Hundreds filled the Plaza de las Velas in Almeria City, demonstrating their solidarity with France after the attacks.

In a simple ceremony with a minute’s silence, the honorary French consul Nicole PicatEmery thanked Almerienses for their pain, their unity and their

affection for France. “There are no words, only an immense Thank You,” she said.

Despite the difficulty in identifying many of the victims, the French and Spanish authorities confirmed the death of Juan Alberto Gonzalez Garrido who died in the carnage of the Bataclan concert hall. A 29-year-old engineer from Granada who worked in Madrid, his father’s family come from Viator.

Laura Qartubi from Roquetas arrived in Paris with her partner three days before the slaughter. They had intended to go out on the night of the attacks but were advised by the police to return to their rented apartment near the Bataclan.

“They said we were in danger,” Laura told the Almeria media.

Tortoises released KEEPING a ‘Tortuga mora’ tortoise used to be an Almeria tradition, but this was turned into a criminal offence when the law changed on July 1. Since then, 2,775 tortoises have been col-

lected by the regional government’s environmental department, 67 per cent of them locally-bred. Vets examined the native tortoises and have now released them in Sierra Cabrera.

No TB outbreak TUBERCULOSIS has been ruled out for 16 people who had been in contact with a Nijar resident recently diagnosed with the disease. Another six people are still undergoing tests, the Junta de Andalucia regional government’s Health Department has announced while stressing that the case is an isolated one and there are no grounds for calling it an outbreak.

Cement jobs safe A REDUNDANCY plan which has been hanging over the heads of Lafage Holcim cement company since it was created after two companies merged a year ago will not be affecting jobs in Carboneras.

Although the company, which employs 1,000 people in Spain, will be reducing staff levels by 10 per cent, company sources said the Carboneras plant would not be affected.

Young vulture ready to spread its wings WILL be set free after it becomes acclimatised to life in the wild

By Linda Hall ENVIRONMENTAL rangers were called in to rescue a young vulture from a Nijar irrigation deposit last September.

Despite all its efforts the panicked bird could not get out of the water and would have drowned without the Cabo de Gata rangers’s assistance. Discoveries of disorientated and emaciated birds are frequent in the autumn as birds make their way to Africa for the winter, they said.

Back on dry land the bird was checked over by a vet and taken to the Las Almohallas wildlife rehabilitation centre (CREA). Now that it has recovered it has been transferred to a breeding centre for scavenging birds and will be set free after it becomes acclimatised to life in the wild once more.

The Junta-run centre, where the birds have a regular supply of carrion, opened 20 years ago in the Los Velez which once had extensive colonies of vultures.

Whilst the Eiffel Tower may have been plunged into darkness, buildings in every part of the world from Australia to Gibraltar, America to Brazil, Israel to Mexico, Spain to Albania, China to UK, all registered their support.

EU commissioner warns Spain of desert future CALL for ‘long-term policies now’

By Linda Hall EXPLAINING the importance of reducing greenhouse gases to a Spanish person is not easy, Miguel Arias Cañete maintained. The former minister of Agriculture, who is now European Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, told an Almeria interviewer that explaining climate change to the inhabitants of a Pacific island is less difficult.

South Sea islanders are fully aware that tropical climate phenomena have an intensity they did not possess before, he said.

“They know that sea levels are rising and their island is disappearing because they are close to it all.”

In Spain people merely see that summers are hotter and there is little rain, although a farmer or grower knows that rainfall has changed, that weather conditions are more intense and that when hail arrives it arrives with a vengeance.

“They know that the calibre of flash floods in Spain’s Levante area is unlike anything ever known historically and that

Climate policies cannot be short-term and are not as easy as inaugurating a reservoir, Arias Cañete warned. To avert rising temperatures by the end of the century, poli-

Brits Almeria-bound early next year THE visit by Almeria City Hall’s Tourism Department to the World Travel Market in London paid off.

Meetings with UK tour operators at the beginning of this month during the trade fair – one of the world’s most important together with Fitur in Madrid and ITB in Berlin - led to a deal bringing 1,000 British tourists to El Toyo from February onwards.

Saga Holidays has agreed to send UK clients for stays of between 10 and 15 days to the Barcelo Cabo de Gata hotel from February until June 2016 and again from mid-September and the end of November.

“The Tourist Department has worked shoulder to shoulder with the city’s hoteliers both to promote Almeria in general and to obtain agreements like this one,” said Councillor Lola de Haro.

Breaking with the seasonal nature of summer tourism was another of City Hall’s aims in making a deal of this

type, De Haro added, as it took advantage of Almeria’s climate and the quality of its infrastructure.

Thirteen former ambassadors have warned that billions of pounds in trade deals and millions of jobs are at risk if Britain leaves the EU. In a letter to The Sunday Times on November 1, they said those who want to leave have ‘no credibility’ and are ‘naive’ if they think Britain will be able to quickly strike a better free trade deal with the EU, or new ones with countries such as America and China.

The letter was arranged by Lord Hannay of Chiswick, former ambassador to the UN, and Lord Kerr of Kinlochard, former ambassador to America and the EU. In fact, Lord Hannay and Baroness Sue Miller were

Huercal’s travelling tree of life THE Tree of Life is Huercal-Overa’s emblem.

The outlined symbol was found during restoration at the 14th century Castillo and is, according to archaeologists, one of the few examples of the ancient image yet discovered in the Iberian peninsula.

For the past three years the town hall has held a photography competition entitled ‘The Tree of Life in My Luggage.’ Each year it features Huercal residents wearing a t-shirt with the local emblem wherever they might be living, working, studying or holidaying in the world.

This year’s entries, which were taken in Northern Ireland, Manhattan, Warsaw, Costa Rica and Galicia amongst other places, have now been uploaded to the Castillo de Huercal-Overa Facebook page.

Still no let-up in coastal surveillance by police GUARDIA CIVIL has been involved in a five month operation

By Linda Hall OPERACION INDALO 2015, now concluded, intercepted 3,343 illegal immigrants at sea and seized 23,096 kilos of hashish.

Maritime action was carried out by Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Iceland and Finland although police forces in Romania, Switzerland, Belgium, Poland and Norway also participated.

The operation was funded

by Frontex, the European Union’s frontiers agency.

Indalo 2015’s principal aim was to coordinate effective police control at sea and in the air to prevent people-

Led and coordinated by the Guardia Civil off the coast of Almeria, Malaga, Granada, Algeciras and Murcia, the operation began on June 1 and ended on October 31.

The Guardia Civil impounded 269 boats and arrested 21 people traffickers, making a further 27 arrests for drugs-related offences.

The Moroccans and Algerians contributed fruitfully to the operation, said the Guardia Civil: “They are ful-

ly involved in combating illegal immigration, activating established protocols and exchanging information. In fact Morocco rescued 1,413 immigrants during Operacion Indalo and Algeria another 20.”

Operacion Indalo also included a month-long opportunity within the Closeye Project framework, testing new technology and the efficacy of drones in frontier surveillance, the Guardia Civil revealed.

Residents can have their say in Nijar NIJAR Council approved a motion allowing residents to air their views on municipal affairs.

Until now intervention by members of the public during plenary council meetings was permitt ed ei t her at t he discretion of the mayor or when they were given the chance to speak by one of the political parties.

From now on residents will be entitled to speak for five minutes during pl enar y m eet i ngs al t hough t hey wi l l be obliged not to stray from the matter under discussion.

The agenda wi l l be published a week beforehand and those wishing to speak must register in order to take part.

“A Questions and Answers session was one of our commitments to residents,” said Nijar Mayor Esper anza Per ez. We want t hi s i ni t i at i ve t o have the backing of all political groups so that it carries real weight,” she explained.

Once appr oved, t he new r egul at i ons wi l l make provision for the right to introduce a popular or citizens’ initiative when accom pani ed by the signatures of 15 per cent of the voting public.

