After meeting the mayor Antonio Fernandez Liria and local councillors, she was shown infrastructure improvements that have been carried out by the Comunidad de Regantes Cuevas del Almanzora.

The association of local growers has

1,800 members who cultivate - and have to irrigate - the crops they grow on 5,400 hectares of land inside the municipality.

The Fiñana-born politician praised local projects that have allowed growers to make exemplary use of water.

By Carol Irving AUGUST sees one of the most spectacular events in the racing calendar in Spain take place on the sandy beaches of Sanlucar de Barrameda, Cadiz. The beach in the Bajo de Guia area of town becomes a horse racing track during August evenings with pure thoroughbred race horses running at full speed during the late afternoon, creating a stunning backdrop of some of the most beautiful coastal scenery in Cadiz.

Originally, the races were organised by owners of horses used to transport fish from port to market. With time, and the new trend for ‘English-style’ horse

PEDRO SANCHEZ, Secretary General of the PSOE socialists, will be spending part of August in Mojacar.

Although the exact dates have not been disclosed for security reasons, this visit repeats the pattern of other years when Sanchez and his family have stayed in the town. The PSOE leader’s wife is known to have fallen in love with Mojacar some time ago and although the family also visit other parts of Spain each summer, they have returned every year since then.

Sanchez, his wife and daughters will go later to Vielha in Valle de Aran (Lleida), a strategic choice with Cataluña’s September 27 elections already looming on the horizon. Before then Sanchez has also scheduled a meeting with party leaders in Almeria Province.

Ada Colau, Mayor of Barcelona, will also be spending part of the summer in Almeria Province, although she is bound for La Isleta del Moro in Nijar. Again, the exact dates of her stay have been kept quiet for security reasons.

Vera-Garrucha train makes a detour THE tourist train between Vera and Garrucha no longer crosses nudist residential zones.

The route was not changed to spare the passengers’ blushes but to shield the naturists from the jeers and derision of

some of those using the train.

Naturist association Veraplayazul expressed satisfaction at the town hall’s decision to modify the route. “This will bring an improvement in coexistence as well as respect for lifestyles,” said a

statement from the association.

Veraplayazul, however, lamented that the town hall did not personally advise the association of its decision to change the route, especially as the issue was prompted by a complaint from members.

Eightyear-old drowns AN eight-year-old boy lost his life after falling into an irrigation water deposit in San Isidro (Nijar).

Although the emergency services arrived immediately they could do nothing to save the child’s life. He did not know how to swim, witnesses explained afterwards.

Calle Sarajevo, where the accident occurred, is in the new part of San Isidro and the two-storey homes there are surrounded by greenhouses, countryside and the huge pools used for watering crops.

Residents in the area said that the eight-year-old was with at least one other child when the accident happened and they could not understand how they got through the metal fencing that surrounds the deposit.

This complied with safety regulations and recently passed a security check on all the water deposits used by members of the local cooperative.

Ideal idyll PLAYA DE LOS MUERTOS in Carboneras is the beach that most Spanish tourists would like to visit this August.

That at least was the outcome of a survey carried out by www.playea.es to find the 10 most desirable beaches in Spain. The reason for Los Muertos’ popularity is its inaccessibility, according to participants in the poll.

Electro-Latino festival falls flat RESIDENTS suspected something was amiss

By Linda Hall THE Terreros Beach Festival in San Juan de Terreros was called off for reasons “beyond the organisers’ control.”

All ticket-holders will get their money back, they pledged.

Supermarkets, bars, restaurants, shops and businesses in Pulpi and San Juan de Terreros were looking forward to custom from at least some of the 10,000 fans attending the twoday event each day.

They suspected something was wrong days before, some residents claimed afterwards.

There were only a few signposts and not all of the area where the festival was due to be held had been cleared of scrub

and vegetation, they said.

Rumours that advance sales were disappointing were rejected by Laura Marin, a representative from the organisers Latino World Tour.

The 2,500 tickets that were sold would not have paid the overheads, she admitted, but maintained that the 3,000 lost sales in Almeria and Murcia would easily have covered costs, without taking into account another 3,000 tickets at the door.

They and the town hall had no choice but to suspend the event, Marin said, and although Latino World Tour did not present all the necessary documentation this was because they knew by then that the festival would not take place.

“We paid an impresario to engage performers but we learnt that they had only received 20 per cent of their fee.

We couldn’t pay them again and we have lodged a formal complaint.”

A helpline has been set up explaining the steps that should be followed for reimbursement of the tickets.

The four-year Puerto-Ciudad project was formally an-

nounced in the Almeria Province Official Bulletin and approved by all official bodies.

Development will centre on the unused section of the port between the first San Miguel breakwater and the Levante quay, integrating the zone with

the city and entirely changing its role.

Installing restaurants and shops has already been mentioned but proposals will be revealed in the Plan Especial that the Port Authority is now putting together.

Animal protection confusion cleared up in Nijar NO circuses with animals, but bullfighting is okayed

By Linda Hall ANIMALS will have greater protection in Nijar but bullfighting continues.

An amendment was added to an IU motion banning the use of animals in all public spectacles, fairs and circuses.

This exempts High School (Haute Ecole) horse displays and bullfighting that are already permitted by Junta de Andalucia laws.

“There is no bullfighting ban in Nijar,” said the mayor Esperanza Perez Felices. “We felt the need to include this amendment to clear up widespread confusion in the town.”

Nijar’s decision to introduce animal protection regulations arose from a formal complaint about the way animals in a visiting circus were treated, explained deputy mayor and IU spokesman, Alexis Pineda. Despite eluding the new ban, there will be no

Migrant rescues triple in 6 months MARINE rescue services went out 45 times

By Linda Hall ALMERIA continues to be a preferred landfall for the people-trafficking mafias.

Four out of every 10 emergency operations in the waters off the Andalucia coast during the first half of this year were carried out and co-ordinated from the Almeria’s Centro de Coordinacion de Salvamento Maritimo.

Put another way, Almeria’s marine rescue service went out 45 times between January and July and saved 1,077 immigrants trying to reach the coast in the unseaworthy boats known as pateras.

These callouts were 63 per cent higher than during the same period last year. One of the biggest res-

cue operations occurred in June when the centre co-ordinated the rescue of 99 people aboard two boats found drifting 50 nautical miles (92.6 kilometres) off Ceuta, Spain’s enclave in North Africa.

Like the majority of immigrants hoping to enter Spain clandestinely, they were all from sub-Saharan Africa. This is further evidence of a change in the origin of illegal immigrants, said Almeria’s Immigration and Borders Unit (UCRIF) which identifies and returns them to their countries of origin.

Although the people-traffickers continually change their routes, 57 per cent of migrants were intercepted in 2014 were from Nigeria and other sub-Saharan countries, compared with barely 20 per cent in 2013.

Unblocked spring boosts flow CLEARING the obstructed source of the Celin spring has increased the flow of the Arroyo stream.

