READERS AND ADVERTISERS A HAPPY NEW YEAR
Balthasar, Melchior and Gaspar en route
THERE won’t be a city, town or village in Spain without a Three Kings procession on January 5. The actual feast day might fall on January 6 but presents usually arrive the night before and children attending the processions might be lucky enough to receive their presents from the hands of Balthasar, Melchior and Gaspar themselves. Those who can’t make it to the procession won’t be disappointed, though, as the Kings can be relied upon to leave their gifts on the balcony or windowsill, in keeping with Spanish tradition.
Expat seeks help for abandoned dogs DON’T dump dogs this festive period! That’s the New Year message from one animal lover who is struggling to finance the dozens of dogs abandoned on her property near San Miguel de Salinas. “On our four acres of land we have 140 animals.
It is all funded by ourselves and when it was 30 or 40, it was manageable, but now it is so hard,” said Janette Lopez. Horses, pigs, birds, even ferrets and a tortoise have been left as well as the dogs. She clearly loves animals
but the situation cannot go on. “We need €3,000 each month just to cover food and for general care of them and after using our own personal savings we have begged and borrowed,” she explained. Janette went through all the necessary legal channels to form a charity,
Finca La Castellana. Now with charity status they can have their work recognised and officially raise money. If you can spare a few hours or are able to adopt a dog, contact Janette on 610 451 133 or search Finca La Castellana on Facebook.
