Nativity breaks records SIX THOUSAND visitors turned up last Sunday (December 21) to take a look at the real-life nativity scene at Los Tablones in Motril. The fifth edition of the event this year included new spaces to display traditional professions including the wheat windmill and the pottery workshop. Mayor of the town, Luisa Garcia Chamorro, said that Christmas had officially started with this event, which continues to attract
higher visitor numbers each year. “This event has become one of the tourism
highlights of the year, due to the realistic nature of the scenes and the introduction of new

The fruity smell of success THE Costa Tropical produces more than 80 million kilos of tropical fruits a year, and the figure could be higher if water was more readily available. The perfect weather conditions along the coasts of Granada and Malaga make the area ideal for growing fruits like avocados, custard apples and mangoes.
The area has also become one of the most important exporters of these products, nationally and internationally. More than 50 million kilos of custard apples are grown on the Costa Tropical, which translates into a staggering 99 per cent of European production. Around 10,000 people on Granada’s coast make
a living out of the tropical crops, with more than 4,000 direct jobs. Production of tropical
fruits has been stable during the economic crisis, registering fewer losses than other sectors.
Tablones, Jose Manuel Maldonado, congratulated the 100 residents who had made the event possible, and emphasised the improvement that it experiences every year. Garcia also thanked the participants for using the Cueva Hornedo and its surroundings as the setting for the play, and said the event could not have been possible without the support of the different council departments and the help of Local Police and Civil Protection.