In Nijar, which has a population of approxim at el y 30,000 and around 15,000 potential voters, some 2,500 signatures would be sufficient to introduce a proposal at a pl enar y meeting.

This could then be debat ed and ei t her approved or rejected.

Almeria is Andalucia’s most expensive province ALMERIA Province prices jumped by 1 per cent in October, four percentage points above the national average.

The rise was general throughout Andalucia although Almeria’s increase was the most noticeable, while Malaga’s 0.5 per cent was the lowest in Andalucia.

“These figures show the decline in families’ purchasing power,” said Felix Lopez, secretary general of the UGT union in Almeria.

Disappearance of man in El Ejido solved FIVE people were arrested in connection with the death of El Ejido man who disappeared a year ago.

Three are accused of his murder and are now remanded while two more are charged with offences linked to the crime.

His body was located recently in a shallow grave in an inaccessible area of Berja, concluding an investigation that began in September last year after the dead man’s family reported him missing.

Circumstances suggested that his disappearance was not voluntary and they feared that he could have been murdered, revealed Jose Maria Angel, head of El Ejido’s Policia Judicial investigation unit.

The last time they saw him he confided that he was afraid something might happen to him and was accompanied by a friend who had problems with a drugs stash. He was asked to hide 500 kilos of hashish in a shed but it had disappeared a month earlier, he said.

Suspicion immediately fell on certain people with police records but carrying out an investigation like this was complicated.

“In a town where so many people know each, they possibly knew the killers, too,” Angel said Spain’s Central Homicide Section, headed by Chief Inspector Carmen Pastor, was also involved in the case. This section helped to clear up the double murder of two young women in Cuenca

last August as well as the American pilgrim murdered on her way to Santiago de Compostela.

Pastor’s 25-strong team has a reputation for being tenacious. Not only does it ‘never give up a case’ but it has solved some crimes that go back 10 years.

It was necessary to work in silence and a year later their investigations led to the arrest of three men, one of them the friend who had accompanied the dead man on the last day he was seen. All are Spanish, all are violent and all allegedly belong to a drugs trafficking group.

Once at the police station, one man admitted his guilt and led the police to where the body was buried.

Sevilla lawyer to head the Podemos list ALMERIA party members disappointed with decision

The answer is Sevilla, to the disappointment of Almeria supporters of the political party led by Pablo Iglesias.

The regional and national executive’s approval of lawyer David Bravo Bueno has already come in for criticism although the local Podemos hierarchy hastened to clarify

that there is no hint of ‘imposition’.

“I don’t know Almeria very well but I don’t think this need be a drawback to being a member of parliament,” the candidate told a Spanish interviewer.

Bravo Bueno also said that he believed he was fully qualified to represent the province: “From the moment I decided to come to Almeria I knew I was taking on a commitment. If I can’t meet it, then I will g o a n d re turn to my ow n a c tivitie s ,” he pledged.

Enraged patient hits out at doctor who kept him waiting A 22-YEAR-OLD A&E patient with a toothache attacked a Torrecardenas doctor because he was kept waiting for 20 minutes.

He was “aggressive and defiant” as he entered the consulting room, the emergency

doctor said afterwards.

“He started to insult the doctor,” hospital witnesses told the local Spanish media afterwards. The young man then struck the doctor and went to kick him but kicked the table leg instead. At this

point a security guard restrained him. The patient continued to shout. “I’ll come looking for you and you won’t know what’s hit you when I find you,” he threatened.

National Police were called and arrested him.

THE massacre in Paris perpetrated by what seems to be a highly professional and ruthless group of terrorists, prepared to die for their cause, whatever it is, has possibly signalled the end of Europe’s open-border policy.

The tragedy overshadowed the conference in Malta which was intended to deal with the growing problem of massive illegal immigration from Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

It is still unclear whether the terrorists joined the thousands of migrants from Turkey or Libya to infiltrate Western Europe, or are what has become described as ‘home-grown’ terrorists. But we have to face the fact that the world is becoming more precarious with Islamic groups seeking to vent their anger at the West with increasingly violent actions.

France has Europe’s largest Muslim population with five million people mainly of North African origin. Yet the majority, now second or third generation, still live in the poorest suburbs in segregated communities, unwilling or unable to join mainstream French society. Successive governments have to bear some responsibility for a lack of integration programmes and discrimination but it is also due to restrictive Islamic laws and culture, which make the western lifestyle so hard to accept for Muslims who follow their faith. Many disillusioned young people are an easy target for radical Islamic groups.

With a global population reaching eight billion people, of whom the vast majority live in poverty or in countries racked by conflict in an ever more interconnected planet, Europe’s immigration policies need rethinking. Demographics may suggest that the western democracies need immigrants, but it is becoming increasingly apparent that Western Europe cannot cope with an influx of millions of refugees or illegal immigrants from Africa, the Middle East and Asia with totally different cultures, laws and traditions. Angela Merkel, who with David Cameron admitted that the multicultural society does not work, has opened up a Pandora’s box with her invitation to welcome millions of migrants and the deep divisions she has caused within the European Union, have threatened its very survival. Britain must now consider the introduction of ID cards not on-

ly to facilitate identifying illegal immigrants and potential terrorists but to protect the population.

Providing humanitarian assistance is a longstanding European tradition. It is natural to offer temporary right of abode to genuine refugees until it is safe for them to return to their own countries.

But today’s illegal economic migrants, including refugees, are not seeking charity but expecting to remain forever with passports, nationality, homes and jobs. And if the migrants and their families

cannot go where they want to go, instead of being grateful, they revolt. In addition most of the current wave of immigrants tends to be of Muslim origin, which poses the problem of integration as well as the threat of more terrorist attacks.

The world is now facing a major conflict with Islamic State (IS) and to try to prevent this scenario we need more involvement from the United Nations and co-operation among the rich countries. There has to be a consensus to work togeth-

er to help the poor nations eradicate corruption, armed conflicts, the exploitation of resources and, where possible, remove despotic regimes in order to encourage education and economic development, and improve the standard of living of the population. This may be difficult to achieve in an ever more volatile and precarious world, but there can be no peace, stability or prosperity without a redistribution of the world’s resources and the elimination of gross inequality and poverty.

The beach is popular with walkers, with or without dogs, but litter and discarded fishhooks in the sand are a constant risk. The decision to clear away accumulated rubbish was prompted by Willow, a dog that needed emergency surgery after swallowing one of the hooks.

The clear-up was pronounced a success and the organisers are already considering more sessions in the future. Equinac, the association which is officially authorised to rescue marine wildlife in Almeria Province, has offered to publicise this activity and encourage more people to follow the Mojacar residents’ example.

Herbal remedy was not exactly a pick-me-up NINETEEN people were detained in a swoop on unauthorised impotency remedies.

Eight people were arrested in Almeria Province, with further arrests in Malaga, Granada, Cadiz, Sevilla, Alicante,

Barcelona and Madrid.

The pills were marketed as a dietary and vitamin supplement in order to dodge controls by Spain’s official Medication and Health Products Agency (AEMPS).

During the operation - aptly codenamed ‘Loves’ investigators targeted health food shops, parapharmacies, wholesalers, suppliers and a production plant in Barcelona.

They found and confiscated stocks of the impotency cure worth €20,000, Guardia Civil sources revealed later.

The pills came to the attention of the Guardia Civil during an international crackdown on illicit medication coordinated by Interpol. During subsequent inspections they came across the impotency pills and sent samples to AEMPS for analysis where they were found to contain ingredients not listed on their packaging.

This triggered a national alert and the Guardia Civil operation.

tion. Instead the changes affecting the way in which almost 500 primary care nurses and more than 2,000 others in hospitals and residences will set the profession back 40 years, both bodies predicted.

The existing system in Andalucia with its prescription policies will come to nothing and patients will be the biggest

losers, the College of Nursing and Satse warned.