Following the changeover at Dalias Town Hall after last May’s municipal elections, council employees began clearing the Arca passage, sending 20 litres per minute of the Celin water to the Arroyo.

“This is vital, particularly during the summer months because water sustains agriculture, which is one of Dalias’s principal sources of income,” said local mayor Francisco Gimenez.

Drug fines earn taxman €2million THE number of fines for drugtaking in public places in Almeria fell by 23 per cent in 2014.

Despite the improvement on 2013, more drugs are consumed on the street in Almeria than in any other Andalucia province apart from Malaga. Almeria’s 7,997 fines outstripped all of those imposed in the Castilla-La Mancha last year although the region has a population of more than two million compared with Almeria Province’s 701,688.

Conservative estimates calculate that Almeria fines will have earned Hacienda at least €2 million under the old system which began at €301, rising to €30,050.

Raising awareness of diabetes Our Euro Women series is featuring women who have made a success of their lives in Spain. These outstanding ladies have been shattering glass ceilings whether in business, charity work or sports.

Anne Bowles has a busy life supporting diabetic sufferers and fundraising for charity.

ANNE BOWLES is a woman who possesses an incredible amount of energy and enthusiasm which has been the key factor in how she has achieved so much in her life here in Spain.

After marrying Frank in England in 1975, Anne was already showing the world what talents she had when they both began singing in a barbershop choir in Surrey. She tells me that was one of the best periods of her life as she enjoyed socialising, organising, and travelling to many singing events, entering into all she did with a passion.

Anne and Frank decided to make a new life in Spain, so they bought a home here in 1975, and in no time at all their social life was booming. One unfortunate setback was that Frank suffered with diabetes and there was little help in Spain at that time for anyone with similar problems.

A friend of theirs, Martin, also had diabetes and this was a condition that needed to be addressed as well as also raising awareness in others. It was this realisation that initiated the good work that Anne is continuing to do today.

The Diabetic Support Group (DSG) was founded by Anne and Frank Bowles with the co-operation of Martin and Barbara Rhead in 2003 and the group has helped hundreds of sufferers come to terms with their condition and lead a normal life.

Anne is a believer that knowledge is power, and this was her

With much help from the local Lions group, the organisation began its operation with the added support of Dr Francisco M Gomez Trujillo of the Beafranin Clinic in Fuengirola, who had studied in the USA, and also a Finnish doctor, Dr Matti Tolonen, a nutritionist.

After years of helping others, Anne also became a member of La Cala Lions and both her and husband Frank were

active in organising fundraising events such as golf tournaments and other functions. Frank was a golf fanatic, so he was approached to write about golf, which then led to bigger things. Anne and Frank began another project.

Together they were heavily involved in the inauguration of the Costa del Sol Golf News in 2005, which grew from strength to strength due to Anne’s networking and massive input to the growth of the business. She juggled her

commitments with the Lions and her diabetic support group with her social networking that made the Costa del Sol Golf News a household name, and still she had the energy for more.

In her free time she still performed and organised events for the Barbershop Choir Spain, and raised money for charity too. Sadly, some years later she lost the love of her life, Frank, but that has made her stronger, as she remembers how he believed in her and gave her the confidence to achieve so much.

Anne went on to be President of La Cala Lions last year and within that time raised €80,000 for various beneficiaries. When asked what kind of people she preferred to be with, she said “I like positive people and those with a good sense of humour. Life is precious so we have to rise above difficult situations. I like people who are firm but fair.”

Anne has granted many wishes of others, and asked if she had a wish that she would like granted, she said with her usual sense of humour “Yes... to have long, curly hair and no wrinkles.”

It is no different at sea, especially when a boat’s crew or passengers throw packages overboard on sighting a Guardia Civil maritime unit.

Officers patrolling Cabo de Gato began fol-

lowing a small launch that was hugging the coast and laden with well-wrapped brown packages.

The boat made a classic U-turn on spotting the Guardia Civil boat and its two passengers began throwing their cargo overboard but were soon intercepted. The two men aboard the boat were arrested, its cargo impounded and the floating packages recovered, sources said.

president of the transition was unveiled recently in the presence of Mayor Domingo Fernandez, town councillors and Diputacion members. They were accompanied by the late president’s brother, Jose Maria Suarez, and the journalist Jose

Maria Martinez de Haro.

He was especially proud that Huercal-Overa was paying tribute to a man who gave so much to Spain, Domingo Fernandez declared. “Without any doubt Adolfo Suarez was an engine of democracy,” he added.

Round numbers in Vicar JUST one person made a significant difference to Vicar.

The population stood at 24,999 until Diego Cuevas Santamaria, an ophthalmologist from Malaga, went along to the town hall to register on the town padron.

The addition of his name brought the population up to 25,000 and Vicar’s mayor, Antonio Bonilla, and councillor and town hall spokeswoman, Luz Maria Fernandez, were there to welcome him.

The local authorities were aware at the beginning of last month, when there were 24,962 people on the padron, that the town would top 25,000 before the end of the summer.

With additions and removals since Diego Cuevas’ inscription, Vicar’s population has now reached 25,006 although this figure remains provisional until it is officially confirmed

Reluctant to let go TOWN HALL calls for reversal of decree granting independence to Balanegra Ilifrin

By Linda Hall BERJA is still not resigned to losing Balanegra.

Now an independent municipality with a registered population of 2,835, Balanegra was formerly part of Berja as an Autonomous Local Entity (ELA) with its own council.

This is how things should remain, believes Berja Town Hall, which has lodged a formal appeal with the Andalucia Upper Court (TSJA), calling for a reversal of the independence decree that was announced by the Junta de Andalucia regional government last June.

“At present Balanegra only complies with one of the four legal requirements for becoming a separate municipality,” claimed Berja mayor Antonio Torres.

A TOTAL of €250,000 has been allocated for the upkeep and repairs to Guardia Civil headquarters throughout

Almeria Province.

The central government’s Interior Ministry will provide half the cost and the remain-

der will be met by the Almeria Diputacion provisional government, announced the latter’s president Gabriel Amat.

“The fact that a Diputacion with all its responsibilities and workload should support and explicitly recognise the security forces in this way is something to be grateful for,” said Francisco Martinez Vazquez, Junior Interior Minister.

“This will improve working and living conditions for officers,” he added.

The annual agreement between both institutions goes back to 2014 when the Diputacion expressed interest in helping to solve maintenance problems at some Guardia Civil headquarters.

The initial proposal was approved by a joint monitoring committee of two representatives from the Almeria Diputacion and two from the Guardia Civil, plus special advisers.

Wastewater going to waste say growers LINKS needed to El Bobar plant

By Linda Hall GROWERS in the Bajo Andarax area northwest of Almeria city are crying out for water.

Meanwhile, around 1.5 cubic hectometres of wastewater finds its way to the River Andarax and eventually to the sea.

