Brand new MACS shop opens in Huercal Overa MONDAY December 15 saw a new offering in Huercal Overa with the opening of the brand new MACS shop. Mojacar Area Cancer Support (MACS) already had two stores in Mojacar and Albox, but there has been a need in the Huercal Overa area for some time. MACS was established in 2007, the dream of Elaine Brown who had seen the need for a support group for cancer sufferers, their families and their care givers. Back in 2007, what began as a coffee morning, rapidly grew into a thriving group that has helped many people through the amazing work from its volunteers. MACS is an informal group who meet regularly to provide support and services free of charge to its users: such things as wigs, prosthetics, transport, walking frames, massages and emotional
support, all things that can make a real difference to the life of a cancer patient. Opening a new shop takes a huge amount of work, and many people and businesses rallied around to ensure things ran smoothly.
Some businesses waived their fees to help. Even the council of Huercal Overa stepped in, becoming the first municipality to waive the opening licence fee and administration for a MACS store. Many people attended
the grand opening to show their support for the news store. In addition to the mayor of Huercal Overa, there was also Monica Navarro, councillor for Commerce in Huercal Overa and Alejandro Guerrero Salvador, the Honorary British Consul of Almeria, who cut the ceremonial ribbon. Additional support was provided by FACE Arboleas, Mojacar Freemasons, Voss Estates, Dames in Turre and architect Juan Antonio Garcia. Lorraine Cundy and Sue Pearce from FACE (Fundraising in Arboleas Caring for
Everyone) were at the opening to present MACS with a cheque for €500. Although only officially open for 90 minutes, the store still raised €347.73. The new store is open from 10am until 2pm Monday to Friday and is located at 151A Carretera Estacion, Huercal Overa. Those interested in volunteering should call 634 358 334. If you need cancer support please call 634 656 555.
