Record-breaking airport ALICANTE-ELCHE getting busier and busier

By Gemma Quinn July was the best month in history for Alicante-Elche Airport, with 1,250,395 passengers going through the terminal, an increase of 3.8 per cent over the same period in 2014.

According to airport operator AENA,

domestic traffic exceeded 129,000 passengers, 6.1 per cent more than in the same period last year, while international passengers grew by 3.6 per cent to reach more than 1,120,000 users.

The foreign markets which accounted for most passengers in that time period were the United Kingdom, with 508,980,

Norway (99,943), Germany (77,860), the Netherlands (62,350), Sweden (61,683) and Belgium (57,996).

The Alicante-Elche terminal handled a total of 8,341 flights, representing an increase of 0.5 per cent compared to July 2014.

Botched bank raid A MAN was arrested following a botched bank robbery in Elche.

The robber held two customers within the bank and and two employees at gunpoint while he demanded money.

The customers managed to grab the man and snatch the gun from him, which was found to have blanks inside.

GUARDAMAR is to abide by the judgement of the Superior Tribunal of Justice (TSJ) and will close the El Campico market, rejecting appeals by market management.

The market has operated without a licence for nearly two decades and Mayor Jose Luis Saez (PSOE) said it

will be closed, more than six months since the high court ruling against it: “There was already a decree closing the market with the previous government team. We are simply doing what we already had in place,” said Saez.

The mayor added that he had met with the manager of that market to inform him of the closing and is

waiting on technical reports on how best to proceed to close the business which draws hundreds of people each weekend on the undeveloped land just off the CV-895, close to the natural park of La Mata.

Although managers are trying to negotiate with the Consell to legalise the activity, it is unlikely to avoid closure in the meantime.

By Carol Irving ONE of Spain’s most popular festivals of the year, and probably one of the messiest, takes place in Buñol, Valencia, on Wednesday August 26.

About 40–50,000 participants are expected to take part in the 70th anniversary of the biggest food fight in which tomatoes are flung with abandon with no other objective than to have fun and get extremely messy.

The roots of this festival stem from one hot August day in 1945 when a group of young people were having fun on one of the floats celebrating the ‘giants’ parade in the

Elche calls for more emergency cover THERE is a growing need for Elche City to have two SAMU Urgent Care Service ambulances all year round.

Since the month of July, Elche has lost one ambulance which went to Santa Pola to

deal with the increase in the tourist population, but it has still spent half of its time in the city dealing with incidents as the other ambulance was in use.

The ambulance, known as ‘Dama 2’ and based in the re-

sort during the summer, carried out 110 primary care services in July. Of these 46 per cent were in Elche, forcing the SAMU to travel the 15 kilometres between the two municipalities to provide assistance. These two

vehicles must also serve Aspe, Hondon de las Nieves and Hondon de los Frailes, up to 30 kilometres away.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends an emergency vehicle for every

120,000 habitants and based on data from the National Institute of Statistics, there are a total of 312,486 residents in these municipalities of Elche, meaning there should be three SAMU ambulances.

THE tourism sector provided work for 39,157 people last month in the Murcia Region, a record amount in the industry.

By Gemma Quinn NEARLY 150,000 patients stop their treatment because they cannot pay for medicines.

It is the hardest part of the economic crisis, and the cuts, as it has been revealed, show a shocking number of people in Alicante Province recognise that in recent months they have been forced to abandon medical treatment because they cannot afford the drugs.

According to a report by the Ministry of Health, across the Valencia Region, 7.9

per cent of patients said they cannot pay for their medications and prescriptions.

The central government imposed a copayment for medicines to pensioners in June 2012 and just two months later eliminated more than 400 medicines, many frequently used with public funding.

Since then, there have been numerous warnings of the effects these measures have had on the health of people on lower incomes.

However, this is the first time an official ministry survey had put figures to the situation.

“Everyday you see this happen, patients who say they cannot take, for example, cholesterol medication because they simply do not have enough money,” said Victor Pedrera, head of Primary Care Medical Union.

“Co-payment was one measure to help prevent misuse of drugs or their accumulation in people’s houses, but everyone has now been affected,” he said.

There are now calls to alleviate the copayment in cases of greater vulnerability, for those like pensioners and single parents.

Patient’s warning about being referred to a private hospital BID to avoid to the waiting lists has cost Algorfa woman thousands and still no operation

By Gemma Quinn ONE woman has issued a warning to others about trying to avoid hospital waiting lists.

Violet Stanley from Algorfa has been on the waiting list at Vega Baja Hospital for an operation to remove gallstones for nearly a year. The list was so long that the hospital referred her to another, saying she could choose a centre where the waiting time was much shorter.

Violet chose a private hospital close by thinking she would get a better and quicker service.

Within days she was seeing a new doctor, having blood tests and x-rays, and discussing the forthcoming operation. Violet was also told she would need an MRI to check there was no loose stones or pancreatitis, but as she was at a private centre,

this would not be covered by the agreement with Vega Baja Hospital or her SIP card and she would have to pay. She agreed to cover the €750 cost.

However, just days later, Violet was in so much pain she returned to the hospital, as she had been told to do so as she was now their patient, which also meant she was now a private patient. “I was admitted and I thought they said it would be €150 but I got hooked up and settled and paperwork was produced for €1,500, which was just the deposit,” said Violet.

A later visit from the surgeon and Violet was told she would need an endoscopy. At her wits’ end and wanting to finally get rid of her pain and health problems, she agreed to pay the €750 for the procedure. “But then nursing staff came and

€2,500 bill is what Violet Stanley was left with after leaving a private hospital said they had made a mistake and the cost would be €3,500 so I told them to come and remove all my wires and to discharge me,” Violet explained.

She promptly left the hospital having already spent €2,500 and without having her gallstones removed, being considerably lighter in the pocket and with the same health problems.

