Only Malaga Province’s tourist occupancy will be higher than Almeria’s and the central government’s sub-del-

egate to Almeria recently detailed this year’s security plans.

They are focusing on public safety in tourist areas, shopping zones, leisure centres and the province’s principal transport connections, Andres Garcia Lorca (pictured centre) announced. Re-

inforcements have arrived from outside the province including officers from specialist units, said Garcia Lorca as he outlined the administration’s summer measures.

They include two subgroups belonging to the Police Intervention Unit (UIP) from Malaga and Granada

which specialise in immigration and border control.

These officers will be posted at Almeria’s port and airport where traffic inevitably increases in the summer.

ONE of the most famous Christian pilgrimages in the world is to Santiago de Compostela, and the Galician city is about to hold its biggest festival of the year.

Around 30,000 pilgrims a year are registered to visit, although the number is thought to be higher as many do the trip unofficially.

Also known as the St James Festival, it is held in the last two weeks of July. Many pilgrims aim to arrive by July 25, St James’s Day. The night before, the highlight of the fortnight for many is held when at midnight crowds

In total, 20,500 runners took part in the San Fermin running of the bulls this year. In 2014, two out of every three runners were taking part for the first time in their lives, and some 56 per cent of the participants each day were foreigners.

A swimmer had drowned that day on the same beach and another in Cala de los Toros but Alejandro, who has been a lifesaver, did not think twice. “I’ve been catching waves and surfing for 20 years and I know the

currents there,” he explained.

“When I reached him he was tired and nervous,” he said.

Another strong swimmer arrived with a surfboard and the three held on to it to return to the shore.

A change in the law allows courts to delay demolition of illegally built homes that were bought in good faith until the owners receive compensation.

The amendments apply to demolitions ordered by both criminal and contentious-administrative courts. These were initially proposed by the

PSOE socialist opposition party and subsequently agreed with the governing Partido Popular (PP).

These changes owe much to associations like Abusos Urbanisticos Almanzora No (AUAN) in Almeria and SOHA in Malaga.

Both represent homeowners whose houses are threatened with demolition through no fault of their own. “Now we are able to tell foreign investors that they can buy prop-

erty here,” said Gerardo Vazquez, who is spokesman and legal adviser to AUAN. He was speaking during a meeting between the collective and Jose Luis Sanchez Teruel, the PSOE’s secretary general for Almeria. AUAN expressed public thanks to the party for guiding the legislation through the Senate and Parliament.

“The British like this part of Spain and want to invest here, but under a system that protects them,” AUAN said.

Possibly the last word rests with senior judge Tomas Cobo.

Speaking during a joint conference of the General Judiciary Council and Spain’s Colleges of Architects in Almeria last June, he claimed that town halls have little appetite for demolitions.

Few will be carried out, he predicted: “If homes are torn down, a mayor not only has to face protests from residents but the town hall must now pay compensation,” he said.

He explained that the day and night-time patrols are also there to remind the public that pets are barred from the beaches, together with barbecues, fixed structures that are a nuisance to others and fishing while people are swimming.

The outdoor drinking sessions by large groups of teenagers and young adults, which are a principal cause of complaints to the police, are also vetoed. “The aim is to balance entertainment with relaxation so the young are reminded that the ‘botellon’ is banned,” Muñoz said.

The patrols are also clamping down on unauthorised street vending, which has a negative impact on local shops, and ensuring that cars do not park on the promenades or beaches.

No further action in yellow helicopter probe INVESTIGATIONS into an abandoned and damaged helicopter discovered near Nijar will not go any further.

As no drugs were found, the judge in charge of the enquiry has shelved the case.

Discovering the large yellow helicopter in Fernan Perez should have been the starting point for an investigation that revealed who was involved, said Alejandra Dodero.

Instead there were no leads apart from the reaction of sniffer dogs which indicated that cannabis had at some stage been present.

Although damaged while landing in the Fernan Perez field, the helicopter was not involved in an accident and had issued no request for help. Neither were there visible signs that the pilot or the aircraft’s occupants were injured.

Where the helicopter had come from, where it was bound and whether it was dropping off or picking up a cargo of drugs remains a mystery.

Although generally emptier than dual carriageway main

roads or motorways, they have a higher accident rate nationwide and also in Almeria Province. Of the 490 accidents registered in the province between January and December last year, 385 occurred on a secondary road.

With this in mind, the General Traffic Directorate (DGT) is stepping up vigilance at 30 Almeria black spots. “These locations were chosen after analysing serious accidents involving loss of

CALAR ALTO: Is there anyone out there?

A non-hitchhiking guide to the galaxy INSTRUMENT will be looking for Earth-like planets

By Linda Hall THE Carmenes project at Calar Alto will be putting Almeria at the head of the astronomy world.

The observatory at Sierra de Los Filabres, which recently celebrated its 42nd anniversary, will boast a unique instrument - Carmenes - that does not exist anywhere else in the world.

Carmenes is the acronym for “Calar Alto highResolution search for M dwarfs with Exo-earths

with Near-infrared and optical Echelle Spectographs). In other words, it is a next-generation instrument that will be used by Spanish and German scientists looking for Earth-like planets.

It is now being assembled and should be ready for use by this October.

The project will be carried out over 600 nights and is due to finish in 2018 although depending on circumstances and the progress made, this could be extended until 2020 or even longer.

Chance to forget about violence in Almeria THIRTY-EIGHT victims of gender violence will holiday in Almeria this summer. The women will in some cases be accompanied by their children, who psychologists recognise are as af-

fected by domestic abuse as the mothers.

As well as respite from the abuse they have suffered, the holidays provided by the Andalucia Institute for Women (IAM) are

designed to help them integrate into normal society. This is particularly important for the children, as many have been in foster care to remove them from lifethreatening gender violence.

Increased sales to best customer TURNOVER from Almeria’s 10 principal clients for fruit and vegetables increased by 8 per cent between January and April.

Germany remains at the top of the province’s client list as regards volume, and exports increased by 2 per cent compared with 2014’s first quarter. Sales to France showed the greatest increase and grew by 18 per cent, revealed Extenda, Andalucia’s export agency.

