come from a hot house that has been floodlit to provide the equivalent of direct sunlight 24 hours a day. Many Spanish houses do not have wide internal window sills so place plants on furniture near windows where they will be in the light, but not directly in sunlight.

6. Change of feed! Many

Christmas plants will have been grown unnaturally fast. They will have been fed profusely to stimulate fast growth and early flowering. So feed your new plants as soon as purchased, or received as a gift, and then start to wean them down to once a week or a fortnightly feed. In this way you can reduce the growth rate of the plant and prolong its flowering.

7. Azaleas and poinsettias are often not one plant but a pot of closely planted small cuttings.

They are often difficult to keep beyond the festive season and if the cuttings are planted up separately they don’t always take.

8. Frost! Some plants are frost tender so do not leave out overnight or in a window if living in the mountains above the frost line. Fortunately, cyclamens, heathers and azaleas are all very frost resistant.

9. Drying out! The humidity inside your house is likely to be significantly lower than that of the greenhouses.

10. Be careful to not place plants near to a log fire, closed wood stove, central heating radiator or air-conditioning unit.

Water to just keep the soil damp, and spray the flowers and leaves daily.

Herbs can spice up your home and your health HERBS are an attractive and essential part of any good garden and will also help brighten up the home and kitchen.

Not only can they spice up home-made cooking, they can also attract new wildlife to the garden and lend an air of knowhow and skill to a property, whilst being a valuable teaching tool for blooming gardeners.

Herbs which aren’t eaten can be put to excellent use in fending off pests and creating an eco-system that encourages other herbs to thrive. Mint, for example, can deter ants and flies whilst borage flowers attract bees.

The size and shape of the garden isn’t important with herbs, which take up less space and aren’t as climate dependent as plants.

Herbs can also be used for medicinal purposes for a wide variety of issues and growing them can be a firm part of a healthy lifestyle.

Caution is urged when it comes to consuming any herbs, as many are purely for decorative purposes and are dangerous to the human body.

Others, such as chamomile, are broadly safe but may be harmful to pregnant women and infants, so always exercise due care.

DOGS have always been credited with the power of sensing supernatural influences which are invisible to human eyes.

In Wales only dogs could see the death-bringing hounds of Annwn, and in ancient Greece the dogs were aware when Hecate was at a crossroads foretelling a death.

Dogs are believed to be aware of the presence of ghosts, and their barking, whimpering or howling is said to be the first warning of supernatural occurrences.

In England, there are many instances of black dog ghosts which are said to haunt lanes, bridges, crossroads, footpaths and gates, particularly in Suffolk, Norfolk and the Isle of Man. Some black dogs are said to be unquiet ghosts of wicked souls, but others are friendly guides and protectors to travellers.

The Barguest of northern England could also appear as a pig or a goat, but was most commonly a huge black dog with large eyes and feet which left no prints.

Tales of packs of ghostly hounds have also been recorded all over Britain, often said to be heard howling as they pass by on

stormy nights rather than actually seen.

These hounds generally foretell death (or at least disaster) if they are seen, and the proper action is to drop face-down on the ground to avoid spotting them.

When a dog howls in an otherwise silent night, it is said to be an omen of death, or at least of misfortune.

A howling dog outside the house of a sick person was once thought to be an omen that they would die, especially if the dog was driven away and returned to howl again. A dog which gives a single howl, or three howls, and then falls silent is said to be marking a death that has just occurred nearby.

Dogs were feared as carriers of rabies, sometimes even a healthy dog was killed if it had bitten someone, because of the belief that if the dog developed rabies (even many years later), the bitten person would be afflicted.

Pets for children TAKING care of a pet can be a positive experience for children that instils a sense of responsibility, whilst providing companionship, fun, and the chance to learn.

By choosing the right pet for a child you can bring them years of happiness and help them learn the skills, emotions, and thought that will help them grow into mature teenagers.

Keeping a pet can be quite a serious business, however, which involves financial commitment, living space and safety concerns. Keep your choice basic for children getting their first pet with one of the following ideas.

Fish are a terrific choice, as long as you’ve got a sturdy bowl or tank that is spill proof.

Taking care of one, or a few, will teach a child about feeding times, tank cleaning, as well as all the natural things they’ll pick up about fish and their underwater lives.

Goldfish are actually quite difficult to raise without a rather complex array of filters and chemicals, as well as other fish for company. Betta fish, also known as the Siamese fighting fish, are a better choice as they thrive in isolation and can

Hamsters prefer the solitary life but gerbils and guineas are

best in young same-sex pairs as they enjoy company.

Children should learn how to take care of their furry friends gently to avoid small bites and will understand how to handle something much smaller and more fragile than themselves.

For slightly older children, cats can also be an excellent addition to the family. They require much less space than

dogs, are notoriously independent and will provide a generous share of entertainment for the children with adorable antics and mysterious ways.

Of course under threat, cats can be quite aggressive, but this can be mitigated by selecting a friendlier breed. The Abyssinian, American shorthair and Burmese breeds are all fairly easygoing, sociable and perfect for the children.

Micro pets are proving to be popular WHILST micro pets have become quite trendy over the past few years and tiny pigs are without any doubt very cute, there have been a number of horror stories in which the adorable pet suddenly put on weight and developed into a full blown pig, and the seller had disappeared.