However, her pain soon turned to anger as she returned to Vega Baja Hospital and spoke to a doctor in A&E. Their tests once again showed she did not have pancreatitis

and did not need an MRI or the endoscopy that the private hospital requested and were going to charge Violet for. “I could not believe it. It makes me wonder, were they just trying to perform these tests to get money out of me and how many other unsuspecting people have had unnecessary procedures and just paid without questioning it and just take their word

for it, which is what I did.” She continued: “I have spent €2,500 and had no operation and no explanation from the hospital.”

Violet, who is now back on the waiting list for her gallstone operation warned others to be cautious about choosing a private centre if given the option to change hospitals as your SIP card will not cover everything.

By Gemma Quinn A FIFTH person has died as a result of the intense heat sweeping across the province.

The Hospital of Torrevieja has notified the Ministry of Health of the death of a 61year-old male from heatstroke.

This is the fifth death confirmed as a result of the high temperatures, after the death of a woman of 83 years in San Juan de Alicante on July 9, the death of a man, aged 84 in Mislata on July 18, a male aged 47 in Torrevieja on July 28 and a 46 year-old in Valencia on July 29.

It is understood the man fell unconscious in a supermarket and when the SAMU emergency ambulance crews arrived he was already in a coma with a temperature of 42 degrees Celsius. He was admitted to the intensive care unit of Torrevieja

The 2015 Heat Wave Programme was launched on June 18 and as of Thursday August 13, the health departments of Valencia have treated 20 people for heatstroke. In the province of Alicante there has been 13 cases needing medical care.

The Health Department warns that those suffering from

chronic diseases, the elderly, young children and pregnant women are most at risk of the intense heat and reminds people to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables and drink lots of water and fluids, avoiding alcohol and caffeine.

They recommend against going out in the middle of the day where possible and limit extreme sports activities.

The new terminal, which was built four years ago at a cost of â‚Ź267 million, has seen continuous growth in the number of flights and passengers, with 2015 proving to

be a record year.

The lounges have a total area of 27,000 square metres, and 26 gates with 16 bridges connecting directly to the aircraft. The check-in area is 15,500 square metres and has 98 check-in desks.

The terminal also has an Automatic Baggage Handling System (SATE), with capacity to process 7,880 bags per hour.

International drug traffickers arrested RAIDS carried out across Alicante and Murcia

By Gemma Quinn AN international drug trafficking gang has been broken up with arrests made mainly in the provinces of Alicante and Murcia.

National Police officers have arrested 29 people acc us e d of be ing pa rt of a criminal group which was engaged in the acquisition, s a le a nd dis tribution of la rge c ons ignme nts of drugs, especially speed, ecs ta s y, ma rihua na a nd ha s his h, w hic h toge the r with other effects, were confiscated following 15 house searches; 13 of them in Spa in a nd tw o in D e nmark.

Of those arrested, 27 w e re in Spa in a nd tw o in Denmark, with various nationalities including Span-

29 drug traffickers arrested ish, British, Dutch, Danish, Irish and Austrian.

The investigation began in October 2014, when officers were able to identify in Alicante a group in charge of finding suppliers of narcotics, which in turn served as an i nt er m edi ar y wi t h buyers of illegal transactions.

After several months of research, one of the distribut or s of t he organi sat i on was stopped in Benidorm, al l owi ng new avenues of action to open up that led officers to several towns in the province of Murcia (Los AlcĂĄzares and Pilar de la

Horadada) and Alicante (Javea), where four other arrests were made.

More arrests were then m ade i n La Nuci a, Daya Nueva, Beni dor m and Elche.

In mid-July a further six people were arrested and in the 13 searches carried out in Spain, police intervened and recovered 36,700 grams of speed, 2,205 ecstasy pi l l s, 224,534g of dr i ed m ar i huana buds vacuum packaged, 170,530g of hashi sh pol l en ( 1,492 t abl et s) and 3,115g of hashish.

Agents also confiscated four shotguns, a dummy gun, a BB gun, a rifle, a revolver, a large amount of ammunition, six cars, two vans, one electric weapon and â‚Ź166,490 in cash.

Man in hospital after firework accident FIREFIGHTERS were called to deal with 50 small fires

By Gemma Quinn ELCHE’S Nit de l’Alba firework celebrations ended with one person seriously injured and 20 others with slight injuries.

The most seriously injured was a 49-year-old man who was taken to hospital after being hit on the head by a falling stick from one of the rockets.

Six of the injured were children; the youngest aged six, all

63,500 rockets were released during Nit de l’Alba being treated for minor accidents after handling fireworks.

Last year two people were seriously injured with a further 61 being treated.

Firefighters were called to deal with 50 small fires, mostly in the parks and garden ar-

eas with trees and plants catching light from sparking fireworks.

Nit de l’Alba saw 63,500 rockets released with around 3,000 of those making up the finale ‘Palmeral de la Virgen’ firework released from the top of the Basilica de Santa Maria at midnight.

The annual event brings thousands of visitors to the city to enjoy one of the most spectacular fireworks displays.

Death at Totana club A MOROCCAN man, aged 29, died on Sunday morning outside the Discoteca Millenium in Totana, Murcia.

It would appear that a scuffle started within the club which spilled out of the building to become a major street fight with as many as 30

people of different nationalities being involved.

The Local Police and Guardia Civil broke up the fight but found the as yet un-named man lying in the street having clearly been beaten repeatedly. Emergency services were unable to save the man and an autopsy is to take place.

Preparations in place for La Vuelta FIRST time in Torrevieja for the 80-year-old cycling race

MEETINGS: Various parties have been meeting to discuss the arrival of La Vuelta in Spain.

By Gemma Quinn PREPARATIONS are under way in Torrevieja ahead of the city’s staging of the leg of the La Vuelta cycle race at the end of the month.