Nurses will not be able to work as they do now, foresaw Jose Gonzalez, Satse spokesman for Almeria Province, who cited vaccinations, administering oxytocin during labour, applying medicated dressings or care of chronic patients.

Apafa is a support group for the parents, families and friends of those with learning difficulties in the north of Almeria Province.

They are fleeing from an entrenched armed conflict whose end in not in sight in the near future, Diaz added.

Bogus nobleman’s ‘absurd’ Almeria sting

By Linda Hall A PHONY Italian nobleman tricked an Almeria businessman in a scam which he himself described as ‘absurd’.

The Supreme Court rejected the Italian’s appeal against a three-year prison sentence for swindling €500,000. He

was also ordered to return the defrauded cash.

The Italian, who called himself Angelo and claimed to have a title, told his victim that he possessed a large fortune but needed to change €500 banknotes for smaller denominations, offering a 10 per cent commission. The

businessman accepted and received €11,000 in €500 notes in return for €10,000 in smaller notes. He later agreed to exchange €500,000 for €1,500,000.

Angelo, an accomplice and the businessman met in an Almeria City hotel room to carry out the transaction. On his arrival Angelo and Mario showed him a large pedestal table with two drawers, one full of €500 notes and the other empty. The businessman, who had a machine to count notes and detect counterfeits, duly counted each wad of cash taken from the full drawer. This then went into the second drawer without his realising that he was repeatedly counting the same

Angelo was detained at the French border two days later, carrying €232,750.

More ferries to Nador SHIPPING line Armas will start operating an AlmeriaNador (Morocco) ferry before the end of the month.

The company already sails from Huelva and Motril (Granada) where it also acts as agent for Logistica LopezGuillen which is based in Almeria Port. Initially there will be a daily ferry each way, carrying passengers and merchandise.

Armas has already sent one of its ships to the port where it has been testing docking manoeuvres.

It will now be competing with Accion Transmediterranea, at present the only shipping line operating between Almeria and North Africa.

Almeria’s Port Authority announced last May that one, and possibly two, new passenger and cargo lines would arrive this year to create more competition.

Squatter evicted from mansion HE enjoyed free electricity and water

By Eleanor Hawkins FOLLOWING nine years of struggles, a squatter has finally been evicted from Casa Siret in Las Herrerias, Cuevas del Almanzora.

The man, originally from Oviedo, had been holed up in the mansion which belonged to

Belgian archaeologist and engineer Luis Siret surrounded by African palms and vegetable gardens and had not only not paid any rent to live in the building, which belongs to the Culture Department, but also enjoyed free electricity and water until the authorities eventually cut supply off.

Although the department started procedures to have him removed from the property, which it intended to put to use as a cultural and educational centre, he smartly avoided this through various appeals and by failing to appear to testify.

Now the authorities have finally managed to get him out.

FISHERMEN: Need better security to avoid thefts affecting their work.

PETTY theft is making life a misery for Almeria’s fishing port, AOPESCA association leader Mari Angeles Cayuela has complained on Cadena Ser radio.

Almost every day, she said, boats suffer thefts which are meaning they are unable to head out to sea and earn a living.

The situation was reported to port authority head Trinidad Cabeo a few weeks ago, and fishermen and women are asking for more surveillance and security measures to be put into place.

Although Cabeo had promised new CCTV cameras and other measures, they have yet to appear, Cayuela reported.

Carboneras means ‘coal’ ENDESA electrical giant has chosen Carboneras as the new location for its main reception and redistribution centre for the coal its power stations in Spain use.

This was done in Tarragona in the past, but now the company has decided to move operations to the Endesa-Pucarsa owned port in Carboneras and will be investing €15 million in the project.

Trinidad Cabeo, head of the port authority, reported that goods traffic to Carboneras Port was already on the up and said this in-

vestment and activity will serve to increase growth even more.

Endesa is also currently preparing an ambitious modernisation project at its centre in Carboneras to adapt it to EU environmental guidelines, which will provide work for hundreds of locals.

Although initially the village earned its name from its first inhabitants’ fondness for making charcoal, Carboneras looks set to see its name make even more sense as the company’s Spanish coal centre.

Alcoholism is on the rise FAR from becoming a thing of the past, alcoholism is on the up and affecting people from earlier ages, ARA alcoholics association in Almeria has reported.

This year, the association has attended 254 people, 229 of them male, ARA president Jose Salvadero announced last week

before the presentation of an Alcohol-Free Day event held in Almeria City on Saturday (November 14).

Other associations and the authorities also registered increasing numbers and the most worrying were reports of teenagers as young as 14 need-

ing treatment after serious drinking sessions.

Alcohol-Free Day was held to raise more awareness on the dangers of excessive or premature drinking, with Paseo de Almeria closed to traffic all afternoon on Saturday to host events, exhibitions and talks.

cal ambience and charm of the village.

In recent years, the town council has increased its efforts to celebrate these important dates by investing in equipment, infrastructure and facilities in order to upgrade and expand.

Most will be in the beauty, cosmetics, perfume, luxury goods, electronics and the toy sector, said the Adecco employ-

As well as the retail industry there will be work in logistics and transport, customer care, hospitality and hotel trades as well as the indirect employment that will be generated over the holiday season.

Adecca foresees a total of 83,000 jobs throughout Andalucia, 15 per cent more than last Christmas.

Contracts will also cover longer periods, the agency revealed, beginning in November and continuing into January and the winter sales.

Bogus crime reports ALMERIA National Police recently charged four people for reporting non-existent crimes over the same 24-hour period Investigations of the alleged offences immediately revealed that their claims of having been mugged were false. No evidence could be found that the crimes ever occurred, police sources said.

In each case the supposed victim had lost money, documentation or a mobile phone and reported this in order to claim on their insurance, they added.

Following up non-existent claims takes up police time and resources and diverts them from investigating genuine offences with real victims, the National Police said.

Judge shelves case after suspect dies MEN allegedly attacked a group on a dinghy

By Eleanor Hawkins AN Almeria judge has shelved a case against one of two men believed to be responsible for the deaths of 21 migrants, including seven babies, during a fated crossing from Morocco in December as he has died.

The two men, from Cameroon, were arrested and sent to El Acebuche provincial penitentiary centre a month after the dinghy, with 29 survivors on board, was rescued from the sea more than 24 hours after setting off from Nador.

Terrified witnesses told the police that the two men had attacked a group of Nigerians on the dinghy after a pastor began urging everyone to pray when they hit a storm at sea.

The men, they said, pulled planks from the bottom of the dinghy and hit the group then pushed them overboard after emptying their pockets.

Now, one of the two has died at Torrecardenas hospital in Almeria City, leading Judge Jesus Miguel Hernandez to shelve the case against the deceased while maintaining the one against the other suspect.

No patrol for local farms ADRA farmers are going to have to wait for a promised exclusive Local Police patrol to protect their greenhouses.

Although a motion was approved at a council plenary session in August to create an

exclusive rural patrol in an attempt to crack down on thefts on farms, the council has now had to shelve the project following protests from CSIF trades union.

British music is still alive and bringing in the money THE music trade body UK Music has released figures showing that the British music industry contributed £4.1 billion (€5.7 billion) to the UK economy in 2014.

The main increases are from royalties earned by musicians, composers and lyricists, which rose 11 per cent to £1.9 billion (€2.6 billion) and live music sales, which jumped 17 per cent to £924 million (€1.3 billion).

British artists were responsible for one in seven albums sold around the world in 2014, with Coldplay, One Direction, Pink Floyd, Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith all making the top 10 list of the year’s best-selling albums ably assisted by many other British performers.

It means that Britain is now the second-largest provider of recorded music in the world, accounting for 13.7 per cent of global sales.

Mango to wind down in the USA SPANISH fashion chain Mango has announced that it will close 450 sales outlets in the United States early next year, after ending a five-year deal to sell its clothing in J C Penney department stores around the country.