The Federacion de Regantes de Almeria (Feral) - a federation of growers who use and

pay for irrigation water wants the publicadministrations to step up investment in treating wastewater from upstream towns.

If waste from Rioja, Pechina or Viator were adequately processed this would provide growers with 1.5 cubic hectometres of purified water that could be used for 300 hectares of crops during the

growing season.

This compares favourably with the 1.2 hectometres of water that growers in the Poniente area receive from the Beninar reservoir, they pointed out.

First, however, all these towns will have to be linked to the El Bobar plant which is currently being enlarged precisely for this purpose, a Feral spokesman said.

By Linda Hall FOLLOWING a disagreement with her partner, a woman returned home to find the locks changed.

Unable to get into their property on the Nijar-Retamar road, she called the National Police who sent a patrol to the house.

The woman’s partner opened the door to her and the policemen, who by then had noticed that the door to the garage had three huge ventilation ducts let into it.

Their curiosity aroused, they investigated further and once inside were confronted by 102 marihuana plants at various

stages of development. There were also lamps, reflectors, industrial filters and other equipment necessary for intensive marihuana cultivation.

The male, who is a smallscale trafficker supplying customers in Nijar, was arrested and charged with drugs offences.

MOJACAR: Good traffic flow and easy parking.

Signs show the way MOJACAR Town Hall has continued its municipal renovations plan with new vertical and horizontal street signs.

Employees from the Public Works department have been busy marking out the parking area in Plaza Rey Alabez in the town’s old quarter, ready for the summer season.

Signs now warn of the hazardous curve ahead on the road down from the town and others have been erected on both sides of the road at La Parata.

Speed bumps have been installed in Calle Finisteree and Marques de Chavarri to discourage cars from speeding, which is especially important in a residential area where the population triples during the high season.

Calle Marques de Chavarri is also the location of the new hotel that opened in the Marina de la Torre complex.

In coming weeks, the council intends to place more vertical signs in the Sopalmo neigh-

bourhood, indicating the entry and exit to the new parking area.

Parking spaces will also be marked out.

“It is vital that these works are carried out,” said Public Works councillor Agustin Montoyas. “As a tourist municipality Mojacar must always be in perfect condition for those who visit us. We must also ensure that there is good traffic flow and easy parking in our beautiful town.”

City trees reduced to torn splinters WORKERS tore them out with a digger

By Linda Hall RESIDENTS in the Plaza de Toros district complained that Almeria City Council has hacked down their trees.

“We have been getting calls from people who are scandalised at the way the trees have been destroyed,” said councillor Ines Plaza from the PSOE party.

“They were there for 20 years and provided the neighbourhood with shade, but now municipal workers have torn them out with a digger.”

The trees were removed to remodel pavements but have been destroyed in the process, Plaza said. “They can’t be replanted because were reduced to splinters, although that could have been avoided if they had been removed correctly.”

It was inconceivable that the council should destroy the few existing trees in Almeria City where vegetation and shade are so necessary, Plaza declared.

Keep it neat and natty OWNERS of vacant lots in Huercal-Overa have just a couple of days to tidy them

up. Some have not done this for years and a municipal edict dated July 8 gave own-

ers one month to comply. If they failed to do so, the town hall will step in and do it for them before passing on the bill.

“Dumping litter and rubbish on private plots or public spaces is strictly forbidden,” Huercal Mayor Domingo Fernandez’s announcement reminded residents.

This particularly applied to privately-owned land where it is not the public services’ remit to enter.

A separate edict advised the Huercal population that rubbish should not be put out for collection until 8pm and, unless it consists of glass or plastic, should be put into rubbish bags.

Large household objects can be put out on the 11th and 26th of each month, and left beside the rubbish containers without hindering traffic or pedestrians.

A committee wants the statue to be taken to Nijar in the run-up to the October fiestas before being escorted back to Huebro in pilgrimage or romeria a week later.

“This will give much more weight to the romeria,” said an official statement. Instead

of overshadowing the Huebro fiestas, this would bring more people without interfering with the traditional timetable, it argued.

Huebro adamantly rejects the plan that was conceived not in the village but in Nijar to which the tiny municipality belongs. Relations have always been close between both localities but sharp words are now being exchanged. “The idea is to add to the fiestas not take away from them, as some are claiming,” the statement concluded.

In at the deep end at municipal pool THE municipal swimming pool in Olula de Castro, which opened three months ago, is now closed.

The closure of the €200,000 pool which became a reality after 20 years of proposals has nothing to do with water shortage but was caused by its faulty construction.

A month after the pool opened to the public, the lining began coming away from its sides although residents went on swimming there. The lining has continued to fall, leaving sharp edges that were a poten-

tial hazard, and the council decided to close the pool.

Repairs will cost around €17,000 that the council which took over the town hall after the May elections - maintains should be paid by the builders.

The way the work was carried out and the quality of the materials used were the cause of the problem, said the mayor Christian Quero.

“The repair cost is too high and the town hall can’t pay this and nor should it have to,” Quero added.

Exports written in stone ANDALUCIA’S marble exports totalled €120.7 million between January and June.

This was 36 per cent more than during the same period in 2014, according to the regional government, easily outstripping Spain’s overall increase of 15 per cent. The same Junta report showed that 45.5 per cent of Spain’s natural stone exports were from Andalucia.

Most of that was quarried in Almeria Province and 98.6 per cent originated in Macael.

It is not too often that we receive good news about income tax, but the Spanish government has announced income tax cuts twice in one year now. This is a welcome development for taxpayers, and an encouraging sign of how the local economy is improving.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced the reduction in personal income tax on 2nd July.

The new tax rules were then approved and published in the Spanish Official Gazette on 11th July 2015. The tax cuts extend to both scale and savings income tax rates and are backdated to 1st January 2015.

Only the state portion has been reduced with the new law. The Autonomous Communities are under no obligation to change their own rates, so it is likely that those established in 1st January 2015 will remain in place at the regional stage.

There are no regional variations for savings income tax rates.

Spanish non-residents Non-residents who earn income in Spain also benefit from the new tax reform.

For general income, the tax rate charged on EU/EEA residents reduces from 20% to 19.5%. For those resident outside Europe it remains 24% as before.

The tax rate applied on savings income is cut from 20% to 19.5%.

The government calculates that these measures will constitute an additional saving for taxpayers amounting to €1,500 million. It is in a position to bring the tax cuts forward because of the improving Spanish economy and increased tax collection in the previous months.

Cilla dies at home in Spain, aged 72

ITV prices falling THE price of obligatory ITV vehicle inspections (MOTs) in Spain can differ by up to 82.2 per cent for diesel cars or 170.2 per cent for motorcycles depending on the region, Facua consumers’ association has reported.

Facua spokesman Ruben Sanchez explained that all Spanish regions apart from Madrid set maximum fees which private and public inspection centres must stay under, to which the traffic authority charges of €3.90 must be added.

