A CORNUCOPIA of dazzling events is promised as hotels fill up

By Carol Irving ALMERIAN tradition and customs will be on show from Saturday August 22, as the city of Almeria celebrates its annual fair and promises a cornucopia of attractions in the week that follows.

Mayor Luis Rogelio Rodriquez Comendador declared that the fair would be a celebra-

tion that “reflects our warm, open character which takes pride in our roots.”

As a somewhat modern twist to the fair’s tradition, information about its various attractions and events can be accessed through a free mobile app called ‘Feria y Fiesta de Almeria 2015’ which will inform visitors about the schedule, concerts, public transport and

parking space availability. Hotels are expected to reach 90 per cent occupancy, based on reservations so far, so out of town visitors need to book quickly.

Among the other attractions taking place are horse parades and float processions. Musicians and stars will take part including internationally-acclaimed Spanish singer Raphael. He will be accompa-

nied by Almeria City Orchestra on August 28 at 10.30pm at the Palacio de los Juegos Mediterraneos, with Melendi taking to the same stage the following day. Rock groups Saratoga and Tierra Santa, as well as La Skala de Richter, play on August 22.

Fans of ‘The Voice’ can also hear this year’s winner Antonio Jose perform on August 26.

Put out to tender A MILLION Euro twoyear contract to run canteens at Almeria public schools is going to be put out to tender by the Junta de Andalucia regional government.

An eight day period has been established for offers to be presented and the requirements are listed in the Official Regional Bulletin published on Monday, August 17.

Travel card coming A PROVINCIAL transport card should be ready for use by the second half of next year and will cover Almeria City, the Development and Housing department has announced.

The card will give access to all areas covered by the Metropolitan Transport Consortium, meaning an estimated four million users will be able to benefit from better rates.

By Eleanor Hawkins ALMERIA Province is recovering its former status as a welcoming land of opportunities for outsiders, new statistics for 2014 have revealed.

The number of people moving to the area from abroad has gone up to 6,207 after five years of drops, giving hope that things are

finally on the road to recovery.

Almeria is now the second favourite province in Andalucia for people moving from abroad to choose to set up home, and according to the Andalucian Statistics and Cartography Institute most newcomers are from the UK, Romania and Morocco.

Although still a long way from the

17,478 non-Spaniards who moved to the province in 2008, the figures are certainly better than those for 2013 at just 5,577.

Meanwhile the number of locals leaving is falling which gives authorities reason to be hopeful. While in 2013 13,245 Almeria people left to seek their fortunes elsewhere, last year this number fell to just 8,662.

By Carol Irving ONE of Spain’s most popular festivals of the year, and probably one of the messiest, takes place in Buñol, Valencia, on Wednesday August 26.

About 40-50,000 participants are expected to take part in the 70th anniversary of the biggest food fight in which tomatoes are flung with abandon with no other objective than to have fun and get extremely messy.

The roots of this festival stem from one hot August day in 1945 when a group of young people were having fun on one of the floats celebrating the ‘giants’ parade in the

Association assists victims of violence A NEW report on gender violence has revealed that five women report their partners or ex-partners in Almeria Province every day.

Yet far too many women are too scared to report violence,

the Andalucian Women’s Institution (IAM) complains, stressing that of three women who tragically died at the hands of their partners or exes last year two had never reported their killers.

Yet IAM says reporting abuse and violence is the only way out, and works to support victims and encourage them.

An average of 36 women per day, 6,173 so far this year, receive support and advice from

the association’s municipal women’s information centres in in towns and villages and working closely with local councils.

There is also a telephone service for women, which dealt with 4,510 calls regarding gen-

der violence during the first half of the year.

Calls to the helpline (900 200 999) are free anonymous and can provide victims with general information, legal advice and support in 51 languages.

From royal family QUEEN Letizia of Spain has sent a signed photograph to Garrucha’s day centre in response to a letter from one of the elderly centre members sent to the royal family. Within a month the queen had replied and included the photo.

Almeria opens arms to Game of Thrones SECRECY surrounds filming of the popular HBO series’s sixth season

By Eleanor Hawkins EXCITEMENT is rising in Almeria, particularly in El Chorrillo de Sierra Alhamilla in Pechina, as set-builders prepare to get to work for Game of Thrones filming.

Sets built in Belfast, Northern Ireland, began to arrive on site last week and huts to house offices were put into place, local mayor Juan Manuel Lopez reported, stating that set-builders were due to start work on Monday (August 17).

Although a shroud of secrecy surrounds the sixth season of the popular HBO series, which is due to be filmed in the area between October 10 and 23, there are rumours that sets under construction include a large temple. Locals also believe the area, which has been used in the past to film adverts and last year was used for Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods and Kings, will be the setting for at least one battle as castings were specifically looking for heavily-built men.

Following the recent financial crisis and

the fall of the construction sector, which provided a lot of the area’s income, Pechina is preparing to welcome crews with open arms as the filming will create work and generate income as well as placing it on the world map. “Game of Thrones will be a much-needed boost for many local families,” Lopez said.

Other probable Almeria locations for the series based on George RR Martin’s saga include the lighthouse in Mesa Roldan and La Alcazaba in Almeria City.

Lifesaving attempt’s tragic end A MAN from Jaen has drowned off Monsul beach in Cabo de Gata Natural Park while trying to save two children who had been caught in the water by strong currents.

Emergency services and Marine Rescue reported that calls were received at about 1.30pm on Friday (August 14) from people on the beach saying that two children were in trouble in the water and a group of people had jumped in to try and rescue them.

Although the improvised lifeguards managed to pull the children out of the water, the victim, a 41-year-old man from Jaen, was unable to resist the strong currents and was later found amongst rocks by the Guardia Civil and ambulance staff could do nothing to save his life, pronouncing him dead at the scene.

Relatives of the man, believed to have been related to one of the children, had to be given psychological support on the beach after they were informed of the tragic loss.

Dog beach announced ADRA Council has announced its intention to create a specific beach for local dogs to use.

Local Mayor Manuel Cortes announced the beach would be part of a new municipal regulation due to be presented for approval at the next plenary session, and if it goes through Adra will be the second town in Almeria and the ninth in Andalucia to provide pets and their owners with their own beach.

By Eleanor Hawkins NIJAR Council has announced a new project which, if approved next month, is guaranteed to cause rows as it intends to reclaim private land by Cabo de Gata Natural Park to create better access to the beaches.

The project, which will be presented for approval at a plenary session next month, deputy mayor and Beaches councillor Alexis Pineda announced, aims to allow the town to start providing services including cleaning, maintenance and surveillance in the bays within its part of the park and create

easier access to the beaches by taking back the required land.