Mayor Jose Manuel Dolon and councillor for Sports, Pablo Samper, said the launch of the ninth stage of the Tour of Spain on August 39 will be “a success” as the mayor explained that meetings have been held between the Local Police, political party representatives and Torrevieja’s cycle clubs to help “give participation to other bodies in deci-

sion-making and for us to listen to suggestions and initiatives that were raised.”

This stage of La Vuelta will leave from the Paseo Juan Aparicio and will run throughout the walk to go along Avenida de la Purisima, along the coast, to La Mata.

For this route, small minor works have been needed such as placing a ramp up Calle Ramon y Cajal and removing some street furniture so there is a path of at least four metres in width.

It is the first time the city has hosted a stage in the history of the 80-year-old cycling race.

By Gemma Quinn LOS MONTESINOS has had approval given to developing a new PGOU land plan.

The approval however has constraints and the govern-

ment is limiting the amount of land for development. By agreeing with the restraints, it means that the new PGOU would release just over half a million square metres of land.

The first planning document, released in 2010, released almost three million square metres of land allowing up to 13,000 homes to be built, which will now be severely reduced.

Sam has been an inspiration to others, a true rock.

THE first impression you receive from meeting Sam Bayley is warmth and openness as her smile tells you that everything will be OK. This is the philosophy that has made Sam strong, and she generates that in others around her.

Sam graduated in the UK with her Master’s degree in English Literature at Glasgow University at the age of 21. Later she began work as a merchandiser for C&A where her career took her to Dundee, London and Brent Cross.

Sam’s senior manager steered her away from what she originally wanted to do which was to become a buyer, as they had realised her skills were creative and so she succeeded in her role as merchandiser. In 1989 Sam’s parents moved to Spain, and so she decided to try it too, just for one year, but that soon became permanent.

Within that time she met Joe, who later became her husband.

Together they worked hard building up their furniture business, working long hours producing it and many hours spent at markets to sell their wares.

This is where success begins, as you only reap what you sow, and both Sam and Joe were busily planning for their future. During this time Sam also raised her family, five beautiful children, and still she managed to work the business with Joe working all hours around the clock.

Some years later, Sam noticed that things were not going too well in life for one of her daughters, Hannah, and there were problems that needed to be addressed to put things right. It takes a special person, like a mother to know when something is not quite right. Hannah was suffering depression

My grandmother was an amazing woman whom I looked up to, a light in my life.

which is a condition that many suffer which goes unnoticed.

Being a loving mother, Sam was quick to respond and began to study eagerly in order to offer help first hand. After some years, Hannah came back to the light with the love and strength that had been given to her by her loving family. Sam was so passionate about the need to raise awareness of conditions such as these that she decided to do much more to help.

The Mental Health Foundation is an organisation that Sam has raised money for by using her skills and also her sheer determination. Sam trained to do the London marathon after months of getting herself fit and earning a place to run. Despite the odds after tearing her calf muscle, Sam soldiered on to still enter the run with her two friends Jen and Kerry.

She recalls the emotions that flowed when she ran past Buckingham Palace and the Mall to the finishing line to earn her medal. Before this wonderful achievement, Sam organised a concert to

raise money for the Mental Health Foundation. Divas, Nikki Rae, Laura Elen, Jordana, and Laura Oldfield put together a spectacular show earlier this year which was a huge success and the total

fundraising amount so far has been a staggering €5,211.

This is an amazing contribution towards not only raising money but raising awareness of this type of condition. Sam is a strong believer that anything is possible; she is a tower of strength. Maybe it is because Sam practises mindfulness which is a guide to help your mind be in a better place, to be positive, not to look back or regret, but to live in the moment.

This is why Sam has been an inspiration to others, a true rock, within the family and the workplace too. When asked who were the people that she looked up to the most she said: “Paula Radcliffe for running, Hillary Clinton as she is an amazing woman, and Maya Angelou as there are many quotes that are so true by her.”

Today Sam’s daughter Hannah has a beautiful baby girl herself named Ella after her great grandmother. Sam added “Ella was my grandmother who was an amazing woman, strong and independent, and who I looked up to, and was always a light in my life.”

Sam Bayley is a replica of that inner strength and understanding that continues to radiate upon others around her.

Police unit offers immediate access USERS interact with Guardia Civil officers in real time

By Gemma Quinn TORREVIEJA’S mobile police unit has been on show in Paseo Vistalegre.

The OFIPOL office offers citizens immediate and direct access to the Guardia Civil and is also a safe space for people, offering an immediate point of

physical protection for victims of theft or assault.

Users interact with Guardia Civil officers in real time via video conferencing facilities and it is accessible 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It prevents citizens from actually having to travel to the police headquarters

to report a criminal act.

It is also adapted for wheelchair users and can be used by blind and deaf people.

Officers have been on call in the vicinity of the OFIPOL office to provide support and assistance to residents and holiday-makers.

Sport and sea on offer all year round MAR MENOR nautical tourism ‘needs more promotion’

By Gemma Quinn THERE are calls for nautical tourism on the Mar Menor to be better promoted.

President of the Nautical Station Mar Menor Maria Jose Segura told Minister for Tourism Juan Hernandez during a visit that the area was ‘a gem’ for nautical tourism but more needs to be done to promote it and help boost tourism. This was particularly relevant during the winter months to attract European athletes who cannot practise sport in their own countries due to low temperatures.

“Athletes from places like Norway want to go sailing all year, but in their own country they cannot. We want to bring them here,” said Segura.

Medical costs for domestic tourists GOVERNMENT still waiting for reimbursement

By Gemma Quinn THE Valencian Government is still waiting for reimbursement of the cost of medical treatment for domestic tourists.

Minister for Universal Health and Public Health, Carmen Monton, said the cost of treatment for Spaniards from outside the Valencia Region was more than €70million last year.