The chain, which is in the same market as similar stores such as Zara and H&M, has decided not to extend its current agreement and will close the outlets in February next year. However it will keep its seven standalone stores and intends to expand in this area within America.

“What the committee has been expecting is that the economy will continue to grow at a pace that is sufficient to generate further improvements in the labour market, and to return inflation to our 2

per cent target over the m e d i u m t e r m , ” Ye l l e n told the Financial Services Committee of the House of Representatives.

A meeting of the Fede r a l R e s e r v e ’s p o l i c y committee in December is the next and final opportunity for any increase to take place this year, after US interest rates have been near zero since December 2008.

to investors, so the heavily hinted possibility of a rise increases demand for the US currency and indeed the dollar strengthened on the news.

There is no absolute commitment at this stage and there is still a month in which to gather information about the s t a t e o f t h e e c o n o m y, but it does seem unlikely that she would have made this comment unless she was fairly certain that the increase was on the cards.

Revenues from recorded music fell by £3 million (€4.2 million) last year, to £615 million (€861 million). UK Music chairman Andy Heath put the blame on download stores and streaming music providers which, he claimed, put a stranglehold on revenues through an ‘unacceptable balance of negotiating power.’

If that could be ‘diluted,’ he added: “the current growth could improve exponentially.”

Commenting on the report, culture secretary John Whittingdale, who perhaps showed his age with his choices, said: “Our artists continue to dominate the global charts - and shows from the Royal Ballet and Rod Stewart to the LSO and Status Quo sell out concerts across the globe. In fact, many people around the world first learn about this country through one of our bands.”

The sun has finally set on the Empire ONCE a major contributor to the economy of the British Empire, since independence in 1947, India has steadily cut its financial ties with the United Kingdom and now, the visit of the Indian Prime Minister to the UK sees the ‘child considering helping the father.’

Once responsible for the development of the Indian infrastructure and economy, Britain is not even in the top 10 trading partners of India and it has taken Narendra Modi 18 months to make his first official visit to Britain.

Prime Minister David Cameron is laying out the red carpet as he hopes to sign trade deals with India, including one for supply of around 20 training aircraft to their air force, and no doubt he will touch upon the problems with Indian investments in steel companies in the UK. British attempts to run businesses in India have not generally been successful although Costa Coffee and Vodafone have bucked that trend.

THERE was a time when a premium was paid on a craftsman’s skill and time taken to make a quality product. The slogan used to be, ‘when you buy cheap you buy dear.’ Experience suggests that craftsmanship and exclusivity of high priced goods have since been hijacked and degraded.

The artful dodgers of marketing latched on to replacing the term craftsman with the designer mantra. Just what is such an ambiguous and ridiculous term to mean, unless to fool the gullible.

It says much when cheap counterfeit goods can’t be told apart from designer label goods selling at many times the price. I have little sympathy for defrauded designer label manufacturers. The swindlers are defrauded by cheats. They do prove the point: ‘A bad product sold well will outsell a good product sold badly.’

How can it be? Other than deception when a brand name shaving kit costs more than a durable electric shaver imported from China. The cutting

Another friend glowed as she showed me the bill presented by a notoriously expensive interior designer. As the saying goes, ‘Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.’

It was an observance deducted from living eight years in an Islamic country, listening to their views and ideals and concluding that, if their fanaticism and utter adherence to the words of the Koran were put into practice - coupled with their oil wealth the outcome was quite simply inevitable.

And did Leapy take some stick! I certainly came to realise a little of how the ultimately ostracised Enoch Powell must have felt. ‘Yet another Leapy rant’ headed so many derisory missives, that frankly it all became a bit of a bore. Well now it’s upon us. Pussyfooting politicians, peace and love pundits and the ever present ‘ostriches’ have now placed us

Thousands will die. Attacks and fighting will prevail in our towns and cities. The infiltrators will take years to flush out and ultimately the blame will once again (thanks a bunch Blair!) lay firmly at the feet of our money-mad, pussyfooting, wind-bagging politicians.

And still we let these people in. I’d love to be a flea on the tent wall as Satan’s army scoff and laugh at the idiocy of the infidel enemy. They must by now believe they can actually win. And ya know something? They could well be right!

We will remember those who fought, but for how long?

REMEMBRANCE services remind us of the nature of real sacrifice and what it means Colin Bird A weekly look Each week, Colin brings his slightly off-thewall view of the world to the pages of EWN in his own irreverent style.

LAST week as always, I watched the television coverage of the Remembrance Sunday parade at the Cenotaph. Then at 11am GMT on the 11th of November, I retired to a quiet corner to offer my silent respects for the fallen.

I do these things because of a genuine desire to show in some small way, my esteem and appreciation.

It serves as a note to myself about the nature of real sacrifice and what it means, but most of all how much each of us owes to those who fought and died for the freedoms we now seem prepared to surrender.

DEEPLY MOVING: Parades show the comrades’ silent dignity and intense pride.

I watch the dwindling number of WW2 survivors make their laboured but proud way along Whitehall, on foot and in wheelchairs, some too infirm to take part but simply watching and remembering from the sidelines. And those who fought

in other 20th century conflicts and indeed continue to do so today.

I feel deeply moved by their silent dignity and sense their intense pride when I see the medals and regimental badges on display. And when I hear the

words from the fourth stanza of Binyon’s famous poem, ‘For the Fallen,’ then please, nobody attempt to speak to me.

As I watch the politicians step forward to lay their wreaths with sombre and, I suspect in many cases, false

expressions of introspection, I feel anger at the injustice of it all. The terrible consequences of these conflicts and the disgraceful lack of compassion that is often the reward for these magnificent people once they have served their purpose.

I reflect on the decline of the morals and standards of our once great country and the dire circumstances we currently find ourselves in.

I mourn the erosion of those freedoms paid for in blood by the very people being remembered today, and the gifting of our sovereign rights to European interests.

Year on year I have the same thought as I remember those millions of their comrades who never returned.

And it is this: They deserve so much more.

We mourn the dead but life goes on AS soon as news of the atrocities in Paris on the evening of November 13 broke, we knew that the original article written for this column would have to be withdrawn and a new piece written.

It was just five days after most of the western world had honoured the dead on Remembrance Sunday when these eight misguided men unleashed terror on the people of Paris. It clearly didn’t matter to them who was caught up in the bloodshed.

Their victims could have been of any colour or creed, young or old; they were just considered ‘collateral damage’ which would teach the west in general and the French in particular to be intimidated by ISIS. As so often happens, the opposite is the case. France and her allies have responded immediately and increased their attacks on ISIS targets. The public have reacted in a way which is perhaps to be expected by showing that whilst horrified and scared, they will continue with their lives and not bow to terror.

What has been a surprise is condemnation of the attacks from a number of unexpected quarters including China, Iran and Saudi Arabia. Russia which was at odds with the west over its actions in Syria has also declared that it will try to co-operate more closely with NATO and the west against ISIS. The world honoured the victims with one-minute silences on November 16.

Life goes on but it will never be the same again. ISIS has gone too far and everybody from every nation has one aim to destroy this cancerous cell of depravity. ISIS will never leave its mark in history provided terrorism is refused on a worldwide basis, the oxygen needed for it to grow or develop.

It may be that you don’t mind celebrity froth being offered up as news by media. However, remember that when three or four blasphemous punk rockers tore off their tops to protest in Moscow at Putin’s Russia, it became headline news throughout the western world.

The political elite were startled when three prominent parliamentarians supported a massive anti-immigrant rally in Bologna. Massive rallies are taking place against the invasion of Europe by refugees.

These refugees have no love for those they hold responsible for destroying their countries.

Italy, Slovakia, Spain, Finland, Greece, Poland and France and other EU states are all hotbeds of antirefugee protests. You might reflect, if MSM is not covering these protests what else are we not being told?