Pineda said that he understood the project would be a controversial one which could raise many hackles but explained that it would hopefully recover the bays as a quality destination.

A MAN has been charged by Almeria National Police for reporting an apparently nonexistent crime and causing citizen unrest by asking for help identifying his supposed attackers on the internet.

The 24-year-old Spanish man, identified with initials RDM, placed an official report with the police on August 8 stating that a car had blocked him in on the road to the airport and four men had got out and forced him to hand over €200 in cash and his mobile phone.

The suspect later posted the story on Facebook, asking for help finding his supposed attackers and causing what the police force referred to as ‘great social alarm.’

Woman hospitalised after boat explosion A WOMAN has been taken to hospital with second and third degree burns after the boat she was on in Garrucha port exploded.

The blast happened at about 12.50pm on Thursday (August 13) when the 50-year-old Spanish woman, accompanied on the seven metre boat named Chess by her husband and two adult sons, turned the key in the ignition, 112 Emergency Services reported.

The victim jumped overboard after the resulting flames burned her back and arms and was fished out by her sons and taken by ambulance to La Inmaculada hospital in Huercal-Overa, while witnesses managed to put the fire out with an extinguisher and hosepipes from the docks.

Although an investigation will be carried out, initial studies point to excess gas in the engine being behind the blast.

Water rationing threat as residents upset by overuse SIGNS have now been put up to warn about taking more water than is allowed

By Maria José Fernandez THE common image of people filling up hundreds of containers with water in the public fountains of Berja is to come to an end.

The town council, following the municipal regulation for citizens’ coexistence approved during the last term in office, has requested Local Police to keep an eye on citizens collecting water in the public fountains, making sure that they do not go above the limit, which has been settled at 30 litres per person a day.

This motion was put forward as, especially during the weekends, dozens of vans and cars, most of them from outside the town, are seen filling up several containers in the Cerillo districts where the Almez and Oro fountains are located, according to the area’s neighbours.

These situations have caused great outrage amongst residents as they complain about the overuse of the town’s natural sources of water, the bad condition in which the surroundings of the fountains are left and the traffic troubles

Of a total of 2,094 tests carried out on the roads by the beach where the festival was held, 65 drivers tested positive for excess alcohol and another 60 for drugs.

Sam has been an inspiration to others, a true rock.

THE first impression you receive from meeting Sam Bayley is warmth and openness as her smile tells you that everything will be OK. This is the philosophy that has made Sam strong, and she generates that in others around her.

Sam graduated in the UK with her Master’s degree in English Literature at Glasgow University at the age of 21. Later she began work as a merchandiser for C&A where her career took her to Dundee, London and Brent Cross.

Sam’s senior manager steered her away from what she originally wanted to do which was to become a buyer, as they had realised her skills were creative and so she succeeded in her role as merchandiser. In 1989 Sam’s parents moved to Spain, and so she decided to try it too, just for one year, but that soon became permanent.

Within that time she met Joe, who later became her husband.

Together they worked hard building up their furniture business, working long hours producing it and many hours spent at markets to sell their wares.

This is where success begins, as you only reap what you sow, and both Sam and Joe were busily planning for their future. During this time Sam also raised her family, five beautiful children, and still she managed to work the business with Joe working all hours around the clock.

Some years later, Sam noticed that things were not going too well in life for one of her daughters, Hannah, and there were problems that needed to be addressed to put things right. It takes a special person, like a mother to know when something is not quite right. Hannah was suffering depression

which is a condition that many suffer which goes unnoticed.

Being a loving mother, Sam was quick to respond and began to study eagerly in order to offer help first hand. After some years, Hannah came back to the light with the love and strength that had been given to her by her loving family. Sam was so passionate about the need to raise awareness of conditions such as these that she decided to do much more to help.

The Mental Health Foundation is an organisation that Sam has raised money for by using her skills and also her sheer determination. Sam trained to do the London marathon after months of getting herself fit and earning a place to run. Despite the odds after tearing her calf muscle, Sam soldiered on to still enter the run with her two friends Jen and Kerry.

She recalls the emotions that flowed when she ran past Buckingham Palace and the Mall to the finishing line to earn her medal. Before this wonderful achievement, Sam organised a concert to

raise money for the Mental Health Foundation. Divas, Nikki Rae, Laura Elen, Jordana, and Laura Oldfield put together a spectacular show earlier this year which was a huge success and the total

fundraising amount so far has been a staggering €5,211.

This is an amazing contribution towards not only raising money but raising awareness of this type of condition. Sam is a strong believer that anything is possible; she is a tower of strength. Maybe it is because Sam practises mindfulness which is a guide to help your mind be in a better place, to be positive, not to look back or regret, but to live in the moment.

This is why Sam has been an inspiration to others, a true rock, within the family and the workplace too. When asked who were the people that she looked up to the most she said: “Paula Radcliffe for running, Hillary Clinton as she is an amazing woman, and Maya Angelou as there are many quotes that are so true by her.”

Today Sam’s daughter Hannah has a beautiful baby girl herself named Ella after her great grandmother. Sam added “Ella was my grandmother who was an amazing woman, strong and independent, and who I looked up to, and was always a light in my life.”

Sam Bayley is a replica of that inner strength and understanding that continues to radiate upon others around her.

Burglar threatens electrocution A MAN has been arrested suspected of breaking into a property, threatening to electrocute the resident and escaping with €1,900 in cash.

The Guardia Civil reported that 45-year-old JFJ, from Almeria City, was arrested for alleged burglary, threats, illegal detention and possession of an illegal weapon.

The victim reported that the man broke into his home, hit him over the head with a gun, tied him up, dumped him in a bath full of water and threatened to drop a switched-on hairdryer in. He then ran away with the money.

While officers began a search, an off-duty rural patrol from Valencia were approached by two women who reported that an hour after the first crime a man had threatened them with a gun but later ran off when he spotted more people in the area.

They told officers which direction he had gone in and the suspect was soon found.

On a break-in spree THE Guardia Civil has arrested a 22 year-old-man from San Isidro-Nijar in connection with five crimes of breaking and entering, theft and attempted burglary.

Investigations linked the crimes, during which items of jewellery, TVs and mobile phones were taken, through the curious way the burglar had of using screws to force locks and placed the man, with initials AP, at the scene of one.

Thousands of jobless left without benefits AT least 50,000 unemployed residents in Almeria are no longer receiving any bene-

fits or other financial aid from the state.

According to the informa-

tion released by trade union CCOO, the rate of people in this same situation has not failed to increase since 2010.

In Andalucia, the number has gone from 31.2 per cent to 55.9 per cent.

