Give a dog a home

By Gemma Quinn THE expatriate community is being called upon to help build kennels for a dogs’ home after the charity was evicted to make way for a golf course.

One of the longest running animal charities in the Vega Baja area, SAT Animal Rescue, is building a new facility in San Isidro.

SAT President Dave Moor is appealing to local residents, businesses and corporate investors to help fund the build, after a long and difficult struggle to get all the necessary licences in place.

A major fudraising drive is under way to secure the future of hundreds of dogs in the Vega Baja.

“We are wanting to have around €50,000 before we can start the

actual building of the kennels and have raised €11,000 so far,” he explained. To date the charity has re-homed more than 7,400 dogs and its general running costs are

around €16,000 a month.

Six arrested in drugs operation A DRUG operation conducted jointly by members of the Guardia Civil and Customs Enforcement National Police has resulted in six people being arrested in Alicante and Santa Pola.

The operation seized 1,400kg of hashish arriving at Santa Pola on a fishing trawler and were loaded into a van. The vehicle was

then stopped on the ring road of Alicante and the driver was arrested. Five others were also arrested.

The origin of the operation goes back to January of this year, when the existence of an organised crime group specialising in the introduction of hashish in Spain was detected.

Guardamar latest victim of the pine beetle THE plague of the Tomicus Destruens pine beetle continues to attack pine trees across the Vega Baja.

After devouring large forests in Orihuela and Redovan, it continues to cause

havoc in many other areas and the insect has now advanced to the coast and struck down 200 trees in Guardamar del Segura in an area of one of the largest pine forests of the Valencia Region.

Councillor for the Environment in Guardamar, Juan Ortiz, said 100 pines have already been cut down having been destroyed by the Tomicus and another 50 more remain infected. He said another

outbreak has been detected on the slopes of the castle.

The local government has invested â‚Ź130,000 to stop the plague and remove infested trees and plant new ones.

Alicante drivers losing points ALICANTE is the worst city for drivers to lose points on their licence.

A report by the European Automobile Associates (AEA) Association, a private company specialising in the defence of the interests of drivers, revealed that Alicante motorists are the most likely to lose points on their driving licence in Spain.

Specifically, Alicante is the city that receives an average of eight penalties per year per hundred drivers, the highest in the country with Leon second and San Sebastian the third highest.

The report analysed a drivers census of 2013 showing 180,982 drivers, with police issuing 14,872 resulting in 46,691

points lost. Drivers in Alicante City were five times more likely to lose a point than residents of Las Palmas in Gran Canaria, which has a similar population figure. Whilst establishing the figures and analysing the data, the AEA was unable to give any reason or explanation as to why Alicante drivers were more likely to lose licence points.

PASSION OF CHRIST: Believed to be the oldest religious play in Europe.

Getting passionate about Christ at Lent

PEOPLE in Cervera in Lleida, Cataluña, take to the stage once a year at Lent to put on what is believed to be the oldest religious play in Europe.

The play, a six-hour-long stunning representation of the Passion of Christ, is believed to have started in 1481 as notes found in the regional archives detail payment for building a stage for the play in that year.

At the end of the 15th century it was a custom for religious representations of the story of Christ to be put on inside Cervera’s Santa Maria church, and notes have also been found from rehearsals for the play in 1534 when almost all the parts were played by priests.

There is definitely spring in the air

C

OULD it be that the cold winter winds of the crisis are finally behind us? Dare we look ahead to a new and revitalised Spanish

lifestyle?

It may simply be that spring is knocking on the door, and the days are getting longer, which gives us at the EWN a skip in our steps and the warm reassuring feeling that 2015 is going to be the turning point.

We suspect it may also have something to do with the fact that the housing market is showing promising signs of growth for the first time in 10 years. Or maybe that the unemployment figures are at the lowest they have been for the last three.

But everywhere you turn there seems evidence that subconsciously people can feel the wind of change, although they may be nervous to admit it so as not to bring a curse on it.

The golf courses have been manicured. The tennis courts have been painted, and the beaches are clean.

The hotels have made the beds, and the town hall steps have been scrubbed. Semana Santa (Easter Week) is on the doorstep, and the tourist season nearly upon us.

Whatever the reason for this elated spirit, it’s time to spring-clean! Out with the old and in with the new.

Start that new business, build that extension, buy that new bikini, and look forward to a bright new Spain.

Schools owed for lunches A FIGURE of about €24 million is owed to schools in Alicante Province by the government for the cost of school meals and transportation.

It is reported that schools have not been paid for the last four months.

The PP Regional Government’s Education Spokeswoman, Maira Barrieras, said they were “working every day to improve the Valencian education with increasing scholarships and facilities.”

Schools say that state money has not yet been received, however, pupils receiving scholarships or discounts for their school meals, are still getting them despite the payment defaults by the government.

Demolition order expires A DEMOLITION order to remove an illegal roundabout in Torrevieja has expired.

The roundabout has been located in Avenida de las Cortes Valen-

cianas, close to the school, for nearly a decade, but in March last year an order was issued for its removal as it could not be legalised.

House fire injures 4 FIREFIGHTERS rescued four people from a house fire in Calle Princesa Mercedes, Alicante.