Madrid is the most expensive region for inspections with an average fee of €53.30 for cars, and the cheapest is Extremadura at €29.25.

Sanchez said that Castilla y Leon had reduced car inspection fees by 20 per cent and said he hoped other regions would follow suit.

Other regions which have reduced fees include Andalucia (0.2 per cent), Mallorca (0.3 per cent), Cantabria (0.1 per cent) and Galicia (1.6 per cent).

SINGER and TV presenter Cilla Black has died at her home in Spain, aged 72. The much-loved star passed away on Saturday, August 1, at her home in Estepona on the Costa del Sol. The coroner confirmed on Tuesday, August 4, that the star died following a stroke. She had been sunbathing, and lost her balance as she stood up, hitting her head as she fell. The blow knocked her unconscious, and she would not have suffered during the stroke that resulted.

Cilla’s career spanned more than 50 years, from huge hits in the 60s with Anyone Who Had a Heart, and Alfie, to a staple of Saturday night prime-time TV in the 80s and 90s, presenting Surprise, Surprise and Blind Date.

Born Priscilla Maria Veronica White, she changed her name to Cilla Black, but became a beloved household name simply as Cilla.

She was discovered when working as cloakroom attendant at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, and her distinctive singing voice won the support of The Beatles, who championed her career in the early days.

Although retired in recent years, she was still regularly heard from in the media, often accompanied on nights out by her good friend and fellow scouser Paul O’Grady.

In 2014, BAFTA honoured her with an outstanding contribution to television award.

ELCHE’S Mystery Play, or ‘Festa’, is one of the most renowned theatrical performances in the world. The sacred musical drama depicts the death, the passage into Heaven (known as the Assumption) and the crowning of the Virgin Mary. It is performed every year in two acts on August 14 and 15 in the city.

More than 300 volunteers are involved in the play each year. It is sung entirely in Valencian and some Latin and has been performed at the Basilica of Santa Maria for centuries. Its origins are believed to date back to around the 13th century, although some historians would put its origins at nearer the 15th century.

The Mystery Play is also famous for its split level stage which includes the vertical ‘celestial’ stage, which descends from the dome of the basilica. The play is part of the city’s identity and heritage and the perseverance and affection of the people of Elche have converted the Mystery Play into the last surviving performances of its kind.

CAMPILLOS has joined the growing list of Malaga towns that have banned circuses and other attractions with animals which could encourage animal cruelty.

The UN estimates there are currently 46.1 million inhabitants in Spain, a figure which predictions say will drop to 45.9 million by 2030 and 44.8 million by 2050. In the second half of this

century, the population of Spain is expected to slide below 40 million inhabitants.

The authors of this study explained that, in any case, these predictions would depend on the rate of fertility of the country, as a small change could produce huge differences after a few decades.

There are currently around 7.3 billion inhabitants worldwide.

Record fines for auto industry FORMED as recently as 2013, Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia, CNMC (National Markets and Competition Commission) has been investigating the auto industry in Spain.

WITH Greece having reached an agreement which ensured a bailout, keeping the country in the Eurozone, the relatively weak Euro has managed to trade within a tight range. Business, consumer and economic sentiment seem to be higher than ever and, as analysts forecast, Mario Draghi’s quantitative easing measures could bring about a much-needed boost to inflation.

In recent developments, comments from Germany’s independent economic advisers that countries should be able to leave the Euro as a ‘last resort’ could imply that the worries are still not over for Greece. The Syriza party has been criticised for plotting to leave the Eurozone as it was also revealed that the former finance

minister had a blueprint prepared for Greece to run a parallel banking system including reverting to the Drachma.

Markets will look for further direction in

currency movements, as the focus turns towards monetary policy in the major economies. With the US and the UK having signalled the possibility of likely interest rates hikes in the next

few quarters respectively, the Euro could come under sustained pressure. Having been forced to inject further liquidity into the economy to boost deflationary pressures in the Eurozone, the single bloc currency could be considerably volatile leading up to and after the Federal Reserve FOMC meeting, which was scheduled for July 29. Should the Federal Reserve send out a hawkish tone and an outline/framework to exit its monetary easing policy, the Euro will bear the brunt of it, weakening further.

It has been a roller-coaster of a month for the Euro as it touched eight-year lows against the Pound as GBPEUR touched a high of 1.44.

Volatility for the near term looks set to continue – and in the Euro’s case, things are not looking very bright. Having recovered to levels of 1.40 against Sterling, the Euro has traded within a tight range although the current scenario could just be the calm before the storm

Profits boom SPANISH-owned AENA airports authority has announced that its profits have increased by a staggering 80 per cent to €276 million, thanks in part to taking over Luton Airport, a rise in passenger numbers and higher sales in retail.

In the whole of 2010, it saw just 33,000 passengers pass through its ter-

minal and only budget airline Ryanair used its facilities for a while. When that airline pulled out, the local government subsidised three flights a week but even they were soon withdrawn.

Now the so-called ‘Madrid South’ airport (it is ‘just’ 125 miles from Madrid)

which was looking for offers in the region of €80 million, has been sold in part to a UK/Asian consortium for just €10,000 (£7,000).

The sale, which includes the runway, control tower but not the terminal or parking area, has attracted a few Chinese

companies who may be interested in investing further so that the airport becomes a major entry point into Europe.

It may be just one of the many failed projects to emerge following the recession, but this one at least may one day rise like a phoenix from the ashes.

Trusted independent financial adviser I HAVE been a financial adviser for close to 30 years and in that time there have been many changes affecting how I earn my living.

Possibly the largest of these has been the growing ability for private investors to research and arrange their own financial affairs using the internet. Yet despite this, demand for trusted independent financial advice has never been greater.

Police lose public’s respect BOYS and Girls in Blue have only themselves to blame LEAPY LEE SAYS IT

OTHERS THINK IT LET me state from the outset, that I do retain a certain amount of sympathy for officers of the law. According to some of the crime reality shows, the abuse they have to contend with can be truly horrendous.

Another thing that becomes glaringly apparent is that most of the respect the public had for the police is now pretty much nonexistent.

I am actually old enough to remember my utter shock when I saw the police referred to as ‘cops’ in an English newspaper. Prior to that it was only in American publications that they were referred to in this somewhat derogatory manner. So what’s gone wrong?

Where does the fault actually lie for this change in the public’s attitude toward modern-day law enforcement? Well, with apologies to the Boys and Girls in Blue, I think you have only yourselves to blame.

The problem with the police is that their

trust and respect previously enjoyed by the ‘Blue Lamp’ Dixons of the past. Cases like the Wimbledon ‘honey trap’ in the Rachel Nickell/Colin Stagg fiasco and the Jill Dando/Barry George affair, have slowly stripped away the public’s often blind faith in British justice.

And remember... these are only the cases you hear about. What about all the innocent ‘little people’ who are serving time, merely to look good on an officer’s arrest and conviction record?

