No takers for lighthouse hotels
Easy ride for Almeria MERELY 1.18 per cent of Almeria drivers are fined each year, a survey found recently. According the Fundacion Linea Directa, this places Almeria almost at the bottom - or top, depending on point of view - of the list of fines imposed in each province. Only Alava, where 0.26 per cent of drivers are fined or Zamora (1 per cent), give drivers an easier ride. Teruel is the worst province in which to be a driver, where 32.3 per cent pay out for fines each year.
Fire plan woes RED TAPE is threatening to hold up the region’s firefighting strategy for this summer. Plan Infoca is due to come into force on June 1 but it looks as though the helicopters which play a vital role in extinguishing forest fires might have to stay on the ground. The operators are having a long wait in obtaining authorisation from Central Government, said a spokesperson from the Junta’s Environment Department.

DNA poop plans Shooting perplexes Nijar and Sorbas ALLEGED killer gives himself up
By Linda Hall BOTH Nijar and Sorbas declared a day of official mourning for Manuel Tristan and Francisca Herrera. A minute’s silence was also held in their memory following a crime that no-one in either town can understand. Both were shot dead by Francisca’s 50-year-old husband, although initial investigations indicate that victims’ relationship was nothing more than a working one.
Francisca, aged 47, was employed by Manuel at a seedling nursery in Nijar and on the day of the shooting she had gone to see her mother in the Sorbas neighbourhood of Barranco de los Lobos. The killer allegedly fired at her twice with a shotgun and left for Nijar where he gunned down Manuel at the door to one of his greenhouses in the Bayo Lirola area. He then went to the Guardia Civil in Nijar to give himself up.