Two of those rescued were found unconscious and suffering from smoke inhalation. Firefighters had to resuscitate the 51 and 53-year-old couple before they were transferred to Alicante General Hospital.

Two younger occupants, 23 and 25, also

suffered smoke inhalation and burns, and were hospitalised.

Its location and small size were also being blamed for causing road accidents.

An appeal was issued against the demolition but it was never ad-

dressed by the planning department. Now, as a result, the demolition order date has expired and the town hall must reopen the file and start the paperwork again to

get the roundabout removed.

Concerns over the roundabout were first raised by the Green and PSOE political parties a few years ago.

Sniffer dogs do the school run AROUND five per cent of pupils are affected by taking drugs, that’s according to headteachers in Alicante City.

Collision with petrol pump A PETROL station in Alicante was cordoned off for four hours after a car crashed into one of the pumps.

Firefighters initiated the emergency protocol to prevent a possible fire or explosion at the Petronor station in Avenida de Orihuela.

Police are searching for the driver as the owner of the petrol station reported damage of around €80,000.

Drug dealing outside of the city’s secondary schools has fallen by 80 per cent since police officers and dogs from the canine unit began patrolling around the schools in 2012. A 19year-old was recently arrested for dealing in a park behind the Instituto Cabo de las Huertas.

But one teacher at a Muchamiel secondary

school said although the police crackdown had worked, drugs were still available to the more streetwise who consumed them over the weekend, and took until Tuesday to get over it.

When teachers first suspect drug-taking, they initially talk to the pupil and then the parents to try and solve the problem both at home and school.

Grenades deactivated TWO mortar grenades found in the Mar Menor were successfully deactivated by an explosives unit from the Navy.

The unexploded grenades were found by trainee Navy divers near Los Alcazares as they were taking part in an underwater search training exercise 250 metres from the coast.

The students immediately implemented the safety precautions and the area was sealed off by buoys as a diver unit deactivated the two 60mm shells before removing them from the water.

Keeping a safe driving distance

HOW much distance should be kept between the car in front? Drivers need to be prepared for the car in front of them to stop, slow down or perform any manoeuvre.

The condition of the road and the speed play a factor.

Under normal driving conditions, a common method is to use the three-second rule to determine an adequate following distance.

If the road is wet, icy, with bends or visibility is reduced, then the following distance needs to be increased allowing you and the car in front more room to stop.

At a speed of 30 mph a vehicle needs 25 metres to stop safely.

And at 68 mph, that distance increases to 103 metres or the equivalent of a football pitch.

Safe driving distance even in traffic Even in built up traffic it’s good driving to leave a space between you and the vehicle in front.

If the car in front breaks

down, you need enough space to mirror, signal and manoeuvre around it safely. If you get bumped from behind, leaving a gap may save your vehicle from colliding with the one in front.

Keeping right unless overtaking Vehicles should keep right on roads with two lanes or more, unless overtaking. In built up areas, with two or more lanes, drivers should take the lane which best serves their destination.

This lane should not be changed unless overtaking, stopping, unloading or turning off. In all instances, drivers should not block or hinder the normal flow of traffic from behind.

Overtaking Overtaking is a potentially hazardous manoeuvre and must never be done on a bend, in limited visibility, on pedestrian crossings, on approaches to crossroads or intersections, or in tunnels. When overtaking a cyclist, drivers must

leave a minimum gap of 1.5 metres between their vehicle and the cyclist, at all times. Overtaking on the right hand side is prohibited in Spain.

Negotiating roundabouts On approaching a roundabout, take notice of all the information available such as traffic signs, traffic lights and lane markings, which can direct you to the correct lane depending on your exit. As a general rule, it is usually safest to keep to the right lane until you need to exit the roundabout. Signal before the exit you intend to take and use your mirrors to ensure there is no one behind who will be inconvenienced by your turning off.

Quarry to get a life of leisure

FIVE THOUSAND pine trees are being given to the town of Cox by the government to be planted in the old quarry.

The pine planting is part of a regeneration project to turn the old quarry into a recreational area and one of the largest green spaces in the Vega Baja.

The first phase of the plan has begun with the construction of a perimeter wall

from 300 tonnes of stone. Thirty unemployed people will be given work on the project, recruited through three employment workshops and grants totalling €600,000.

Carob, fig and olive trees will also be planted to attract wildlife and help reduce the impact of possible pests such as the Tomicus pine beetle.

Speed fiend knocks Happy over police officer campers A POLICE OFFICER was knocked over in La Arboleja, Murcia, as a man attempted to evade police spot checks.

The random police checks in the town were set up as part of an initiative to prevent burglaries in the area but the driver tried to get away and sped off in his father’s vehicle, skidding and crashing into two vehicles, one being a police car. Other officers later caught up with him but he accelerated away again, knocking over one of them.

The man was later located and arrested.

CREVILLENT’S Marjal Camping and Resort has been named the best camp-site in Spain by German tourists.

It has been recognised by the prestigious Deutsche European Camping Club 2015. The award is considered one of the largest awards of its kind in Europe.

Santa Pola goes animal friendly SANTA POLA is supporting an initiative to help feed the colony of cats in the town.