In Andalucia, Cadiz is the province where a higher number of unemployed people are not earning anything (64.9 per cent), followed, by Almeria at (62.8 per cent) and Malaga (62.7 per cent).

Disabled parking spaces controversy THERE are no vertical traffic signs to stop people using them

By Maria José Fernandez PEDRO Diaz, socialist councillor at Almeria Council, asked the governing team on Saturday to guarantee parking spaces for people with disabilities in the area of El Palmeral beach.

This is the only one in the city where facilities have been adapted for members of the disabled community, and an assistance team has been hired to help them access the water.

According to Mr Diaz, the creation of a bike lane has caused the parking spaces reserved for them to be removed and, even though new ones have been created nearby, there are no traffic signs to indicate it, which means they are usually occupied by other vehicles.

According to the Spanish regulations, even if these parking spaces are shown with paint on the ground, other users can park on them if

there are no vertical traffic signs to prohibit it.

“Police cannot do anything about it as there are no vertical traffic signs,” said the councillor, and continued: “This is the only beach people with disabilities can access; the least the council could do would be to ensure a parking space near it, and guarantee they can enjoy the beach just as much as the rest of Almeria residents.”

4 face jail for drug smuggling FOUR men are facing five years and three months each in jail after allegedly bringing more than 700 kilos of hashish into the country to sell on for personal gain.

The Public Prosecutor has requested the sentences for each of the four suspects to be put on trial at an Almeria City court on September 16. If they are unable to meet the €3.2 million fines they are also facing charges for a crime against public health and could be sentenced to an extra year in jail.

The prosecutor’s initial report stated that the Spanish men, all aged between 31 and 47, were caught by police officers after unloading 27 packets of the drug weighing a total of 767.7 kilos on an Adra beach.

Judge punishes negligent father DETAINEE charged with child neglect

By Maria Jose Fernandez A COURT has suspended the parental responsibility of a father towards his daughter as a precaution after he left her locked inside a vehicle in Torrecardena Hospital’s car park.

The Superior Justice Court of Andalucia announced this week that the detainee was accused of a crime of child neglect and he

accepted responsibility for his actions before a judge.

The events took place on August 9, when the man left the girl inside his car while he attended a doctor’s appointment. After several witnesses noticed her, showing signs of dehydration, they alerted the hospital’s security guards who released her and took her to the A&E department for treatment.

The father was arrested shortly afterwards.

THOUSANDS of children in Almeria have been able to continue learning despite having to deal with an illness or health problem while in hospital.

A total of 1,834 minors have received educational assistance at the hospital classrooms in Torrecardenas Hospital in Almeria, La Inmaculada in Huercal-Overa and Poniente in El Ejido during the year 2014-2015. These children participated in educational activities with the aim of contributing to their intellectual, emotional and social development while they were hospitalised.

Professionals at the hospital have the goal of reducing the impact of school absenteeism that many children have to experience due to their health problems as well as make their stay at the hospital easier to cope with.

Market complaints A RESIDENTS’ association in Veraplayazul has raised concerns about the new street market set up at the seafront, as they say it is occupying a large amount of the pavement.

“The chaotic area that heads to El Playazo, which is filled with pedestrians, pets, runners and bicycles is now home to a new market set up by the council,” said the asso-

ciation in a press release.

Neighbours claim vans and other vehicles park on the pavement, which they claimed represents a hazard as the pavement could collapse, as similar incidents have happened before.

They claim a better solution would be to join the new market to the one that already exists in front of a nearby hotel.

Celebrating by candlelight VISITORS strolled through the narrow village streets

By Staff Reporter COINCIDING with the night of San Lorenzo’s Tears (known as the rain of stars) Mojacar Pueblo hosted its famous ‘Night of the Candles’ on Wednesday, August 12, for the fourth year in a row Mojacar, known for its beauty, breathtaking views and exceptional location, is one of the most idyllic places in Spain to gaze out into space at the stars.

This can be done any night of the year, but is at its best on this magical August night. Mojacar offered visitors the chance to see the starlit sky by turning off the electric lights and lighting the town with candles.

it was before electric lighting existed.

A torch and candlelit route was created, inviting visitors to stroll through the narrow streets of the village to watch the stars from various viewpoints.

Many local retailers, business people and residents took part in the event, dressing in

white and dimming lights to help create the special atmosphere.

Two kiosks sold candles for members of the public to purchase and place along the route, and enactments of old local stories were held in the cave before a street parade through the village.

Disabled man tricked into handing over cash THE Provincial Court of Almeria has sentenced a man from Alhama de Almeria to three-and-a-half years in prison for defrauding a friend who had a mental disability of more than €21,000.

The prosecution explained how, between January 2007 and April 2010, the man identified as LEGM accompanied the victim to a bank on seven occasions.

He was able to trick the man into handing him a total of €21,260.

According to the text the victim suffers from a condition which makes him “easily

When the victim’s mother found out his account was absolutely empty, the man returned €1,665 in two instalments in December 2010 and April 2011.

He has been sentenced to prison and to pay the victim compensation of €19,695.

Man jailed for stealing ‘erotic’ items from car A 23-YEAR-OLD man has been sentenced to 20 months in prison for stealing items from an ‘erotic busines’ from a car in Vicar. The events took place in September 2011, when the accused was 20-years-old.

He previously had a criminal record for similar incidents.

After accessing the community garage of a property in Vicar, he forced the front door of the vehicle and stole all of the items.

He will also have to pay compensation of two euros per day for a period of three years and four months.

Council wants help with heritage site A GUIDED visit will be filmed to gather support

Indalecio Modesto, Cuevas del Almanzora’s Tourism and Culture councillor, has reported that the heritage site, which dates back to the Copper Age, has been completely abandoned and desperately needs maintenance and cleaning work.

Staff is also needed, Modesto said, as the information centre currently has just one volunteer who is not always available.

These repair works which are being paid for from provincial funds are important for the maintenance of the road networks as they will not only assist in stopping the roads from sinking but with the additional fitting of new pipes should stop water from pooling and reduce the number of potholes.

THE shanty-town-looking area of Parque de las Familias in Almeria City is soon to be a thing of the past.

The Executive Commission for Urbanism has approved demolition of the industrial unit and homes located on the plot near the park and Maestro Padilla Auditorium.

Municipal sources said the goal was to improve the appearance of the area, as over the years it has become home for illegal shanties.

The council has estimated the cost of the project at €20,300, which has been put out to tender. It is expecting to ‘have these properties demolished in a very short period of time’, the council declared.

In addition to the demolition, municipal workers will also clean the area to improve its sanitary conditions.