Balanegra flies the flag BALANEGRA, a town in its own right since June, now has a coat of arms and flag. It is Almeria Province’s 103rd municipality but Balanegra (population 2,835) had been part of Berja since the 16th century.

If Britons have no right to vote then they shouldn’t pay taxes Re: Why is Great Britain no longer great?

WHERE to start. Over 2,000 years ago, the Roman Empire, which ran most of the world, made a good ruling, ‘no representation –no taxation.’

No vote – no tax. That ruling is still written into many countries’ constitutions today.

Britain even helps some countries to achieve this democratic status. But British citizens who work and live inside the EU, which really runs Britain, after 12 years are disallowed the vote.

But then the EU also made a good ruling, any Brit cannot be discriminated against within the EU by another member country, so the UK commits an offence by denying us 12-year Brits the vote. Also, Iain ‘powerdrunken’ Smith steals our winter fuel allowance which the EU says we are fully entitled to; after all, most of us in Spain live in ‘Jerry-built’ homes.

How would the Suffragette movement have dealt with this? Another point comes to mind, what about the scum in our British nicks, should they also get the vote? After all, it does cost us £32,000 a year to keep them ‘cosy’ inside. The once Empress of Europe ‘Magee T’ was some time ago told that all governments throughout the world do not have any money, it all belongs to ‘the people’.

So what about what happened in Spain a short while ago? The Spanish Government, which we are not allowed to vote for, gave €60 billion of our money to the Spanish banks to stop them going bankrupt. Leapy, can you please point us in the right direction to the system of where we collect the Spanish bank shares that we are due?

Before you ask ‘why are you here in Spain?’, we left the southeast of England some 12 years ago, to get away from the 35,000 who die of the weather and another 24,000 who die of air pollution caused by stinking diesels each year. Also we were a bit peed-off with highly-educated schoolboys who have never worked for a living and who don’t know their rear-end from their elbow, and have at last run the once great country into the ground.

To my mind we should not have to pay the UK or Spain any taxation at all; again, no vote– no tax, it’s undemocratic.

Brexit ban undemocratic Re: Downing Street Brexit Petition I am one of those who has lived outside the UK for 15 years. I have no vote in the general elections in my country of residence (Spain). Yet, I have paid, over many years, taxes to both Spain and the UK, as I have a rental property in London. Peace talks?

I AM afraid that Father Carrasco has a lot to learn about Muslim beliefs. If he thinks for one minute that the Muslims will sit down and talk about peace between Christians and Muslims, he is sadly mistaken.

Their core belief is that there is no other god than Allah and no amount of kind words will change that.

I am a Norwegian, and I give you one example from Norway. Some few weeks ago our Finance Minister announced that we shall pay 2 per cent less tax as from 2016. This week our Prime Minister announced that there would be no tax reduction, because the ‘refugees’ would cost NOK 9 billion (€96 million) more than anticipated!!!

THEY’RE at it again! Yes, I can only be referring to the for- and againstbullfighting lobbies here in Spain.

Well, I’m with the pro-bullfighting lobby on this one. I’m not going to repeat the arguments, just saying that the world would be a poorer, duller place without it.

As long as the animal products are nicely packaged, we’re happy to believe they all had a beautiful life on a farm somewhere and died a ‘humane’ death. This, of course, couldn’t be further from the harsh reality.

Four to seven years roaming the countryside, or one to two in a battery farm and then ending up in an abattoir. I know which one I’d go for.

Granted, the last 20 minutes of their

lives are pretty cruel but their quality of life, overall, is so much better than those millions of industrially-raised and kept animals consumed and exploited every day.

As for ‘killing for food vs killing for fun’, after each ‘corrida’, their meat is given to the poor. That’s part of the tradition. Unless someone is a die-hard vegan and doesn’t use any animal products (which, in our society, is fairly impossible), it’s hard to mount a credible attack on bullfighting in the 21st century. Buy one get one free is discount nonsense Mike Senker

In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man BOGOF. Everyone loves a BOGOF which is the great idea of buy one get one free. How simple is that? In theory sure, but in real life it gets so complicated because companies were not happy with just doing what it says on the tin. The whole discount thing is now nonsense.

I’m writing this from the USA. When I checked into my hotel (where, of course, I went straight to the third room first) they gave me a little book of vouchers to use. I have now checked out of hotel with my voucher book virginity intact.

That’s not because I didn’t want to use them, but the free drink was for a beer or glass of house wine and they wouldn’t let me have diet coke or coffee instead, even though I explained I am teetotal.

The $25 voucher for the slot machine didn’t apply to me as it was only for new

frequent player card sign ups, and silly me I have had mine for five years!! The free meal was for the person with you (cheapest one free). I was on my own so that was no good! Mind you I could have invited in one of the homeless people that were hanging about nearly everywhere I went outside. Definitely going to do that next time!

Then I went shopping and there the fun begins. If you buy two pairs of Levis you get the third pair for half price. I don’t want three I want two. Yes, I know what you’re saying ‘just buy two’. And I did but instead of feeling good about shopping there I felt a little bit cheated so it’s not a good experience.

It’s the same here in Spain. All day every day I hear an advert for an insurance company offering amazing discounts. How does the advert end? By them saying it’s only for new customers!!! I’ve been with the company for 11 years and mine goes UP every bloody year!! I’ve asked them about it and have been told it’s ‘company policy’.

So my message to all companies is either give me something or don’t ...but don’t keep doing all this smart a**e BS.

New electronic ITV certificates AS part of a new series, we answer some common driving questions, kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers.

PAPER VERSION: If you have this document, you must carry it in your vehicle.

FROM this week, new vehicles registered in Spain will have a new, electronic version of the technical characteristics ITV document, rather than the traditional paper or card version.

The new ‘tarjeta electrónica de características técnicas’ (eITV) will automatically be issued with the vehicle for all newly registered cars, vans and trucks from now on. All previously registered vehicles will continue to use the paper and card documentation.

The DGT has already implemented a system in which manufacturers, importers and vehicle sales companies can submit the registration information by electronic means, which can be accessed and checked by officials.

Once checked and validated, the DGT will store the information in an electronic register, the Registro de Vehículos Prematriculados, which in turn issues the vehicle

identification number, the Número de Identificación del Vehículo (NIVE), which then becomes the unique identifier for that vehicle.

The DGT will then assign the registration number of the vehicle and issue the Tarjeta de Inspección Técnica, or technical inspection card, in electronic form only, which can be accessed online.

The vast majority of vehicle manufacturers are already integrated into the project and in October, nearly 50 per cent of registered vehicles were already equipped with electronic tokens.

As of May 11, 2016, this type of electronic card will also be issued for mopeds, motorcycles, tricycles and quads.

Remember though, this is only for newly registered vehicles. If your vehicle has the paper version, you must carry this document with you in the vehicle.

In the president’s report and budget prior to our upcoming AGM there are several points I question. The president states that legal proceedings will commence for debt recovery from delinquent owners for which we are charged more than €1,500 per case. This is a lot of money.

Perhaps we should seek other bids. In all, our Community budget is almost 1.5 million In debt recovery, my sources suggest you can get a much better deal than €1,500 per case. Yes, it is most unusual to apportion expenses by catastral values. The law says that the coeffi-

Could TV be making you depressed?

WATCHING more than two hours of TV a day could be making you depressed.

A study has found that watching too much television is linked with higher levels of de-

pression, anxiety and stress.

As part of the study, researchers in America asked 406 people to make a note of how much television they watched, and how they felt afterwards.

Around 77 per cent watched more than two hours a day, while 35 per cent watched far more.

People who watched more reported suffering from sleep disorders and higher levels of depression and stress, although researchers said it was unclear if being unhappy and stressed leads people to binge watch, or if watching a lot of TV leads to the depression.