The town hall has declared the town ‘animal friendly,’ as it works with experts from the Humane Association of Gran Alacant and Santa Pola to organise appropriate feeding of stray cats which live in settlements of the municipality.

The town hall is also working with local vets to enable the sterilisation of cats to prevent overpopulation and to improve the cats’ welfare and public health.

As part of their ‘animal friendly’ programme, Santa Pola is also intensifying the actions of the local police to pursue and report cases of animal abuse.

Murcia’s mayor to stand down MURCIA CITY’S mayor, Miguel Angel Camara, is not standing for re-election in May. After 20 years as mayor, he has confirmed he is standing down.

His decision comes as he is questioned in relation to the Umbra case involving alleged construction-related irregularities. The mayor has maintained his innocence.

The PP party said Jose Ballesta, a former regional minister for public works, will replace Camara as the PP candidate for mayor of Murcia.

Better safety CREVILLENT has taken measures to increase safety on the service road of the A-7 motorway.

Alicante Provincial Council has completed work to improve the service road accessing the CV-875, an accident black spot.

In order to carry out the improvements, the city had to acquire an adjacent plot of land of 575 square metres, costing more than €8,400.

Former student on red carpet A FORMER student at the IES Playa Flamenca School, Lucy Nicole Rogers, was selected to attend the BAFTAs in Covent Garden, London.

Lucy, who graduated from IES Playa Flamenca last year is now studying photography at Huntingdon College, Cambridgeshire, and as part of the course joined over 1,000 other photographers fighting for position on the red carpet to film the stars, giving her a taste of the media and life as a press photographer. Local newspapers in Huntingdon and Cambridge were contacted and ran articles of Lucy’s work at the BAFTAs, selecting several of her photos.

Lucy has been in Spanish education since the age of four and thanked her art teacher Consuelo and tutor Lola at the Playa Flamenca School for all their hard work.

Fiesta begins in Mazarron THE festival of San Jose is under way in Puerto de Mazarron until March 22.

It includes the Route Aperitif which sees 31 venues offering tapas and a drink for €2.

Return of the mayor ORIHUELA’S Mayor, Monserrate Guillen of the Los Verdes green party, has returned to his post following heart surgery.

He thanked acting mayor, Antonio Zaplana of the PSOE, and expressed his gratitude for the good wishes and expressions of affection he had received.

Guillen said he will use the next few months to address some of the problems that are still awaiting resolution such as the illegal waste dumps, including the one at La Murada.

Costa cobras host 1st rugby fun day THE Costa Cobras Rugby Football Club hosted their first fun day at Daya Vieja sports ground to introduce themselves to the local community and to invite new members to join the recently established club.

With stalls, bouncy castle, rugby demonstrations and games and a tombola and raffle to raise funds for the club,

founder and coach Garry Dutch thanked everyone who turned up in support and for everyone who helped with the event, particularly the army of mothers who work tirelessly behind the scenes.

Secretary and mother Andy Lee, said she was delighted her son had got involved in rugby again after spending a few years training with foot-

ball clubs: “It’s all about the game and family and is a social atmosphere and offers so many skills that can help with other sports as well.”

After taking some time out from the sport in 2014, the 27-year-old from Almoradi is now back ready to race the new season. After driving for other teams and in other vehicles Luke now has his own Renault Clio 197 which has

been completely overhauled and is race ready thanks to help of sponsors and he is now prepared to start the Time Attack season on Sunday in Calafat.

Time Attack is Spain’s leading national event for racing drivers, but it works on time qualifications rather than racing against other drivers. For Luke, to be back in the sport with a new car, a team of sponsors behind him and a local garage in Dolores with extensive experience in Renault sports cars, joining him at each race, shows how his level of commitment has been stepped up a gear this year and it has been a long time coming.

Having been into racing since a very young age,

Luke first took up go-karting and went to touring car meets across the UK, but it is racing and circuit car racing where his passion really lies: “I've been trying to get into it properly since I was around 17 or 18, but it is a big money hobby and you need to have big financial backers.

“It is really difficult to make a living out of it and especially here in Spain.

Alicante republicans on a historical tour AROUND 20 members of the Costa Blanca Branch of Labour International (LI) met with Rafael Garcia, Luis Pesquera and Pedro Olimarte of the ‘Comision Civica de Alicante para la Recuperacion de la Memoria Historica’ in Alicante.

The Civic Commission is reviving the memories of hundreds of Alicante’s Republican supporters who suffered under Franco’s fascist regime.

LI members were taken on a tour of Republican monuments erected by the Commission in and around Alicante starting in Alicante port at the monument to the British cargo ship Stanbrook which, under Captain Archibald Dickson, rescued just under 3,000 people from Franco’s advancing Italian and

Moroccan support troops at Alicante port in March 1939, and took them to Oran in Algeria.

Malcolm Hardy, Chair of LI Costa Blanca said: “This was a moving experience highlighting the dreadful consequences of fascist movements, now on the rise in Europe again. The Comisión Civica are to be congratulated for not allowing the

awful crimes committed during the period of the Civil War to be forgotten.”

The Comisión Civica has now approached Labour International to assist them in presenting a memorial to the City of Cardiff in respect of the heroism of Cardiff-born Captain Dickson and his crew on the Stanbrook to take place next month.