Exports to the UK, another of Almeria’s most important markets, increased by 24 per cent and to the Netherlands and Italy by around 18 per cent.

However, the biggest leap of all was not in Almeria’s trading relations with Europe but America.

Exports of olive oil increased by 48.2 per cent and the US has now overtaken Italy as the province’s principal client for oil.

Almeria’s agrifood sector earned €1.112 billion in the first quarter of this year, 49.3 per cent of the regional total. Huelva accounted for €496.3 million - a 17 per cent increase followed by Sevilla whose exports totalled €274.7 million.

When the Euro Weekly News (EWN) asked her about her greatest achievement, she said: “Being a single mum, bringing up two boys by myself.” And this is what motivated this remarkable lady to set up the organisation Guardian Angels, which supports lone parents.

Tricia knows all about being a single parent; when her marriage broke up her two boys were very small, aged just four and one.

“Being a single parent changes you,” said Tricia: “It is hard work, relentless and sometimes isolating. When I came to Spain seven years ago I began meeting single parents here and recognised in them all the difficulties I had faced as a single mum all those years ago. Within two years I set up Guardian Angels.”

In Spain, lone parents have to work hard to survive and for their children to thrive. Some work two or even three jobs to earn enough to keep their families together and in Spain there are hurdles to overcome that are not present elsewhere; the cost of school books, for example, which is a financial nightmare for cashstrapped singles.

“The price of school textbooks is astronomical,” said Tricia, “and parents don’t even know which books they have to buy until September so they have little time to try to buy them secondhand or even organise a book share. So Guardian Angels helps out with a

The electrical system has been upgraded, the pumping station’s valve chamber renewed and anti-blockage pumps installed in procedures similar to those in

Calle Picasso that are now nearing completion and which cost more than €12,700.

“Doing something about the smell in some parts of town was one of the first decisions taken by the new council,” Cortes said. “This was a priority in improving the quality of life for residents.”

Small towns, big debts but others are in the black SHOCKING statistics reveal most indebted towns in Almeria

By Linda Hall ALHABIA (population 681) is ranked 21st amongst the most indebted municipalities in Spain.

The list was compiled by the Institute of National Statistics (INE) using figures from the municipal registers and information supplied by Spain’s Finance Ministry, Hacienda.

Alhabia’s town hall debt of €2,948,000 works out at €4,330 for every man, woman and child registered as an inhabitant on the padron.

Fiery words over ejected firewatcher CSIF Almeria, which represents sector workers, complained that an official firewatcher was ousted unfairly from his Bayarcal post.

He had held the El Picacho post for 20 years but was replaced by someone who was irregularly appointed, the union claimed.

Instead of going through the normal channels his replacement was a direct selection made by the regional government’s Environment department, CSIF said.

The firewatcher must now travel to Laujar which is 35 kilometres away.

The union criticised the substitution as “inexplicable” as it entailed more expense both for the employee and the Andalucia Enviroment and Water Agency (AMAYA).

It was a false alarm as lifeguards and Red Cross volun-

teers practised a beach rescue.

It took the volunteers 60 seconds to reach a swimmer who had suffered a fictional heart attack and was spotted by a lifeguard. It required another 60 seconds to remove him from the water, begin CPR

and apply oxygen and a defibrillator.

An ambulance arrived 60 seconds later and, timed with a stopwatch, the entire exercise had lasted a total of four minutes and 20 seconds, the organisers revealed afterwards.

Argentinian judge helps stolen babies MARIA ASCENSION LOPEZ, who lives in Almeria, was a baby stolen during the Franco era.

She does not know the identity of her biological mother but Maria Ascension, now 51, learnt from her adoptive mother that she was bought for 250,000 pesetas (approximately €1,502).

She recently gave evidence to an Almeria judge, but the questions she answered were sent to the Almeria court by Maria Servini, an Argentinian judge.

Servini is currently investigating crimes committed during the Franco era which includes the stolen babies scandal. Practically all were born to single mothers told after giving birth that their

child had died during, or soon after, birth.

Many never believed this and although in some cases their suspicions turned out to be unfounded, a handful have finally been able to meet their children, now adults. In some cases, like Maria Ascension’s, the adopted children have attempted to track down their biological mother.

Maria’s evidence will be remitted to Argentina, but she said it was a bittersweet day for her. “I hope that justice will be done one day, but I feel frustrated that it won’t be done by my own country,” she lamented.

“Many mothers have bequeathed uncertainty to their children. I don’t want to leave that legacy to mine,” she said.

Warning about dog poisoning SEVERAL residents of El Ejido and Almerimar have warned of possible cases of dog poisoning in the area.

“My dog Malu was the first one affected,” said Ruben Campoy, speaking to Spanish daily IDEAL. The resident of Almerimar and owner of the dead 16month-old Jack Russell, Malu, said: “I was playing with her near the Plaza Batel when I noticed she looked dizzy. She then vomited and later on had other symptoms like diarrhoea. I took her to the vet but she died within 40 minutes.”

At least three other dogs have already died after eating sausages and meat laced with poison.

“My dad went for a walk with our 18-month-old Teckel, near the Plaza Batel,” said another resident, adding: “He noticed she was acting weird and we took her to the vet where they pumped her stomach, but she did not last more than half an hour.”

Similar cases have also been reported in the area of Ejido Norte, specifically on a plot of land near Calle Manolo Escobar.

Lives are being saved SEVENTY-FOUR per cent of Almeria Province’s 280,564 drivers still have all their driving licence points.

Instead of adding points to a licence for an offence as in the UK, Spanish drivers lose them.

“Drivers not only face stiff fines but also know they can lose their licences once their points are used up,” said Jose Maria Mendez Olivares, head of the Provincial Traffic Authority.

head of the association, Vicente Parra, and its board of directors to determine which steps were needed to achieve their aim.

Work will include the creation of an independent area for psychology and physiotherapy services, and updating the facilities.

World events could boost Spain tourism AS Greece goes through financial turmoil and British citizens have been advised not to go to Tunisia, it would appear Spain could get an unexpected tourism windfall.

