Bobbies bound for Benidorm before next summer MAKING tourists feel at home
By Linda Hall BRITISH bobbies are already pounding the pavement of Magaluf (Mallorca) and San Antonio de Portmany in Ibiza. Next stop could be Benidorm, revealed the central government’s Alicante sub-delegate Juan Carlos Moragues during a recent visit to Benidorm. A National Police exchange programme is in the offing, Moragues said, with Spanish of-
ficers posted to Britain to widen their experience. While bobbies have been flown out to Magaluf to help Mallorcan police keep order on the resort’s often-disorderly streets, they would have a slightly different mission on the Costa Blanca. In Benidorm the UK officers would be there to make tourists feel at home, the sub-delegate continued, and able to relate more easily to the police. There
would be an increased sense of comfort and safety when dealing with ‘their own,’ he said. There is also the likelihood, although Moragues did not mention this, that British police might be taken more seriously by the young tourists out to enjoy non-stop happy hours, sun, sea, sand and sex. Spain’s National Police force is currently in talks with their UK counterparts and the Interior ministry hopes to get
the project up and running as soon as possible and probably before next summer. Neither will this be a oneoff, Moragues added, as it was hoped that this would be an ongoing scheme. And the Spanish officers in the UK? That would be depend on where they were most needed, although logically this would be in cities like London and Brighton with large Spanish populations he said.
