Clampdown begins on illegal holiday lets TOURISM Department is checking apartment rentals By Gemma Quinn The clampdown on the unregulated rental of tourist apartments has begun. Valencia’s Tourism Agency has activated a new campaign against the illegal supply of tourist apartments and the unfair competition it poses to the sector. It is the first action against this irregular accommodation and is being carried out in conjunction with the tax office and agency for safety and emergency response. In the province of Alicante it is estimated that there are 20,107 unregulated apartments and the numbers continue to heighten the discomfort of tourism employers. Francesc Colomer from the tourism agency said the campaign will run until September 15 and aims to “verify that the holiday apartments that are rented seasonally in the Valencian Community comply with the rules to guarantee the quality of Turn to Page 6