SPANGLES: Getting ready to compete in national competition.

Spangles ladies are going for the gold SPANGLES Ladies’ Harmony Chorus are in their final preparations for the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers (SABS) seventh annual convention.

Winners of the SABS chorus contests in 2011 and 2013, the chorus has to take a year out after each win, so 2015 is the year that they can ‘go for gold’ once again: “We’ve been working hard on our contest package of two songs, an up-tune and a ballad,” commented Musical Director, Gail Grainger: “Our chorus is facing stiff competition from other choruses in Spain and Portugal and we need to keep one step ahead.”

This will be the last competition with Gail at the helm, as she moves back to the UK in May. Gail joined in 2008 and has been instrumental in helping the chorus win two gold medals and to represent Spain on the British barbershop stage.

With 45 ladies travelling to the convention in Benalmadena, Malaga, the amateur chorus has been busy fundraising for a new stage costume. Part of that fundraising includes their dress rehearsal concert on April 8 at 7.30pm at the Salon de Plenos, Ayuntamiento de Los Alcazares.

Women of Spain demand equality THOUSANDS of people took to the streets across Spain on Sunday March 8, to call for equality between women and men to mark International Women’s Day. In Madrid, thousands joined a protest march called by more than 40 women’s groups which filled the streets of the heart of the capital city.

During the march, which travelled along Calle Alcala from the Plaza de Cibeles to the Puerta del Sol, women chanted feminist slogans and brandished posters

demanding equal rights and pay and protesting against violence.

Speeches given at the protest, which many Madrid politicians attended, blamed continued cases of gender violence on lack of budgeting to fight the problem and demanded free legal abortions for all.

The upcoming local, regional and general elections are an opportunity for women to take part and exercise their rights, feminist groups stated.

also marched for true equality between men and women. Equal pay for equal work and the right to abort were the main subjects at the march, organised by Coordinadora Feminista group.

Gabriela Moriana, spokeswoman for the group, said: “Women have come out today because where equality and gender violence are concerned we are going backwards. Not only have we failed to reach the point we should be at, we’re actually getting further from it.”

New Parkinson’s association AN association has been set up for those affected

by Parkinson’s disease in Mar Menor.

The project was pre-

sented in San Javier by the local Councillor for Education and Volunteering, Cati Perez, along with the president

of the association, Genoveva Ortiz, who herself suffers from Parkinson’s.

The association, with the help of a speech therapist, a physiotherapist and neuropsychologist, is now part of the Federation of People Affected by Parkinson’s in Murcia Region and will assist those in Mar Menor helping sufferers and their families.

It is already offering free services to 17 people, including gym

sessions and speech therapy.

In the Mar Menor area, including San Javier, San Pedro del Pinatar, Los Alcazares and Torre Pacheco, there are 390 people with the disease and around 4,700 affected by Parkinson’s in the Murcia Region.

The association is to be based within the Hotel Association of Municipal Volunteering Programme in San Javier for those wanting more information.

Junta funding ALMERIA town councils are set to receive €19,833,559 from the Junta de Andalucia to hire unemployed people in community projects. The amount was announced by Junta representative Adriana Valverde.

Almeria walking THE province has launched its hiking trails for 2015 with 65 routes and trails planned which are expected to see 5,000 participants. The season kicks off with Laroya. Registration is €5 or €15 depending on the route.

Chirivel improvements THE province of Almeria has announced improvements to the town of Chirivel.

Projects planned include a municipal warehouse and a multipurpose centre. €237,200 is the budget set for the work.

Oria video MINISTER of Justice, Emilio de Llera, has condemned the controversial video showing young men tied up at Oria’s youth centre. He described it as a montage from someone who had spurious motives.

Mojacar singer shines through MOJACAR fans watching The Voice on BBC1 were thrilled to see 26-year-old Sheena McHugh from Coalville in Leicestershire go through to the next round in the singing competition.

Euro Weekly News readers will remember that Sheena was chosen by Spectrum FM to sing their Mojacar song to promote the Costa Almeria.

Sheena was paired with Holly Barry for their stage battle, and Will.i.am chose Aretha Franklin’s Sisters are doin’ it for themselves for the two girls to sing.

Sheena was concerned about the song choice. Speaking to Will.i.am, Sheena’s mentor for the competition, ahead of the battle, she said: “It takes away the good parts of my voice.”

Will.i.am responded harshly: “Sink or swim. It’s a battle. You’re not supposed to be comfortable in a battle” But when the two girls took to the stage, Sheena forgot her misgivings and belted out the classic soul number with gusto and passion.

A BRITISH man wanted by UK authorities for burglary has been arrested in Fuengirola. The 28-year old fugitive is wanted for burglary and suspected of being involved in a number of break-ins in 2013-2014.

A MECHANIC was severely injured in Palma after the trailer he was working on fell on his thorax, causing a cardiac arrest. The 36-year-old man was taken to Son Espases hospital where he remains critical.

Prosecutor opposes DNA-testing king THE Public Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Spanish Supreme Court is against DNA tests being carried out on the former King of Spain.