Figures suggest that up to 300,000 Britons were planning on visiting Tunisia, many of whom are now looking for late deals to other destinations, according to the UK’s Daily Mail newspaper.

In Europe it is largely Spain which has the hotels and tourist infrastructure to cope with a

large rise in demand.

Factor in Greece as well, where advance bookings are down over fears there may be food shortages and a lack of cash from hole-in-thewall machines, and the thought is there may be an influx to Spain.

The country has already reported good bookings with more than 90 per cent occupancy rates in August expected at coastal tourism hotspots.

Last year around 15 million Britons visited Spain, up from 11 million in 2010.

Looters target cemeteries A GROUP of residents in Almeria are outraged after vandals caused havoc at several cemeteries in the city.

More than 30 niches at the San Jose and Santa Adela cemeteries have been looted. According to victims who spoke to Spanish daily IDEAL, the thieves had opened up the glass windows which protect the gravestones. They took all objects which seemed to have any value, including commemorative plaques and glass bouquets.

“In my case, replacing all stolen items will cost at least €400,” said Jose Gaspar, head of the residents’ association in Los Almendros. He added:: “They even stole vases and marble jardinières.”

Since last Wednesday, Mr Gaspar has not ceased to receive complaints from victims all across Almeria.

People from as far afield as Torrecardenas and Piedras Redondas, who visited the cemetery only to find their deceased relatives’ niches had been completely plundered, have contacted him.

“We are not sure what the thieves intend to do with the stolen objects,” said another victim: “But we are aware they knew which objects were valuable and which weren’t.”

Residents are concerned that more robberies could take place and have asked the cemetery’s management as well as Almeria Council to set up surveillance cameras to resolve the problem.

The Blue Flags quality certificate obtained by the town’s beaches Venta del Bancal-Las Ventanicas, Piedra Villazar and Marina de la Torre were hoisted last week by major of Mojacar, Rosa Maria Cano, together with

other Council representatives and local hotel owners.

A comprehensive cleaning campaign together with works to improve beach accessibility has contributed to obtaining these quality flags. All beaches now have lifeguards, toilets, showers, and services which allow people with disabilities to access the water with amphibious wheelchairs.

The Blue Flags Certificate is bestowed by an international jury and has several requisites to be satisfied by candidates: the quality of water, environment information available at beach facilities, good safety and environment policies as well as counting on certain services and structures (toilets, showers and those services for the disabled).

Spain’s Tweeters busting drugs gangs THE news that more than 800 arrests linked to drug trafficking have been made through information gleaned on Twitter shows that the use of social media is now an effective police tool.

In just two-and-a-half years a campaign asking for information has had 35,000 tip-

offs from its 1.66 million Twitter followers.

Using the hashtag #tweetredada, the Spanish National Police urges people to report any suspected drugs transactions, large or small, anywhere in Spain. There is also a dedicated email account, antidro-

ga@police.es for the same purpose.

Police say the information sent to both Twitter and by email is kept strictly confidential and no user has to identify themselves. Once received, the tip-offs are assessed by a team from Central Narcotics to decide whether to investigate further.

Seaplanes are called in to help extinguish forest fire PINES destroyed in the forest of La Marina

By Gemma Quinn TWO seaplanes and a helicopter were needed to extinguish a fire in the pine forest of La Marina.

The blaze was just 300m from the Rebollo beach, close to the campsite and destroyed around 3,000 square metres of pine forest.

Three fire trucks were also in attendance as crews and emergency service workers spent two hours on Sunday July 12, bringing the blaze under control.

Despite its close proximity to a busy beach and campsite, the quick action of the forest fire brigades meant that the area did not have to be evacuated.

Police are now investigating the cause of the fire and the first hypothesis suggests it could have been the result of possible fire recklessness with dirt and rubbish being left in the area that ignited.

Relief as bailout agreed EUROZONE ministers give Greece another chance to get back on track

By Dilip Kuner A GREEK exit from the Euro has been averted after a bailout deal was struck between Greece and Eurozone leaders.

At least that is according to European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.

Speaking after a marathon 17hour bargaining session on Sunday, July 12, that went

through the night, he said: “Grexit has gone.”

This news will come as a relief to Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy; with elections coming up the last thing he needed was the uncertainty over the Euro affecting Spain’s economic recovery.

The bailout comes at the price of tough new austerity

measures imposed by the EU which were due to be approved by the Greek Parliament on Wednesday, July 15, before any funds were released.

The EU and International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimate Greece needs between €82 and €86 billion over the next three years; that is on top

of the €240 billion it has already received. Greece has been in turmoil as its banks have been shut for two weeks with a €60 a day limit on cashpoint withdrawals.

The crisis came to a head with a €3 billion loan repayment to the IMF due with no money in the Greek treasury coffers to pay it.

THE International Monetary Fund (IMF) has placed Spain at the head of growth amongst advanced economies in the Eurozone, with a growth forecast of 3.1 per cent for 2015 and 2.5 per cent for 2016.

In its revised Global Economy Outlook, the IMF has maintained its previsions for growth of 1.7 per cent up until the end of this year and 1.5 per cent for next year in the Eurozone, where in general it believes recovery to be under way.

Spain’s growth appears clear to the IMF, which has placed it amongst the countries in the world with the highest growth margin. In fact, it even beats the US (expected to grow 2.5 per cent in 2015) and the UK (2.4 per cent).

On a global level, the IMF has reduced its growth forecast to 3.3 per cent for 2015, two points less than the predictions from April, while those for 2016 remain at 3.8 per cent.

Hotel boom THE resurgence of Spain’s economy is having a dramatic effect on the hotel and tourism sector.

Investment from Britain, the US, Asia, Russia and the Middle East is driving a surge in hotel and tourism. CBRE, the financial advisors, have predicted that 2015 will be a boom year, outstripping the €1.6 billion invested in the sector in 2006.

The rising trend can be attributed to many factors. The strong sterling exchange rate is one reason for investment from Britain. Russian investors who want to move their assets abroad are finding the Spanish climate attractive. Middle Eastern speculators who are looking for new markets within Europe are finding the glut of Spanish property and tourist businesses available suits their needs, and Asia is flexing its new-found financial muscle. Regardless of where the funds come from it is a well-needed boost to the Spanish economy.