Meanwhile, researchers at the National Cancer Institute in Michigan, USA, found that those who watch more than 3.5 hours of TV a day are not only at risk of cancer and heart disease, commonly associated with an inactive lifestyle, but also diabetes, pneumonia, Parkinson’s and liver disease.

This week, we asked the doctor about a subject many women of a certain age and their partners tend to have doubts about: menopause.

WHAT is the menopause and when does it happen?

The menopause is the moment when menstruation stops due to a drop in levels of female hormones.

It’s a natural stage which usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 50.

How does it start? What are the first symptoms?

In the beginning, periods start to become irregular and women may notice dizziness, hot flushes, palpitations, forgetfulness, slight incontinence problems, painful joints, insomnia and intercourse can become painful due to increase vaginal dryness.

Emotional changes are common such as irritability, depression or anxiety.

Osteoporosis can develop over time which weakens bones and can put women at risk of fractures.

Can hot flushes be avoided?

To try and reduce hot flushes women can start by changing their diet, avoiding caffeine, alcohol and spicy food, getting regular exercise and using relaxation techniques such as yoga. If this doesn’t work, medication such as anti-

depressants or hormone replacement therapy can be tried.

Is taking pills really necessary?

It’s true many women take pills during the menopause. As a general rule they are not prescribed as they have sideeffects, and are saved for certain cases.

My mother-in-law says drinking soya bean milk is good. Is she right or is that an old wives’ tale?

Recent studies have proved it to be true. Soya beans appear to calm menopause symptoms as they contain oestrogen.

Do menopausal women need to take extra care?

Women should carry on as normal but bear in mind they need to take extra care of their bones. Along with diet changes, they should avoid cholesterol, sugar and salt. If they are heavy they should try to lose some weight.

All women going through the menopause should have tests done to check their hearts and see a specialist in internal medicine and a gynaecologist.

DO you remember when you were a child and your body was able to contort into almost any shape you decided to make?

Young bodies are so pliable and it can be hard to believe now as an adult some of the sporty fitness activities you were able to perform so easily as a child.

As we get older the body takes on more stress, both physical and mental, and unfortunately our muscles become tighter, shorter and less pliable.

People that do manual labour work such as construction workers tend to keep a stronger physical structure due to the heavy demands of their job. Others that work in offices and are constantly sat on computers will find their muscles will shorten over time, creating physical

imbalance and discomfort.

Unless this is managed with regular effective exercise and stretching you will most certainly be relying on medication to ease back or neck pain that could possibly be remedied from efficient progressive stretching.

I have successfully fixed many clients back problems over the years without the aid of one single painkiller tablet, simply by giving them the correct exercises to strengthen the weak area, and effective stretches to relieve the tightness. It is possible to relieve someone’s painful lower back by simply stretching out their shortened hamstrings.

Upper body can also be an issue.

Clients that have previously trained in gyms have, due to poor technique or lack of care from the trainer, over engaged the trapezius muscle in the upper back. This is the muscle that you feel when you shrug your shoulders. Incorrect technique when performing many upper body exercises can cause the

trapezius to take over.

A simple stretch to ease tightness in this area would be to stand up straight, clasp your hands tightly behind your back, stick your chest out and drop your shoulders right down until you feel as though your shoulder blades are about to meet at the back. This is a very simple but effective stretch.

Another progression on this stretch would be to lie back over a stability ball and put your arms up over your head and relax, this again allows the muscles in the upper back to stretch effectively.

All of your stretches should be done post workout, or if for rehabilitation after at least five minutes of mobility moves. You must never perform stretches on cold muscles. Muscles need to be warm and pliable, otherwise you risk causing injury.

Think of your muscles like a piece of Blu-Tack straight out of the packet, pull it apart and it will break, roll it around in your hand for a minute or so and it becomes pliable enough to stretch.

Diet drinks can help with weight loss A STUDY has claimed that diet fizzy drinks really do help with weight loss.

Drinks, such as diet cola, are often criticised for simply replacing sugar with other sweeteners, but researchers say the use of low energy sweeteners, instead of the sugar in original versions of the drinks, does lead to a reduced calorie intake.

The new findings were the result of a review led by scientists at the University of Bristol, which showed sweetened drinks did not increase appetite. These sweeteners included in the study were aspartame (found in Diet Coke), Stevia (found in some versions of Sprite and Coke Lite), saccharin, and sucralose (found in some versions of Diet Pepsi).

The researchers found there was ‘a considerable weight of evidence’ confirming that consuming sweeteners instead of sugar helps reduce relative energy intake and body weight.

Nijar Day Centre helps San Isidro nuns A TWO-WEEK donations campaign at Nijar ’s Day Centre resulted in 250 kilos of non-perishable food and 30 kilos of clothing.

These have now been collected by nuns from the Mercedarias de la Caridad order.

The Sisters distribute food in San Isidro on almost a daily basis amongst

the needy from premises adjoining the Social Services building.

Painter caught for burglary

Alleged arsonist arrested after 27 farmland fires

A PAINTER from Albox has been arrested for allegedly burgling a home in Fines he had been employed to paint.

The owner reported that his home had been burgled and €2,400 worth of electronic goods, a mobile phone and more than €4,400 worth of jewellery stolen and €2,000 worth of damage caused.

A bank book was also stolen and €600 withdrawn from the account in Albox on the day of the burglary and another €600 from Olula del Rio the follow-

ing day, the police reported.

Guardia Civil officers noted that no doors or windows had been forced and began to investigate people the owner knew, discovering that the home had recently been painted and the painter, a 30-yearold man from Albox, given copies of keys to do the job.

After finding the stolen phone in Almeria City and arresting the man who claimed to own it for allegedly receiving stolen goods, the officers arrested the painter.

Training for employment TWELVE women from Seron have taken part in training courses provided by Almeria Provincial Council to teach them how to preserve vegetables.

The aim of the course, provincial Equality delegate Dolores Martinez explained after awarding the women with diplomas, is to improve their chances of finding work through training and professional recycling and also encourage self-employment initiatives.

During 100 hours of classes in May and June the women studied methods, hygiene, equipment and various other aspects.

By Eleanor Hawkins A MAN has been arrested in Fines suspected of intentionally starting almost 30 fires on farmland in the area.

The 45-year-old suspect with initials JAQR was arrested by the Guardia Civil after discreet surveillance operations led to him being spotted just after a fire broke out in the La Atalaya area.

Investigations were carried out jointly by the Guardia Civil, Fines Local Police and the Junta de Andalucia regional government’s forest fire investigation brigade following 27 recent fires.

Luckily quick work on the part of Infoca forest firefighting and prevention teams and Albox fire brigade meant not much land was affected by the blazes, although in some cases electricity and telephone cables were burnt.

The alleged arsonist has been handed over to the Purchena courts.

Drug group’s premises discovered

By Eleanor Hawkins NINE people have been arrested and 2,010 kilos of hashish confiscated in a National Police operation to break up an organised drugtrafficking group with premises in Albox.

The group, the police reported, brought the drugs from Malaga to Albox, where it was split into small packets and vacuum sealed before sending it on to Murcia for dispatch to central European cities.

The haul would have raised more than €3 million on the international black market and the arrestees, the police force said in a note, all had previous records for similar crimes.

The six men and three women, all Spanish and from Albox, Granada and Puerto Lumbreras, face charges of crimes against public health and belonging to a criminal organisation.

Suspended sentence for former mayor CHANGED land regulations to benefit his brother

By Eleanor Hawkins JOSE GONZALEZ, former mayor of Partaloa, is to be given a one year suspended jail sentence for faking official documents and changing land regulations to benefit his brother.

Almeria Provincial Court will also be banning him from public office and fining him €3 per

day for three months for the offence, which he has agreed to after the Public Prosecutor’s Office reduced its initial requests of a five year jail sentence and six year ban.

The former mayor has been found guilty of drawing up fake reports to allow building on land in the Cerro de la Cruz area where he knew full well construction was not authorised.