The prosecutor’s office supported the appeal presented by former King Juan Carlos’s lawyers against the admission to court of a paternity suit

The office insists that the case should not be taken any further than a suit based on court hearing laws, stating: “Under no circumstances should the suit be accepted if no proof is provided.”

The fact that a different version to that presented at the courts was given in a television programme by the woman,

who claims to be King Juan Carlos’s illegitimate daughter, was also mentioned in the statement.

The Supreme Court agreed in January to hear the case, ignoring the Public Prosecutor’s arguments that the proof provided and the existence of a relationship between the former head of state and the woman’s mother were not credible.

Gas bottle users set to save THE price of a ‘bombona’, the traditional orange butane gas bottle used in many Spanish homes, has fallen by 9.7 per cent.

The government announced that the price of 12.5 kilo bottles, a typical sight for anyone living or visiting Spain, will be €15.80 for March and

April, and could see further reductions in May and June, due to a new formula used to calculate prices for liquid gases derived from petroleum.

It should be noted, however, that although this is the official price, there may be variations as commission is paid to delivery men.

For the second year running Microsoft’s Bill Gates, estimated to be worth $79.2 billion (€71.64 billion), headed the list.

Mexican magnate Carlos Slim with $77.1 billion (€69.74 billion) came next, followed by US

investor Warren Buffett’s fortune of $72.7 billion (€65.76 billion) The Inditex chief’s $64.5 billion (€58.34 billion) wealth grew last year by ‘only’ $500 million although Forbes pointed out that this was largely caused by depreciation of the euro.

Department store has to tell THE taxman is on the tail of big spenders at El Corte Ingles.

In 2008 the National Office of Fraud Investigation (Onif) attached to the tax authority, Hacienda, requested details of clients who racked up €30,000 a year or more on El Corte Ingles cards.

The department store was given a month to supply the names and addresses of these customers as well as their card numbers and bank details. Failing to comply would be considered an offence, Onif warned.

The department store objected and appealed to the High Court, which in 2012 sided with Hacienda.

El Corte Ingles again appealed, this time to the Supreme Court which has once more taken the tax authority’s part.

The Supreme Court took the same line that it applied to 4B credit cards by ruling that a duty exists to provide information and collaboration whenever required by Hacienda.

There have been at least 10 similar rulings in recent years, obliging banks and credit card companies to supply information even when users are not under investigation. This has included itemised records of users’ spending and not merely a final balance figure.

Forbes lists 21 Spaniards who boast a combined wealth of $116.3 billion (€105.20 billion). Five others - Francisco Jose Riberas Mera, Juan Maria Riberas Mera, Leopoldo del Pino, Isidoro Alvarez, Jose Maria Aristain and Enrique Bañuelos - lost their places this year.

Copy writing and translations PROFESSIONAL writing services are not something many make use of despite their importance to business.

Proven, a single spelling mistake on a website’s home page will reduce sales by 50 per cent. It suggests professional sloppiness and possible fraud.

Although there is a pressing need for both translators and copywriters in Mediterranean Spain, there is little demand for either of these services. I may be wrong but I put this down to businesses here being more laid back than their northern European counterparts. There is perhaps a shortage of hard-nosed business professionals.

Fees charged for either services can be modest or challenging. Like much else in life you get what you pay for.

Many translators are doing it ‘on the side.’ They have only their time to consider. These translators are inappropriate for such as legal and official docu-

ments that require a notary’s stamp.

The copywriter is rarely paid his true worth. He or she takes your product on its blank sheet of paper and creatively spins a web of enticement to attract interest and buyers. Their fees are often high.

So they should be. You see an advert; he sees many hours of inspired concentration. Their job is to create masterpieces out of a basic sales pitch.

The true business professional does not count the cost of the investment as he expects returns to be far higher.

A good copywriter can quadruple sales.

You cannot put a price on that.

OUR jobs may fall under the word ‘work,’ but that doesn’t mean that we have to be miserable while doing them! Just today at the Health Centre I noticed that the receptionists that take the appointments always have long sour faces on them. Granted, their jobs are detailed and somewhat tedious at times, but being gloomy while working isn’t helping matters! I am not asking that they jump around and sing like they are in a Broadway musical, but cracking a smile now and then wouldn’t hurt.

NCE again I was interested to see the new series of politician ‘rappers’ put out by Sky news this week.

These heavily manipulated adverts, somewhat irreverently, portray our esteemed leaders as twitching entertainers informing us they are bringing down the deficit and so on.

To my mind, by presenting these highly technical images, the media moguls have actually shown us all just how much they can in fact meddle with any of the information they gather before delivering it to its unsuspecting viewers. It’s all very well to make their technically tweaked twitchers appear humorous

At least the latter gathered enough votes to gain seats. I doubt President Putin, with a popularity rating of 86 per cent, lost much sleep over such a ‘threat.’

Half a Prime Minister David Cameron has the gall to demand Russia hold a transparent investigation into the murder.

A weekly look - and not entirely impartial reaction to the Spanish political scene

IN order to crawl out of recession Spain and Portugal introduced unloved austerity measures imposed by Brussels that hurt the most vulnerable of all.

So did Greece, whose new president Alexis Tsipras was elected on the strength of promises to reverse austerity.