The Minister has called on the Central Government to initiate immediately the Guarantee Fund Assistance (Foga) which was approved in 2012 to offset this expense, but it is still not operational.

The Minister criticised this “financial exclusion” by the Central Government. Monton said: “On the one hand, the Government submits the Community to extreme underfunding and secondly, blocks the settlement of funds that are ours.”

This came after the death of a 32-year-old man who was gored in the back and chest during Bous al carrer in Museros (Valencia).

A deep-rooted love and tolerance of bullrunning in the Valencian Community’s three provinces is endangering the public, said PA-

PV spokesman Toni Moreno: “The four people who have died this year would still be alive if town halls and the Generalitat did not permit these events,” Moreno argued.

“These deaths cannot be considered accidents. Making the bull charge and ensuring it doesn’t get you is an essential part of the spectacle. At least 53 people in the Valencian Community have lost their lives during these popular events since 2000 and another 12,000 have been injured.”

The artificial coast STUDY reveals the Valencian Region has highest amount of coastline construction

By Gemma Quinn BARS; hotels; apartments; unregulated constructions; the coastline of the Valencia Region is the hardest hit by brick in Spain, being the autonomy with the highest percentage of construction.

A report by environmental organisation Greenpeace assessed the amount of development within the first 500 metres of coastline with Valencia having 51 per cent of construction.

Catalonia (44 per cent) and Andalucia (26 per cent) as the worst conserved regions, whilst Asturias presented a more positive picture in terms of environmental conservation with just 9 per cent of the coastline being developed.

The report analysed a wide range of indicators that put Valencia with a score of 7.9, meaning the preservation of the coast is the lowest in the whole country. It did recognise the

positive marine reserves however of Tabarca, the Columbretes and the Cabo de San Antonio.

The study also showed Valencia to have the lowest score in the management of agriculture, with 5.4.

The dependence on pesticides is the third highest and the presence of transgenic crops and the destruction of the garden because of urban growth are major factors that condemn

the Valencian countryside.

The study’s authors highlighted the strong presence of social movements organised around environmental issues in Valencia, protesting against fracking, waste dumps and waste management.

Greenpeace said that 8 per cent of Valencian households cannot keep their home at a suitable temperature and 13 per cent spend more than 10 per cent of their income on energy.

Beach bars closed in height of the season TORREVIEJA chiringuitos do not have licences

By Gemma Quinn TWO more beach bars have closed in Torrevieja in peak season by order of the Department of Planning.

In July, the town hall declared the closure of chiringuito Los Antonios alongside the Canal del Acequi贸n and

another on the beach at Los Locos, both with the same owner. He said he was given permission for the bars; however, the new ruling government said there is no documentation to support this and ordered their removal.

The owner tried to appeal but has since decided to com-

ply with the order and has voluntarily closed them down.

Meanwhile, local police are looking at the owner of a beach bar in La Mata that was issued a closing order for not having the correct licenses to open the venue, but remains open.

Community rallies to renovate school ALGORFA is making the most of the summer to carry out reforms on the Miguel de Cervantes public school.

Work has been financed by the government but with the parents’ associa-

tion AMPA donating €1,995 to purchase ceiling fans and spending €2,995 on renovating the toilets. The town’s festival committee has also donated €200 from a charity raffle to help fund

the improvements.

The approval however has constraints and the govern-

ment is limiting the amount of land for development. By agreeing with the restraints, it means that the new PGOU would release just over half a million square metres of land.

The first planning document, released in 2010, released almost three million square metres of land allowing up to 13,000 homes to be built, which will now be severely reduced.

GUADALEST: School probably has the best views in Alicante Province.

By Linda Hall PARENTS looking for small class sizes for their children may want to consider relocating to the picturesque inland village of Guadalest.

Despite thousands of tourists visiting the village each year, according to the National Statistics Office (INE) there are only 226 registered residents and Guadalest needs more children; one

more to be precise. If the state-run village school is to remain open it needs five pupils and so far only four have been registered for the next school year.

Unless another child can be found, the other four will have a long drive each day either to Callosa d’en Sarria, Benimantell or even as far as La Nucia.

“Five is the minimum allowed by the Valencian Community,” said Guadalest Mayor En-

rique Ponsoda.

Six children were enrolled last year but four finished their primary education and will now go to secondary schools in neighbouring towns.

Two remain and another two have been registered. The town hall has offered municipal tax breaks to encourage parents to enrol their children at the school which probably has the best views in Alicante Province.

By Gemma Quinn IT is one of the greatest challenges in the treatment of blood cancers such as leukaemia: identifying resistant residual cells that trigger a relapse in patients and to find a way to effectively eliminate them so that cancer does not return again.

step in this direction by applying a technique “to detect one cancer cell a m o n g 1 0 0 , 0 0 0 healthy ones” said Fabian Ta r í n , H e a d o f D i a g n o s t i c H a e m a t o l o g y.

Ta r í n s a i d m o s t haematologic cancers respond well to current treatments, “but there is a percentage of patients that may relapse.”

The residual resistant cells can hide in different organs and tissues and remain dormant for years without surfacing but when they do resurface, the secondary cancers can often be more aggressive than the first.

Childbirth classes WORKSHOPS for expectant mothers and their partners

By Gemma Quinn OVER 100 mothers, fathers and companions have taken part in Birth Support Workshops organised by a team of midwives at Torrevieja Hospital over the summer.

The objective of this initiative is to provide guidelines for assisting women during the pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period, and help the woman’s partner to feel an active part of labour and to be of help and support during that time.

The latest session took part last week in the hospital with the daylong session including a theoretical part and a practical session with the most suitable positions for childbirth, massages and use of balls and mats.

Participants were invited to share their expe-

riences and ask the professionals questions.

The hospital continually offers courses and workshops throughout the year to help expectant mothers and to break down any barriers and concerns they may have.