OTHERS THINK IT WHAT a wonderful budget result for decent hard-working citizens and what a glorious comeuppance for the layabouts, who wheedle, sponge, and indeed consider it their right to exist on taxpayers’ money!

After all the propaganda and bribes the leftwing politicians have been using to buy these idlers votes for years, the benefit wastes of space have at last received the truth, namely that they are deluded, despised and downright hated by the majority of British citizens.

Ironically, it was probably the left-leaning Channel 4 who, by somehow trying to glamorise these people in the Benefit Street documentaries, attracted a whole deluge of Cameron votes from Labour and Liberal supporters appalled that the likes of ‘White Dee’ and her bunch of apparent wasters could possibly be able to continue their worthless existence.

The sheer arrogance and blatant work-shy attitude of these social misfits, was enough to

change anyone’s political loyalties. I would actually like to go even further. Amongst other measures, I would bring in compulsory sterilisation for the single mothers churning out children by unknown fathers purely to receive child benefits.

Pictures of these self-righteous women, surrounded by Lord knows how many kids, is an affront to responsible parents who often restrict their families, purely because they know their income cannot support more offspring, even if they would perhaps enjoy a larger family. Don’t misunderstand me, I am not against a fair benefit system for those genuinely in need. What I am opposed to are those who adopt Giros and handouts as a lifestyle. Like those who think it clever to fall out of bed in the early afternoon, and consider signing on a chore. I’d like to be one of the undoubtedly many flies on their wall, when they wake up one morning and realise that in order to feed themselves and their families they will actually need to get a job.

Ain’t life suddenly grand? Let’s hope we don’t have to wait too long.

Beware of Greeks bearing nothing. Practically a whole nation looking for even more handouts. Also the beginning of the end of yet another German dream of a United Europe - with them at the helm. Great.

THE recent ceremonies marking the 10th anniversary of the July 7 London bomb attacks brought back both good and bad memories of the atrocity that destroyed lives and families.

Stories about acts of selfless heroism performed by emergency workers and members of the public alike.

My cousin was in London that day for an interview, staying at a Russell Square hotel, and I knew she’d be on a train or at the station or catching a bus at nearby Tavistock Square.

It was a frantic few hours waiting for news, but once that relief was there, my mind turned to sheer, bloody-minded anger which, frankly, hasn’t really stopped. Fortunately for us, the outcome was good. But I’ll always feel for those for whom it wasn’t.

I’d been in the vicinity of quite a few IRA London bombings in the 90s myself, so reading

Other stories not infrequently linked to times

of turmoil involve those who, for whatever reason (financial/family/personal) disappear and resurface with a new identity.

My psychological suspense thriller, Soul Stealer, tells the story of one such identity change during 7/7. And the chilling, life-changing consequences for those left behind searching

for the truth behind subterfuge and murder.

Based on my own journalistic experiences, Soul Stealer not only delves into the secretive, shadowy world of identity theft, betrayal and revenge but also mirrors real-life events. Years ago, I worked for David Elias, an internationally successful businessman, and attended lavish parties on his private yacht (papped and ending up in Tatler!). I later learned he’d died in the Far East. I felt sad but, that was that - or, so I thought.

Next I read the Serious Fraud Office was investigating after reports of his Reggie-Perrinstyle ‘death’ might be ‘premature’ following ‘inconsistencies’ in the death certificate. It’s also claimed by creditors (he allegedly owes £100m) he’s undergone cosmetic surgery to re-invent himself: a new identity in a new life wherever that may be. (And no, CrimeStoppers, I’ve no idea where he is either!)

Who took the love out of tennis?

IT’S all about winning the trophies, but I reckon the cash might be a slight consideration too Colin Bird A weekly look Each week, Colin brings his slightly off-the-wall view of the world to the pages of EWN in his own irreverent style.

ONCE again Wimbledon has come and gone, and by now we will have seen the latest champions parading around Centre Court, displaying their silverware.

It’s all about the prestige of winning these trophies the players assure us, but with £1.88 million going to both the men’s and ladies’ winning finalists, I reckon the cash just might be a slight consideration too.

I have always been a Wimbledon fan. Taking time off work in my teens to watch the games on TV, I simply could not get enough of watching the giants of the game on our less than giant 14 inch screen telly.

I remember with fondness the golden days of Australian tennis with players such as Rod Laver, Roy Emmerson, Ken Rosewall, Margar e t C o u r t a n d E v o n n e Goolagong.

My own favourite was John

Personally, I think the Spanish would be far more justified in campaigning against Britain’s cruel sports. It appears the Act against fox hunting is to be repealed. Badger baiting and culling is commonplace, as is hare coursing.

Game shooting is a moneyearner; birds are raised to be peppered with shot by toffs.

The Aintree Grand National Steeplechase is notorious for the appalling deaths of beautiful horses. Add to this the scores of other horse racing ‘sports.’ Vivisection is still legal. Few Britons have the

It sounds like common sense, but setting out on a journey without making sure our vehicle is in good condition, is risky and foolish.

Over-heating engines are a serious danger, so water needs to be checked, and it’s also wise to check your tyres.

Keeping ourselves, our children and pets rehydrated is essential, drinking water especially on long journeys, with young children and the elderly particularly vulnerable.

Leaving pets locked up in cars in this weather could also be fatal, and we have to be fully aware of the harmful effects of the sun, whether we are in a car, at home or on the beach. Small animals and children absorb the heat more and need to be protected from harmful rays which cannot only burn but can cause heatstroke.

Some of the signs of heatstroke include high body temperature, altered mental state, flushed skin, rapid breathing, racing heart rate, headache, vomiting or exhaustion. Be on the lookout for the signs of heat-stroke in your loved ones, keep them cool with a wet sponge on the skin or ice packs, keep them in shade, and if any doubt, seek urgent medical advice.

So, when out and about this week, don’t get caught out, in different circumstances, sunshine can be heaven… or hell.

His party attracted disillusioned voters who felt that politicians “are all the same.” Now power-hungry Iglesias is confirming it.