People who are currently inhabitants to these soon-tobe-demolished homes who do not have anywhere else to live, have been given several options by the council.

Are You Affected By Changes To UK Bank Compensation Scheme?

Do you keep large deposits in bank accounts?

If so, you need to understand to what extent you will be protected in event of bank failure.

For peace of mind you should establish what investor protection you have with each of your banks, and how it works. The same applies for capital you have held in other financial institutions like investment firms, insurance companies etc in the event of institutional failure. If you have any concerns about the level of protection you should establish if there are other institutions or investment structures which offer a higher level of protection, or if there are steps you can take to feel safer.

Within the EU, banks deposits up to €100,000 are protected. So if a bank fails, any deposits you have up to this limit are refunded.

In the UK, the Financial Services Compensation Scheme is based on the EU compensation scheme and is available to savers if a UK regulated bank or financial institution fails.

At present, the limit per institution (i.e. across all accounts held with the

From 1st January 2016, the standard protection amount is reducing to £75,000, because the exchange rate has changed. The UK regulators have a duty to review the amount every five years to ensure the protection is similar to the rest of the EU. It is worth noting that an institution is not the same as a bank. So Halifax and Bank of Scotland are one institution, for example.

If you have more than £75,000 held with a single UK regulated institution, the excess over £75,000 will not be protected. You may wish to consider reducing balances

so that these are spread to provide more protection (the actual balance should be lower than this to give cover to any interest to be added).

Those who have less than €100,000 with the same institution regulated elsewhere within the Eurozone are not affected, as the Euro amount has not changed.

However if you have bank deposits over €100,000 you should consider ways to protect your savings from the risk of institutional failure.

Note that since the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey are not in the EU, banks which are regulated there are not covered by the EU scheme or the UK Financial Services Compensation Scheme.

These jurisdictions have their own compensation schemes, with a limit of £50,000.

Besides spreading your deposits, you can move capital into

alternate investment arrangements that provide a higher level of protection.

For example Luxembourg offers a state controlled investor protection regime which provides maximum security to investors without limit.

You should also ensure that you have adequate diversification across different investment assets, because this decreases risk as well as increasing the potential for improved returns.

A total of 1,200 signatures

requesting the regional sub delegation of the central government to increase surveillance in the graveyard, together with 20 official complaints to the company in charge and six official reports presented before the police.

The next step, they said

will be presenting the documents before the Andalucian ombudsman.

Neighbours complain, the thefts do not cease to occur.

Only last week, two more were registered with the same modus operandi: forcing the niches open to steal valuable ornaments.

Avoiding the floods VERA is getting its act together this year and has already started a campaign to clean drains and gutters before the autumn rains arrive.

The council has employed Codeur company to do the work in an aim to avoid the common sight of flooded streets come September when the heavens start to open.

A team of five people are going round removing debris from the drainage system, and have reported some surprising finds including brand new sunglasses and wallets in the area the street market is held.

Works councillor Francisco Vazquez said: “the fact the drains haven’t been cleaned for four years was reckless and could have had damaging consequences for the village.

“They need to be cleaned at least once a year.”

Dozens of prefabricated classrooms in Almeria should only be temporary ALMERIA, is for yet another year, the Andalucian province with a larger number of prefabricated classrooms.

In total, there are 86 of these facilities prepared to hold pupils and students for the

2015/2016 year, according to the Andalucian Parliament member, Aranzazu Martin (Partido Popular), who expressed her concern on the matter.

Elvis helps charities CONCERT was a complete sell-out two weeks before the event

By Community Reporter THE long awaited return of Simon Patrick, European Elvis Tribute Champion, came to fruition at the Hostal Rural in Turre recently.

Helping Hands, based in Lorca and Aguilas along with Puppy Rescue worked together with, Saving Animals Spain (SAS), a new local organisation currently in the process of registering legally, to put the show together. The event was a complete sell-out two weeks prior with proceeds dedicated to continuation of the groups’ dedicated work of rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming needy animals in the region.

SAS are actively working with a local Spanish run refuge that is just about to move to larger and more suitable premises in the local area.

Despite being horrendously delayed on his

journey to the event due to a serious traffic accident, Simon, undaunted, and an animal lover himself, persevered, understanding how important this event was. DJ Steve King admirably saved the day with his organisational skills and had guests rocking with various dance competitions.

A special tasty buffet of hot and cold dishes kindly prepared by Hostal Rural in Turre was enjoyed by everyone. Raffle Prizes were donated by local supporters and businesses and alone raised an amazing €511. The charities would like to thank all those who contributed so kindly and are pleased to announce a grand total, after marketing expenses, of €2,497 was raised for the charities.

Mayor of the town, Oscar Medina, explained in a statement that this initiative launched by the council had been designed as an original, unique and innovative new feature of Torrox, which is also expected to become a tourist attraction.

He pointed out that the installation was set up by a local company and will remain in place until the winter.

Paola Moreno, Deputy Mayor of Torrox, said the project had coincided with the local fair in the district El Morche, which meant that a large number of tourists had already been able to enjoy this new umbrella extravaganza.

FROM fancy folders and trendy backpacks to USB drives and other techie gadgets, ballooning back-to-school costs are pinching families’ budgets. The cost of everything school-related keeps going up, which makes trying to pay everything else in the household a struggle.

A recent report from the UK revealed that 60 per cent of parents are struggling financially because of back-to-school expenses, which is causing great stress as a result.

School costs nowadays range from books, uniforms, voluntary contributions, registration fees and after-school activities. But they can also incorporate the cost of expensive technology as some schools now require that parents pay for technological advances like iPads or

Before dashing out to the shops, check what is left over from last year. Why bother buying a brand-new pack of pencils, pens and highlighters when you have loads sitting in your kitchen drawer? Likewise, making an inventory of your child’s wardrobe can also prevent overbuying.

Parents can often save money too by shopping online, or remembering that items are priced highest at back-to-school time, so if it is possible to wait until the end of September sales, it would be worthwhile. And as always, make a list of everything you need to buy and stick to that list.

Spain expected to break record for car sales this year NEW vehicle deliveries in Spain are predicted to move past the one million vehicles threshold for the first time in five years, thanks to a strong economic rebound and the government’s subsidy programmes.

According to ANFAC, the country’s industry association, the 2015 forecast finds passenger car registrations increasing by 23 per cent to 1.05 million vehicles.

In 2014, a total of 855,308 cars were delivered in Spain, which was an 18 per cent rise on the previous year.

The ANFAC guideline sees all registrations, including industrial and commercial vehicles, jumping 22.7 per cent to 1.21 million units. ANFAC President Jose Luis Lopez-Schuemmer said: “The economic forecast is good, we expect 3 per cent GDP growth this year, and the jobless rate will also fall.”