Workshops and seminars on breastfeeding, infant massage courses and exercise and yoga during pregnancy are some of the other activities available as the nursing team also invite pregnant women to view the facilities and delivery rooms at the hospital so they know what to expect. Comprehensive Care for Women manager, Noelia Rodriguez, stressed the importance of these activities “to help relieve stress and apprehension during the day of delivery to help make it a magical time.”

She uploaded the photo to the Facebook page ‘No eres de Petrer si no...’ (You’re not from Petrer unless...) and added the caption ‘You park where you damn well want and

don’t get a fine’ and made matters worse by managing to incorporate the word ‘cojones’ too.

Now the resident is the one in trouble under Spain’s Public Safety Law which is also known as the ‘Gag Law’ as she faces prosecution under the new legislation and a fine of up to €3,000 for using ‘unauthorised images or personal details’ of the security forces.

After warm days, now cool nights AFTER the hottest July in decades, August is proving to be a little cooler with Saturday’s overnight temperatures being the coolest so far this summer in Alicante Province.

Temperatures were down three or four degrees over previous days which led to a pleasant evening along the coast with thermometers failing to get much above 20 degrees on the coast and 13 degrees in some mountainous areas according to the Meteorological Agency (Aemet). Alicante City recorded 20.8 degrees, Benidorm 20.6 and Elche a welcoming 20.2 degrees. The lowest overnight temperature was 12.9 degrees in Fageca in El Comtat area.

The colourful display also provides a pleasant, shaded area which is appreciated by everyone walking across the old town centre in the hot temperatures.

Mayor of the town, Oscar Medina, explained in a statement that this initiative launched by the council had been designed as an original, unique and innovative new feature of Torrox, which is also expected to become a tourist attraction.

He pointed out that the installation was set up by a local company and will remain in place until the winter.

Paola Moreno, Deputy Mayor of Torrox, said the project had coincided with the local fair in the district El Morche, which meant that a large number of tourists had already been able to enjoy this new umbrella extravaganza.

FROM fancy folders and trendy backpacks to USB drives and other techie gadgets, ballooning back-to-school costs are pinching families’ budgets. The cost of everything school-related keeps going up, which makes trying to pay everything else in the household a struggle.

A recent report from the UK revealed that 60 per cent of parents are struggling financially because of back-to-school expenses, which is causing great stress as a result.

School costs nowadays range from books, uniforms, voluntary contributions, registration fees and after-school activities. But they can also incorporate the cost of expensive technology as some schools now require that parents pay for technological advances like iPads or

Before dashing out to the shops, check what is left over from last year. Why bother buying a brand-new pack of pencils, pens and highlighters when you have loads sitting in your kitchen drawer? Likewise, making an inventory of your child’s wardrobe can also prevent overbuying.

Parents can often save money too by shopping online, or remembering that items are priced highest at back-to-school time, so if it is possible to wait until the end of September sales, it would be worthwhile. And as always, make a list of everything you need to buy and stick to that list.

Spain expected to break record for car sales this year NEW vehicle deliveries in Spain are predicted to move past the one million vehicles threshold for the first time in five years, thanks to a strong economic rebound and the government’s subsidy programmes.

According to ANFAC, the country’s industry association, the 2015 forecast finds passenger car registrations increasing by 23 per cent to 1.05 million vehicles.

In 2014, a total of 855,308 cars were delivered in Spain, which was an 18 per cent rise on the previous year.

The ANFAC guideline sees all registrations, including industrial and commercial vehicles, jumping 22.7 per cent to 1.21 million units. ANFAC President Jose Luis Lopez-Schuemmer said: “The economic forecast is good, we expect 3 per cent GDP growth this year, and the jobless rate will also fall.”

Are You Affected By Changes To UK Bank Compensation Scheme?

Do you keep large deposits in bank accounts?

If so, you need to understand to what extent you will be protected in event of bank failure.

For peace of mind you should establish what investor protection you have with each of your banks, and how it works. The same applies for capital you have held in other financial institutions like investment firms, insurance companies etc in the event of institutional failure. If you have any concerns about the level of protection you should establish if there are other institutions or investment structures which offer a higher level of protection, or if there are steps you can take to feel safer.

Within the EU, banks deposits up to €100,000 are protected. So if a bank fails, any deposits you have up to this limit are refunded.

In the UK, the Financial Services Compensation Scheme is based on the EU compensation scheme and is available to savers if a UK regulated bank or financial institution fails.

At present, the limit per institution (i.e. across all accounts held with the

Two changes to the Financial Services Compensation Scheme have now been announced.

In July 2015, a new rule was introduced to protect savings of up to £1 million for a period of up to

six months to cover ‘life events’, such as selling your home, inheritances, compensation payments etc; situations that could lead to you having a temporarily high balance.

From 1st January 2016, the standard protection amount is reducing to £75,000, because the exchange rate has changed. The UK regulators have a duty to review the amount every five years to ensure the protection is similar to the rest of the EU. It is worth noting that an institution is not the same as a bank. So Halifax and Bank of Scotland are one institution, for example.

If you have more than £75,000 held with a single UK regulated institution, the excess over £75,000 will not be protected. You may wish to consider reducing balances

so that these are spread to provide more protection (the actual balance should be lower than this to give cover to any interest to be added).

Those who have less than €100,000 with the same institution regulated elsewhere within the Eurozone are not affected, as the Euro amount has not changed.

However if you have bank deposits over €100,000 you should consider ways to protect your savings from the risk of institutional failure.

Note that since the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey are not in the EU, banks which are regulated there are not covered by the EU scheme or the UK Financial Services Compensation Scheme.

These jurisdictions have their own compensation schemes, with a limit of £50,000.

Besides spreading your deposits, you can move capital into

alternate investment arrangements that provide a higher level of protection.

For example Luxembourg offers a state controlled investor protection regime which provides maximum security to investors without limit.