No computers for Purchena residents ISABEL MARIA SANCHEZ, Partido Popular spokeswoman at Purchena Town Hall, has written to the mayor to ask him to explain why the Guadalinfo centre has been closed for more than a month, leaving locals unable to use its services.

Sanchez has complained that the centre and its computers are used by many children and

adults on a daily basis but suddenly, for no apparent reason and with no explanations given, the doors were locked.

She claimed the situation was unusual as the centre provides a popular service and said locals hope the mayor will soon explain what is happening and when the centre will reopen.

Collection for Saharan flood victims ARBOLEAS Council has decided to run a food and medicine collection for people in the African Sahara who have lost everything in recent floods and has urged local residents to make donations.

Non-perishable foodstuffs and medicines can be taken to the town hall, and will later be delivered to the area by the Amigos del Sahara (Friends of the Sahara) Assocation, explained Mayor Cristobal Garcia, who has asked everyone who can to help out.

Better barracks ACCESS to Purchena’s Guardia Civil barracks is being improved as part of work under the PFEA rural employment plan.

PFEA delegate Guillermo Casquet has been on a visit to the barracks to inspect the work which is currently being carried out.

Accompanied by Purchena barracks head Jose Hurtado and Captain Isidro Sanchez, head of the IV Company of Huercal Overa, Casquet explained that the work is aimed to provide access for the disabled and people with mobility issues to the barracks.

The project, with a budget of €23,277, also includes adapting the bathroom for disabled use and improvements to wood and paintwork.

The delegate explained that Guardia Civil barracks are new recipients of work under the PFEA, which will help the force improve its services to the public.

By Eleanor Hawkins FOLLOWING complaints last week from Albox Council about a no parking sign put up outside the offices of the Almanzora-Levante-Los Velez Rubbish Consortium, the president has said he is considering moving the offices elsewhere.

Antonio Martinez Pascual, head of the consortium, said: “I’m thinking of moving the offices to another village where we are not under continual attack and the mayor is open to discussion and doesn’t take everything out of context.”

The outburst came after reports on an allegedly illegal parking sign went up outside the offices.

The mayor ended saying that the strong support for the local act, called at the last minute, was proof of the solidarity of the people of Albox.

I AM just back from a talking tour, and what better than being able to report on a great new idea from my travels.

During travels to give talks to the Costa Blanca Gardening Circle in the Amanzora Valley, Gardening Club and the Axarquia Gardening Club it was very evident that many expats were living in properties with steeply sloping gardens. They were concerned about what to plant to reduce, or hopefully totally stop, soil erosion during heavy rain, especially gota frias.

At the first two talks we discussed the repairing or building of terrace walls, stabilising earth walls, planting deep rooted ground cover plants, heavy mulching, and developing a system of sloping paths with inner earth walls held back with one, two or three thick tree trunks or straight branches.

But then by chance Anne and David Olson kindly picked me up from Malaga airport to drive to Competa for the third talk, and immediately told me about a wonder plant that they had used to solve severe access and corrosion problems on their steeply sloping plot of land.

En route we visited their garden to see the benefits of the plant Vetiver,

Chrysopogon and Zizanioidea variety Monto, in their own and surrounding gardens and the way they were now growing and harvesting young plantlets or slips for sale.

I was amazed and wished that someone had introduced the plant to Spain many years ago. They had only done some five years before.

Vetiver has many uses on sloping and terraced land, the

repair of agricultural water ways, in containers on terraces, surrounding ponds and lakes etc.

I came home with a few plants to use in my garden and gardens of friends with immediate needs. My plants

are being used to hide the green painted back wall of my paella kitchen, as a decorative feature on my largest raised terrace and as a feature in a new water garden that I am developing.

Two friends are planting them to block out an unattractive view beyond the garden and stabilise an earth bank surrounding two sides of a horse paddock.

Incidentally the grass cut and dried is a good food for horse and rabbits.

Now a little more about the plant itself.

Vetiver is originally from India and is related to lemon grass. It is an attractive green and grows in clumps up to 1.5 metres high, with vertical roots going down up to two or three metres into the ground, hence its stabilising properties and need for little watering after the first three months.

Little fertilising is required but a dilute grass type liquid fertiliser and fire ashes are of benefit.

Its upper growth with a grass like tuft turns an attractive purple colour. Once you have two year plants, plantlets can be harvested from the outside of the clumps to expand your plantings.

Simple tips to help you freshen up your home WHAT is the smell of home? As wide-ranging as the answers to that question may be, the quest to make your home smell pleasant and fresh can be achieved with these simple suggestions.

As well as creating pleasant fragrances, indoor plants also clean the air in your home. Consider gardenias, geraniums and eucalyptus the next time you are browsing for floral decorations.

Finally, as not everyone has time to keep the fridge in immaculate condition at all times, there is an easy way to absorb less than appetising smells emanating from the fridge. Take some fresh and unflavoured oats, not the kind with added sugar, and put a bowlful inside the fridge. The oats will take in the scents and keep them there. Make sure you throw out the oats when you’re finished!

Ways to keep children safe when they are around pets SMALL children have trouble telling the difference between pets and toys, which could result in problems unless families thinking of getting a pet put some thought in the matter beforehand.

The American Paediatricians’ Association gives the following advice on choosing the perfect pet and raising animal-smart youngsters: 1. Find a pet that likes children. Older animals are often a good choice as they are less likely to bite out of overexcitement, but it’s best to make sure they are already used to and like children.

2. Treat your pet as well as possible so it enjoys human company. Don’t tie dogs up as this can make them aggressive.

3. Never leave a child alone with an animal. Bites are often down to rough play as children are often unable to tell when a pet is getting overexcited.

4. Teach children not to

put their faces close to animals.

5. Never let children pull pets tails, take their food or toys away or bother them while they’re eating or sleeping.

6. Vaccinate all pets.

7. Follow local bylaws and always keep pets under control.

8. Find out if neighbours have pets. Getting to know them will be a way of getting children used to animals before they have one of their own.

9. Teach children to stay well away from animals that seem threatening or nervous and teach them to recognise the signs.

10. Teach children to keep still if a dog that they don’t know approaches or tries to follow them, stressing that they should never kick out at them or try to run away. Tell them to keep their eyes on the dog while slowly walking away backwards until well out of reach.

DOGS are telepathic and able to sense your emotions and frame of mind instantly. This is one reason for a dog who has misbehaved while you have been away to know that you are reacting angrily and, therefore, come to you saying ‘sorry’ or cower away. It does not remember the past misdemeanour but it does know your present reaction.

Canine instincts vary in strength between breeds and individuals of the same breed. They are either there or not. They can be strengthened, weakened, or diverted, but cannot be put there and cannot be taken away. They might lie dormant and, once developed, can never be weakened.

A dog with an obsession for chasing balls can be controlled by training and by providing other outlets for its energy. If a young dog is corrected the first time it chases a car it may give up the idea. But if it is allowed to chase cars the hunting instinct becomes stronger and in no time it will be very difficult, even impossible, to stop. The dog has the instinct of the hunt, which means a chase and a kill. Sadly, often the dog is killed by the car.

SELF-PRESERVATION: The instinct has been weakened by breeding.

The first instinct is maternal and others cover such areas as survival, hunting, guarding, the pack, and self-preservation.

The maternal instinct allows females to breed. The female is able to bring her pups into the world and care for them especially in the first four weeks.

Self-preservation makes wild dogs furtive and afraid of the unfamiliar which is no use to man. This type of nervousness in the domestic dog is one of the common causes of problems in present-day dogs.

Nearly all cases where children have been attacked by dogs and owners have been bitten arise from nervousness. The dog is afraid it is going to be hurt and attacks first - fear, fright and bite.

The instinct of self-preservation has been weakened by breeding from bold dogs rather than nervous ones, but has never been entirely removed.