I myself became a victim of this unacceptable practice, when a four-page witness statement, which would have most definitely helped my self-defence intentions, was mysteriously whittled down to a few lines that bore no resemblance to the original, which had simply ‘disappeared!’

No, I’m afraid the police have long travelled past the point of no return, and the days of respect and trust for this previously-admired institution have gone forever.

ART is not about understanding, it is about how it makes you feel, I have always remembered that Colin Bird A weekly look Each week, Colin brings his slightly off-the-wall view of the world to the pages of EWN in his own irreverent style.

I AM an art lover. Not because I am knowledgeable or that I have an appreciation for any particular subject matter. No, it’s just that I envy those who are able to pick up a brush or palette knife and convert a blank canvas into something that is pleasing to the eye.

Many years ago, an artist acquaintance - who was then of the abstract school - asked me if I liked a particular piece he had produced. I confirmed I did, but admitted I did not understand it.

It is not about understanding, he admonished me, it is about how it makes you feel. And I have always remembered that.

My Dad was fairly artistic - drawing, painting and making useful stuff and I have wondered why I inherited none of his talent. Was I a foundling discovered by my parents on the doorstep one morning? Am I in fact the milkman’s son? Perhaps I was selected for greater things? In which case I am still waiting.

Driving at speed on busy roads, even within legal limits, puts people’s lives in danger and whether it is tourists or commuters racing down Spain’s highways, drivers need to be well aware of the dangers and never let their guard down, especially in the chaos of the August holidays.

Taking the utmost care keeping speeds sensible, showing patience and good manners, and being fully aware of your surroundings and the behaviour of fellow drivers is essential to coping with driving in Spain this summer.

When a ghost town comes back to life it sings and swings!

Ric Polansky Ric Polansky moved to Mojacar in 1969 as a pioneer developer. He reads extensively and has travelled in South America panning gold and looking for El Dorado.

IT once was a vibrant village, back in the 1900’s, teaming with downtrodden miners and their families. But, when the mines ran out everyone left.

It became a ghost town; a deserted hill top of ruins baking in the heat and rotting.

On the far side of the map, down on the beach property prices were rising and finding anything with views was getting impossible until Paul Polansky scouted out and bought El Pinar. Paul had not just a unique vision for strange lands to develop but he gave them their life lines of infrastructure. He advertised for a young couple to join him in Spain for a special adventure.

They would be given a place for a bar but had to get it up and running. Out of the thousands he picked the right combination. Day and night Roland and Barbara pleased clients and built walls and patios.

If a visitor made it there they would get the super sales treatment and buy.

Derelict sites abounded and you could buy them, barter them, trade in your old plane, car, or

But, bubbly vivacious Barbara became tragically ill and they decided to sell. Various owners have

triumphed. And time’s stuttering steps moved from beer hall to gin palace.

Right now I am quite sure it’s arrived at its pinnacle. Super excellent food provided by a real English chef, Dean Hill, outstanding service, by Julie Justice and her staff and shows that keep you riveted to your chairs and sharing the love.

My wife and I were totally knocked out. It was a concert played out right in front of us while gorging ourselves and being totally “wowed” by the show, by none other than the “king of swing” Tony Justice! He became Frank Sinatra and I became mesmerised.

It was a hot day but a cool breeze continued to whisper to us. Behind the stage is a huge pool with a cool Alhambra effect.

The wine chilled just right. As we sipped our way through my thoughts roamed back to eating picnics amongst the ruins. My how the place has evolved into “fitting into the past and still being modern.” Wedding parties bounce in creating swarms of laughter and need be served right away to put something else in their cake holes.

From Russia, with experience and first-hand knowledge WHILE Mike Walsh does address some topical subjects areas quite sensibly, I do find that he gets a bit carried away with his comments when it comes to Russia and Putin.

Putin is ex-KGB and probably committed quite a lot of dirty deeds during his time with this organisation.

I worked for 14 years in Russia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Kazakhstan. I have first-hand knowledge and actual experiences on which to base my opinions relating to this subject.

Leap too far IN response to an article written by Mr ‘Leapy’ Lee in your 16-22 July 2015 issue, women historically have been subjected to co-ordinated efforts by governments to control their fertility, including sterilisation abuse. Indeed in 1849, the US proposed sterilisation for ‘undesirables’.

Other reasons included those deemed to be mentally ‘unfit’ to have a child and for economic reasons, such as in 1965 when 30 per cent of the women in Puerto Rico were forcibly sterilised because there were ‘too many workers’.

Are dog owners in Fuengirola selfish?

Well informed?

With regard to dogs here in Fuengirola, it seems to me that some of the dog owners in this town are the most selfish and ignorant that I have come across.

There are many dogs on my urbanisation. People think “Oooh, wouldn’t it be nice to have a dog?” Then they get one, and tootle off to work each day leaving it to bark all day long for the pleasure of us poor retired folk to endure. Then they come home and take them for a walk and let them poop all over the place.

I am sick to death with the amount of excrement that covers the pavements, it’s like a minefield here. There are supposed to be fines for those who do not clean up after their dogs, but I’ve never seen or heard of anyone ever being caught and having to pay these fines, have you? Maybe you could let us know?

It’s time for Fuengirola to introduce dog wardens to implement these fines and bring these selfish owners to book once and for all.

Bite back REGARDING the letter Bitten to Death, I can sympathise with Catherine as I am also bothered by mosquito and other types of insect bites.

Firstly, my husband has installed mosquito nets on all windows and

doors. Secondly, we find our neighbours’ conifers are a haven for mosquitoes. Therefore, we purchase insecticide from the garden centres specifically to prevent the infestation and spray the trees accordingly. This does help to reduce the mosquitoes living in them.

Thirdly, some years ago whilst on holiday in Spain, we met up with a doctor friend and he was concerned at the swelling around one of my ankles, an allergic reaction to insect bites. The spots become like large boils and can cause swelling. He gave me some Claritin antihistamines to take. I found that I didn’t seem to have more bites whilst I was on that holiday.

My friend advised me that I was probably still being bitten but the tablets were preventing the reaction.

My own doctor then prescribed Claritin for me to take whilst on holiday.

When collecting my prescription, the assistant kindly informed me that I could buy Loratadine tablets cheaper.

This is the ingredient that relieves the symptoms of hayfever, pet and other

Campo noise I READ your article on page 4 entitled ‘Time to keep noise promises’ (Almeria edition). Do we in the campo not also have a ‘derecho a dormir’ (right to sleep)? Who will protest for us when the many dog sheds around here have wall-to-wall dog barking lasting all night because it’s too hot for them to bark in the daytime?

We hear that in Mojacar there also are restrictions on bars and restaurants’ noise levels, but there seem to be no restrictions outside town where people also live. Surely people everywhere are entitled to some sleep, not just in the towns.