You should also ensure that you have adequate diversification across different investment assets, because this decreases risk as well as increasing the potential for improved returns.

Using headlights AS part of a new series, we answer some common driving questions, kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers.

DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS: Since 2011 all new cars have them.

A LOT of cars are seen with their lights on during the day but these lights are usually different to ones referred to as ‘headlights.’

Since 2011, all new cars and trucks sold in the EU were required to have Daytime Running Lights (DLR) which turn on automatically with the engine in accordance with a new directive designed to improve road safety. The rule then became mandatory for trucks and buses from August 2012.

The DLR is a new method of illumination with low energy consumption, but it is not designed to provide additional lighting for the driver, but rather they work to improve the vehicle’s visibility to other road users.

With regard to headlights, there are times when you must turn your lights on during

the day and in certain locations, as marked by road signs, such as when you enter a tunnel. During the winter months when the sun is lower and visibility becomes problematic as a result, the DGT recommend having headlights on during the day.

Under normal circumstances there is no mandatory requirement to have your headlights on during the day and that also applies when driving through road works. However, they should be used in certain road conditions, such as when travelling on a reversible lane, which can at times, be used by traffic in either direction. These lanes are more common near to city centres where the flow of traffic can alter to give more space for vehicles in one direction.

Fact: This debris was not identified as such but we mustn’t let truth get in the way of a good story. This same media focused on trivia when damning evidence pointed to Washington and Kiev complicity.

To this can be added the peculiar US, Ukraine and Dutch government ‘no comment’ response when asked to release vital evidence that would assist in getting to the cause of the tragedy.

Mainstream media intention was clear: The most deceptive lie of all is the half lie with deliberate intention to deceive. It is common knowledge that Ukraine’s BUK missile systems are Russian made. In the same way NATO armaments are mostly American made.

During the weekend of August 16-18 alone, four participants were killed in bull running events and a total of 10 individuals have died taking part so far this summer.

While bull running and bullfighting activities remain controversial, when so many spectators or participants are killed or injured through these celebrations, there surely has to be some serious attempt to prevent further fatalities.

A genuine war hero who deserves every benefit going JUST a line to say how proud the family of Ernest Hall, former Far East prisoner of war, who was 100 years old, (as per your Costa del Sol edition front page story 30 July–5 August) should be, and how humble we his fellow countrymen and women should be.

A real hero who failed to mention in the article that all those freed from the Japanese POW camps were made to pay for their ‘subsistence whilst in enemy hands’ by the British Government after the war!!!

Absolutely shocking, but true!

One would hope Mr Hall is receiving his winter fuel allowance, summer cooling benefit, and anything he requires in his old age.

Festival rip-off MY granddaughter and her partner recently attended the Dreambeach festival at Villaricos.

They had paid for tickets to get in but, to their amazement and disgust, they were charged €18 (eighteen) to leave!! Not only that but they were charged the same amount for just two drinks.

As they were just visitors to Spain, and spoke no Spanish, what could they do but pay up? Needless to say, they will not return to a Spanish pop festival and will tell their friends to do likewise.

MAY I through your Letters column express a big thank you to the lifeguards/socorristas at the Tropicana Beach, El Faro.

Today when we were leaving the beach, my partner tried to climb on to a small ledge leading on to a pathway. Unfortunately, she lost her balance and fell backwards onto some small rocks.

I was behind her and managed to prevent her head falling on to the rocks, which would have made things more serious.

However, she landed on her left hip and was unable to get up.

This incident took place approximately 20 metres from the lifeguard lookout post and they were on the scene immediately. They took my partner to the lookout post and treated the bruise on her hip.

Throughout they were very professional and even offered to escort my partner across the main road to our car as I was laden with beach chairs, parasol, towels, etc.

The downside of all this was despite the beach being very busy and a cry from my partner as she fell backwards, only a young Spanish couple came to see if they could assist.

Disappointing to think it could have been something more serious yet no one bothered to come and see if they could help.

Thank you again the lifeguards/socorristas.

More rubbish AFTER reading a recent letter on your page about the rubbish piling up in the street, I went to the local council to ask about ours.

We have been looking at a smelly pile of waste overflowing for four bins and a skip for two weeks.

Load of bull WITH regard to Mike Walsh’s article in last week’s edition, I have no doubt that there may be 1,400,000 Ukrainian passport holders wanting to move to Russia; however, there is a very strong possibility that the vast majority of these are actually ethnic Russians.

Wherever you go in the former soviet states you will find large numbers of ethnic Russians. To this day they gen-

erally remain loyal to Mother Russia and firmly believe that the country they are living in should remain part of the Russian Federation (Putin’s new Soviet Union) and it’s no surprise that with so many actual non-pro-Russian people in Ukraine many of whom are looking toward Europe, the ethnic Russians would be disenchanted There are 8,334,000 ethnic Russians in Ukraine making up 17.3 per cent of the population. In a snap poll last year, 73 per cent of Ukrainians said they favoured moving closer towards Europe.

I believe in freedom of the press and freedom of expression (pity it is not actually the case in Mike Walsh’s beloved Russia as all media is government controlled in one way or another).

CAN you or any of your readers tell me why roadworks to main streets through towns are carried out in the middle of summer when it causes the most hassle?

In the winter when it would cause very little congestion, you never see anyone fixing the roads! But as soon as the tourist season starts, they block all the traffic… do they do it on purpose?

REGULAR SWIMMING: A great way to stay fit, but can have some adverse effects on your health.

By Gemma Quinn ACCORDING to a recent survey, 24.2 per cent of Spaniards say they swim regularly and in the hot summer months there is no better way to stay fit.

However, swimming can have a few adverse effects on your health, number one being chlorine.

Allergies and asthma The chlorine in swimming pools can cause allergies and asthma, particularly in young children. Whilst the chlorine fights the germs and bacteria in the water, it can dry out skin.