Most instincts provide pleasure to the dog, and because it associates the action with pleasure, the instinct grows stronger.

An active hamster is a happy and healthy one

BE GENTLE: Always handle a hamster carefully.

THIS week in our Small Furries series, we take a look at hamsters, more specifically, Dwarf or Syrian hamsters.

Although this advice is valuable for all hamsters, these little fellows need lots of things to climb on and places to explore in their cage as they are very active

and should not become bored.

The classic exercise wheel is ideal, but ensure it has no spaces between the rungs which could trap and break their legs.

Toilet roll tubes and boxes are ideal to hide in and chew as well as being inexpensive. But you can also find a

plethora of toys in all pet shops.

A good addition would be some wood to chew on; however, it must be untreated fruit tree branches and not old furniture. Better still, give them a gnawing block to help them wear their teeth down.

Feeding time should be fun: scatter some food around the cage and hide some in tubes, so they have an adventure hunting for it.

Ensure their water supply is always fresh.

Hamsters love to burrow!

So ensure there is always a deep layer of shavings, torn up tissue or sawdust at the base of their cage. Hamsters are nocturnal, so leave them alone to rest by day. Early evening is the best time to handle them.

If you keep waking them up in the day, they can become stressed and are more likely to bite, for them it is morning so they are awake and active.

What’s the best way to handle a hamster?

Familiarity and routine are what you should aim for.

Handle your hamster carefully from a young age so

they’re used to it and not scared. This also cuts the chances of them biting.

Remember, always be gentle. Use both hands as a scoop when handling them.

Hold them low down over a flat surface: even a small fall can cause serious injury.

Try to imagine how you would feel being picked up by something the size of an apartment block.

Holiday rentals Spaniards own €9.2 billion more popular worth of property abroad MORE tourists than ever have been recorded visiting Spanish destinations

REPORT reveals Spanish people own property in 150 different countries

MORE tourists than have ever been recorded before visited the popular destinations in Spain this summer with holiday rentals becoming ever more popular among visitors.

In the three years since the government in Spain eliminated holiday rentals from the LAU (Ley Arrendamientos Urbano) and handed over the regulation

of the industry to its 17 regional governments, only 11 out of the 17 have finalised the laws.

Andalucia, perhaps not too surprisingly, is among th e reg io n s y et to co mplete its regulations for the governance of short term rentals to tourists. The expected date for completion has been scheduled for the first six months of 2016.

Sales improve THE latest data on monthly home sales from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) has revealed a 15 per cent expansion in transactions in the Spanish property market in September.

This represents the best September in the last five years with 27,621 home sales. It is an increase in comparison to September of last year. In a wider context, the figure is still 52 per cent lower than the 57,682 sales registered in September 2007.

SPANIARDS own €9.2 billion worth of property abroad, the Treasury Ministry has revealed, half of which is in France, the UK, Germany and Portugal.

People making tax and income declarations in Spain for 2013 were required for the first time to state their assets abroad, which brought to light the surprisingly large amount of property owned abroad, which was not all necessarily residential, the ministry reported.

People in Spain own property in almost 150 different countries, some as far afield as Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, New Zealand or Iran.

Yet half of the total are closer to home, the ministry revealed. France is where the

Get rid of any bad smells, throw out the rubbish, clear away dirty laundry, and put some air fresheners around your home.

If it’s a cold day, light your fire or turn the heating on and make your home feels warm and inviting.

Last but not least, brew some fresh coffee when the buyers arrive, it’s an old trick and it works.

Investment in Spanish real estate hits a new high level

By Declan Scanlan A RECENT report by global commercial real estate services firm Cushman and Wakefield shows a new level of investment in Spanish real estate.

The company’s report shows investment in real estate in Spain up to €6,500 million in the first nine months of the year. In the third quarter of 2015 a 13 per cent increase was registered over last year with a total of €2,300 million.

Consultants at Cushman and Wakefield said that a new record could be in line for the end of this year and linked the value of office space to the investment figures.

In office investments in the third quarter of the year there was an 83 per cent rise from

the previous three months to a new total of more than €1,100 million. Investment in commercial premises was at €850 million.

The executives behind the report said that Spanish investors are now more significant as interest continues from overseas.

As the firm continues to assess the property market for investment in Spain it emphasised that the rental market will have a bearing on investment figures in the last quarter of the year as well as in 2016.

The way that prices across the rental market even out is linked to the level of bidding on Spanish assets and it is the rental figures which may well shape the picture of real estate investment in Spain in the future.

By Eleanor Hawkins ALTHOUGH there are no official records to compare prices with, a 500 square metre penthouse apartment on Barcelona’s Paseo de Gracia may have just become the most expensive rental flat in Spain.

Luxury home prices have fallen between 25 and 40 per cent since the property bubble burst.

A member of a Middle-Eastern royal family hell-bent on securing a place to stay in the city has just signed a contract to rent the flat, which boasts 300 square metres of terraces, for a price of €35,000 per month, Prestige Barcelona agency has reported.

LUXURY PROPERTY: Since the recession there has been more interest from foreign investors.

The penthouse, in one of the city’s most expensive areas, has a sale price of €12 million and is just one example of the sort of luxury properties international property hunters are interested in, the agency said.

In 2014, 90 per cent of the homes sold for more than €1 million were bought by customers from abroad, Prestige Barcelona revealed.

Up until a few years ago, luxury properties in Spain were attracting investors from European and Scandinavian countries with France, the UK and Switzerland at the top of the list. Yet, the agency reported, since the recession things have changed and Eastern European, American and Asian buyers have entered the market.

London taxis will be Chinese THE visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to the UK coincided with the announcement of the new TX5 to be produced by Chinese owned London Taxi Company which has just had a £50 million (€70 million) cash injection.

The plug-in hybrid will hit the streets of London in 2018 when taxis are required to have zero emissions. but with clever use of aluminium frames, it can be used for up to seven different vehicle types.

WITH most UK members having returned to Spain for the winter sun, the Handicap Triples Competition boasted a great turn out, resulting in a highly enjoyable event.

Stableford golf event THE Valle de Este Golf Course was very busy last week as the Stableford Competition took place. The rounds were long and despite the great condition of the course, Division one scores were quite low with Fred Foster taking the win with 32 points from Tom Tannant on 30.

In Division two Danny Chorry took the honours with 41 from Rosie Smith on 33. Nearest the pin prizes went to John Winstanley and Rik Bird. The semi finals of the Singles Championship have also taken place with Chris Tyler overcoming John Winstanley one up and Mick Gardener beating Sid Jones three and one.

The next competition day is at Aguilon GC on Tuesday November 24.

The event culminated in an impressive showdown, with plenty of enthusiastic spectator support, and eventually Alan Terry’s team prevailed with a score of 26 to de Boer’s 15.

Badgers Golf Club ON Wednesday November 11, eight members of the Badgers Golf Club played at Valle De Este.

The course, in exceptional condition, was perfect for the sunny occasion. Although a difficult course causing a few struggles, the Badgers’ scores were quite respectable. The winner’s scores were as follows:1st, Steve Casburn, 37 points.

WEMBLEY’S arch was lit up in the colours of the Tricolore as fans began to enter for Tuesday’s England v France football friendly with heavy security surrounding the stadium.

Prince William was joined

by England manager Roy Hodgson and French coach Didier Deschamps on the field at Wembley to lay floral tributes before the national anthems.

English and French fans united for a rendition of the French National Anthem with Arsenal boss Arsene

Wenger among those in the crowd as the French players stood arm in arm for both anthems.

There followed a minute’s silence in tribute to those who lost their lives in Friday’s attacks in Paris and the crowd observed the silence in a fine show of solidarity.

An extra 10,000 tickets were made available for the match since Friday’s attacks and fans quickly took the opportunity to make a stand, united and unafraid, at the sporting event.