Magnanimous gesture FORMER president Jose Maria Aznar complained that Madrid’s new and extremely left wing mayor Manuela Carmena said better things about her Partido Popular predecessor Ana Botella in three days than the party itself in three years.

Aznar is being disingenuous: Botella is the increasingly querulous expremier’s wife which explains why she is not universally loved inside the party. On the other hand, she was an inept mayor who can only make Carmena look good. No wonder the former judge can afford to be magnanimous.

The party retained control of Madrid’s autonomous government in this way as well as Almeria City Hall, for instance.

Ciudadanos might be more presentable in PP eyes, but does that make its support any more legitimate than Podemos’s?

How many times are the people of the EU going to have to bail out a nation that is obviously laughing all the way to the bank, literally!

Greece is a never ending hole that the European government has just committed itself to throwing money into indefinitely, instead of cutting their losses and running when they had the chance.

They were loaned money when they joined, failed to pay it back, bailed out with more, and failed to honour that agreement as well. Now the EU has fallen for their promises a third time.

Honestly… how stupid do you have to be?

Let’s put this into perspective… If a single parent without a job or prospects managed by some miracle to get a 100€ bank loan because she needed food, and then couldn’t pay it back, then went back to the bank and said “I’ll pay it back over six months if you give me another 100€ today,” then failed to pay that back. But then refused to speak about it until the bank gave them another 100€, what do you think the bank would say… if they would say yes, I want to know the name of that bank, I’ll open an account tomorrow. And no! I wouldn’t pay it back either.

barbaric? I’ve never been to a bullfight and I don’t like them, but it’s a Spanish tradition. We’ve heard from a reliable source, that from when the bull enters the ring to its demise, it’s no longer than 15 minutes.

At least the bull has a chance against one man. What chance does the fox have against a pack of dogs tearing it to pieces, when it is exhausted?

Hopefully the fox hunting MPs won’t win, although I can’t imagine that happening. Come on you protestors, get your own house in order!

Barking dogs I WAS HORRIFIED to read David the Dog Man’s article about the noise from barking dogs and concluding that people can drug their dogs to stop it.

Most of the readers of your paper will be native English or British and presumably like me will never have come across this problem before coming to Spain, so why is Spain different?

The article focuses on the terrible noise we all have to put up with, mostly at night for some reason and not the

suffering of the dogs, and they are suffering because dogs as we all know do not normally bark incessantly for no reason. Is it simply separation anxiety or is it lack of consideration, or even abuse? Why is it mostly at night?

How terrible for ‘David the Dogman’ who cares for animals to suggest people drug their animals. Would you suggest drugging a child that cries all night?? No of course you wouldn’t you would find out the reason and stop it!

Clomicalm are used as part of a comprehensive behavioural management programme to treat separation anxiety in dogs and other animals. Inappropriate barking or destructive behaviour, as well as inappropriate elimi-

nation (urination or defecation) may be alleviated by the use of Clomicalm in conjunction with behaviour modification. Separation anxiety is a complex behaviour disorder displayed when the owner leaves the dog.

Beverley with respect I suggest you re-read my article which clearly states pet owners with problems regarding continual barking, destruction or separation anxiety should refer to a vet who ‘might’ consider Clomicalm further stating that this drug should be used in conjunction with behavioural therapy.

I reiterate one must take advice from a vet since this drug is only on prescription.

Your comment regarding comparing dogs with children does not come into the equation.

LEAPY, I cannot agree with your assertion that Cliff should be shouting his innocence, everybody handles such things differently. You may well do that, but Cliff has to a great extent withdrawn from society for a good many years and I don’t believe it is in his nature to do as you suggest.

I don’t believe for one minute all these allegations against him, they are just made by people who are maybe seeking compensation, or want to make a name for themselves. One has already been told by the police to forget it.

It has all come to light since the allegations against Jimmy Savile so why not jump on the bandwagon?

If these people are so incensed about ‘what happened to them’ why have they waited 40 years to come forward?

The trouble is, these days many people are looking at any way to make a few bucks and they don’t care what damage they do to a person’s reputation. It is shameful, and a good indication of the type of society we are living in these days!

ITV and Netflix are thought to be leading the race to sign Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May for a new project. Hulu is also apparently in the running to hire the former Top Gear trio to front a new unscripted motoring series, according to Variety.

Clarkson, Hammond and May are believed to have been negotiating deals with various networks since departing the BBC series, which is to be relaunched with Chris Evans as lead host. Their long-time producer Andy Wilman is also expected to reunite with the team for the new series. Netflix has reportedly made a ‘sizeable’ offer for the trio for multi-

been commissioned by the BBC for a new Brittas Empire. So there’s a chance that I may well be back.”

According to The Mirror, a BBC spokeswoman has confirmed that a project - possibly a Christmas special - is being developed.

The Brittas Empire ran for 53 episodes between 1991 and 1997.

THE church had declared the route “compulsory” during the Middle Ages, especially if you had lots of baggage and needed to repent. The divine destinations were Jerusalem, Rome or Santiago de Compostela.

Yet, some 900 years later, the latter route is still exceedingly popular amongst the religious of all sects.

Over the years the journey has evolved into a well-orchestrated event. Travellers continue to pour in from France and Spain to follow well-trodden routes. Some are on bikes or even horses or donkeys but by far the majority arrive on foot, check in and obtain their passport and head out. There are famous starting points and you must begin at least 100 kilometres away from Santiago.

I tried to get in much better shape to avoid shin splints. I logged officially 775 kilometres but naturally you walk much more off route to investigate points of scenic interest or castles. The route is well marked with plenty of signs and as the day wears on you are pretty much following the crowd.”

Santiago de Compostela is a must place to visit, even if you nip in by car. Writer James Michner dedicates an entire chapter to it in his book Iberia. And the internet is full of groups that leave periodically to make their journey.

WHO wants higher taxes on tobacco THE World Health Organisation (WHO) has called for countries to impose higher taxes on tobacco and its derivatives, to reduce the number of deaths caused by their addiction and generate funds for public health systems.