The EU predictably called him to heel and Tsipras has now accused Spain and Portugal’s conservative governments of conspiring against him, fearful of the rising Left.

Of course they fear the Left but their lack of support stems from believing that if they did it by the book and at great cost, then Greece can too.

Neither Spain nor Portugal lied to join the single currency, neither frittered away the shoals of shimmering euros that flowed

subjects. Not necessarily. Picture a syllabus devised by mildewy clerics and imparted by earnest proselytisers with pat answers.

Now picture theories posed by cool Stephen Hawking with his wheelchair and synthesised voice. Conflict? No contest!

Educashun is just wot we need

T

HE nerdy, would-be world statesman Ed Miliband announced to great acclaim last week, that when the Labour Party forms the next government, it will reduce university tuition fees from nine to six thousand pounds.

Now that’s what I call radical thinking; I almost fainted with uncontrolled admiration.

But before Labour supporters start to reach for their telephones, let me say this is not a diatribe directed at Labour politicians - I am equally repelled by the lot of them, of whatever political persuasion.

No, it’s this mind-set that our politicians seem to have and their ridiculous dream and target of sending every school leaver in the land to university that I don’t get.

University was once the mark of excellence. A place where those above average abilities could hone their natural talent and academic abilities to the

highest level. Because the truth is, we are not all equal.

That’s not to say that the less academic amongst us are inferior. Quite the opposite. Many of my ex-school pals trained under the apprenticeship scheme and went on to become skilled mechanics or technicians. Others had careers as diverse as nursing, sales and construction occupations that were suited to their own particular fields of interest and aptitude, and did not require the university experience to achieve.

One pupil from my secondary modern school, who plodded through the lowest academic stream for four years, used his talent of gardening to good effect and now owns two large garden centres in Hampshire.

The point is we all have a niche

required in order to become an equally rounded individual.

I recently watched a repeat of a TV quiz first aired in 2013. One

of the contestants was a university student who was asked to name the explorer who mapped New Zealand. His answer, Robinson Crusoe. And it got worse when asked by Julia Bradbury the show’s host, to name the book by H.G.Wells about a man who could travel to the future.

Answer, Great Expectations.

They weren’t even intelligent guesses.

Anything less than a university education we are led to believe, will condemn your kid to a life sitting outside a tube station with a lurcher and holding out an empty cocoa tin for loose change.

If you believe that Robinson Crusoe mapped New Zealand, then yes, this is a possibility.

But what does it tell us about those who study economics or political science at university and then without proper jobs or real experience of the world, go directly into the business of politics?

I rest my case.

Gender wage gap widens in Spain The gender pay gap in Spain is widening with women earning an average of 19.3 per cent less than men, compared to a 16.1 per cent difference in 2008. What is your opinion on the matter?

OWNER of The Pub in Formentera del Segura, Sheralee Selves, is not surprised to hear that female workers receive less pay than their male counterparts. “I’ve never experienced it here personally as I’ve always worked for myself in Spain but I definitely experienced it in the UK so can well believe it happens in Spain where I think women are still seen by some in a bit of a derogatory way,” she said, and added: “As an employer we always try and look after our staff and pay them more than the average and I would never think to pay a woman less than a man; if they can do the job they get paid.

It’s so wrong to pay depending upon gender.”

Florence Navarro, owner of Agua Flo, a spas, pools and accessories company in Los Montesinos, was shocked to find such a wage gap between men and women. “Women should absolutely be paid the same as men for the same job. I would never consider paying a

Witness for the defence I KNOW that Leapy Lee can defend himself perfectly well; after all, he has his column to do so.

However, I think Bill Campbell has missed the point. Mr Campbell, please let me ask you this one question: “Did you ever, if only once, hear a Muslim singing “Allah save our gracious Queen” with their eyes closed and their hands on their hearts?

I suspect not. Until that day comes, Mr Campbell, I am with Leapy 100 per cent and I think you should be too.

Newspeak peril BILL CAMPBELL’S attack on Leapy Lee contained the usual one-liners used by the liberal left to shut down any discussion with people of opposing views.

I am referring to “the world has changed” or “you’re stereotyping.” Add “you’re a dinosaur” or “this is the 21st century” (as if you were 100 years out of date) and one has the full set.

These phrases are a common trick used by pseudo-intellectuals who feel their use is an argument in itself to denounce any opposition. They despise anyone with (non-political) conservative attitudes, as they are so absolutely certain of their standpoint.

Campbell says that the restrictions in Saudi “embarrass most Muslims.” Really!

I presume he speaks for those in Syria, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Somalia, Yemen and Libya where I believe the nightlife is a riot!

Similarly he believes only a tiny minority of Muslims are involved in recent atrocities.

Who says so? The BBC or the Guardian? A recent poll showed almost 30 per cent had sympathy with events in Paris and who knows what is said in private?

Mike would do better to support NATO and the EU’s moves to beef up its military presence and hit Russia economically. The countries which Mike says are

suffering because of the sanctions have made it clear that they would rather suffer that than be left at Putin’s mercy.

4th March I SIGNED off my last blog feeling more than a little under the weather. I have likened my chemotherapy to an assault course in the past and until recently I had been metaphorically jumping over walls and racing along at a great pace.

