Infanta to face trial THE Infanta Cristina is to stand trial for her alleged participation in the Noos corruption case. Judge Jose Castro announced on Monday (December 22) that the Duchess of Palma and younger sister of King Felipe VI will have to stand trial for her alleged co-operation in two tax offences committed by her husband Iñaki Urdangarin. According to the judge, the role played by the Infanta (pictured) enabled her husband Iñaki Urdangarin to defraud Spain’s tax authorities of €337,138 through Aizoon, a company they both own.

ISSUE NO. 1538
Judge Castro decided not to apply the Botin Doctrine in the Duchess’s case, according to which the
investigating judge may decide to close the case if neither the public prosecutor nor the affected parties wish the suspect to be prosecuted, and ruled that the private prosecution against the Infanta – represented by trades union Manos Limpias – is enough to take the king’s sister to trial. Neither the Anti-Corruption Public Prosecutor’s Office nor the Spanish tax authorities – the affected party – think there is proof that the Infanta committed a crime which would make her criminally liable in connection with the Nóos case.