The Spanish Academy of Dermatology said the skin’s pH is 5.5 but the water’s is seven which leads to the skin becoming dry. To help avoid the problem have a good shower immediately after swimming and apply rehydration creams at the end of the day.

Allergies can be caused by chloramine, the result of the chemical reaction between chlorine and other organic fluids in the water, such as saliva and uric acid from urine, which may be in the water.

A study published in the American Chemistry Society said that in large amounts, chloramine can result in heart or brain damage.

Skin complaints Hard water is widely found

along Spain’s Mediterranean coastline and these water reserves have large amounts of minerals, particularly calcium and magnesium, which leads to more cases of eczema and dermatitis.

To help prevent skin problems among children in summer, try and minimise the effect of pool chemicals and products on their skin by using barrier creams that combine the calming and repairing properties of oatmeal extract and copper and zinc.

At the end of the day shower using special hygiene products for atopic skins.

Red eyes Eyes can become bloodshot after too much swimming so wear goggles and sunglasses at all times and remove contact lenses to prevent bacterial infections. If eyes are sore at the end of the day, wash them in a little sterile saline solution.

Green hair Copper sulphate which is added to water to kill fungi is what often reacts with blonde hair turning it green, not chlorine. A hair mask before swimming will help prevent hair reacting with the water.

THERE are so many fitness and health gurus, articles and products available in the health and fitness industry that quite often you can become extremely confused and rightly so.

The diet industry in the UK alone is worth two billion. So there are a whole lot of companies out there making an absolute fortune from consistently bombarding us with all sorts of fitness and health solutions. There really is NO QUICK FIX to getting slim, fit and healthy.

Common mistakes • Restricting your food I have done regular weigh-ins with clients for years; I can confirm that not one of them has ever had a basal metabolic rate under 1,150 kcal. This is the amount of energy in calorie value that their body needs to function if they were to do nothing more than sleep on a sofa all day.

So my question is, how on earth do you expect your poor body to function on a daily restricted intake of 600-800 calories? So your body goes into panic mode, thinks it is being starved and slows the metabolism right down to preserve fat stores.

• Over-training Training at the gym for hours to the

point of exhaustion, is counter-productive.

Mix your sessions to include resistance training, cardio and High Intensity Training for around 45 minutes to an hour per session three to four times per week; this is plenty.

• Alcohol Your biggest saboteur, it is laden with calories and has no nutritious value whatsoever.

Your body cannot metabolise alcohol as it views it as poison, so as you are working off the alcohol calories, any food that is sitting in your stomach is busy being stored as fat.

My top four tips: • Plan a long-term lifestyle change instead of following random fad diets.

• Incorporate regular effective exercise into your life - minimum three hours per week.

• Eat at least three well-balanced nutritious meals per day.

• Limit alcohol to a weekend treat.

Over-training is not good.

Floats will hand out wine, sangria and local snacks to the music of accompanying bands One of the highlights of the festivities is the ‘Gran Cabalgata del Vino’ on Saturday August 22 when hundreds of barrels of locallyproduced red wine will be poured over everyone and everything, so be prepared to get drenched!

The parade will start at 7pm from Avenida de Reyes Catolicos, going along Avenida de Murcia, Jardin de la Glorieta and on towards Avenida de Levante before finishing back at Avenida de Murcia. It is traditional to wear white clothes, maybe not the best idea, but showers are provided afterwards in the Mercado de Abastos.

If you want to avoid a soaking and prefer drinking wine than being covered in it, go along to the fiestas tonight (Thursday) when the traditional Cabalgata Parade begins at 8.30pm.

Decorated floats parade with the participants handing out samples of wine, sangria and local snacks while dancing to the accompanying bands. The route starts from the Plaza del Rollo finishing at the Mercado de Abastos.

The fiestas finish at 8pm on Sunday August 23 with mass and a parade to return the statue of Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion.

Torrevieja to host stage of cycling race for first time NINTH stage of Tour of Spain leaves on August 30 GET-TOGETHER: A chance to meet the MABS team.

Cancer coffee morning MABS cancer charity will be hosting its next coffee morning on September 25.

The event will take place at the information centre on Camposol B, Mazarron. Starting at 11am, it is a chance to meet the MABS team and see the work they do and the services they provide to cancer patients and their families and carers.

A selection of homemade cakes and savouries will also be available.

The information centre is on Avenida de los Covachos, Camposol B.

Doing it for the dogs SAT animal charity is holding a fundraising night on September 19.

It will be held at Fairwayz Bar in Dolores, which has allowed the charity to use the venue and they will provide a supper for everyone who attends. Local Irish group Bardoi will also be performing.

All money raised will go towards the SAT fund for building new kennels to

house the ever growing number of dogs.

WHEN dog owner Julita goes away every year it is for a good four weeks to see friends and family abroad.

Although she loves living in Spain, and has done for a few years, she really looks forward to a break back in Blighty catching up with everyone there.

THE University of Warwick has recently carried out a survey into the causes of separation anxiety to try to identify any common factors.

The survey showed almost 75 per cent of vets reported seeing up to five cases per month with the other 25 per cent seeing more than this.

That comes to one case every single week for every vet in the country! Separation disorder is rarely the reason that a pet dog owner will take the dog to the vet, since most owners do not understand the problem.

One of the worrying aspects of the survey is that 57 per cent of owners stated they could not keep their pets because of the barking or destruction.

Male dogs between one and three years of age from the working or terrier breeds were most prone to these problems.

This does not mean that you will never encounter barking or destruction if you have a female collie aged four.

Of course all surveys will produce different results. I personally find that questions prepared by companies with a commercial interest and asked by vets who know little if anything about triggers, which cause behavioural problems, can be very misleading.