I’M not surprised that Joseph Billet was dumbfounded by Mike Walsh’s throwaway reference to the 100 scientists supposedly killed in the MH17 disaster.

I hope Joseph means that he is dumbfounded that Mike should expect us to believe such an absurd bit of conspiracy theory, but I have a nasty feeling that he means he is overwhelmed

by Mike’s deep knowledge of the world and what makes things happen.

In fact, in Mike’s latest article, he wheels out all the nonsense he has churned out many times before.

Everyone knows that most people in Europe did not want World War II to break out. However, any intelligent reading of the history of the 1930s shows that Hitler caused the war, by continually pushing for more power and territory. He got away with it for a long time, just because Britain and other nations were reluctant to take the unpopular step of declaring war.

Does Mike think we should not have done that? And has he stopped to think what the consequences of a Nazi takeover of the continent would have meant?

He is right in one thing. History is indeed repeating itself, with Putin grabbing land and intimidating his neighbours, just as Hitler did.

The US economy does not depend on perpetual war. And what on earth is Mike trying to prove by calling the US a small country that would fit into the Sahara, while in fact it has about 300 million citizens?

Let’s have no more of this sort of rubbish!

Carrying a load AS part of a new series, we answer some common driving questions, kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers.

SAFELY STORED: Any load must not project from your vehicle.

MANY people ask about rules regarding carrying a load in cars. The N332 team clarify that if you are driving a vehicle that is carrying a load, you have to make sure that the load is restrained properly.

Local restraint is not just about making sure that the load does not come off, it is about making sure that the load does not shift in a way that makes the vehicle unsafe to handle or allows the load to crash into the driver’s cabin which may cause injury or death in the event of a traffic accident.

The Spanish Traffic Law requires that any load carried on or in your vehicle must not be placed in a way that makes your vehicle unsafe or unstable. It must be

secured so that it won’t move or fall from your vehicle while driving; including driving consisting of emergency braking or turning suddenly.

The law states any load must not project from your vehicle in a way that is likely to injure a person, obstruct the path of other drivers or pedestrians or damage another vehicle or anything else. It must be restrained using an appropriate load restraint method.

Anything on the back seats must be secured with seat belts but it is advisable not to carry anything in the car, you should always use the boot. In the case you need to carry a load in the vehicle, use the seat belts to secure it or use a car net.

Is Community responsible for drains?

I LIVE on an estate more than 30 years old and my property is what we call in the UK mid-terraced. On three occasions in the last few years, I have had drainage/sewage contractors come into my house and through a trap in my kitchen clear out effluent and waste which accumulates be low my hous e a nd t he neighbouring properties as As you describe it, this seems to be a problem with Community drainage and sewage systems. If your neighbour is reluctant to act, you must approach the Community.

WITH the wedding season in full swing, a survey by You & Your Wedding (the UK’s leading bridal brand) has revealed that, despite the tough economic climate, brides are more determined than ever to have the wedding of their dreams - at a time when the average cost of a wedding last year was over £20,000 with 50 per cent of brides expecting to go over their initial wedding budget.

Hardly surprising, then, many newlyweds now start married life in debt. Or that some go to ever increasing lengths to recoup wedding costs by selling on eBay items bought from their gift list to generate cash!

BIG DAY: It’s time people focused on the marriage rather than the wedding.

But it’s not just the newlyweds who run up costs. Someone I know of went to five weddings last year, a couple of which also involved stag ‘dos.’ The total cost (presents, accommodation, food, drinks etc) he reckoned amounted to several thousand pounds (one wedding alone left him with a bill for almost £1,000).

He’s been engaged now for a couple of years, but still can’t afford even the most basic, ‘no frills’ wedding for himself - mainly because he’s constantly being invited to other people’s.

But isn’t it about time people focused on the marriage rather than the wedding? After all, when all’s said and done, a wedding lasts only one day. With weddings such Hollywood-style productions nowadays, is it any wonder everyone forgets why they’re actually there, and why a few years later they’ll be experiencing that other procedure called

‘divorce.’ With the same people complaining about the cost of living, renting because they can’t afford to buy, their children’s tuition fees etc.

But then, a fool and his money...

They say it’s the bride’s big day.

And there’s me thinking it’s two people getting married! Call me a nostalgic but, please, less stage management and expense, more commitment and sobriety!

As we all know, an OTT celebritystyle wedding isn’t the fail-safe recipe for a happy-ever-after scenario. At the wedding of someone else I know of, it was just the two of them, a couple of passers-by they invited in (whose names they didn’t know) and the registrar. And, yes, they’re still happily married.

RESEARCHERS at Spain’s University of Granada, in collaboration with two Italian universities, have developed ‘super spaghetti’ which they claim has more fibre and protein than regular pasta.

The University of Granada said this enriched pasta helps reduce cardiovascular risk by being prepared with functional flours.

It has been created with the Technological Research and Development Centre of Functional Food (CIDAF) to demonstrate how new technologies can get clean functional flours using whole grain cereal, avoiding the formation of waste products in the milling process. Air classification is used to divide the flour into different fractions without altering its properties. These fractions have different chemical charac-

Tongue piercings can cause damage to teeth DENTISTS say tongue piercings are causing dental problems with the studs or bars in the mouth potentially leading to fractured teeth, receding gums, and loss of bone.

More than half (51.9 per cent) of the young adults with piercings who participated in a recent study complained of swelling in their mouth, while 45.7 per cent had issues with bleeding. Fourteen per cent had fractured teeth, and 26.6 per cent receding gums.

ENTHUSIASTS of Spanish gastronomy and hand made items have a date on August 8 in Alcontar.

The first Gastronomy and Craftworks Fair of Alcontar, will have more than 40 exhibitors from all across the Almanzora Valley region, and with the aim of establishing itself as one of the must-attend events of the summer season.

The event was presented by Head of the Provincial Agriculture Department, Oscar Liria, together with Mayor Antonio Ramon Salas, in a ceremony at the Provincial Council.

“This fair has arrived to stay and we are hoping it will help put the spotlight on our town during the summer, as well as being a great showcase for small and medium-sized businesses from the agri-food and

artisan’s sectors,” said Mr Liria.

Participants will be able to enjoy products brought by Spanish ham producers, marble artists, stone artisans, agriculture works, cheese producers and bakers, as well as residents who will tell stories about antique techniques to produce soaps, bread and cheese amongst other items.

The Alcontar Council will adapt the main square with air con and sunshades to make the participants’ experience more comfortable, as they stroll about the area enjoying the different stalls. There will also be a bar with food and drinks and live music to conclude the event. Children will also enjoy bouncy castles, face paint, balloon sculptures and other activities especially designed for them.

The new treatment plant will be placed next to the recycling point (Punto Limpio) and rubble and waste will be classified depending on whether it can be recycled or not, Town Planning Councillor Sonia

Cerdan explained.

These measures, approved at the latest plenary session, aim to meet environmental

needs in the area and provide locals with a way to correctly dispose of all types of waste.