Arranging a logo is easy enough. If you are light-fingered, in a laptop keyboard sense, there are online logo designs to draw inspiration from. Once you find something that inspires you the next step is to find a graphic designer.

Fact: This debris was not identified as such but we mustn’t let truth get in the way of a good story. This same media focused on trivia when damning evidence pointed to Washington and Kiev complicity.

To this can be added the peculiar US, Ukraine and Dutch government ‘no comment’ response when asked to release vital evidence that would assist in getting to the cause of the tragedy.

Mainstream media intention was clear: The most deceptive lie of all is the half lie with deliberate intention to deceive. It is common knowledge that Ukraine’s BUK missile systems are Russian made. In the same way NATO armaments are mostly American made.

THE number of deaths of members of the public who have taken part in Spain’s bull running festivities has been shockingly high in 2015.

During the weekend of August 16-18 alone, four participants were killed in bull running events and a total of 10 individuals have died taking part so far this summer.

While bull running and bullfighting activities remain controversial, when so many spectators or participants are killed or injured through these celebrations, there surely has to be some serious attempt to prevent further fatalities.

Different regions of Spain have different rules regarding these events, with some even allowing children to accompany their parents in the festivity, and while each municipality has their own regulations governing these events, incidents still occur.

As debates about the cruelty of Spanish customs such as bullfighting and bull running continue, the first priority must be to address the issues regarding the safety of those taking part.

It may be traditional to celebrate events like these but when so many people are dying for the sake of a festivity, isn’t it time organisers seriously consider the safety procedures of these celebrations and take measures that will stop more people being killed?

The current complacent attitude that “these things happen” should be challenged, and formal regulations that ensure public safety should be established across Spain.

IT was a bright crisp autumn day. Feeling a little slow I decided to take in a second large mug of tea to get my bearings for the day and formulate a plan of action.

Across the road from me was my neighbour putzing about in his garden pruning trees and watering.

Being of the friendly type I saluted him and asked what he was up to on this fine day. Back came the curt reply, “don’t talk to me, I have a lot on my mind and a lot to do.” As he was fully retired and rarely left the house I couldn’t even hazard a guess of what would be so colossally important, so, pushed the issue.

He stopped, looked at me as if I had lost my mind, laid down his water bucket and clippers, reached deep into his pocket and took out a scrap of paper about the size of a gum wrapper and began to read. “One,” he snarled, “mail letters at the post office. Two,

I had lived by then some five years in

Spain and had never seen or witnessed a Spaniard make a list about anything, concerning any issue.

The act of ‘listing’ reduces the world to a confining and limited life. Drawing a box around your day then limits your circumstance free of adventure, change of circumstance, trajectory or fate. Was this small act the newcomer had poked a hole in the spontaneity of life (here).

He had unwittingly ruled out in participating in the giant chaotic scheme of things and would never get a glimpse of ‘Spanish civilization’ as it flows uphill, backwards or where ever.

The note taking was a serendipity inclusion unto Kafka’s list explaining modern man: “he fornicates, reads newspapers and smokes.” That man has since evolved into making lists too but it still had nothing to do with the heart beat of this Iberian circumstance. No more than counting beers in the hope of remaining sober.

I too surround myself with a library of pens, note paper and large sheets for writing. But they are, as they should be, directional sign posts not limited objectives of completed tasks.

A genuine war hero who deserves every benefit going JUST a line to say how proud the family of Ernest Hall, former Far East prisoner of war, who was 100 years old, (as per your Costa del Sol edition front page story 30 July–5 August) should be, and how humble we his fellow countrymen and women should be.

A real hero who failed to mention in the article that all those freed from the Japanese POW camps were made to pay for their ‘subsistence whilst in enemy hands’ by the British Government after the war!!!

Absolutely shocking, but true!

One would hope Mr Hall is receiving his winter fuel allowance, summer cooling benefit, and anything he requires in his old age.

God bless you, Mr Hall, and all your generation who gave us our present-day freedom.

Festival rip-off MY granddaughter and her partner recently attended the Dreambeach festival at Villaricos.

They had paid for tickets to get in but, to their amazement and disgust, they were charged €18 (eighteen) to leave!! Not only that but they were charged the same amount for just two drinks.

As they were just visitors to Spain, and spoke no Spanish, what could they do but pay up? Needless to say, they will not return to a Spanish pop festival and will tell their friends to do likewise.

MAY I through your Letters column express a big thank you to the lifeguards/socorristas at the Tropicana Beach, El Faro.

Today when we were leaving the beach, my partner tried to climb on to a small ledge leading on to a pathway. Unfortunately, she lost her balance and fell backwards onto some small rocks.

I was behind her and managed to prevent her head falling on to the rocks, which would have made things more serious.

However, she landed on her left hip and was unable to get up.

This incident took place approximately 20 metres from the lifeguard lookout post and they were on the scene immediately. They took my partner to the lookout post and treated the bruise on her hip.

Throughout they were very professional and even offered to escort my partner across the main road to our car as I was laden with beach chairs, parasol, towels, etc.

The downside of all this was despite the beach being very busy and a cry from my partner as she fell backwards, only a young Spanish couple came to see if they could assist.

Disappointing to think it could have been something more serious yet no one bothered to come and see if they could help.

Thank you again the lifeguards/socorristas.

More rubbish AFTER reading a recent letter on your page about the rubbish piling up in the street, I went to the local council to ask about ours.

We have been looking at a smelly pile of waste overflowing for four bins and a skip for two weeks.

Their answer was: “It gets cleared regularly.” I asked how regularly because it’s been there for two weeks.

They said: “Regularly,” and then I was asked to leave. If bi-weekly is regular, is it any wonder there are rats running around in the street?

Load of bull WITH regard to Mike Walsh’s article in last week’s edition, I have no doubt that there may be 1,400,000 Ukrainian passport holders wanting to move to Russia; however, there is a very strong possibility that the vast majority of these are actually ethnic Russians.

Wherever you go in the former soviet states you will find large numbers of ethnic Russians. To this day they gen-

erally remain loyal to Mother Russia and firmly believe that the country they are living in should remain part of the Russian Federation (Putin’s new Soviet Union) and it’s no surprise that with so many actual non-pro-Russian people in Ukraine many of whom are looking toward Europe, the ethnic Russians would be disenchanted There are 8,334,000 ethnic Russians in Ukraine making up 17.3 per cent of the population. In a snap poll last year, 73 per cent of Ukrainians said they favoured moving closer towards Europe.

