Tourism brings jobs boost THE tourism sector in the Valencia Region created a total of 22,971 new jobs last year, with 70 per cent of them on the Costa Blanca. According to industry data published by EPA Turespaña, workers have gone from 214,219 at the end of 2013 to 237,190 at the end of last year. “Some results are the consequence of the good performance of the sector, with growth in passenger numbers and tourist spending confirming 2014 as a record year,” said Regional Minister for Tourism and Commerce Maximo Buch. He added: “This figure represents a 10.7 per cent increase over the occupied sector in 2013, the second largest increase among the autonomous communities, which confirms the strength of our tourism industry as a source of employment.”

Floating compromise to save the Loreto fireworks’ display JAVEA celebrated its Loreto fiestas last summer as always but something was missing. The fireworks that traditionally end the celebrations at the harbour were banned after the Generalitat regional government rejected the town hall’s application to stage them. Although the display has taken place for 45 years without incident, the port fell foul of new fire-

prevention regulations prompted by last year’s drought. All fireworks’ displays should be at least 500 metres from woodland, the regional government stipulated, and Javea Port is 470 metres distant from trees on Cabo de Antonio. Without fireworks, the Duanes de la Mar district’s fiestas in honour of Our Lady of Loreto were not the same, admitted Javea’s mayor Jose

Chulvi. Moving them from the port and forgoing the spectacle of their reflection in the sea was not an option, he said. Now a compromise has been sought and the town hall has asked the coastal authority’s permission to launch the fireworks from floating platforms. The Loreto display is a tourist attraction, Chulvi said, bringing trade to bars and restaurants.