Summer pruning for better gardens JUST a couple of hours a week with secateurs will ensure a neat and enviable summer garden H. The preparation of cuttings and the propagation of young plants for planting out next year. Try summer cuttings of carnations, mock orange, geraniums/pelargoniums, mesums, leonotis, bignonias, hibiscus, lantanas, succulents, sages etc.

I. Safety. The lower branches of palms and spiky ends of yuccas, agaves, cacti and other spiky plants need cutting off during the summer especially if near paths or terraces.

J. To continue to be able to see the fish in the pond.

We regularly remove excess aerating weeds and excessive numbers of water lily leaves.

K. To train large shrubs and trees to cover up eyesores such as the garden shed and a new development down the road, or on the hillside above.

ALTHOUGH the weather is hot, indeed very hot at times, many plants will benefit from a summer pruning. But do this late evening as the sun sets or early morning before the sun is up.

The potential benefits are as follows.

A. A continuity of flowers.

This is particularly important with roses, all annuals, perennials such as geraniums and leonotis and shrubs such as plumbago and lantanas.

B. The removal of untidy dead flower heads. As for ‘a’ plus summer bulbs such as gladioli and lilies; aromatic herbs such rosemary, lavender and rue; perennials such as margaritas, gazanias and pelargoniums.

C. The collection of seed heads for seeds for next year.

Easy ones to grow are hollyhocks, marigolds, mirabilis, yellow lantanas and sweet peas.

D. A tidier garden. Just look around weekly and see what is starting to look out

E. Stopping the best external and internal views from being blocked out by exu-

F. Ensuring that the overhang of hedges and trees over outside pavements remains safe. Unfortunately

G. The stimulation of larger fruits. If fruit bushes or trees have a very heavy crop of small fruits remove some fruits on each branch.

PRUNING OF OLEANDERS A reader has emailed in to say that he had been unable to find information on Oleanders and having pruned his bushes heavily during last winter’s cutback he is now disappointed by this year’s display of flowers.

Our general recommendations re the pruning of oleanders are as follows.

If you have a large garden, grow them as specimen bushes or standard trees and merely prune to keep tidy.

Boundary hedges can become leggy unless pruned. We suggest you prune a third to half of the height every three years to stimulate thicker bushes and flowering shoots. However in the year of pruning the bushes will flower late and the best display will be during the following year.

If you have only a small or moderate garden with internal oleander hedges you may find it effective to cut two thirds of the branches back to 50 centimetres every three years leaving just a few flowering branches in the cutting year. The latter branches should be pruned in the second year.

There is a salmon pink variety ‘petite salmon’ that grows slowly and dwarf compared to other colours so is especially useful for smaller gardens or in mixed shrub beds.

Recognise that pruning will keep bushes down to a manageable size and stimulate an ever increasing network of flowering spurs, you will notice that those that flower most prolifically are those that are left a free rein to grow as large hedges around estates or on roadsides. Once established, oleanders are among the most drought resistant plants.

You may have noticed them growing in dry river beds. After long periods of drought they may start to wilt but with the first rains they soon leaf up and flower within a relatively short time. You therefore have a dilemma in the garden. How much to water? We only water oleanders if leaves start to yellow and fall in large numbers. © Dick Handscombe www.gardenspain.com August 2015

Traditional Spanish gardens

INCREASE WATERING: As well as feeding your plants with nutrients.

It’s not just humans and animals who are distressed by this continuing hot weather!

WHEN your garden is subjected to extreme heat for an ongoing period, many plants will suffer, often quite dramatically.

Naturally some plants, especially succulents are pretty much drought proof but if you enjoy a range of flowering plants and growing your own vegetables, then you will have to give them some help.

It can be extremely frustrating to have spent a great deal of time, effort and money on producing your oasis or market garden to then see all

that you have planted literally shrivel up and die.

The first signs of stress will be in the wilting of the foliage which indicates lack of water and excess of direct sunlight.

The obvious answer to this is to increase watering and for years many expert gardeners including the Royal Horticultural Society have advised against watering when the sun is at its strongest as they believed it caused leaf burn.

As with so many long standing theories, this has

now been tested and disproved by a team of physicists from a Hungarian University who could find no evidence that this was true.

So, apart from increasing watering, you should consider feeding with nutrients, spreading mulch around the base and for many vegetables in particular, a simple shade will help.

If you have a large garden then increasing watering is probably the most effective way of helping your plants, but you could also consider

planting taller bushy plants alongside those that need shade, these larger plants will cast shadows over those that are suffering.

SPAIN has a long history of taking the influences of various cultures and incorporating them into its traditional Spanish garden. The main inspirations have come from Moorish, Persian and Roman traditions and these gardens are havens of tranquility, beauty and coolness as they are based on the concept of long ponds set in a walled courtyard with paved areas and shady corners.

Naturally, to introduce such a garden into a private home requires a great deal of expense and patience, but elements, such as a fountain within a courtyard with a tiled seat would be relatively easy to construct.

For inspiration, there are so many traditional gardens open to the public and these can be found all over Spain, from Jerez to Sevilla and Granada.

Although far from traditional, the Gaudi designed Artigas Gardens in Catalonia are also an example of artistry and flair.

CATS do have a ‘righting reflex’ that operates when they fall.

The first thing that happens is the brain commands the head and neck muscles to put the head ‘square’ with the ground.

Puppy trafficking trade is putting lives at risk AN undercover investigation into the puppy smuggling trade has discovered that underage and unvaccinated puppies are being transported illegally from certain Eastern European countries.

Many of the puppies are sold online to customers in other European countries, including the UK. Some commercial dealers and breeders are selling the animals to members of the public, who often have no idea of their condition.

The charity Dogs Trust Today revealed this illegal trade back

in November 2014, not long after EU pet travel rules were relaxed. As a result, the EU regulation on pet travel came into force in December 2014 but the changes, as predicted by the charity, did not go far enough.

The risks of this smuggling operation, mean the puppies’ health is potentially in danger as well as that of humans. Cases of rabies have occurred in France, Spain and the Netherlands after dogs or cats were imported illegally.

By Carol Irving AS your pet cat gets older, there are certain symptoms you need to look out for in order to keep your kitty in top shape.

Cats are considered old or senior at 10 years of age and thought of as geriatric when

they reach 12-15 years.

If you notice weight loss in your cat, it could be down to a decreased sense of smell and taste. Digestion is also more difficult as they age and it may be better to feed them much smaller meals more frequently. However, weight loss can also signal disease so you

may want to consult a vet.

Just like humans, older cats tend to be less active but this can contribute to stiffening joints. In the cold weather they are more sensitive to cold and you may notice that their coats are not in a healthy condition.

Dehydration is another dan-

ger as they become less thirsty so be aware of their water intake as this could also signal kidney disease or diabetes. In order to combat diseases from old age, you need to make sure they have more regular health checks, including annual blood pressure tests and urine analysis.