I believe in freedom of the press and freedom of expression (pity it is not actually the case in Mike Walsh’s beloved Russia as all media is government controlled in one way or another).

CAN you or any of your readers tell me why roadworks to main streets through towns are carried out in the middle of summer when it causes the most hassle?

In the winter when it would cause very little congestion, you never see anyone fixing the roads! But as soon as the tourist season starts, they block all the traffic… do they do it on purpose?

Using headlights AS part of a new series, we answer some common driving questions, kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers.

DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS: Since 2011 all new cars have them.

A LOT of cars are seen with their lights on during the day but these lights are usually different to ones referred to as ‘headlights.’

Since 2011, all new cars and trucks sold in the EU were required to have Daytime Running Lights (DLR) which turn on automatically with the engine in accordance with a new directive designed to improve road safety. The rule then became mandatory for trucks and buses from August 2012.

The DLR is a new method of illumination with low energy consumption, but it is not designed to provide additional lighting for the driver, but rather they work to improve the vehicle’s visibility to other road users.

With regard to headlights, there are times when you must turn your lights on during

the day and in certain locations, as marked by road signs, such as when you enter a tunnel. During the winter months when the sun is lower and visibility becomes problematic as a result, the DGT recommend having headlights on during the day.

Under normal circumstances there is no mandatory requirement to have your headlights on during the day and that also applies when driving through road works. However, they should be used in certain road conditions, such as when travelling on a reversible lane, which can at times, be used by traffic in either direction. These lanes are more common near to city centres where the flow of traffic can alter to give more space for vehicles in one direction.

The number of women without a partner wanting fertility treatment has more than tripled in less than a decade with experts putting the rise down to

women putting their career first and then choosing to have a child on their own before it’s too late.

An increased acceptance of both single-parent families and IVF in general is also thought to have played a part.

In 2006, the number of single women with no partners regis-

tered at UK IVF clinics was 292. In 2013 it was 952.

Fertility starts to decline in women from the age of 31 and by the age of 35 the decline is ‘significant’ prompting more women to have treatment. , even if they have not yet found 'the one' and want to enter parenthood alone.

A study has revealed C-sections affect at least one form of a baby’s ability to concentrate, scientists found in their study at York University in Canada; the first of its kind to

analyse birth experiences in this context.

Swim to stay fit and cool but it can be damaging to health CHLORINE in swimming pools can cause allergies and asthma, particularly in children

By Gemma Quinn ACCORDING to a recent survey, 24.2 per cent of Spaniards say they swim regularly and in the hot summer months there is no better way to stay fit.

However, swimming can have a few adverse effects on your health, number one being chlorine.

Allergies and asthma The chlorine in swimming pools can cause allergies and asthma, particularly in young children. Whilst the chlorine fights the germs and bacteria in the water, it can dry out skin.

The Spanish Academy of Dermatology said the skin’s pH is 5.5 but the water ’s is seven which leads to the skin

becoming dry. To help avoid the problem have a good shower immediately after swimming and apply re-hydration creams at the end of the day.

Allergies can be caused by chloramine, the result of the chemical reaction between chlorine and other organic fluids in the water, such as saliva and uric acid from urine which may be in the water.

A study published in the American Chemistry Society said that in large amounts, chloramine can result in heart or brain damage.

Skin complaints Hard water is widely found along Spain’s Mediterranean coastline and these water reserves have large amounts of

minerals, particularly calcium and magnesium, which leads to more cases of eczema and dermatitis.

Green hair Copper sulphate which is added to water to kill fungi is what often reacts with blonde hair turning it green, not chlorine. A hair mask before swimming will help prevent hair reacting with the water.

Bad teeth Swimming for more than six hours a week can affect your teeth as they are exposed to large amounts of water that has been chemically treated.

These products lead to a pH level higher than saliva meaning saliva proteins decompose quickly, forming organic deposits or brown plaque on teeth.” Fluoride toothpaste will help prevent this look.

ACCUSATIONS against the late PM, Sir Edward Heath, are just the latest in the never-ending round of alleged child abuse cases. Whilst there is no doubt these matters should be investigated and the guilty brought to justice - like Max Clifford, Rolf Harris, Gary Glitter there have also been notable failings.

The example of Lord McAlpine (falsely identified as a child abuser

by BBC2’s Newsnight) clearly shows that mistakes of identity or false allegations aren’t impossible and that justice and fair procedures should apply to the living as well as the dead.

As Sir Edward Garnier, former solicitor-general, said: “This country is the poorer if it continues to allow allegations to be bandied around as if they are the unvarnished truth and for that to be . . .

fluenced by fashionable political issues; too eager for the spotlight; and fairly useless at doing what people really want them to do.

Incidentally, the entertainer Lionel Blair recently declared, after 60 years in showbiz, that he’ll no

longer work with kids because of the risk of being falsely accused of inappropriate behaviour. This is after an incident in Stockport while he was doing panto. Blair asked a little boy, aged about seven, his name. The child looked up at him and replied: “If you touch my nuts, you’re dead.’’

What a sad indictment of these depressing Savilesque times. But time to get used to the fact that Britain is rapidly changing. Uncontrolled immigration; incompetent politicians; overpaid, over-pensioned public-sector bosses who couldn’t organise a you-know-what; a health service on life support despite huge increases in ‘managers’; schools that teach little and allow young people to leave unable to read, write or do simple sums.

But then, we’re all in it together, right?

Innocent dog trapp between its owner

DISAGREEMENT between the two parties centred on cattery fee

By Eleanor Hawkins ABOUT 35 people gathered in Taberno on August 11 to protest regarding a disagreement a pet-owner had with a local kennels and cattery.

News had spread in the area that Barney, a dog belonging to an elderly Arboleas expatriate, had been kidnapped by the kennel management and a cat belonging to the same owner lost.

The cat, Paws and Claws kennels and cattery management meanwhile stated, had gone missing during a break-in suffered by the establishment during which burglars cut through wire fences. The management stressed that Susie, the cat, had been reported missing to the police and extensive searches were carried out in the area to no avail.

Sadly Susie was found days later in a nearby garden in very bad health, and died the next day.

Meanwhile the disagreement between the two parties centred on cattery fees, with the customer refusing to pay as the cat had gone missing and later died.

Paws and Claws management meanwhile filed police reports for alleged threats and abuse and stated they

A new life for old clothing in Albox LOCALS have been getting into the habit of recycling

By Eleanor Hawkins OVER the first six months of this year, people in Albox have put 7,991 kilos of used clothes into specific recycling containers spread across the town, almost as many as during the whole of 2014.

East West Productos Textiles, the company in charge of emptying the containers, reported that locals have really started getting into the habit of taking their old textiles for recycling.