By David THE Dogman PET rabbits are animals that need lots of attention, especially in Spain with its extremes of temperature, as well as interaction with their owners. But many owners abandon them or pay them little attention, according to the Scottish SPCA. There have been 550 rabbits taken into care since the start of 2015 and as many as 728 rabbits were rescued last year in their areas. While children often stop paying attention to them as soon as the

novelty of having a pet wears off, the rabbits become lonely and isolated and are left to languish in small hutches with only the occasional visit by owners.

Some owners complain that they don’t have time to look after their bunny, or say that the children have lost interest in taking care of them. Mike Flynn, chief superintendent of the SPCA says: “These poor rabbits are literally left suffering in silence, living a miserable and lonely life.”

pet but are, sadly, the most neglected, whereas in Spain they ranked seventh, but are typically more cared for. UK legal provisions are not adequate either, with no laws regulating the size of hutches or whether they should be kept in pairs.

The RSPCA recommends rabbits are kept in pairs and that there should be at least an hour’s daily exercise either in a rabbit-proofed room or garden, suggesting a run-exercise area.

Playtime should also be part of the daily routine with more time spent with a rabbit

that is housed alone. In total, the charity calculates that rabbit owners should expect to spend around 10 hours a week on pet care.

While pet buyers may choose a rabbit thinking it’s easy to care for and doesn’t require too much in terms of thought or time, it is a mistake to ignore your animal and think it is enough to keep them fed and watered.

A new study released by property expert’s website Alquiler Protegido sh o ws t h a t a t l e a s t 1 7 p er cent of holiday homes customers fall victims to scams.

Coinciding with the ‘summer boom’ in terms of property renting, several non-professional and mostly illegal websites are us ed b y p r i v a t e c i t i z e n s an d agencies, offering apartments which do not include the features they advertise.

HOUSING STOCK: A few areas in Spain have seen an increease.

Not all down on the property stock market EVEN though the property stock has not ceased to decrease since 2010, there are a few areas of the Spanish territory in which the stock has experienced the opposite.

This is the case of areas such as the independent Spanish cities in Africa, Ceuta and Melilla as well as Alava and Biscay in the Basque Country, where the property stock has seen a stark increase from 2010 to 2014, according to the most recent data

In Ceuta and Melilla, the stock saw an increase of 18.1 per cent, totalling 744

properties for sale.

In the case of Biscay and Alava, stock increased by 11.62 per cent and 4.76 per cent, reaching 3,227 and 2,309 properties for sale respectively.

The number of new unsold properties began to increase strongly in 2007 in Spain, where there were 413,642 unsold homes in total and this growth was interrupted in 2009. Since then, the property stock has seen a decrease of 17.5 per cent.

Alternatively, when advising a potential buyer of a property, I advise them on the true condition of the property and any extra costs they would have for repairs etc in addition to the asking purchase price. I advise them on what they should offer on the property bearing in mind my inspection, which in my experience results in a reduced offer on poorly maintained property.

In today’s market, the average starting price for well maintained luxury villas and apartments in Spain start around the €1 million price range.

However in my many years of experience the same villas or apartments which have not been well maintained and updated can lose up to 20 per cent of their value, which in real terms means losing around €200,000, a substantial amount of money to lose.

Imagine you did not lose €200,000€ on your home but are happily on your way home from the bank with €200,000 cash in a bag but somehow along the way you lose the bag and money.

I’m sure you are going to be very upset for a very long time and seriously question why you decided to walk home with €200,000 cash and your family will always think what they could have done with the extra money.

There are many reasons why you may not feel so bad losing €200,000 on the value of your home as this is not very tangible, but you would hate to lose €200,000 in cash, psychologically one loss is far worse than the other, but the reality is that you have lost the money in either case, which could have been avoided.

So the moral of my article this week is that you do not need to lose €200,000 or any amount of money, all you need to do is follow my free advice and arrange for a professional surveyor to inspect your home and get the best professional advice on how to maintain and maximise the value of your home.

It’s now a good time to sell your home and you will be safe in the knowledge that your home will sell for the best market price and your €200,000 will not be lost but safe in your bank account.

By Carol Irving A NEW high-performance model has been unveiled by BMW’s M Division that promises race track power combined with every day reliability.

BMW’s special models such as the BMW M3 range have focused not just on efficiency but on technology that allows drivers to power up their drive, on

or off the race track. The new BMW Concept M4 GTS is conceived on the race track but is actually road legal and features new technologies that will be released in mass production models in the future.

Making its debut at Monterey Car Week in California, the special designed model is limited in terms of the numbers produced but shows off what

is possible on the road with the latest technology, giving us a glimpse of where the automobile industry will be taking us in the near future.

One such innovation is the water injection system that increases output and torque but ensures the turbocharged engine’s stability as well as the carbon fibre reinforced plastic bonnet, which lowers the car’s centre of gravity.

Another is the rear lights OLEDs (organic light emitting diodes) technology which are more effective than LEDs in lighting up the way ahead, illuminating the full surface rather than just a single point.

The metallic grey exterior and wheels in alloy and acid orange complete the model’s futuristic vision of the road ahead.

By Tony Myles THE final Major of the year is now concluded and we can reflect on the successes and failures that we have witnessed at each location.

The Masters is always the first Major event and it is permanently located at Augusta National Park.

The outstanding player of the Masters and of the year was Jordan Spieth, who opened the competition with nine birdies

in the first round and remained on top of the leaderboard throughout.

In Campbell’s Major Wager our eventual winner placed large amounts on Rory and Jordan. Nobody risked anything on Hideki who was fifth.

The US Open was once again the domain of young Jordan. Still only 21 and claiming his second Major. The also-rans from the remaining 155 players included Louis Oosthuizen, Cameron Smith, Dustin Johnson and Branden Grace. The Major Wager punters skilfully avoided each of them.

The Open - When you play golf in Scotland you can always expect that the weather will have an influence and indeed it did just that to such an extent that the final round was delayed until the Monday and