Pygmy goats are generally a different kettle of fish if you will excuse the mixed metaphor. They can make great pets, but

they shouldn’t really be kept in the house.

There is no question that they can be taught not to urinate or defecate within the house, but housebreaking can actually refer to what they can get up to if they are allowed to live in a house. At the end of the day, they are powerful little animals with hooves and horns that are curious and they just love to climb!

If you really want to keep a goat inside

the house, you need to consider removing the horns when the animal is young, and also in the case of males, they have a habit to smell and to be aggressive so they need to be neutered.

You need to consider their feeding as apart from pellets, they need to have access to good quality grass or hay which is also not too conducive to household living.

THERE have been zillions of articles in the press recently trying to debunk commonly-held views about which foods are bad for us. Trying to debunk views that salt causes high blood pressure. Carbohydrates and red meat are bad. Dairy products are fattening.

Fresh is always better than frozen. And brown bread is better than white.

The same old, week after week, ‘report’, each producing more waffle than a Belgian baker. Dark chocolate, coffee, red wine, good for you because they have antioxidants which neutralise the free radicals in your body.

Next week, hang on! That earlier study was flawed, they’re actually bad for you, they have too much sugar.

IT’S best to look to the middle ground, where most results are to be found RESEARCH: Same old, week after week. It can mean all or nothing to people.

Next month, they’re good for you again, they contain a newly-identified chemical that reacts with an amino acid/enzyme/protein in such a way that scientists only now comprehend.

And next month, sorry! Those findings were overhasty, it’s still bad for you. Let’s be honest, practically everything that feels good or tastes good is probably finally going to somehow make you ill anyway.

The trouble with all this ‘research’ is that it can mean both all or nothing to people. We’re all individuals and what works for some doesn’t work for others, and anyone who says otherwise is a bit like men claiming they only read Playboy ‘for the articles’.

It’s not unusual for research to produce conflicting results. It’s better to

step back and look at the bigger picture. It’s important that neither nutritionists nor the public are swayed by one study that confirms their fears, or another that validates their enthusiasm.

Look to the middle ground, where most results are found.

Basically, almost all food is OK in moderation, and moderate exercise is good for us, just as my old granny used to say. Nothing is new, it seems. Oh, how could we all be so naive!

So, excuse me while I shoot off to the gym for my regular 90 minute session. And that’s no myth! In total, 15 minutes of cardio, 15 minutes of weights. And 60 minutes of talking myself into it.

Two Porsche models getting a new turbo PORSCHE has confirmed something that most fans already suspected. Just like their big brother the 911 Carrera, the Boxster and Cayman models are getting a turbo.

Boris Johnson shows his green credentials in Paris and not just his tie USED Nissan’s zero emission shuttle service AS the first week of 21st Climate Change Conference (COP21) came to a close, Mayor of London, Boris Johnson MP, took advantage of Nissan’s zero emission shuttle service as he departed Paris on December 4.

Opting for environmentally-friendly transport, Mr Johnson took the opportunity to experience the new 30kWh battery version of the world’s best-selling all electric vehicle the Nissan LEAF. He was driven in the Nissan LEAF from his hotel to Gare du Nord train

station, bringing his time at the annual UN climate change conference to an end.

The London mayor and British politician, who is paving the way for low emission transport in his home city, is the first politician around the world to experience the new, longer range model of the Nissan LEAF. Mr Johnson joined events in Paris to speak in the Climate Summit for Local Leaders earlier in the day. As he said farewell to Paris, the car provided zero emission, 100 per cent

electric transport so he could commence his journey home.

Speaking about his experience in the new Nissan LEAF 30 kWh, Mr Johnson said: “It’s a good feeling to see a British built export driving around the streets of Paris as the official shuttle car of a major UN conference.

“I’m delighted I got to experience the new, longer range Nissan LEAF whilst at COP21. Zero emission cars like this will play a real part in improving the air quality in our cities and tackling climate change.”

Top bowlers battle it out in local competitions THE Federation of Andalucian Bowling (FAB) Men’s and Ladies Pairs and Singles competitions ran over two weeks in November and attracted keen competitors from Mazarron, Almeria, Cabrera and Indalo Bowling Clubs.

The Men’s Pairs Final, held at Cabrera Bowling Club, was played in atrocious weather conditions, with a mean cold wind and not a lot of sun. John Fitzgerald and Bryan Thompson battled against Reg Birmingham and Chris Ewer, all from Almeria BC. This was going to be a close final and after all players performing well,

John and Bryan won through 18 to 13.

The Men’s Singles Final was played at Indalo Bowling Club with perfect bowling weather.

It turned out to be an amazing match with good shots being matched by even better shots.

With plenty of spectator help cheering on, the sustained pressure by John Fitzgerald told eventually and he beat Richard Swain, of Indalo BC, 21 to 13.

The Ladies Pairs Final, played at Indalo, was between Christine Ivin and Linda Lester against Barbara Roscoe and Babs Davis (defending Champions from last year) from Inda-

lo BC. Again it was a very good match but Barbara played a magnificent game which resulted in her and Babs taking the trophy.

After two very close last end wins in the semi-finals, the Ladies Singles Final was contested between Linda Lester and Maureen Milsom, both from Indalo BC. Maureen took an early lead and held her nerve, after being pushed all the way by Linda, to win 21 to 11 in a very emotional contest.

The trophies and cash prizes were presented by Ruth Compton who also thanked all the organisers for the event.