Between January and June the company collected 1,529 kilos from a container on the Albox-Chirivel road, 1,368 from Avenida Lepanto, 1,098 from

7,991 kilos of old clothes were collected in the first six months of the year Avenida America, 1,034 from Ramon y Cajal, 993 from Plaza San Francisco, 723 from the municipal nursery school, 637 from Calle del Muro and 609 from Avenida de la Estacion.

Mayor Rogelio Mena said the figures so far this year were very good and stressed the importance of recycling for the environment.

Better streets for Olula PEDESTRIANS will soon be safer in Olula del Rio thanks to a Provincial Council project to provide €240,300 of improvement works on pavements and paving.

The work will be carried out by Talleres y Gruas Gonzalez and will include new pavements and parking spaces on Avenida Macael, a

new pavement and surface repairs to the road towards the cemetery and extension of existing pavements in the area of the new health centre.

Gabriel Amat, head of the Provincial Council, stressed that the work will improve the town’s basic infrastructure and directly benefits local residents.

Firemen battle Tahal blaze MEMBERS of Albox fire brigade joined Infoca regional forest firefighting and prevention services on Saturday (August 15) to fight a fire in the Sierra de los Filabres, in Tahal.

The fire broke out at 12.30pm and was announced as under control by the authorities two hours later.

Although investigations into the cause of the fire, which affected an estimated 1.5 hectares, initial reports hinted that a car found burned in the area could be involved.

Ten aircraft, five specialist teams and five fire engines were involved in the operation to tackle the blaze, the authorities reported.

lars in Almeria Province based in Lucar, has held its third open day event, attract-

ing professionals from the agricultural and catering sectors, members of the general public and local authorities.

The two-day event, supported by Lucar and Almeria Provincial councils, provided guided tours of the installations, which produce an estimated one million litres of wine and use 400,000 kilos of grapes, with talks on the processes and technologies employed by cellarman Pedro Franco and wine expert Modesto Pou Sero.

Visitors, including Almanzora valley town and village mayors and provincial delegates Antonio Torres and Juan Antonio Lorenzo, were given three of the cellar ’s best-selling wines to taste.

The cellars have been holding open days since 2013, coinciding with the summer season when the area attracts many visitors.

M ORE t h a n 4 0 d i ff e re n t herb plants are surviving the summer heat in our garden, in shrub beds, the vegetable garden, on rockeries or in pots. Some are in full sun, others are in semi or dappled shade. Most importantly many withstand both extreme su m m e r a n d wi n ter temperatures.

Many of the herbs are used for cooking, refreshing infusions, and natural remedies for plants - and humans - as well as for their perfume, flowers and attraction for butterflies and other beneficial insects. No wonder herbs have been an essential feature of Spanish gardens s ince t i m e m e m o r i a l a n d cover most hillsides.

Herbs can be fitted into gardens of all sizes in a number of ways: • Planted in pots or larger containers, either within the garden or conveniently by the kit c h e n d o o r. O r o f course in a patio courtyard or the terrace of an apartment or penthouse.

VERSATILE: It’s amazing how much herbs can add to the garden and how multi-purpose they can be.

• In a dedicated herb garden with a squared, wagon wheel or raised spiral, or

medieval tied knot design.

• Alongside the vegetable plot or paths.

• M ixe d in w ith a lpines and succulents in a rockery.

• Mixed into the front and

mid depth of a mixed perennial/shrub bed.

• Creeping thyme and di-

chondra as lawns in shady areas.

• As internal hedges.

HOMES & GARDENS Rosemary, bay and lavender are especially useful.

• Mints are best planted in large, sunken pots or barrels as the roots can spread evasively. Or build up a collection of different leaved and flavoured varieties in a cluster of pots or containers.

• In the vegetable garden borage, cultivated and wild garlic, fennel and artichokes, tagetes menor not only brighten up a plot but are also useful comp a n i o n p l a n t s th at help protect vegetables from plagues like carrot fly, black and white fly and swarming beetles. A patch of comfrey has several uses. Fermented in a plastic barrel it produces a very useful plant feed. Some gardeners use it as a poultice t o acceler a t e t h e c u r i ng o f gardening or other sprains and cracked bones and get rid of the early signs of gout.

HARVESTING HERBS For cooking and salads, best picked fresh as required. Can also be sun-dried or cool oven- dried and then sealed in airtight containers. Also try freezing in ice cubes for use in soups and sauces.

Pick seeds such as coriander and anis just before fully dry and dry in the sun. If you leave them to fully ripen the seeds will fall in the first strong breeze.

For pot-pourri, pick a mix of leaves and flowers at any time of the year.

For ad d i n g t o o i l s, p ic k flowers like marigolds and hypericu m wh e n i n fu ll flower.

For infusions, pick fresh as required or sun dry in the summer and dry for winter use.

For distilling essential oils, t he easie st h e r b s t o u se in clude lavender, rosemary and geranium.

For enriching the soil or accelerating the compost heap, we find that comfrey and borage are excellent in this respect. Cut the leaves several times a year.

Tips for gardening on a budget EVERYDAY items can be recycled to save costs

By Carol Irving GARDENING needn’t mean splashing out on expensive accessories.

Recycling cartons and packaging can be a useful way of saving on essential gardening aids whose costs add up if you buy them from specialist gardening stores.

One way of planting seeds, for example, is by using cardboard egg cartons to make a seed-raising tray. These can also help the environment as they degrade naturally. Firstly, though, the egg carton pots have to be moistened and kept wet daily. Once ready to plant, cut out each egg cup and plant the whole ‘pot’ in the soil just as it is.

Don’t throw out the plastic pots which you get from plants either. They can be redecorated and used again for another plant. In fact, any container can be used for replanting as long as it has holes for drainage. So, tin cans, plastic bottles with the tops cut off, plastic tubs, old boots, bags, anything can be used.

Practically anything can be adapted and used for gardening… all that is required is a bit of imagination.

ALTHOUGH living in Spain means that we are blessed with the sunshine almost all year round, it seems that the home comfort of a carpet on the floor is still welcomed by British and Scandinavian expats.

Lots of apartments in Spain are now being fitted out wall to wall with luxurious carpet; whether it be for the living room or bathroom, trends show that the carpet is back! With lots of designs to choose from, stocks at furniture shops have been increasing in demand year on year, until now there are many colours and textures that can be incorporated into the Spanish home and lifestyle.

Much thought has gone into the serviceability of the designs so that you can have the best of both worlds, chic and comfort rolled into one, and easy to clean fabrics. Another big plus for carpet lovers is that a floor covering cuts down the acoustics and helps to reduce noise all round, so carpet is not just a pretty face on the floor but an asset.