According to a report by the WHO on the global epidemic, only 33 countries have set taxes that account for 75 per cent of the price of a pack of cigarettes. This is the amount of tax recommended by the organisation, who said it was one of the

most cost-effective ways to reduce the consumption of harmful products, while public revenues are generated.

The presentation of the 2015 report was held in recognition of the efforts and progress of the country in the fight against cannabis abuse, which in recent years has increased taxes by more than 300 per cent.

It is estimated globally, one person dies of an illness related to snuff every six seconds, equivalent to about six million people a year.

Steak for stamina

THERE are some natural options to protect you from being eaten alive by that annoying little insect, the mosquito.

Although there are different species, most are attracted to bacteria and sweat and some are also in search of carbon dioxide and certain odours.

One remedy that has been used since the 1940s is lemon eucalyptus oil and you can create your own easily. Mosquitoes seem to steer clear of citrus based products, and if you mix one part lemon eucalyptus oil with 10 parts sunflower oil or witch hazel it can work well as a repellent.

Thyme oil is another deterrent and it is one of the most effective oils for providing protection. You can mix the thyme oil with water to create a spray.

If you put five drops of the oil to every teaspoon of water it is noted by previous studies to give over 90 per cent protection.

Cinnamon is not only a repellent but it will also kill off mosquito eggs, according to a study conducted in Taiwan. You can mix a quarter of a teaspoon of cinnamon oil to 120ml of water which you can spray onto your clothing or skin. Some skins can be irritated by the oil so it is best to test first.

Lavender is another favourite which smells good and mosquitoes are repelled by the fragrance.

New nose ring device could prevent snoring A SMALL nose ring type device has been created to help suffers of sleep apnoea.

The matchbox-sized device pumps air into the nose continuously throughout the night to keep the airways open and prevent snoring.

Sleep apnoea is a disorder where the tissues in the throat collapse repeatedly during the night, blocking airways for up to 10 seconds at a time, causing loud snoring. But it can also affect breath-

ing, causing the sufferer to temporarily stop breathing, depriving the body of oxygen which can lead to other problems such as high blood pressure. It can affect thousands of people.

The standard treatment is a face mask that keeps the airways open during sleep and whilst proved to be effective, many people find it uncomfortable to wear. It is hoped the new device, called Airling, will become more popular.

During mass at the Santa Maria Church, the Bishop announced that for the third centenary of the Saliente Sanctuary in Albox, the ecclesiastic authorities have authorised the universal jubilee ordered by Pope Francis.

This means that the Saliente Sanctuary will be one of the sacred sites where activities will take place in 2016.

Pope Francis announced in March 2013 at the Papal Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican that 2016 would celebrate an extraordinary holy year.

As usual we had the house salad to share at the start which was a good sized fresh salad, with our starters following shortly. My colleague had the Spaghetti Bolognese while I tried the delicious lentils. We were both impressed from the start that all the

Having finished the meal with a tea and coffee afterwards we concluded it was by far the best menu del día we had tried for a long time and we would be returning shortly.

Car drives over cliff A BRITISH woman was hurt after the car she was driving went over a cliff in Arboleas.

On July 13, at around 9am and for reasons still unknown, the woman lost control of her car and swerved off the Arroyo Aceituno road in Arboleas, between the Los Carrascos and Los Garcias cottages.

Several witnesses reported that the car fell from a height of four metres. Shortly after, Local Police and the fire brigade attended and had to release the victim.

The 71-year-old woman did not lose consciousness and was taken to La Inmaculada Hospital in Huercal Overa.

Will the real Banksy please stand up?

EWN speaks to a man who claims to bust some of the myths that lie behind the street-art phenomenon

By Steve Walsh AFTER more than 10 years, the real Banksy, or at least the man claiming to be the real Banksy, has finally come out of the shadows to speak to the Euro Weekly News about the phenomenon, the myth and the lies that are ‘Banksy’, and how he intends to “bust open the whole scam.”

In a moment that was as surreal as the portraits of Picasso and Dali I was looking at, Michael Shurman eased back into the terrace chair of his Spanish woodland hideaway cottage and drew a deep breath. I waited pen in hand as the anxious frustration that was apparent on his face broke and he said: “I am the real Banksy.”

The thought that I could actually be sitting in front of arguably the most controversial and elusive street artist in the world flashed through my brain as he continued: “Or should I say, if Banksy really existed, it’s me.”

My mood of pending epiphany was

replaced by one of bewilderment as Michael began his story. “Banksy doesn’t exist, you see, not as a person. Banksy is a group of people controlled by one man, a man that stole my ideas back in Bristol in 2004,” he said.

Artist and illustrator Shurman, claims that after studying at Goldsmiths College of Art, he moved back and forth between Bristol and Glastonbury, where he started displaying his Alien Head graffiti that became synonymous with the times in strategic locations.

“When I went back to Bristol in 2006 and got back into the street art scene, I discovered my work had been covered over with new works,

but in the style I created while at Goldsmiths. These works soon became known as Banksy. Since then I have been frozen out of any art gallery, exhibition or art establishment I’ve tried to get into. I’ve been shunned by the press and blocked by the art world at every turn.

“I know who’s responsible,” he said, “he went to Goldsmiths after me. He stole my ideas and gets his team to stencil graffiti for him. He is very shrewd, and very clever. I was pushed out of the scene because I didn’t agree with the money-making side of it. That’s what Banksy means, it’s their slang name for making money.

“I’ve bitten my tongue for too long. So I am going to get a lawyer and start proceedings against them.

Enough is enough,” he said, adding: “People have to know the truth about the big lie and how they have been tricked all these years. I’m going to bust open the whole scam. If anyone’s Banksy, it’s me!” he declared.

Charitable volunteering to help Spaniards speak English

By Dick Handscombe PROBABLY more than a million Spaniards are attempting to achieve a good level of English in order to obtain employment.

Many are graduates and the main barrier to obtaining a good job is the ability to use the language conversationally face to face and on the telephone.

Unfortunately, most traditional programmes of language training include insufficient in depth practice in listening and speaking, but there is an effective alternative. It is called Vaughan Town and the organisers are always looking for volunteer English-speakers to join in.

By chance I came across the programme a couple of years ago and have now volunteered three times and will do so again. It has been a great way to give something practical back to Spain, which has given me a great place to retire to.