Years of savings needed to buy home A STUDY by fotocasa and Infojobs online employment site has revealed that Spanish workers would need to use their entire income for an average of five and a half years to buy a new home. The results were obtained by taking average salaries in Spain (€1,969 per month gross) and the average price of property, which for June was reported to be €1,635 per square metre.

By region, the Basque Country is the area where workers would take longest to pay at 9.7 years, followed by the Balearic Islands at 7.2 years, Madrid at 7.1 years, Cataluña at 6.9 years, Cantabria at 6.4 years and Galicia at six years. At the other end of the scale, with the shortest time to save, were Castilla La Mancha (4.1 years), Extremadura (4.2 years) and Murcia (4.3 years).

By Carol Irving THE eighth Volkswagen Passat model sees a new gadget being introduced in the shape of an information display right in front of the driver’s field of vision, the first Volkswagen model to have this innovation.

The display, pops up above the dashboard on the windshield, enabling the driver to keep looking ahead without taking their eyes off the road. Information such as speed, traffic signs as well as data about the various assistance systems are shown on a 10 x 15cm transparent surface which has a resolution of 480 x 240 pixels.

Other information, such as alerts or navigation data, appear on the screen as though it is actually two metres in front of the vehicle, making it easier for the driver to continue focusing on the road ahead, rather than glancing at the dashboard and then having to refo-

cus, meaning there is less time to react at any potential traffic hazard.

To operate the display, drivers simply need to choose which types of information they want displayed via the infotainment system and activate it via a control next to the rotary light switch.

MEMBERS came from length and breadth of Spain NOT a cloud in the sky. Not a breath of wind. A blazing sun.

34 degrees. A typical Spanish July day was the backdrop for the recent lunch for the Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club, Costa del Sol. On this occasion it was held at Las Mayoralas with its fabulous views from the north shore over Lake Vinuela.

The journey to Las Mayoralas involved a beautiful run around southern Spain to find

the venue. Country lanes twisting through the mountains, olive and cork trees, passing barking scruffy dogs, goats and onwards to Lake Vinuela.

Members arrived from far afield, Leslie drove 400 kms from Toledo and Mike and Nick came from Ronda. Other members came from the length and breadth of the Costa del Sol. The next meeting will be on Saturday August 22 at Hotel

Cortijo La Reina on the edge of the Montes de Malaga. With a cava reception and four course gourmet menu for only 25 euros, it is not to be missed.

The Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club is the largest Jaguar club in the world and was formed in 1984.

HOT on the heels of technology that propels cars faster, comes a development which will take your motor up into the air.

The prototype of the flying car has recently been completed by two ex-students from the former Communist Czechoslovakia who dreamed of building such a machine as far back as the 1990s.

Inspired by the idea of freedom, Engineer Stefan Klein joined forces with fellow drama student Juraj Vaculik and came up with a design for a flying car which they hoped would become a reality.

In 2010, they formed the company Aeromobil, and hope to launch the vehicle in 2017.

Reaching speeds of up to 160kmph on land and 200 in the air, it can fly up to 3,000 metres with distances of up to 700 km.

Breaking all records, the Bloodhound car AFTER the latest development in motoring technology announced plans for a 300 mph car, it looks like it is already being overtaken. Scientists are working on developing a vehicle that can reach speeds of up to 1,000mph (1,610 kmph) and so break the world land speed record.

The car, which is being developed by a British team, will have an engine created from a rocket attached to a

Eurofighter-Typhoon jet engine. Named Bloodhound SSC, it will make its first appearance in 2016 at Hakskeen Pan in Northern Cape, South Africa.

The design has been created by World Land Speed Holder Wing Commander Andy Green, ably assisted by a team of RAF technicians from 71 Squadron.

Plans are to finish off the car with a Union Jack design on the tail fin, which will also

feature signatures of individuals or organisations who have supported the project.

Individuals who wish to do so, can donate as little as £15 (€21.37) and will receive a certificate and be listed on the fin, schools and other youth groups who donate £50 (€71.24) will receive a certificate and will be listed on a separate part of the fin, as will business and organisations who donate £500 (€712.42).

By Tony Myles THERE were two significant golf tournaments over the past weekend and they reminded me of those Spot the Difference newspaper competitions. Except that with these two events the differences were identified with ease.

Having watched the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Turnbury and the Tiger sponsored Quicken Loans, it is evident that there are very clear disparities between the male and female professional games.

New golf super power One of the first things you notice is the increasing dominance of Asian players in the ladies’ upper strata. Out of the top 20 finishers, 10 were Asian players. This is reflected in the world rankings

where again, nine of the top 20 are Asian players.

A few have relocated to other countries but the names at the top are a very strong indicator of the emergence of spectacular golfing talent from China, Japan and especially from Korea. The winner, who demonstrated the most resilient golf, was world number one, Inbee Park. A solid performer from Korea who already had a hoard of major golf titles to her name.

However - whilst the vast majority of golfers would have little difficulty in identifying Jordan Spieth I would bet that Inbee could turn up at your next Texas Scramble and nobody would recognise her. I would even go further by suggesting that if she was identified as the world number one very few would be able to name her.

This conjecture is supported by the size of the winner’s purse. In Gainesville, Virginia, The Quicken Loans winner, Troy Merrit, held off Ricky Fowler to top the leaderboard and collect

$1.2 million whilst in Turnbury - recently renamed Trump Turnbury - Inbee Park came from five shots back to overtake her own protégée Jin-Young Ko and collect a mere £298,000.

Of course it is a large sum and a good return on four days’ effort but it does bear comparison when the standard of golf was equally high in both events and it is merely the level of exposure that is determining the value.

So what is the point?

In summary, I spotted: 1. Strong challenge being mounted by Asian countries in the ladies’ game.

2. Limited coverage of the ladies’ events.

3. Much lower prize value for the ladies.

Girl power at Marina Phoenix July at MONDAY’S individual stableford at Marina Phoenix Golf Society on July 27, was a success for Margaret Budd, who with 41 points had the best score on the day to win the ladies’ division, beating all the men in the process.

Rosalie Fardon (35) was second, followed by Jean Wilkinson (30) in third.

In the men’s division, Les Armfield kept up his good run of form to win with 40 points. Steve Dimmock (39) secured second place, leaving José Urroz (37) to pick up third prize.

WITH the summer and the golf in full swing, some great stableford games have been enjoyed

by Aguillon Golf over the last few weeks.

On Wednesday July 15, the individual stableford saw Roy Stubbins win with 34 points, followed by David Lees on 32 (on a card play off), and Dave Wilson also scoring 32 points.

The individual stableford on Wednesday July 22 witnessed a good turnout for the time of year, with the winner posting a very creditable score under the conditions. First place was Gra-

Third place was taken by Dave Wilson with 33 points.

The game on Wednesday July 29, with the humidity rising, was aided by the buggies and plenty of water.