If your room is not quite ready for the overall fitting, large rugs are a fantastic room enhancer for the cooler months and they can cheer up a plain grey marble floor a treat, giving more colour and character to your room.

THE University of Warwick has recently carried out a survey into the causes of separation anxiety to try to identify any common fa c tors . The s u r v e y showed almost 75 per cent of vets reported seeing up to five cases pe r month w ith the othe r 25 per cent seeing more than this.

Although she loves living in Spain, and has done for a few years, she really looks forward to a break back in Blighty catching up with everyone there. Daisy her dog does miss her though.

PET rabbits are animals that need lots of attention, especially in Spain with its extremes of temperature, as well as interaction with their owners. But many owners abandon them or pay them little attention, according to the Scottish SPCA. There have been 550 rabbits taken into care since the start of 2015 and as many as 728 rabbits were rescued last year in their areas. While children often stop paying attention to them as soon as the novelty of having a pet wears off, the rabbits become lonely and isolated and are left to languish in small hutches with only the occasional visit by owners.

Some owners complain that they don’t have time to look after their bunny, or say that the children have lost interest in taking care of them. Mike Flynn, chief superintendent of the SPCA says, “These poor rabbits are literally left suffering in silence, living a miserable and lonely life.”

In the UK, rabbits are the country’s third most popular pet but are, sadly, the most neglected, whereas in Spain they ranked seventh, but are typi-

The RSPCA recommends rabbits are kept in pairs and that there should be at least an hour’s daily exercise either in

a rabbit proofed room or garden, suggesting a run-exercise area that is permanently attached to the main shelter.

Playtime should also be part of the daily routine with more time spent with a rabbit that is housed alone. In total, the charity calculates that rabbit owners should expect to

spend around 10 hours a week on pet care.

While pet buyers may choose a rabbit thinking it’s easy to care for and doesn’t require too much time in terms of thought or time, it is clearly a mistake to ignore your animal and think it is enough to keep them fed and watered.

There are many reasons why you may not feel so bad losing €200,000 on the value of your home as this is not very tangible, but you would hate to lose €200,000 in cash, psychologically one loss is far worse than the other, but the reality is that you have lost the money in either case, which could have been avoided.

So the moral of my article this week is that you do not need to lose €200,000 or any amount of money, all you need to do is follow my free advice and arrange for a professional surveyor to inspect your home and get the best professional advice on how to maintain and maximise the value of your home.

It’s now a good time to sell your home and you will be safe in the knowledge that your home will sell for the best market price and your €200,000 will not be lost but safe in your bank account.

Emergency numbers MOTORISTS visiting Europe are generally confused about the correct emergency number to call, according to the RAC. A survey of motorists found that in the event of an emergency, most drivers thought they should call 111, which is actually the UK NHS non-emergency number.

Others thought the US emergency number 911 was the correct number. In Spain and all 28 countries of the EU (including the UK) 112 is the number to be dialled.

By Carol Irving A NEW high-performance model has been unveiled by BMW’s M Division that promises race track power combined with every day reliability.

BMW’s special models such as the BMW M3 range have focused not just on efficiency but on technology that allows drivers to power up their drive, on

or off the race track. The new BMW Concept M4 GTS is conceived on the race track but is actually road legal and features new technologies that will be released in mass production models in the future.

Making its debut at Monterey Car Week in California, the special designed model is limited in terms of the numbers produced but shows off what

is possible on the road with the latest technology, giving us a glimpse of where the automobile industry will be taking us in the near future.

One such innovation is the water injection system that increases output and torque but ensures the turbocharged engine’s stability as well as the carbon fibre reinforced plastic bonnet, which lowers the car’s centre of gravity.

Another is the rear lights OLEDs (organic light emitting diodes) technology which are more effective than LEDs in lighting up the way ahead, illuminating the full surface rather than just a single point.

The metallic grey exterior and wheels in alloy and acid orange complete the model’s futuristic vision of the road ahead.

BBC game show with The Stig A NEW game show, The Getaway Car, will feature The Stig from Top Gear.

The show, presented by Dermot O’Leary, will see various couples take part in a variety of driving challenges in order to win a substantial cash prize.

Successful couples will then race against the mysterious, helmeted driver, The Stig, to test their motoring prowess. However, the show’s format promises to deliver entertainment that will inevitably test the competitors’ relationships as much as their driving skills.

According to presenter Dermot O’Leary the show is really about the couple’s relationships and will no doubt lead to some interesting situations.

The 12-episode show will be shown on Saturday nights from next year.

PLAYED in the sweltering heat in July, the Two-Wood Pairs still attracted an entry of 23 teams. There were a lot of hard fought games with water being consumed by the gallon.

In the semi finals, Tony and Babs Davies won against Fereh Mehmet and David Horton, and

Keith and Linda Lester won against Mike and Fran Reynolds.

The final was a very close match that went to the last end with Keith and Linda eventually winning against Tony and Babs by 1 shot!

A great match to watch in spite of the heat.

By Tony Myles THE final Major of the year is now concluded and we can reflect on the successes and failures that we have witnessed at each location.

The Masters is always the first Major event and it is permanently located at Augusta National Park.

The outstanding player of the Masters and of the year was Jordan Spieth, who opened the competition with nine birdies

in the first round and remained on top of the leaderboard throughout.

In Campbell’s Major Wager our eventual winner placed large amounts on Rory and Jordan. Nobody risked anything on Hideki who was fifth.

The US Open was once again the domain of young Jordan. Still only 21 and claiming his second Major. The also-rans from the remaining 155 players included Louis Oosthuizen, Cameron Smith, Dustin Johnson and Branden Grace. The Major Wager punters skilfully avoided each of them.

The Open - When you play golf in Scotland you can always expect that the weather will have an influence and indeed it did just that to such an extent that the final round was delayed until the Monday and

o n t h i s o c c a s i o n J o r d a n ’s fans would have been in agony as they watched him four putt on a par three.

The plaudits go to Zach Johnson who collected the Claret Jug following his emotional speech. The other names in the frame included Marc Leishman.

Forum Golf sees a record score for Wendy Greaves AFTER more than 200 events in nearly eight years, Wendy Greaves became the first Forum Golf Society player to hit the magical nine under Par stableford score of 45 points, whilst cruising to an emphatic victory at Valle del Este on August 14.

Dave Vickers (second) beat Richard Price (third) on countback after both players achieved 40 points, a score that on virtually any other day would have been more than enough to secure victory. Marie Vickers (fourth), Malcolm Sibbons (fifth) and Dave White (sixth) also needed count-