In the ones I attended from Sunday to Friday, 15 to 25 Spaniards aged from mid-20s to mid-50s were

ANGLO VOLUNTEERS: Accents included British, American, Australian and South African.

If you wish to give something back to Spain, a Vaughan Town week is very worthwhile

joined by the same number of Anglo volunteers with a wide range of accents from the UK, USA, Canada, the Caribbean, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, etc, as well as expats living in Spain.

The Spaniards already had an in-

termediate level of understanding of English but lacked the confidence and sufficient practice to speak it spontaneously and well. However, during the week they made tremendous progress for they had to practise speaking for some 75 to 80 hours

with the Anglo volunteers from breakfast to getting on for midnight.

The discussions were on a one to one basis. Mixed groups of Anglos and Spaniards also rehearsed entertainment sessions that were presented each evening.

The Spaniards were coached by the English-speaking volunteers including myself. To achieve a total immersion experience neither Spaniards nor Anglos were allowed to speak a word of Spanish during the week including on the bus to and from the hotel venue and Madrid.

The Spanish learned fast and achieved a good return for their financial investment. All the Anglo volunteers enjoyed giving something to Spain and making new friends.

The Anglo volunteers weren’t paid but transport from Madrid and full board for the week was free.

If you wish to give something back to Spain, especially something that will have an impact on the ability of Spaniards to gain employment, a Vaughan Town week can be a great experience.

Growing vegetables in builders’ buckets THERE are many benefits to growing vegetables in large tubs in the garden Dick Handscombe

IN theory a few vegetables as well as herbs can be grown in pots, but what we normally regard as pots are not very successful in the summer in Spanish gardens once temper-

atures rise above 20 degrees.

Today and for the past few days our temperature in the shade hovers around 37 degrees but vegetables, if watered every other day, are

growing well in black builders’ buckets of 55 centimetre diameter and of 65 centimetres elsewhere in semi-shaded corners of the garden.

They include red and crinkly green lettuces, rocket, Swiss chard, purslane, carrots, cabbages, cauliflowers, stevia, cumin, horseradish, climbing yardlong and butter beans, dwarf beans, tomatoes, nasturtiums for edible leaves, flowers and seed pods, several types of peppers and aubergines, courgettes, onions plus leeks producing seed for autumn sowing.

Based on our now 12 years of experimenting with large tub growing along the lines of the concept of a ‘10-tub vegetable garden’ launched in our book ‘Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain’ there are many benefits as described below.

Proven benefits 1. Small space required you can build up a circle,

square, oblong or row in one bucket units of just a quarter of a square metre.

IF your cat was originally a stray, or previously an outdoor cat, and you plan to keep it inside from now on, then there are some things that may help you achieve this mammoth task.

Here are a few suggestions to help make the transition easier on both of you. After all, it is not easy for the animal to just switch to not going outside.

• Spay or neuter: spaying or neutering will rid your cat of those hormonal urges to go out and seek a mate. This will result in a calmer, friendlier cat.

• Playtime: schedule playtimes for when your cat would normally be outside. This will distract it from its normal routine and establish another, safer routine.

• Window seat: be sure your cat has a view of the outdoors and a sunny place to lie. Cats like to watch birds, so putting a bird feeder outside the window is likely to make it a favourite spot for your cat.

• Scavenger hunt: give your cat a game to play by hiding bits of dry food around the house. Hide the food in paper bags, boxes and behind open doors.

This will be good exercise and keep it busy so it doesn’t think of going outside. This is especially good to do right before the family leaves the house for the day.

• Attention: try to give your cat extra love and attention during this difficult transition period.

Taking a stray home to the UK STRAY cats are a common sight in Spain, and though holidaymakers may be moved by their plight, deciding to adopt one and take it back to the UK is not as straightforward as you might think.

The UK has strict laws regarding animals entering the country with a quarantine period that can last as long as four months and an import licence required for certain animals.

However, in order to bring your new found pet into the country without quarantine, there are other requirements that are essential. According to UK government rules, cats, dogs and ferrets all need to have a rabies

vaccination and have to wait a further 21 days after before they can enter.

In addition, your kitty will have to be micro-chipped and will also need a pet passport and travel with a company that is officially recognised as an

authorised carrier. A government list of approved carriers is listed under the Pet Travel Scheme of the UK Department of the Environment. Pets cannot travel in an airline cabin and should not be sedated and the IATA has a list of travel reg-

ulations which must be followed to make sure the animal’s welfare is properly taken care of during the flight.

The pet may also have to have a vet’s certificate stating it is fit to travel. Taking home a pet is not to be taken lightly.

Building projects begin again MORE houses are going to be built in Spain this year than in 2014, at least if approved projects are anything to go by, yet so far fewer are being finished.

The Public Works and Development Ministry has reported that between January and April this year, 18.3 per cent fewer homes were completed than in the same period in 2014.

Over the first four months of the year, construction was finished on 13,786 homes, whereas over the same period last year the total was 16,884.

Yet the number of finished homes is expected to increase in the immediate future as applications for building licences have increased.

The ministry reported that licences have been increasing for 10 months in a row, with the number applied for up until April being 29.9 per cent higher than a year before.

Tourism boost for property as rentals preferred choice WHILE hotels and guest houses are still the number one choice for tourists to stay in, the private rental market is getting ever more popular.

For people looking to buy a home and let it out to holidaymakers it is good news that 14 per cent of tourists visiting Spain last year (3.7 million) stayed in private houses and villas.

Those tourists spent more than â‚Ź2.68 billion with around â‚Ź900 million of that going on accommodation expenses. The rest went on spending money.

These figures have come from a study by Esade along with the Spanish Federation of Associations of Touristic Housing and Apartments (Fevitur) plus Salvetti & Llombart.

For the report a total of 775 tourists and 445 holiday homeowners were questioned around Spain. A third of the tourists said they would not consider a holiday in an area without available holiday homes as

However, in March 2015, Napoleon escaped from the island of Elba and within 100 days had marched on Paris to regain power. Great Britain, Russia, Prussia and Austria refused to accept his return and despite the certainty of another war with France, on June 8,

1815, Congress ratified the treaties.