Last week I seemed to get a little stuck in the cargo netting! Not to worry as nothing lasts forever.

Finally my body seemed to kick into action and my defence system rallied and my fever dissipated.

My dear friend Pepi called me to see if I was up to having a visitor. It was just what I needed so she came over. It was a beautiful sunny day and just sitting having tea and chatting with Pepi made me feel so happy.

The small things take on greater importance when life changing events happen so now I appreciate every little happy moment.

Small things take on greater importance It was Andalucía Day so we went up to the football club. My son was playing in

a ‘friendly’ match. Wonderful Spanish music accompanied by a healthy portion of paella was just what the doctor ordered.

We spent the afternoon there and then a quick icecream on the way home.

I was starting to feel tired so went to bed and fell asleep.

Sunday dawned and I really felt so much better. I decided as it was another lovely sunny day that I would flash up the BBQ. Jorge was coming over and wasn’t expecting a BBQ so that would be a nice surprise.

He had just finished training in the gym and sent me a message to say he was on his way, extremely happy at the prospect of chorizo, chicken wings, burgers, pinchitos and the like!

He wasn’t the only one… we all love a BBQ! I always like to mention

the special people in my life.

I have to thank Jorge so much for all his support and love.

He really does understand what I am going through because he is also a cancer survivor. I draw great

I strongly believe in remembering the good times strength from having him by my side.

I am now in the last week in the run up to chemo session number six.

I do feel like there is light at the end of the tunnel, but still have a further two treatments to go and

probably the toughest yet.

I busy my head with thoughts of better days and of all the things I plan to do. For me the outlook is good despite everything that has happened to me and to us as a family.

I strongly believe in remembering the good times, enjoying the here and now and looking forward to the future.

Any other philosophy just wouldn’t be helpful. Lamenting your ill fortune or asking why me is frankly a waste of time and energy.

It sounds so simple, but honestly thinking positive thoughts really does bear fruit.

My plan for this week is to hug my children lots! And to tick off a few things on my ‘list to do’! I will above all rest, eat well and keep my fingers crossed that I will be in shape for my next treatment.

Eating too much salt could be good for skin protection WE all know that eating too much salt may be bad for your heart, but did you know it could be good for your skin?

Scientists say that a high-salt diet causes sodium levels to build up in the skin, and may boost the immune system and help fight off

germs that cause bacterial skin infections. In an experiment, German researchers discovered mice fed on a high-salt diet healed infections in their feet quicker.

Professor Jonathan Jantsch, of the University of Regensburg, said: “Up to now, salt has been

regarded as a detrimental dietary factor; it is known to be detrimental for cardiovascular diseases, and recent studies have implicated a role in worsening autoimmune diseases. Our study challenges this one-sided view and suggests that increasing salt

accumulation at the site of infections might be an ancient strategy to ward off infections.”

Future studies will examine how salt accumulates in the skin and triggers immune responses, and why salt accumulates in the skin of aging adults.

It is hoped by getting a better understanding of how salt accumulates it might help to design new drugs.

It is not suggested people increase their salt intake due to the known negative effects of high salt consumption.

IN terms of genetics, most people are more like their fathers.

Although we inherit equal amounts of genetic

mutations from our parents, new research has revealed we actually ‘use’ more of the DNA that we inherit from our fathers.

Finding out whether we inherit variants of these genes from one parent or another is crucial for the development of diseases and treatments to diseases, like cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

The study’s lead author, a Professor from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, (USA)

said the research was the first to show that mammals are more genetically similar to their fathers than mothers.

For the study, researchers selected three different species of mice with different genes, bred them and quantified how much genetic information was inherited from the mother and the father for every single gene in the mouse’s DNA.

Whatever you use, you only have a split second to give it on completion of an exercise. I like to use my voice and a quick touch under the chin as my rewards.

Think about the dolphin which performs in a show.

He is being taught to jump out of the water. If he jumps about two metres, he gets a small whistle to call him back, and when he returns to the edge of the pool, he gets a small fish.

As his training increases, and he jumps about six metres or more out of the pool, he gets a huge instant whistle while he’s at the top of the jump, which brings him back to the pool edge where he gets a bucket of fish as his reward. Timing is important.

(If your timing is out, you may be rewarding for the wrong action.) The reward is always there for him immediately and he will give his best every time.

Buster prefers to stay home

By Lamia Walker of HouseSitMatch JIM and Buster have been together for 12 years, as long as Jim’s lived in the Costas. It’s not a bad age for a Cocker Spaniel, though now his back legs are a little weak and he doesn’t wander far from the back patio when he goes out. In his earlier years he used to tear around the garden like a thing possessed when Jim shouted ‘Wanna go out?’

So these days when Jim plans a trip home, or to visit friends in Europe, he no longer takes Buster with him. Instead he organises a house sitter to come and

stay with him to minimise disruption to his routine.

Up until last year Buster would still eagerly jump into the car when he saw suitcases by the door ready for a trip. Now it was hard for him to jump anywhere, arthritis has taken hold.