Napoleon had already mobilised his army and knew he would have to confront a far larger Anglo-allied force under the Duke of Wellington and the Prussians led

by Field Marshall Blucher, both of whose armies were camped near Brussels. Napoleon chose to strike first before the coalition forces were ready and on June 15 a minor skirmish near Charleroi resulted in the withdrawal of a Prussian force.

That evening, Wellington and many of his leading officers were dancing at the Duchess of Richmond’s ball in Brussels when they heard about Napoleon’s surprise attack. Wellington immediately ordered a return to the field. The next 48 hours were crucial as both sides took up their positions.

A strong force led by Marechal Ney forced Wellington to withdraw northwards from Les Quatre Bras on June 16, while on June 17, Blucher’s army was defeated by the French at the Battle of Lagny. He managed to withdraw during the night towards the north thus maintaining contact with Wellington who had regrouped the Anglo-Allied forces on a ridge about 1.6 kilometres south of the village of Waterloo, near Brussels. The stage was set and on the

It was the nearest run thing you ever saw in your life’ Wellington following day, Sunday June 18, one of the most decisive battles in European history took place, changing the destiny of the continent.

The French had mustered over 75,000 infantry, cavalry and artillery troops. The Anglo-allied forces from

Britain, the Netherlands, Brunswick and Hanover, numbered around 68,000 reinforced by Blucher’s 50,000 Prussians.

The French counted on their experienced mounted lancers to charge opponents and although Wellington also used cavalry, his plan was to group his infantry in tight defensive squares. Both armies used artillery which had become a formidable weapon to weaken defences or repel attacks.

While Wellington was positioned on the north ridge, Napoleon had chosen high ground to the south, allowing both leaders to overlook the mainly flat plain, which lay between their armies from where they could implement their strategy.

To the flanks were the farmhouses of Hougoumont and La Haye Sainte and a sunken road providing cover, coveted by both forces and the scene of violent combat during the day. Part of Wellington’s tactics was to use the reverse slope of the ridge to conceal his troop strength.

Nevertheless, by mid-afternoon the French had the upper hand having

gained control of the farmhouses and were pushing back Wellington’s army.

Wellington retaliated by sending in the heavy cavalry of the Scot’s Greys to charge the enemy.

Coming from behind the ridge they initially surprised the French but they gradually became dispersed and were forced to pull back losing several officers in the process.

Napoleon then chose to bring in his own lancers led by Ney, but despite repeated cavalry attacks against the four man deep squares they could not break the defensive wall and were repelled under heavy fire, resulting in substantial French casualties.

Unknown to Napoleon, Wellington had been in contact with Blucher for most of the day and as the French were feeling the strain of the long battle, the Prussian forces reached the battlefield and outflanked the French army, which in turn was forced to retreat in disarray.

The battle was over.

Wellington was reputed to have said. “It was the nearest run thing you ever saw in your life.” Casualties were appalling. French losses exceeded 40,000 while the coalition lost 25,000 men, either killed, wounded or captured.

Despite surrendering and being sent to the island of St Helena, where he remained a prisoner until his death in 1821, Napoleon is still revered and believed by many to have won the battle.

After half a lifetime of military action Wellington entered politics and ultimately became Prime Minister of England.

IT has been nine years since Spain’s driver penalty points system for traffic offences came in to force.

Unlike in the UK where points are added for committing offences, in Spain, drivers are allocated points with their licence which are taken away if found guilty of an offence.

According to data released by the DGT, 73 per cent of all Spanish drivers still have their full quota of points intact, but 7 million drivers have been penalised.

Since the launch of the system 35.5 million points have been removed and a total of 203,283 drivers lost their licence on account of losing all their points; 183,342 were men and 19,940 were women.

Speeding is the most likely cause for los-

ing points. Last year alone, there were 640,996 speed related infractions and its not the younger generation who are the worst offenders, with over half being aged between 35 and 54, compared to 20 per cent of the younger drivers.

Cases of driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs have risen in the last nine years from 94,027 infractions in the first year to 119,345 in 2014 with the highest peak recorded in 2011 with 141,170.

More than 400,000 points have been lost in the last year alone for drivers being distracted, for example, by using a mobile phone at the wheel. However, there has been a decline in the number of offences for not wearing a seatbelt or child restraint.

What is ‘street legal’ in Spain?

I have always understood that a ny fore ign plat ed car on t he road in Spain had to be ‘street legal’ in the country in which it is registered.

For example, a British car more than four years old must have valid road tax Yes, a UK-plated car needs all the above requirements that make it ‘street legal’ in the UK in order to operate legally on Spanish roads.

The same goes for any other foreign-registered vehicle.

CLASSIC car clubs are becoming more and more popular

By Wendy Ann Cowham WHETHER you are a car fanatic of not, there is one sight that turns heads everywhere: the presence of a perfectly polished and pampered classic car.

It’s a machine that the general public cannot resist to gaze upon in admiration and at the same time engage in lively discussion.

This is due to the classic car

lovers that many clubs now boast a healthy membership as it has become apparent over the years that there are so many like-minded people with a passion for their motors.

Not only do classic car clubs offer a gateway to discover some of the most spectacular places to see, many are considered assets to the community and the social gatherings encourage a wealth of ideas and

sharing of information.

Coast Classics is just one of the clubs founded by Andreas Ullstein and Anton Paramonova back in 2009, as their sole purpose was to promote the restoration and preservation of American Classic Cars.

Anyone can join no matter what model they own, but the car must have been built before 1982.

By Tony Myles AS you read this the first competitors in The Open will have teed off at St Andrews and already some hopes will be fading. It is a tough test and rightly so as it is the oldest competition in golf, having been initiated in 1860.

For many it is the pinnacle of their career and therefore the opportunity of playing is one that is fiercely contested.

Sad news therefore that the World’s number one golfer Rory

With two Majors already tucked away and a mastery of the game not seen since the early days of Tiger Woods it is hard to remember that he is still only 21. In the meantime Campbell is suggesting that Louis Oosthuizen is in excellent form and will gain a top five place.