Philosophical as ever, Jim has decided whatever time they have left together they will enjoy, but without pushing each other too far into discomfort. So Jim meets house sitters online through the HouseSitMatch network and ensures they come to stay a day or two early to keep Buster company while he gets ready and eventually goes on his

holiday. His trips are a little shorter now, because he is keen to get home to make sure all is well. And so far, so good. Long live Buster!

Affordable luxury property prices attract super-rich to Spain MADRID and Barcelona may not be Monaco, but they’re attracting an increasing amount of super-rich property owners.

A study by multinational consultancy firm Knight Frank has found that between them the two Spanish cities boast 982 great fortunes, 14 more than last year.

The Wealth Report stated that the number of ultra-high net worth individuals increased by 3 per cent in 2014 across the world, and by 2 per cent in Spain.

Last year, 3,538 super-rich registered Spain as their place of residence. Of these, 554 were registered in Madrid and 438 in Barcelona with the rest

This placed Madrid as number 18 on the list of favourite places for these people to set up home and was the first time the Spanish capital city reached the top 20 for cities that attract the world’s richest people in the nine years the study has been carried out.

Madrid is now the ninth favourite city in Europe for the super-rich, ahead of cities including Amsterdam and Dublin.

Luxury property prices increased by 5 per cent in the city in 2014, yet prices are still considered ‘affordable.’ In Madrid, €1 million would buy you 133 square metres whereas the same amount would only be enough for 23 square metres in London or 17 in Monaco.

Study reveals great differences in rent RENTAL prices in Spain can vary up to €5,600 depending on the area, a new study has revealed.

The Maximums and Minimums 2014 report by real estate valuer Tecnitasa placed the priciest rental property in Spain on the Calle Serrano in Madrid, with a price of €5,760 per month, while the cheapest was found in the Estadio area of Castellon at a price of just €119 per month.

The study revealed that the most expensive rentals per square metre were found in Madrid, Barcelona, Palmplona, Santander, Marbella and Cadiz, with prices of more than €17 per metre per month.

Meanwhile the cheapest were Castellon, Elche, Huelva, Almeria, Granada and Torrent in Valencia, where the rent per metre per month was found to be less than €2.

Tecnitasa director Fernando Garcia Marcos said that a tendency for prices to stabilise has been observed and added that although price-drops continued to dominate they were less severe than

Madrid is currently the place in Spain with the biggest differences in real estate prices, variations of €5,500 per month between property in Calle Serrano and San Cristobal de los Angeles.

On the other hand the city with the smallest different was found to be Soria, where the difference

between the cheapest and priciest rental properties was just €165 per month.

Markets a key factor THE international financial markets are expected to be a key driver in the Spanish prime residential property market during 2015.

During the first few months of 2015, an increase in demand from UK, US and Swiss buyers thanks to the rise of the dollar, pound and Swiss franc against the Euro has been seen according to Lucas Fox property consultants.

On the other hand the number of Russian investors is expected to tail off as the rouble goes into free fall.

“With unemployment falling, the economy growing faster than predicted and property reaching the bottom, 2015 is set to be a pivotal year for Spain’s property market,” said Lucas Fox co-founder Alexander Vaughan.

“Prices are on average 40 per cent below what they were since the start of the crisis in 2007 and we predict a slow and steady recovery.”

Hay fever season and driving SUFFERING from allergies and being a driver are a combination of factors that poses a potential risk on the roads.

In a new campaign by the DGT, it is revealed how a sneezing fit of just five seconds, means that a car travelling at 90 kilometres per hour covers a distance of 125 metres, the distance greater than a football field, when the driver’s attention is distracted as a result. The sneezing fit can often last longer than five seconds though, perhaps eight, 10 or more, with the vehicle continuing to travel without the driver’s full attention.

On a normal, dry road, the overall stopping distance for a car travelling at 90 kilometres per hour is calculated at 65.7 metres, just half of the distance covered during our five second sneezing fit.

During the reaction time alone, the vehicle would have travelled 25 metres.

SNEEZING: Can be dangerous while driving.

In other words, in the event of an incident ahead, there would not be enough time to react and stop.

Sneezing is only one symptom of an allergic reaction, most commonly Hay Fever at this time of year, severe itching of the eyes, irritation, congestion or a runny nose, light sensitivity and many more combinations of symptoms, all make driving particularly problematic for sufferers.

Drugs to combat the

physical symptoms can help ease the dreaded onset of Hay Fever, but some of these drugs also cause problems with driving, sometimes causing drowsiness, or other problems, and can interact with prescribed medication.

Sufferers of Hay Fever might have already realised that the pollen season has started early once again in Spain, but it can vary depending on the geographical location.

Within the car, keeping

the vehicle clean, inside and out, can remove much of the residual pollen, as can the installation of filters in the air distribution system. Keeping windows closed, wearing sunglasses and avoiding key problematic times such as dawn and dusk can all ease the symptoms.

All antihistamines sold in Spain should carry a pictogram on their packaging, depicting a car within a danger warning signal, which is designed to alert drivers of the possible effects on the ability to drive safely. However, it may not be present on imported medication. But, if you see this sign you need to be aware that your driving ability is likely to be affected. If you are taking any medication, make sure you read the instruction leaflet, or check with your doctor or pharmacist.
